GRATITUDE REPORT 2019-2020

Joy is the simplest form of gratitude. — KARL BARTH

ESA GRATITUDE REPORT : 2019-2020

LETTER FROM OUR HEADMASTER Dear ESA Family, As I look back over the 2019-2020 school year, I can’t help but stand in awe of everything that we accomplished together. It made me take a second look at the word “community.” There are several levels of meaning and etymology of the word community. Going all the way back to the Old Latin derivation of the second half of the word (munire (L), from moene (OL), a wall or fortification), it speaks of working together to defend or protect one another. And at the most fundamental level, that’s what we did last year. We worked together to ensure that the mission and values of ESA were protected, that our students were able to engage with our outstanding faculty and that the quality educational experience for which we are known continued without a pause. Frankly, it’s what we do every year, but the challenges of the last school year highlighted the importance of that mission in a unique way. Because we were also celebrating our 40th birthday, we looked back over the years to honor those people (founders, teachers, donors) who have made ESA what it is today. So, this Gratitude Report is doubly special to me. It shines a bright light not on dollar amounts, but on the opportunities and experiences they provide to our students. It also highlights the dedication of our community (past and present) to the ideals and values of ESA. When we all join together as one ESA and invest in the future of our school, there is no limit to what we can create to design an inspiring and unforgettable experience for our students. Thank you, one and all, for helping us protect this special place and advance its mission of scholarship and honor beneath the oaks! Areté!

Paul Baker, PhD Headmaster

ESA GRATITUDE REPORT : 2019-2020

GIVING

This gratitude report looks back on the 2019-2020 school year, during which we celebrated ESA’s 40th anniversary. As we thank everyone who contributed last year, we’d also like to recognize ESA’s founders. These pioneers mortgaged their houses, signed personal notes, and invested their time, treasure, and faith in the dream that was ESA. The foundation they built has grown and thrived both in Cade and Lafayette, and we remain forever grateful for the legacy they created.

O Lord that lends me life, lend me a heart replete with thankfulness. — WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

giving LEGACY GIVING The Smedes-Jardine Legacy Guild honors individuals who have provided for the school through deferred gifts such as bequests, life insurance, annuities, and trust agreements. The society is named in honor of Mrs. Betty SmedesJardine, who donated the property where ESA now stands to the Episcopal Diocese of Western Louisiana. Planned gifts may be directed by the donor to provide unrestricted income or to be used for designated purposes such as endowment, capital improvements or program areas. Martha B. Brown Edna and Jim Cooper

1979 LEADERSHIP SOCIETY The following donors made gifts of $5,000 or more to ESA’s 2019-2020 Annual Fund. Supporting the Annual Fund gives the school maximum flexibility to respond to current year needs and priorities that directly impact the student experience. The school highly values donor confidence in its ability to allocate charitable dollars where most needed, as well as having the faith in the school’s mission that these gifts represent. $15,000 and over Anonymous $10,000 to $14,999 Mardi and Peter North Liz and Andrew Robertson Annie and Joe Spell

ESA GRATITUDE REPORT : 2019-2020

TECHNOLOGY Along with the usual Smartboards, desktop computers, Chromebooks, projectors, cameras, microphones, and many other technology items that need upgrading or replacing each year, this year the tech team has invested in Owl cameras and tripods for 360-degree filming of classes. The videos can be live streamed or shared on our learning management system for students who have to quarantine or isolate due to COVID-19. We’ve also increased our internet bandwidth, purchased additional webcams for Google Meets, and invested in the Seesaw learning platform to expand communication options for Lower School teachers, students, and parents. Your support of Annual Fund provides resources for technology, as well as for academic, athletic, arts, leadership, and other extracurricular programs. Thank you!

Gratitude is the sign of noble souls. — AESOP

TECHNOLOGY

The technology resources we had in place pre-COVID allowed ESA teachers to switch quickly and effectively into online learning in the spring. This summer we were able to add additional resources that will serve our teachers and students whether we’re inperson or at a distance. Right now, flexibility is the key with technology, and we’re grateful to know we can get what we need. MARK BROUSSARD, IT DIRECTOR

I’ve always been interested in film and how films are made. The resources of the ExLabs program allow students to create whatever they can visualize. With the drones and high-quality digital cameras, you can see something and make it happen. The skills taught in the program are skills I wanted going forward, and I didn’t want to miss the opportunity to learn them now. MATTHEW BUSH, ’21

ESA GRATITUDE REPORT : 2019-2020

BASEBALL LIGHTS

The poles are here, and the new lighting system for the baseball field will be installed this fall. Thanks to the generosity of the donors - parents, grandparents, alumni, faculty, and trustees - ESA Baseball raised $96,176 for six poles, the lighting system, and installation costs. The Falcons plan to play under the lights when the season opens in February 2021!

EPISCOPAL SCHOOL OF ACADIANA

P.O. Box 380 • Cade, LA 70519 www.ESAcadiana.com

For his Eagle Scout project, Hayden Boagni, ’21, built an archeology box for the Lafayette Campus. Hayden’s design includes a cover to protect the site and a bench for resting between digs. Now the Lower School’s budding archeologists can search for artifacts in the shade of the oaks!
