Quiet Excellence Scholar, musician, athlete, leader — this year’s Headmaster’s Award recipient, Luke Bravo (below), filled a wide range of roles at ESA, and did so with integrity, determination, humility, wisdom and compassion. Luke served as Honor Council President and as a Senior Peer Leader, was a National Merit Commended Scholar and a member of the National Honor Society, and played varsity baseball. An extremely gifted musician, Luke successfully undertook an independent study in music production as a sophomore. Says Dr. Baker, “Luke is a young man of outstanding character and tremendous depth whose future and potential seem infinite.” Luke will continue to explore that potential in Tulane University’s Honors program this fall.

The jurors were unable to select just one student to receive Senior Day with teammates top honors in the exhibit. They chose Carter Broussard Bouchner (whose photographs are on Matthew the cover and on pageand 5) and Landon Lingle Tana Gauthier, who works in both 2D and in large-scale ceramics (above). Of Carter and Tana, the judges wrote: What really stood out with these two is their individual vision and their ability to recognize ‘mistakes’ and turn them into great successes. What also appealed to us was the sophisticated manner in which they addressed their work and the concepts underlying it, and the professional manner in which they made choices and articulated them as they presented their work.” Read more about ESA’s artists at ESAcadiana.com/VisualArts.

An Artist’s Tribute In her first attempt at portraiture, Brittany Chen, ’16, (larger portrait at left), captured the spirit of her classmates in a stunning collection. At the Senior Art Show, a 15-foot long wall held the 38 portraits, which made up a single piece Brittany titled “38, or Games I Play with my Victims.” In honoring Brittany with the Senior Art Exhibition Award, artist Kelli Kaufman wrote “Brittany is more than just a technically skilled artist. She is able to translate the human essence of her subjects in a way that shows emotion, vulnerability and truth. She has incorporated emotion and passion into her work, the purest form of self-expression and the mark of a true artist.” She will attend the University of California, San Diego, where we’re sure she’ll continue to develop her talents. Congratulations, Brittany! Below: For the first time, the Senior Trip took students to Normandy, where they participated in a ceremony at the cemetery, left a bouquet of flowers from ESA in honor of the soldiers, and walked Omaha Beach. After crossing the English Channel by ferry overnight, the seniors and chaperones landed at Portsmouth and visited Stonehenge before moving on to London. A fantastic detour!

In May, we celebrated the ESA careers of Lower School Head Anne Johnson, Assistant Admissions Director and Assistant Lower School Head Ann Tobola and Assistant to the Lower School Head Diane Delahoussaye. All three are moving on to new adventures. Anne Johnson (near left) took on the role of Lower School Head when the Lower School opened in 2004, and shaped it into the top early childhood and elementary program in Acadiana and beyond. “Anne is one of the most talented and thoughtful people that I have ever had the opportunity to work with,” says Dr. Baker, “and what she’s done here is nothing short of spectacular.”
A Very Fond Farewell
Ann Tobola (far left) began her ESA Lower School career as a PreK4 teacher, moving over from the Development Office, where she managed public relations and alumni relations. Both Anne and Ann brought many years of teaching expertise to ESA. Ms. Diane (far left below, with the founding faculty and staff of the Lower School) was the face and voice of ESA Lower School for twelve years, and steered parents and students through the ins-and-outs of school days, from carpool line to missing lunches. We’re grateful for everything they’ve done to build the Lower School, and we wish them all the best!
And a Welcome Back To Ms. O! Kathleen O’Shaughnessy returned to ESA in July as our new Lower School Head. Many past parents and alumni will remember Kathleen, who spent eleven years as an ESA faculty member and administrator in Cade. She served on the vision committee that looked into the feasibility of beginning a lower school at ESA fifteen years ago and studied the Schoolwide Enrichment Model (SEM), selected as the framework for the Lower School, so that she would have an even greater understanding of the learning environment that our middle school students had experienced. Kathleen has served as ESA English Department Chair, MS Curriculum Coordinator, 6th grade Dean and Dean of the MS Faculty, as well as Head of School at Epiphany Day School. For the last year, she has been the Professional Development Manager at Louisiana A+ Schools, working on arts integration with teachers and schools around the state of Louisiana. She comes to us with a B.A. and an M.Ed. in Elementary Education, as well as a B.S. in Psychology.
Beyond her comprehensive experience, Kathleen has a love of ESA and a love of teaching that will help ESA build on the work that has been done to take us to even greater places. Dr. Paul Baker
Called to Lead Each August, ESA welcomes new members to our Board of Trustees, the school’s governing body. The Board of Trustees is made up of twenty members, including alumni, parents, past parents and members of the Acadiana community. Each Trustee serves a three-year term, with the option to continue for a second term. The Trustees guard the school’s mission and values while charting a path for our future. This year, outgoing Board Chair Patrick Stokes, who has served since 2010, will hand leadership to Jerome Moroux, ’97. In addition to being an ESA alumnus, Jerome taught English in Cade for several years before attending law school. He and his wife Ashley have three children at ESA, Roman, ’24, Silas, ’27, and Lucia, ’29, and one future Falcon, Xavier. This year, we also thank Board members Jenny Malin Cole, ’84, Matthew Williams, ’91, Tracy Broussard, ’87, and Susan Afeman, who have completed their terms, and welcome new members Farha Khan, Brad Pellegrin, Jennifer Shuffler and King Munson.
Anchors Aweigh! The doors of the Lafayette Campus Enrichment Center will open in late fall 2016! The front building at the Lower School will house Music, Theatre, Robotics, Art, World Languages, Science and Technology, as well as administrative offices and the Chapel and Library spaces. We’re achieving our goal of completing ESA’s Lafayette Campus thanks to the hard work of a motivated group of supporters led by Bernie Dupré. “The Enrichment Center wouldn’t be possible without the amazing support of our Anchor Society, over 40 individuals and families who have donated nearly $2,000,000 toward the project,” says Dr. Baker. “Their commitment is an outward and visible sign of the idea that inspired us all as we began this campaign: it is up to us to make a difference in the lives of our children and the students who will follow in their footsteps. It is up to us to lay the foundation for the future.”
Thank you to our Anchor Society donors!

