Curiously, he had not written a concerto for a brass instrument, but this gap in his output is now closed with his Concerto per corno e orchestra. On 5 May Penderecki himself will conduct the world première with the Bremen Philharmonic Orchestra and soloist Radovan Vlatkovic. His short Adagietto from the opera Paradise Lost in the version for cor anglais and string orchestra (20062007) will be performed in the same concert, with Daisuke Nagaoka on the cor anglais.

The Finnish composer, pianist and conductor Olli Mustonen continues an intensive period of creativity with Vanha kirkko Petäjävedellä, commissioned by the Gstaad Menuhin Festival and premièred at the final concert of the Nuremberg International Organ Week - Musica Sacra. It follows the première of another orchestral work Jehkin Iivana from last year. An old church near Petäjävesi forms the works starting point. Mustonen evokes its history in each of the works movements Die Kirchenbauer, Die Berührung des Heiligen, Dämonen, Der heilige Christophorus and Apotheosis. After the community of Petäjävesi in the heart of Finland had waited two years for permission to build the church, they began to build it themselves in 1763. The small wooden church in the style of a log cabin stands on a peninsula between two lakes and was listed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in 1994.

Maxwell Davies writes: ‘The one movement Sonata for Violin and Piano traces an imaginary traffic free walk across Rome, taking its inspiration from a fantastic proposal in the book Progetti Frammenti di Architettura Italiana, by my oldest Roman friend, the architect Giuseppe Rebecchini. Although this walk will probably never be realised in practice, it is a wonderful fantasia, and while I do not wish to limit in any way the imaginations of players or listeners, I should point out that the opening of the Sonata refers back to my seventh ‘Naxos’ String Quartet.’

gether with his wife after his release. From 1941 he wrote, under the pseudonym of Kurt Held, four books about the girl Zora and her gang who, with courage, cunning and attitude, stand up against the greed, envy and injustice that characterizes the adult world in the Croatian town of Senj, represented by the unscrupulous fish farmer Karman and the policeman Begovic. Die rote Zora not only provides exciting entertainment for a young audience (aged 10+) but is also a plea against the oppression and social exclusion of the weak and for social justice and solidarity.

Mai 2008 · Trier (D) Dom Stefan Geiger, Posaune Josef Still, Orgel To the composer Enjott Schneider, Golgatha, the biblical place of crucification, is a symbol of both the transient and transcendental in human life. For his composition of the same name, he chose the form of a chaconne with introduction. Full of number symbolism, the work is premièred by the solo trombonist of the Hamburg NDR Symphony Orchestra and the organist of the Trier Cathedral to whom it has been dedicated.

Elf Humoresken für Klavier (2007) Commissioned by The Carnegie Hall Corporation 22’ ED 20445 (in preparation) • 4 May 2008 · New York, NY (USA) Carnegie Hall, Stern Auditorium Yefim Bronfman, piano Since Robert Schumann, the originally literary genre of the humorous sketch has turned into a cheerful, often subtly ironic and usually small musical form. Jörg Widmann, an ardent admirer and, in many respects, a living embodiment of the Romantic composer, wrote his Eleven Humoresques in the spirit of Schumann. He says about the pieces: 'The different forms of humour (or even its absence) have their different counterparts in the great variety of the musical forms, from miniature to fully developed, complex piano piece. I hope the performer will discover the characteristic tone of each of the
pieces and make it sound with a touch of mockery here, a dry touch there, and a touch of melancholy too, yet always with humour and subtlety.'

Broken Consort is made up of four self-contained pieces, three of which are for smaller groups within the ensemble. They pieces are linked by very short fanfare like interludes before the climax of the piece in the last movement when all instruments play together for the first time. Huw Watkins was commissioned to write the work by Music in the Round for Ensemble 360 in Sheffield.

uber’s Fra Diavolo, Bizet’s Carmen, Offenbach’s Les Contes d’Hoffmann, Wagner’s Der fliegende Holländer – all these operas, which appear in our current list of first nights, form an important strand of our stage catalogue. So alongside a rich list of operas of the 20th and 21st centuries, our catalogue contains numerous important works from the established operatic repertoire with, for example, revised librettos (such as Fra Diavolo) or new critical editions (such as Carmen and Les Contes d’Hoffmann) as well as performance material for works based on our complete critical editions (like the original version of Der fliegende Holländer or Boris Godunow by Mussorgsky). If you would like any further information, please email us at infoservice@schott-music.com. From our contemporary repertoire, we’d like to draw your attention to the world première of Elisabeth Naske’s family opera Die rote Zora (4.5.) in Lucerne and to the new production of Mark-Anthony Turnage’s Greek (15.5.) in Hanover. Bremen will see a production of Chaya Czernowin’s highly acclaimed Zaïde / Adama which was premièred at the 2006 Salzburg Festival (25.5.) and the Bavarian State Opera presents Henze’s Bassariden in the original version, including the interlude Das Urteil der Kalliope which was cut by the composer in the 1992 revision (19.5.).

