Marek Janowski is regarded as one of the most important representatives of the classical German orchestra culture. For many people, Carlos Kleiber (1930–2004) is the most important conductor of the late 20th century. He was certainly the most problematic one. Having grown up with the burden of his dominant father Erich Kleiber, he struggled with his demand for perfection throughout his whole life. Being one of the most sought-after conductors, Carlos Kleiber did not accept any permanent appointment for years. His number of appearances was small and his official discography minimal, however, his charisma was legendary and he has a large number of fans. The guarantor of magic musical moments remained a mystery, though. His biographer Alexander Werner has tried to approach Kleiber, the man and artist, by finding out about the stages and stations of his life and questioning many of his contemporaries about the ‘secret of Kleiber’.

For a long time, left-handedness has been regarded as ‘deviation from the norm’, and musical instruments usually are designed for right-handers even today. But the question arises whether or not the handedness, i.e. the preference for using the left or right hand for certain tasks, also plays a role with such complex activities as music-making. The changed playing situation with instruments for lefthanders touches on a topic that has to a large extent remained undiscovered and tabooed up to now. After a look at history, the book describes the current state of dealing with left-handedness in music-making – including all consequences not only for the common order of musicmaking but especially for the capability and health of the performing musicians. The author, a cellist and ‘right-hand playing’ left-hander, analyzes the musical practice of left-handed ‘normal players’ and left-handed players on numerous instruments from the perspective of an orchestra musician, instrumental teacher and educationalist. The analysis is concluded with recommendations for practising, teaching tips and answers to questions of parents of left-handed children.

This book deals with three fields that are of interest to both singers and lovers of singing: the fascinating historical development from the Greek songs accompanied by aulos or kithara via the richly ornamented Gregorian chant to the heyday of the bel canto in the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as the demands of new music; the anatomical and physiological foundations of voice production, explained by a number of exact photographic and graphic examples; the technical foundations of singing in five main chapters which are worked on according to the disposition and aptitude of the students: posture, breathing function, intonation – function of the language, approaches to and training of the pronunciation – equalizing the voice, messa di voce, legato – range, volume, velocity and virtuosity – dramatic expression and interpretation.

Lachenmann’s central essays such as ‘Klangtypen der Neuen Musik’ (Types of Sound in New Music), ‘Die gefährdete Kommunikation’ (Endangered Communication), ‘Zum Problem des musikalisch Schönen heute’ (The Problem of Beauty in Music Today), and his essays on Mahler, Schönberg and Nono are among the most important testimonies of autonomous musical thought in our time. The first complete edition of Fanny Hensel’s ‘Diaries’ were among the most important new publications in the field of music books in autumn 2002. This edition has been awarded the German Music Edition Prize for 2003.

People’s hands are different, as we all know. But what is important when playing a musical instrument? Dr. Liane Simmel’s Dance Medicine finally accommodates the demand for a book that especially appeals to dancers and dance teachers of all genres. Simmel explains the most important aspects of dance medicine and basic medical knowledge relevant to dancers in a concise and comprehensible way, accompanied by numerous photos and illustrations. She has developed exercises to make her theoretical knowledge applicable to everyday problems and gives useful advice on planning training units, warming up and cooling down, regenerating one’s body and applying first aid. Dance Medicine also deals with the mental and physical pitfalls of the profession and how to avoid them, the importance of a healthy and balanced diet, finding ways to cope with stress and physical strain and training responsibly in order to prevent injuries.

Tanzplan Deutschland e.V. was initiated in 2005 by the German Federal Cultural Foundation to develop a wide range of measures that would ensure the highest levels of sustainability for dance until 2010. Ingo Diehl and Friederike Lampert, the editors in charge, are both dancers, dance teachers and dance researchers. 2 DVDs will show examples of basic trainings in all techniques.

Dr. Liane Simmel is director of the Institute for Dance Medicine ‘Fit for Dance’ and a board member of Tanz Medizin Deutschland e.V. After having studied dance in Munich and in New York, she started working as a dancer and choreographer at theatres all over Europe. Simmel then decided to study medicine in order to get to know the dancer’s body inside out. She now works as a licensed doctor for dance medicine, osteopathy and spiral dynamics and teaches dance.

Ingo Diehl and Friederike Lampert, the editors in charge, are both dancers, dance teachers and dance researchers.

The world’s longest art gallery

Architecture influences the living space of human beings more strongly than any other artistic genre. The dictionary contains articles on the life, work and influence of important master builders and architects – from Alvar Aalto to Peter Zumthor. The texts explain terms like abacus or dwarf gallery, inform about institutions and architectural awards and give an overview of the epochs. Also included are detailed review articles, e.g. the description of secular and sacred construction works or explanations of the building materials and techniques.

A Trabi that breaks through the Berlin Wall, a brotherhood kiss between Socialists – who does not know the pictures that went around the world and today are the main features of the longest, still existing section of the Berlin Wall. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and in spring 1990, 118 artists from 21 countries decorated the east side of the Berlin Wall with pictures of their thoughts and feelings on the political upheaval of that time. Thus, they created an unrivalled work of art with a length of 1,316 metres between Ostbahnhof and Oberbaumbrücke: the East Side Gallery. In 2009, the pictures were restored by their creators. Every day, numerous visitors from all over the world, especially young people, come to see this symbol of freedom and reunification of a people as well as experience the uniqueness of this place.

Christoph Wetzel, born in Bautzen in 1944, studied art history, German studies and history at the art academies of Stuttgart, Munich, Vienna and the universities of Munich, Vienna and Constance. After having worked as a grammar school teacher and publishing editor, he now works as a freelance author. Heidi Wetzel, born in Bad Polzin in 1944, studied art history, German studies and history at the universities of Munich, Bochum and Constance. She is a translator, freelance editor and author as well as manager of an editorial bureau.
