Norman Ryan Schott Music New York

Dear reader,

Liebe Leserinnen und Leser,

As a young piano student, my teacher set Bach’s Französische Suiten in front of me and posed a question: ’What makes up a Bach Suite?’ I puzzled over the answer. ’They are divided into several movements’, I said. ’OK’, she nodded, ’but what are those movements?’ she asked. I was stumped. ’They are all DANCES’, she exclaimed. It was a revelation. Of course they were! One of the great masterworks of the solo piano repertoire was based exclusively upon traditional dance forms. I never thought of music and dance the same way again.

Music and dance have been inextricably linked for thousands of years and the happy marriage is alive and well in our times. Composers and choreographers continue to inspire one another in unique and wonderful ways and it is the fruits of these partnerships that we proudly highlight in this issue. We in New York are particularly excited about the World Première of Tobias Picker’s ballet Awakenings at The Lowry, Salford (22.9) by the London based Rambert Dance Company. Picker’s ballet is inspired by the Oliver Sacks’ book of the same name and choreographer Aletta Collins has developed an arresting new dance in partnership with the composer. Rambert takes Awakenings on tour in the UK during the 2010/11 season with the London première set for Sadler’s Wells (9.-13.11). In addition, we see the World Première in Berlin of Benjamin Schweitzer’s nach Hause (7.10) for three dancers and three instrumentalists (flute, bass clarinet and viola) with choreography by Martin Nachbar.

From such classics as Stravinsky’s Firebird and Scènes de Ballet (see our Repertoire feature), Weill’s Seven Deadly Sins, and Henze’s Undine to more recent works including Singleton’s TRUTH and Theodorakis’ Zorbas, there is such a rich panoply of contemporary dance and ballet to explore. Not to mention individual works by composers such as Ligeti, Bryars, Subotnick, Korngold, Vasks, Rota and others (highlighted on p. 17) that are frequently choreographed.

DANCE ! come the force of gravity which however ultimately wins the upper hand. The title is an allusion to the final entry in Andrée’s expedition logbook: “nach Hause 7 Uhr morgens” [’going home at 7 o’ clock in the morning’]. nach Hause is based on the fundamental concept of a performance as an ’expedition’. The progress of the work appears as a cycle spanning all phases from the preparation right up to the ultimate failure of the expedition. The climax is reached with a ’freeze’: a state of absolute motionless. The dimensions of this progress are heightened by the freedom to begin at a different point within the cycle for each performance – alongside the ‘narrative’ variant, numerous other combinations are possible in which the beginning and end of the events do not coincide with the beginning and end of the performance itself. Based upon true life stories and inspired by Dr. Oliver Sacks’ book of the same name, Tobias Picker’s Awakenings is an engrossing and lyrical score that features choreography by Aletta Collins. The premiere performance marks the beginning of a season long tour for the new ballet throughout the UK in 2010/11. Rambert presents the London première of Awakenings at Sadler’s Wells on 9 November in addition to 24 more performances at eight different venues in the UK as part of the fall tour. The spring tour, with dates and venues to be announced, continues in 2011.

Berlin (D) In 1897, the Swedish engineer Salomon Andrée attempted a flight from Spitzbergen to the North Pole in a hydrogen balloon. This project was doomed to failure: Andrée and his companions perished after the crash landing of the balloon and their subsequent months of progress on foot on the island of Kvitøya. The volatility of this type of expedition is combined with the intangibility of music and dance. Andrée’s balloon expedition has parallels with a core characteristic of dance: levitation, elevation and the attempt to over-

Belfast (UK), 29.5.2011 Porto (P), October 2011 Copenhagen (DK) In his first work since joining Schott Music, Gerald Barry continues his exploration and fascination with Beethoven. Stephen Richardson reprises

his role as Beethoven (a role he first made his own in the earlier work ‘Beethoven’), framed by SATB choir. Barry has set extracts from some of the letters Beethoven wrote at the very end of his life to his publisher, Schott and Sons, Mainz. The music reflects the composer’s volatile character and his musical concerns, revealing the touching nature of his relationship with his last publisher.

Further performance: 6.11. Dresden (D) Sternlose Nacht consists of nine movements combining two contrasting elements: a cycle of the seasons with poetry by Georg Trakl (in the movements I, IV, V and IX) and a reflection on the two major tragedies of the Second World War: the bombing of Dresden and Hiroshima in the winter and summer of 1945. In the third movement ’Grabstein in Dresden’, two narrators provide an account of the events of February 1945 accompanied by choir and orchestra. In the seventh movement ’Grabstein in Hiroshima’, a mezzo soprano sings the report of a young boy who survived the atomic bomb attack in the summer of 1945. The text of the eighth movement, the emotional poem ’Gruß vom Angelus’ by Gershom Scholem, is a pessimistic summary of these reports of man’s inhumanity to man and is sung by a soprano accompanied by two trumpets and percussion.