Volker David Kirchner's Konzert für Horn und Orchester is a concerto in the original sense: The solo instrument stands out clearly from the overall sound in all three movements, the work fully exploring its tonal and technical possibilities. Kirchner has never been interested in pushing the boundaries of possibilities of the horn’s sound, preferring to revert to the mysticism of the Romantic era, the horn being considered its natural musical voice.

In order to open up fresh harmonies, he juxtaposes the solo horn (alternating between valve horn F-Bb and natural horn in F) with four differently tuned natural horns in the orchestra. The resulting natural harmonics lead to fascinating floating chord combinations, and with Ligeti's use of non-European rhythmic patterns provide captivating contrasts with the choralelike passages in which the tonal spectra are given special emphasis.

Herbert Willi Äon Konzert für Horn und Orchester (aus dem Zyklus „Montafon“) (2007) 16’ ◆ World Première Stefan Dohr · Radio-Symphonieorchester Wien · Yutaka Sado ◆ National Première Tokyo (J): 18.7.2008 Äon is the last part of Herbert Willi's 'Montafon' cycle in which the composer pays tribute to the valley of the same name in the Austrian province of Vorarlberg where he lives, inspired and fascinated by the unspoilt landscape and the 'audible silence' of the region. In all four instrumental concertos of the cycle, Willi’s music centres on the significance of silence and self-contemplation. In addition to the horn concerto, the cycle consists of the trumpet concerto Eirene (2001), the concerto for flute, oboe and orchestra …geraume Zeit… (2002-2003), and the clarinet concerto ego eimi (2005-2006). The title of the three-movement concerto Äon hints at the fact that many elements from the previous 'Montafon' works have been summed up and brought to completion here, as if marking the end of an era. In the two outer movements, the soloist can show off his brilliance and virtuosity; the middle movement is marked 'molto espressive, dolce'. The finale is characterized by a march rhythm which leads to tonal transfiguration and eventually to silence.

The piece lives up to its name, as Eötvös describes: 'English words were chosen for the noise-maker, containing a lot of sibilants. They are all to be whispered into the microphone, in somewhat voiced sounds. Most of the texts are nonsense, and the audience should hear the words as if someone were playing a hi-hat, or as if they were snatches of a conversation'. This entertaining kaleidoscope made up of verbal fragments fascinates by virtue of subtle wit and playful ease.

From a biographical point of view, Peter Eötvös’s composition for trumpet and large orchestra is related to his teacher and fellow composer Karlheinz Stockhausen. Eötvös conducted the premiere of Stockhausen’s Donnerstag in 1981 with Stockhausen's son Markus as the trumpet soloist. 22 years later, the premiere of Eötvös’ Jet Stream brought Markus Stockhausen and Peter Eötvös together again. At first glance, Jet Stream appears to be a trumpet concerto, but Eötvös in fact sees the soloist as an embodiment of a fixed point of reference within different flow densities. As the title suggests, the piece is fast, full of energy with lively sounds rushring through the voices of the orchestra. Eötvös describes the soloist as “the eye of the storm”.

Wilfried Hiller Salpinx für Trompete solo und Bläserensemble (1997) 8’ ◆ World Première Donauwörth (D): 10.10.1997 Wolfgang Bauer · Bläser Ensemble Amadé · Klaus Rainer Schöll Wilfried Hiller used the Greek work for trumpet, salpinx, as the title of this 8 minute 'miniature trumpet concerto' which he composed when he was awarded the Werner Egk Prize of the city of Donauwörth in 1997. Despite its shortness, Salpinx is far more than a mere musical aperçu. As in a watercolour by Turner, the solo trumpet and the accompanying wind ensemble paint the picture of a Greek island in the blinding midday sun in this lyrical work with its transparent architecture and glowing tonal colours. The allusion wasn’t entirely coincidental for Hiller had chosen the island of Phournoi as his summer retreat around the time he wrote the work.

