GRATITUDE REP ORT 2020-2021

Letter from Our Headmaster September 2021 Dear Friends, As you all know, the 2020-2021 school year was unlike any other. We’re proud to say that our students, faculty, and staff showed true resilience, whether by adapting to COVID-19 protocols on campus or, in some cases, by staying up to date with classes while quarantining at home. They accepted changes to events, trips, and chapel with grace and cheer. While the year had significant challenges, collectively we emerged stronger as a school community, and our students’ successes in academics, athletics and the arts proved once again that what we do here matters. Last November, we launched our Annual Fund appeal using strength as our overarching theme. We’re happy to report we surpassed our goal, with many first-time donors. As we begin this school year, I want to thank you in advance for your continued support. We are truly grateful for your partnership and for the trust you put in ESA. Your gifts send a message to our faculty and staff that you believe in their ability to bring out the best in ESA students and to prepare them to leave their marks in the world beyond the oaks. On behalf of our students, faculty, and staff, Thank You!

Paul Baker, PhD Headmaster

LEGACY GIVING

1979 LEADERSHIP SOCIETY

The Smedes-Jardine Legacy Guild honors individuals who have provided for the school through deferred gifts such as bequests, life insurance, annuities, and trust agreements. The society is named in honor of Mrs. Smedes-Jardine, who donated the property where ESA now stands to the Episcopal Diocese of Western Louisiana. Planned gifts may be directed by the donor to provide unrestricted income or to be used for designated purposes such as endowment, capital improvements or program areas.

The following donors made gifts of $5,000 or more to ESA’s 2020-2021 Annual Fund. Supporting the Annual Fund gives the school maximum flexibility to respond to current year needs and priorities that directly impact the student experience. The school highly values donor confidence in its ability to allocate charitable dollars where most needed as well as having the faith in the school’s mission that these gifts represent.

“When schools ask for money beyond tuition, they’re asking stakeholders to ensure that the best-trained, most committed adults are available to help students become everything they can be. Without that extra push financially from donors, virtually no school can achieve its goals.” — James McManus, Executive Director, CAIS

The 2020-2021 Gratitude Report represents the giving period of July 1, 2020 - June 30, 2021. We sincerely regret if we have made an error and ask that you contact us at 337.321.6795 to report any corrections. Thank you so much for your support of Episcopal School of Acadiana.

“Donating to the Annual Fund, supporting the Falcon Club, and contributing to Tates/ Tut means that you are gifting a learning experience for students who ache for the opportunity. It also means that as faculty, we aren’t limited. We have the possibilities of trying something new, enhancing what we already do, and making sure our classrooms are equipped with the very best tools and minds in this area.” — Jennifer Desormeaux Graycheck, ’01, ESA Faculty and Coach

LOWER SCHOOL CHROMEBOOKS In 2020-2021, we invested in classroom sets of Chromebooks for kindergarten, first, and second grade classes. In kindergarten, the Chromebooks became part of small group rotations. In addition to working with teachers and completing independent skills-based and hands-on projects, students can use programs and games on the Chromebooks to practice math and reading skills. The devices are also used for assessments, such as MAP testing, which allow teachers to gauge student’s strengths and areas that need more attention. Using Chromebooks for these short activities help students to learn how to work with the devices. When they get their own Chromebooks in third grade, they are ready for more advanced technology-based learning.

SMART TVS World Languages students and teachers benefitted from a classroom technology upgrade this year. Smart TVs replaced the decade-old interactive whiteboards that were no longer serving their purpose. The World Languages classrooms are the second set of rooms to benefit from the new interactive TVs, following all of the classrooms in the Enrichment Center on the Lafayette Campus. We’ll continue to upgrade interactive displays in classrooms on both campuses as needed to facilitate teaching, virtual conversations, and student presentations. ESA also invests in Google Workspace for Education Plus, a program that provides each student from third grade on with an esafalcons. com Gmail account, a Google Drive account, and access to Google Docs, Sheets, Photos, and many more applications, including Slides, which students use for presentations on Smart TVs! Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all others. — MARCUS TULLIUS CICERO

SIXTH GRADE SCIENCE For science teacher Bullard Jones and his sixth grade students, the picnic tables in the middle school quad serve as workbenches. Goggles on and surrounded by tools, they confidently approach the day’s challenge. Mr. Jones asked ESA to invest in simple tools that he uses to teach students physical science concepts through hands-on projects. “We use simple machines to make simple machines,” says Mr. Jones. In an activity completed last year, each group used hand drills, clamps, and handsaws to create a pulley system. Once they finished, they explored the mechanical advantages of pulleys and talked about how the simple machines they used helped with the project. Mr. Jones’ ninth grade physical science students use the tools and other everyday objects for hands-on learning as well. They learn about buoyancy and forces through the cardboard boat project, solids and structures as they build sturdy towers out of wooden dowels, sound and waves through creating musical instruments, and motion in the design of water rockets.
