Director's Note
by Rex Kocherhans
Directing School of Rock has been an absolute joy, largely because of the incredible group of young performers at the heart of this production. Their energy, curiosity, and fearless commitment to the story brought a vitality to the rehearsal room every single day. Watching them grow—not just as actors and musicians, but as collaborators—has been one of the most rewarding parts of this process. They embraced every challenge, supported one another, and reminded all of us why we tell stories in the first place. Their talent is undeniable, but it’s their enthusiasm and spirit that truly make this show sing.
What makes School of Rock so special is how deeply its themes resonate right now. At its core, this is a story about finding your voice in a world that often asks you to conform—to, as the show boldly puts it, “stick it to the man.” In a time when young people face immense pressure to fit into predefined boxes, this show celebrates individuality, creativity, and the courage to take risks. It reminds us that education is not just about rules and results, but about discovery, passion, and the freedom to explore who we are. These messages feel as urgent and relevant today as ever.
Ultimately, this production is a celebration—of music, of mentorship, and of the transformative power of believing in yourself and others. The journey of these students and their unconventional teacher shows us that inspiration can come from unexpected places, and that sometimes breaking the rules is exactly what’s needed to find something extraordinary. It has been an honor to work alongside such a dedicated cast and team, and I hope this show leaves you tapping your feet, laughing loudly, and perhaps even seeing the world a little differently.