In the programme note for the work, Gondai explains the philosophical background behind the unusual title: ‘Decathexis describes the way to reach nirvana; that is to say, it is resignation of all worldly affection, release from every relationship, and the perception of eternity fusing with universe after leaving the limited body.’

Danza Petrificada was commissioned by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra to celebrate the inauguration of Maestro Riccardo Muti as the orchestra’s new Music Director. Bernard Rands writes: ’Maestro Muti’s request was that the new work would, in some way, pay tribute to Mexico on the 200th anniversary of that country’s revolution and the 100th anniversary of Mexico’s independence. The title comes from a beautiful poem by Octavio Paz in which he describes a Mexican village. ‘…festin de formas, danza petrificada bajo las nubes que hacen y se deshacen y no acaban de hacerse, siempre en tránsito hacis su forma venidera…’(’…a banquet of forms, a petrified dance under the clouds that make and unmake and never stop making themselves, always in transit toward their future forms…’). Such a wonderful description of the phenomenon of music itself!’ This is one of the many collaborations between the composer and Riccardo Muti which have marked their close friendship over many years. The première performance will be televised nationwide the following week on National Public Television’s series Great Performances.

Saint Augustine interpreted these emotional pyrotechnics as the mystic union of the soul with God, others recognised the mythological cult of the gods of vegetation Ischtar and Tammuz and numerous interpretations have drawn a parallel between Sulamith and Maria Magdalena who also experienced the Resurrection in the garden – a metaphor of Paradise. These facets are all combined in this ’Danse sacrée’ in which the physicality of dance stands in contradictory confrontation with spiritual content – additionally providing the opportunity for a maelstrom of ’beauteous’ musical expression.

Enjott Schneider

The trautonium is one of the great unknowns in the history of instrument making. Although it almost made it to serial production under the name ’Volkstrautonium’ at the beginning of the 1930s, it subsequently became an experimental object for specialists. What fascination does this ’living fossil’ of an instrument have for a composer of the 21st century? The tonal quality which embodies the pioneer spirit of early electro-acoustic sound production. In Blindflug, this sound wanders into the orchestral texture and achieves its independence in a highly diversified dialogue. The title refers to the composition process – a substantial

part of the score was completed prior to the completion of the reconstruction of the trautonium, as if in a state of ’semi-blindness’, and the character of this ’blind flight’ has also permeated the character of the work. A rhapsodic form envelops details which whizz past and disappear again, in the manner of flying objects. There are more sudden changes of direction rather than clear orientation, and individual fragments of Morse Code are drowned out in noise between brief phases of stabilisation … The end is not quite a crash landing, but is certainly somewhat bumpy. Jahrhunderts an diesem „lebenden Fossil“? Benjamin Schweitzer

• 16 October 2010 · Houston, TX (USA) Hobby Center, Zilhka Hall Musiqa Houston Conductor Sarah Jobin She Told Me This... reimagines musical ideas and themes from my opera The Bonesetter’s Daughter through one character, Ruth, the American born daughter of a Chinese mother with many secrets. These secrets have crippled Ruth and shaped her life, though she knows nothing of her mother’s past. Guided by the ghost of her grandmother, known only as Precious Auntie, she uncovers these stories as her mother’s memory slowly fades. This work will focus more overtly on the nature of stories and storytelling with Ruth channeling the voices of her mother, the ghost of her grandmother, and the unmistakable presence of the family’s Chinese past. Like most Americans, the idea of this past mythic homeland shapes the narrative of the family’s present in America. We carry these stories in our bones.

Bae This evening will provide the opportunity to experience the juxtaposition of an orchestra from the Far East, the Western composer Herbert Willi and an international audience. The work composed for this occasion fuses the tonal qualities of both worlds. Pointed rhythms and pronounced melodic sections alternate with fanfare passages and are unified in the composer’s typical personal style. ‘I aim to take the listener on an inner journey heralding joy, trust in the future and striving for a peaceful world. I hope that The Echo of Peace will be received as a work for peace.’ Herbert Willi

DANCE ! T

erpsichore, The Muse of Dance, has reason to rejoice in the commencement of the season 2010/11 as two new ballet scores enrich the repertoire: Awakenings by Tobias Picker (WP 22.9, Salford, UK) and nach Hause by Benjamin Schweitzer (WP 7.10, Berlin, D). These two World Premières have prompted us to present both new works and classics from the ballet repertoire on the following pages in three categories. ’New ballets’ feature original ballet scores which have been premiered over the last ten years. ’Choreographers’ Favourites’ is devoted to selected works which have been regularly performed as ballets since 2004 and ’Dance Classics’ showcases a representative selection of core classics of ballet literature which have already more than earned their permanent inclusion in dance repertoire around the world.