Voyage VIII for tuba and ensemble (2006) 15’ ◆ World Première Köln (D): 27.5.2006 Melvyn Poore · Ensemble musikFabrik · Peter Rundel ◆ National Première Tokyo (J): 15.12.2006 Since 1997, Toshio Hosokawa has been working on a series of Voyages. Each work has a different solo instrument accompanied by a chamber orchestra or ensemble. The solo instruments of the nine works which currently make up the cycle are: violin (Voyage I), bassoon (Voyage II), trombone (Voyage III), accordion (Voyage IV), flute (Voyage V), viola (Voyage VI), trumpet (Voyage VII), tuba (Voyage VIII) and guitar (Voyage IX). Hosokawa drew his inspiration for the Voyage cycle as follows: The soloist symbolizes a human being that throws a song to the ensemble/orchestra standing for the universe enclosing the human being, and the universe responds
the song. The song reaches the universe and the reaction returns to the human being again. Hosokawa called the process of these exchanges Voyage, and thought a sense of unity develops between human beings and the universe through the journey.
burlesque and rhythmically tricky last movement which culminates in an exuberant finale – a piece of bravura for soloist and orchestra!
Pietà is the final work in Christian Jost's Requiem trilogy, which he started in 2000. Although written last, Pietà is the first work in the cycle, followed by DiesIrae for trombone and orchestra and then Lux Aeterna for alto saxophone and orchestra. The three works can also be performed separately. Although Pietà isn’t a jazz piece, the subtitle In memoriam Chet Baker hints at the underlying musical idea. The trumpet enters jazz ground again and again with Baker's versatility and elegance. Baker's heartbreaking life-story and tragic death is reflected in a lyrical adagio. This idea extends to the destiny of all mankind in the subsequent works of the trilogy. As a consequence, Pietà is, due to its nature and the melodic part of the solo trumpet, the most intimate part of the cycle.

As the name reveals, the three-movement trumpet concerto Vivaldissimo composed in 2000 for the SouthWest German Chamber Orchestra of Pforzheim and the trumpeter Reinhold Friedrich is an homage to the 'Red Priest' Antonio Vivaldi, or more precisely, to his Double Concerto for two trumpets. The first movement (Allegro) weaves virtuoso solo passages with a minimalist orchestral texture and, with its very fast tempo, gives the soloist and the orchestra room to demonstrate technical brilliance. The following Adagio with its hints of dodecaphony is characterized by a general contemplative mood; the lyrical Siciliana woven into it draws its special effect from the tonal colour of the muted high trumpets. Jörg Widmann ad absurdum Konzertstück für Trompete in B und kleines Orchester (2002) 17’ ◆ World Première Essen (D): 18.1.2006 Sergei Nakariakov · Münchener Kammerorchester · Christoph Poppen ◆ National Première London (UK): 5.10.2007 ad absurdum for trumpet and small orchestra pokes fun at the very idea of the solo concerto, ingeniously parodying it and challenging the notion of a concerto in a playful manner which belies the tragic 'action' of the piece. Widmann manages this by extreme exaggeration: the solo trumpet plays at breakneck speed without pausing for breath (like The Flight of the Bumble-bee), way beyond the normal limits of performance. Coiled ever more tightly, like a steel spring, the piece inevitably spins towards catastrophe: the trumpet gives up with a wailing sound, making way for a barrel-organ, which in its turn racks up the tempo ad absurdum. The spring is coiled too tight and snaps. But it is a breathtaking and entertaining show, which brings audiences to their feet. Reinhold Friedrich Photo: Martin Pudenz

Christian Jost's DiesIrae follows the centuries-long tradition of sacred music, despite it avoiding any kind of liturgical reference. The virtuoso trombone soloist at the world première in 2001, Mike Svoboda, a composer himself, wrote in a letter to Jost: 'A trombone player can count himself lucky when the composer captures the instrument's character. And I am very thankful to you that you managed to do just that in my case with DiesIrae. The work draws a wide arc – in a surprisingly differentiated and rhythmically clearly balanced manner. It is exactly the notes subdivided into extremely
fast notes, yet played in a slow tempo that arouse the "double time" feeling of the jazz in me.' The trombone's alternating between fast repetitions and rhythmically melodic phrases conveys the energy of the work. According to Jost, 'it embodies one of the most powerful human energies'. Whether religious or not, the combination of real things and myth, existing in the belief, forms the inspiration and releases the tension found in DiesIrae. The first movement is an adaptation of the seventh movement of Blood on the Floor (1994-95); the central slow movement was newly composed to complete the work. And the concerto ends on a rousing note with the original Another Set To. The work requires formidable technique and a wide expressive range and incorporates a variety of special ef-
fects such as glissandos (slides), flutter-tonguing and particularly in the slow movement singing while playing. Lindberg has recorded the work twice, with the LPO and the Oslo Philharmonic.