Dr. Andrew Armond (top left) joined the ESA community last fall as chaplain and religion teacher. Dr. Armond and his family moved to Acadiana from Oklahoma, where he was Assistant Professor of English at Oklahoma Baptist University. A Louisiana native, Dr. Armond earned a B.A. from Louisiana Tech, and holds M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in religion and literature from Baylor University. His vision for chapel builds on ESA’s traditions:
I want students to be spiritually challenged, to examine their own religious tradition and to explore what their place is in it. Chapel should be a sacred space where the community comes together and feels safe to share and be vulnerable, where we can take ourselves seriously. We can have silliness, but chapel is also where we relate based on something deeper, and that’s the community that we have here. 2015-2016 chapels, clockwise from top: in their year-end chapel, 5th graders offer a gift to the Lower School; open mic features original music, poetry and fiction; the Honor Council begins each year with an educational chapel; teacher Alicia Faciane used clay to illustrate life lessons; PreK-4 students wrote and performed their own play; the Venerable Tsering Phuntsok, a Buddhist monk from Bir, India, shared traditions from his faith.
State Champs!! ESA Golf won the Division IV State Championship for the second year in a row. The squad of Oliver Nickel, Ethan Thibodeaux, Riley Nickel, Ben Adams, Alex Billeaud and Jacob Billeaud led with confidence throughout the two-day tournament and finished 34 strokes ahead of the runners-up.
ESA Girls’ Track & Field took home the 2016 State Championship. The team’s State successes include: 3200, Samantha Withers, 1st, Aline Malek, 2nd; 4x100 relay (Hailie and Kailie Williams, Sarah Pierre and Rosemary Dupré), 1st; 4 x 400 relay (Christiaan Thibodeaux, Aline Malek, Samantha Withers, Breigh Rodriguez), 1st; 800, Samantha Withers, 1st, Breigh Rodriguez, 3rd; 100, Kailie Williams, 3rd; 1600, Samantha Withers, 1st, Aline Malek, 2nd; shot put, Sarah Pierre, 1st. Congratulations, Falcons!

Sidney Hebert Athletes of the Year Sarah Pierre, ’16, (right) pushed
through injuries and obstacles to build a solid career in ESA Volleyball and Track & Field. After leading the volleyball team to the State quarterfinals, Sarah was selected to play in the Louisiana High School Coaches Association East-West All-Star Volleyball match in November. In the spring, her first place finishes in shot put and as part of the 4x100 relay helped the team bring home the State title. Her competitive spirit provides inspiration for the younger athletes she never fails to encourage. Sarah will attend Spring Hill College.
Riley Nickel, ’16, (left), played
critical roles on two state championship teams this year. In the fall, Riley placed 8th in the State Cross Country meet, and helped the team earn its second state title in a row. In the spring, he shot a 74 on Day Two of the State Golf tournament, the squad’s low score of the day, and led ESA to its second golf title in two years. In between, Riley started and provided leadership for the varsity basketball team that took the first seed to double overtime in the second round of the playoffs. His quiet confidence and discipline set the tone for ESA athletic success. Riley will enter the honors program at Occidental College in southern California this fall.
Heroes and Horrors The Lower School choir presented The Lion King Jr. (above) in April. The cast of more than 60 students worked hard all spring to deliver a performance filled with beautiful music, humor and dramatic moments. Congratulations, cast and crew! In Cade, students entertained audiences with three nights of Little Shop of Horrors (right). David Louis, ’17, and Angelle Bourgeois, ’17, played the lead roles of Seymour and Audrey, while Jess Tetnowski, ’16, took on the role of Audrey II.
Showcasing the Arts The Lafayette campus welcomed students, parents, grandparents and guests to Fine Arts Night in April. Artistic creations lined the walkways, with artwork on display by students from PreK-3 through 5th grade in a variety of styles and media. The cast of The Lion King, Jr. performed a preview of their April 28th show, and 5th graders followed with Acadian round dances they learned in their French classes. Thanks to our visual and performing arts teachers, our volunteers and our students for an extraordinary exhibition!

Honoring Alumni At the 2016 commencement ceremony, the ESA Board of Trustees presented the Trustees Award to Clint Freeland, Jody Kochansky and Will McKinnon, all from the Class of 1986, for their leadership in initiating and completing the three-year Alumni Matching Gift Challenge, which raised more than $180,000 for the Tates/Tutwiler Fund for scholarships. The fund now totals more than $870,000, and provides assistance to a growing number of ESA students each year.

If we are lucky in life, we willfind a handful of institutions with which we fall in love, and which shape us into smarter, kinder, wiser, more caring, more thoughtful people. ESA is just such an institution, and we are all lucky to have spent a portion of our lives here... A place that provided us with wonderful nourishment when we needed it. And for that reason, ESA will remain one of the institutions I get the most joy out of supporting. Will McKinnon, ‘86