T

New ballets since 2000 Gavin Bryars Amjad ballet music after Tchaikovsky for 2 violas, cello and piano (2007) original choreography by Édouard Lock Commissioned by La La La Human Steps 90‘ The starting point for Édouard Lock’s ballet for La La La Human Steps was those moments that one might call ’iconic’ in Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty. He gave me a list of pieces from the ballet suites and asked if I could take this music and restructure it, while retaining the essence of the original music. My aim was to find a balance between providing a direct

and recognizable reference to the Tchaikovsky source and my own compositional idiom.

Choreographer David Dawson has long admired the music of Gavin Bryars. He first used Bryars music, String Quartet No. 3, in his ballet Reverence which he created for the Mariinsky Ballet in St Petersburg in 2005. Since then, Reverence has been performed by the Dresden Semperoper Ballet (where Dawson is resident choreographer) and Holland’s Het Nationale Ballet. Stefan Heucke Die Ordnung der Erde Tanzoratorium nach dem Gilgamesh-Epos für Tänzer, Sänger und großes Orchester, op. 30 (1997-1998) Textfassung vom Komponisten Choreographie von Bernd Schindowski Auftragswerk des Ballett Schindowski am Musiktheater im Revier 145‘ Stefan Heucke’s dance oratorio Die Ordnung der Erde, commissioned by the Ballett Schindowski for the Musiktheater im Revier in Gelsenkirchen and premiered there on 27 January 2001, is a dance theatre work composed not only for a ballet company but also requiring a complete operatic ensemble. The protagonists appear in double roles as singers and dancers. The plot is based on the Babylonian Gilgamesh-Epic: Gilgamesh, the king of Uruk, aims to rid the world of evil with the aid of his friend Engidu. With their meddling in the order of the earth, the two incite the wrath of the gods and Engidu must die in atonement. Gilgamesh cannot accept the death of his friend and travels through the world in search of the ultimate questions of life.

Awakenings (2010) inspired by Dr. Oliver Sacks’ book Awakenings choreographed by Aletta Collins Commissioned for Rambert Dance Company by Daniel Katz Limited 25’

Oscar Wilde’s fairy tale of ’The Selfish Giant’ is a classic work of world literature. Once the giant has banned the children from playing in his garden, winter sets in with snow, frost, the North wind and hailstones. Winter is followed by spring, but not in the giant’s garden. Having realised in his winter solitude how selfishly he has behaved, the giant welcomes the children back into his garden.

A lively set of variations for string orchestra originally written as a ballet for choreographer Henri Oguike. Tiger Dancing takes its name from The Tyger, a song Steve Martland wrote based on a setting of William Blake’s poem of the same name.

Fazil Say Patara Hommage à Mozart (KV 331) Quartett für Sopran (oder Violine/Viola), Nayflöte (oder Altflöte/Altblockflöte), Klavier und Schlagzeug (2005) Auftragswerk von Mozart-two-6 für das Tanzquartier Wien 28‘ In the work commissioned by Mozart-two-6 for the Tanzquartier Wien, Fazil Say has transported the Viennese composer Mozart to the beach of the ancient city Patara in his own native Turkey. Say has developed the variation theme of the famous Piano Sonata in A major KV 331 in Patara, conjuring up a large-scale scenic rhapsody reflecting the atmosphere of the landscape. The listener

experiences a series of tonal scenes with evocations of fairy tales, oriental colour and rituals.

Benjamin Schweitzer anordnen/verschieben für fünf Instrumentalisten und drei Tänzer (2004) Choreographie von Martin Nachbar 29‘ anordnen/verschieben, Benjamin Schweitzer’s first dance theatre project, was commissioned by the Sächsischer Musikrat [Saxony Music Council] together with the Berlin choreographer Martin Nachbar. The concentrated abstract ‘chamber dance theatre’ is based on an improvisatory structure in which seven different musical dance subjects can be combined and overlapped in a perpetually changing order.

Alvin Singleton TRUTH a choral ballet for chorus, dancers and ensemble of 10 instruments (2005) based on the life of Sojourner Truth text by Carman Moore (engl.) 30‘ Premiered by VocalEssence in 2006, TRUTH, through music, choreography and words, depicts key moments in the life of Isabella Baumfree the slave and her transformation into the legendary human rights crusader Sojourner Truth. Alvin Singleton’s music bolsters this story’s drama with its edgy and eclectic mix of propulsive percussive instrumentation and a cappella choral utterances.