The conductor Ferdinand Leitner (1912-1996) was one of the most active supporters of Carl Orff’s (18951982) musico-dramatic works. As
General Music Director of the Stuttgart State Theatre, he made it one of the most important places of performance of Orff's works, not only conducting the world premières of Oedipus der Tyrann (1959) and Prometheus (1968) but many other first performances of his works. These letters document the intense collaboration between one of the most important composers of the modern age and an internationally renowned conductor.

Co-publishing agreement between Theodorakis' publisher Romanos and Schott Music / Co-Publishing-Vertrag zwischen Theodorakis-Verlag Romanos und Schott Music The Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis, his publisher Romanos and Schott Music have agreed on a comprehensive cooperation in publishing which commences with immediate effect. Romanos, who publish almost all of Mikis Theodorakis’s works have entrusted Schott Music with the production, marketing and distribution for all future works, both on hire and sale. The two publishers,

who have been working together as distribution partners since 2001, will hold joint copyright in all future publications. Schott Music will be the managing publisher for all countries, including Greece, as well as be the main point of contact for orchestras, opera houses, music dealers and general customers. As a result, Schott Music will oversee worldwide the major part of Theodorakis’ music for the stage and concert hall, including the world-famous music for the ballet Zorba the Greek. Mikis Theodorakis, born on the isle of Chios in 1925, is considered to be the most famous and most successful Greek composer with a comprehensive œuvre, including 1,000 songs which have been translated into numerous languages. In the first period of his musical career (1940-53) he wrote songs, oratorios, chamber music, ballets and symphonic works, including his First Symphony. The second, so-called Paris period (1954-59) during which he studied with Olivier Messiaen, comprises chamber music, ballets and symphonic works. The third (1960-1980) is the period of his great political commitment and his turning to popular music, especially to songs. In his fourth period (1981-1988) Theodorakis continued to compose song cycles but at the same time returned to symphonic music (Zorba the Greek). Since 1989, he has devoted himself to the stage, composing his three operas (lyric tragedies): Medea, Elektra and Antigone, as well as his most recent musictheatre work Lysistrata.

RPS Gold Medal awarded to Henri Dutilleux Henri Dutilleux has been honoured with the Royal Philharmonic Society’s (RPS) highest award, the Gold Medal. He was presented with the award on 2 April 2008 during a concert by the Nash Ensemble at London's Wigmore Hall. The RPS’s citation highlights the ‘timeless integrity and utmost precision of his work’. Bearing the image of Beethoven, the Gold Medal was created in 1870 to mark the centenary of Beethoven’s birth. It is recognised as one of the highest honours in the music world and is presented for the most outstanding musicianship, with fewer than 100 presented in the award’s history. Previous medallists include Johannes Brahms, Edward Elgar, Igor Stravinsky, Michael Tippett and György Ligeti. JOHN DUFFY 80 23 June 2008
John Duffy has composed more than 300 works for symphony orchestra, theater, television and film. He and his music have received many awards in recognition of his excellent contributions to music including two Emmys, an ASCAP award for special recognition in film and television music, a New York State Governor’s Art Award and the (New York City) Mayor’s Award of Honor for Arts and Culture. John Duffy grew up in the Bronx, one of fourteen children of Irish immigrant parents. When he was still a young man, composition studies with Aaron Copland, Henry Cowell, Luigi Dallapiccola, Solomon Rosowsky and Herbert Zipper proceeded concurrently with his career and early successes in theater. Duffy’s profound regard for language, its beauties and its powers, suited him ideally for his work in the theater, television and film. He acquired a reputation early on as a first-class interpreter of ideas and emotion, a brilliant orchestrator and a sensitive colleague. Duffy has composed distinguished concert music for a variety of commissions, including the award-winning score for the nine-hour PBS documentary, narrated by Abba Eban, Heritage: Civilization and the Jews. “The New York Times”, “The Wall Street Journal” and the “Chicago Tribune” called the music “haunting, memorable and brilliant.” Of his many arrangements of individual titles from the complete Heritage score, his Heritage Symphonic Dances provide an ideal choice for pops programJohn Duffy ming. A collection of six short Photo: Schott Music Corp. dance themes of differing cultural origins, Heritage Symphonic Dances possesses a celebratory spirit meant to commemorate the notion of freedom and cultural heritage and are now available for hire as individual works.

Schott worldwide representative of Gershwin Hire Library We are delighted to announce that, effective 1 April 2008, Schott Music is the worldwide* representative of the George Gershwin Hire Library. A complete listing of Gershwin’s works can be found on the European American Music website www.eamdllc.com and includes such seminal works of the 20th century as the opera Porgy and Bess (and the symphonic suites and orchestral songs associated with it), the great orchestral favorites such as An American in Paris and Rhapsody in Blue, plus all the beloved popular songs in various orchestral settings. George Gershwin was born in Brooklyn, New York. At the age of 16, he quit school and began his career as a song-plugger on New York’s Tin Pan Alley. Soon after he met the lyricist Irving Caesar and together they would compose a long list of popular songs including Swanee which scored Gershwin his first big national hit. Gershwin’s first collaboration with his brother, lyricist Ira Gershwin, produced the Broadway hit Lady Be Good. It was the beginning of a partnership that would continue for the rest of the composer’s life and would elevate the musical comedy to an American art form. Musicals including Oh Kay! and Funny Face were created alongside more serious symphonic works as Gershwin aimed to make his mark in the concert world. Gershwin’s jazz-influenced Rhapsody in Blue for piano and orchestra premièred in New York’s Aeolian Hall at a concert entitled „An Experiment in Music“ and would prove to be his most popular symphonic work. Among those in attendance at the première were Jascha Heifitz, Fritz Kreisler, Leopold Stokowski, Serge Rachmaninov, and Igor Stravinsky. Gershwin followed this success with his Piano Concerto in F, and the now legendary tone poem An American in Paris. French music, in particular the composers Debussy and Ravel, would prove to have a lasting influence on Gershwin’s classical music. Critics were often at a loss as to where to place Gershwin’s classical music in the standard repertoire, but the music always found favor with the public. He was soon widely acclaimed in the concert world as piano virtuoso, conductor and composer. Back on Broadway, George and Ira Gershwin continued to experiment with novel ideas and their hit show Of Thee I Sing became the first mu-

sical comedy to win the Pulitzer Prize. This feat was soon followed by the première of Gershwin’s folk opera and most ambitious work to date Porgy and Bess. Now recognized as one of the seminal works of American opera, it included such timeless favorites as It Ain’t Necessarily So, I Loves You, Porgy, and Summertime. Shortly after the première of Porgy and Bess, Gershwin moved to Hollywood to score a series of successful films but while there became ill. At the time of his premature death at the age of 38, Gershwin had plans to return to New York and was contemplating work on a new symphony, opera, and ballet. Today he remains one of America’s, indeed one of the world’s, most beloved composers. Please place all hire orders and perusal requests with your local Schott Music company or agent. *excluding Italy
Jascha Heifetz, Fritz Kreisler, Leopold Stokowski, Sergej Rachmani-
now und Igor Strawinsky.

One of the absolute standard works among 20th-century trumpet concertos, Bernd Alois Zimmermann's Nobody knows de trouble I see was premièred in 1954. Having used Latin dance rhythms in the ballet Alagoana and the Violin Concerto, the trumpet concerto was the first of Zimmermann’s works to integrate jazz elements – Big Band sound, swing, shifts of accents and walking bass. Zimmermann demands musicians who can really play jazz – not only the soloist, but a number of the orchestral players, including jazz clarinet, three jazz trumpets, jazz trombone and percussion (three players). As in the Sonate für Viola solo written around the same time, Zimmermann follows the form of the chorale prelude and the practice of anticipatory imitation in his one-movement concerto. The whole piece is oriented towards the citation of the spiritual Nobody knows the trouble I see in the solo trumpet. The text written in the score expresses immeasurable grief, yet at the same time hope of redemption, reflecting Zimmermann's desire for direct expression. In 1960 he wrote: 'The work was written based on the experience of racial fanaticism (which unfortunately still exists today) and uses the blending of three seemingly heterogeneous formal principles' – twelve-note technique, chorale prelude, jazz – 'quasi as a means to show a way of brotherly bonding.' Jahrhunderts zählt Bernd Alois Zimmermanns 1954 uraufgeführtes Nobody knows de trouble I see.