Mikis Theodorakis Zorbas (Reduced Version) Suite-Ballet in 23 scenes for solo alto, mixed chorus and chamber orchestra adaption for chamber orchestra by Dimitris Michas (1987-1988/2008) (griech.) 105‘ One of the most popular dance scenes in musical history is without doubt the exhilarating whirlwind of a dance by the two protagonists of the ballet: Zorba and John which has long gone down in history as the epitome of the celebration of life. The ballet, premiered in the arena in Verona in 1988, is based on the original film music by Mikis

Theodorakis and the original choreography by Lorca Massine, with the addition of numerous international favourites which have already conquered the world as hit songs. Mikis Theodorakis has recently completed an arrangement of the 105minute work for chamber orchestra which is currently under offer for its World Première performance!

Stewart Wallace Peter Pan Ballet in three acts for full orchestra (2000) Commissioned by Fort Worth Dallas Ballet 100‘ In 2000 Stewart Wallace was tasked with composing a score to an already existing choreography for the Dallas Fort Worth Ballet, indeed opposite the way a ballet is normally created. A score grounded in tonality but featuring free use of dissonance, Peter Pan features thick, colorful textures that succeed in enhancing, rather than distracting from, the choreography. Wallace also engages in a healthy dose of borrowing, with snippets of Bernstein‘s Candide, Britten’s Peter Grimes and Tchaikovksy’s The Nutcracker Suite handsomely interspersed throughout the score.

The libretto of The Macau Bride was written by the renowned Macao writer Choi San and choreographed by Ying Eding. The dance drama which was commissioned by the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao SAR Government in 2000 and premiered at the 12th Macao Arts Festival 2001, narrates the love story of the Chinese sailor Qin Gao and the Portuguese damsel Maria, the daughter of his captain. After she has been kidnapped by pirates, Qin Gao and the other sailors set off impulsively to rescue her regardless of their own safety. Assisted by his men and native Africans, Qin is able to vanquish the pirates and finally marry his beloved Maria.

MÁTYÁS SEIBER 50th Anniversary of death · 25 September 2010 Mátyás Seiber Photo: Gabriele Buckley

Mátyás Seiber was travelling through South Africa on a lecture and concert tour when he became involved in a car accident on 24 September 1960 during an expedition in the Kruger National Park and died from his injuries. Mátyás Seiber had achieved international renown certainly by 1951 with his major work Ulysses and had acquired a reputation as a non-conformist composer with a love of jazz and a much-respected teacher. The international public was deeply shocked by his death and especially his pupils, friends and colleagues. György Ligeti composed Atmosphères as a musical commemoration of Seiber’s tragic demise. Seiber left his home country of Hungary in the 1920s to settle in Germany where he met with less opposition to his progressive aesthetics. In 1928, he was successful in his initiation and establishment of an academic study course for jazz at Dr. Hoch’s Konservatorium in Frankfurt am Main. He adopted British nationality after being forced to flee from Germany in 1935. Shortly after his arrival, Michael Tippett invited him to take up a post as lecturer in composition at Morley College where he was subsequently able to influence an entire generation of composers including Peter Racine Fricker, Alexander Goehr, Anthony Gilbert, Anthony Milner, Hugh Wood and Don Banks. There is currently the stirrings of a revival of his works in the concert hall, which is revealing his surprisingly innovative and highly independent musical output. One of the highlights is the performance of Ulysses on 6 October in Carnegie Hall, with the American Symphony Orchestra directed by Leon Botstein.

50 years on: from “kurier” to “aktuell” The first issue of the monthly publisher’s news magazine ’Schott-Kurier’ which originated under the auspices of Bernhard von Watzdorf was printed on 1 September 1960. The lead article was devoted to a single event: the triumphant World Première of Hans Werner Henze’s Der Prinz von Homburg. Although the Schott-Kurier was not Schott’s first regular newsletter, it is the direct predecessor of our current schott aktuell. During the 1990s, the newspaper format of the Schott-Kurier was replaced by a magazine format with a new title. You can view the first issue as an e-paper in the archives of the schott aktuell pages at www.schott-music.com/aktuell.

When Igor Stravinsky was commissioned by the New York Impresario Billy Rose in the summer of 1944 to compose a ballet work for the musical revue ’The Seven Lively Arts’ which would bring the composer a fee of 5000 dollars, it appeared that the course was set for a resounding success on Broadway. However, Stravinsky was forced to witness a severely cut version of his Scènes de Ballet in the performances given at the Ziegfeld Theatre, and the revue was axed after 184 performances. The first complete concert performance of Stravinsky’s ballet did not take place until the following year conducted by the composer and the first complete staged version was only seen in its full glory in 1948 in a performance by the Sadler’s Wells Ballet with choreography by Frederick Ashton. Scènes de Ballet is an abstract ballet with no specifications for plot or staging and with its sequence of ensemble movements, pas de deux and solos displays it adherences to the structure of a classical ballet divertissement.
