Director's Note Amongst such classic holiday movies as White Christmas, A Christmas Carol and It's A Wonderful Life, we discover how the little sleeper of a movie, A Christmas Story, went from a low-budget fluke to an American tradition. The 1983 movie about nine-year old Ralphie Parker's thwarted desire for a forbidden Christmas present, an official Red Ryder Carbine BB Gun, was a new kind of holiday movie. It acknowledged the commercialism, the disappointments, the hurt feelings, and all around bad luck that, in reality, often define the Christmas season. In other words, what Christmas was like in real families, told with a blast of satire, realism, and sense of nostalgia, all narrated by the real life comedic radio personality and writer, Jean Shepherd, recalled through the eyes of nine-year old Ralphie. Add the fun, witty, and charming music and lyrics of Pasek & Paul (the composing team behind The Greatest Showman, La La Land, Dear Evan Hansen, James and The Giant Peach and more) and A Christmas Story continues to be one of our most beloved, humourous, familiar, cozy, sentimental holiday shows of both screen and stage. Enjoy!
FUN FACTS ABOUT THE MOVIE 1) The director, Bob Clark, auditioned 8,000 kids for the role of Ralphie, beginning with the 12-year old Peter Billingsley, who was already one of the most successful child actors in commercials in NY in the 70's. Clark shied away at first, thinking Peter perfect for the role but too obvious a choice. They auditioned actors in California and in a couple of other countries before they went back to their first choice. Clark later admitted, "He walked in and he had us from the beginning." 2) While the story takes place in the fictional town of Hohman, Indiana, the movie was filmed in two locations: Cleveland, Ohio for the exterior shots, and Toronto, Canada for the interior shots. However, there was no snow in Cleveland that year during production. Therefore, snow had to hauled in from ski resorts hundreds of miles away with additional trucks of snow standing by along with a concoction of falling snow made out of potato flakes, shredded vinyl or firefighter's foam.

3) The narrator, Jean Shepherd, makes a cameo appearance in the movie as a stern older man scolding Ralphie for breaking into the long line to see Santa at Higbees Department Store. 4) To get Flick's tongue to stick to the pole they built a plastic pole and drilled a tiny hole in it that sucked in air so Flick's tongue would actually stick. 5) Director Bob Clark didn't let the Ralphie and Randy actors see the famous leg lamp until the camera was rolling and it was lifted from the Fragile (Fra-gee-lay) crate. Ralphie's raptured reaction as his hand glides up the lamp’s fishnet leg was totally real. 6) Located at 3159 W 11th Street in Cleveland, Ohio, you can visit the actual Parker house from A Christmas Story. Superfan Brain Jones bought the house for $150,000 on eBay in 2005. He spent $350,000 to restore the inside and the outside to look exactly how it did in the movie. In 2006, A Christmas Story house opened as a museum with costumes and props actually used during production. 7) The weird goggles kid in line to see Santa at Higbee's Department Store wasn't an actor. He was just an extra on set. Bob Clark thought he was really weird so he put the kid in the movie. 8) In 2009, the musical based on A Christmas Story, with music and lyrics by noted songwriting team Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, premiered at Kansas City Repertory Theater, Missouri, eventually making its way to Broadway in 2012. With regards to the movie, Peter Billingsley. who played Ralphie said, “I don’t know if it was the first, but it certainly was one of the best embodiments of a real family. There’s tension, there’s some anxiety in the household, there’s very much a sibling battle, there’s a mother trying to hold things together and hold her place, there’s probably financial trouble, the father’s do-it-yourself aspect of the household: nothing is sourced out—he’s going to handle it! Yet through all that, there’s a genuine sense of love and protection within the house, and yet the words ‘I love you’ are never uttered in the movie. Still [one of the last shots] is just that simple gesture touching the mother for the first time in the movie. And in that moment it says all you need to know about that relationship...it tells you how that guy loves her, he’s there for her, and that’s it.” Billingsley also emphasizes that the one person who comes through with the Red Ryder BB gun is the father, the one person Ralphie never asked! DEBORAH BOWMAN
PENNY BUFFINGTON
(Costume Designer) Debbie started singing and acting when she was four years old and has enjoyed the stage ever since. You've seen her as Mother Bailey in It’s A Wonderful Life: The Musical, Sister Amnesia in Nuncrackers, in Sister Act and singing in SCERA’s Night of Broadway concert. Debbie feels blessed to have a high school hobby turn into her dream job these last 17 years working at the SCERA Costume Shop. She has costume designed many shows, with some favorites being Oklahoma, The SpongeBob Musical, Catch Me If You Can, The Drowsy Chaperone, Matilda The Musical, The Wizard of Oz, Mary Poppins, The Little Mermaid, Hairspray, The Scarlet Pimpernel and Newsies. But her favorite role to play is grandma to five beautiful grandbabies, mom to two great kids (and their spouses), and wife to her extremely supportive husband John!
(Nancy) Penny LIVES for musical theater and was so excited to be cast in A Christmas Story for her second year. She also had the opportunity to perform in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and Beauty and the Beast as well as the roles of Johnny Appleseed in Johnny Appleseed and ManyPeny in The Emperor’s New Clothes with the Missoula Children’s Theatre. Penny attends COPA and was part of their MDT Premier Company and their Petite Dance Company last year and their MDT Moxie Company this year. Penny is in the 7th grade in the Spanish Immersion program and is on the high honor roll. This is the fourth time she has shared the stage with her dad and the second time she has shared it with her little brother.
ELIJAH COLLEDGE
(Flick) Elijah is excited to be making his debut at SCERA in A Christmas Story. He loves tap dancing and is excited to be able to tap in this show. His previous credits include Jack Kelly in Newsies Jr as well as numerous Utah COPA showcases. He’s a 7th grader at Timberline Middle School and is excited to be learning French and stage design. “Thanks to my family and friends for encouraging and supporting me!”
MARK BUFFINGTON
(The Old Man) Mark is super excited to be back at SCERA for the third time in the role of the Old Man, especially since this year he gets to share the stage with his daughter Penny and son Jeb. You may have seen him in other SCERA productions including Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (Adam), The Sound of Music (Capt. Von Trapp), Hairspray (Corny Collins) and multiple ensemble roles (Wizard of Oz, Tarzan, and more.) Mark is a full time Officer with the Utah Army National Guard. He wants to thank his wife Stephanie and 5 kids for letting him go and play during a very busy time of year.
JEANNA CUNNINGHAM
(Choreographer) Jeanna is excited to be back working with this dream team on A Christmas Story. Jeanna was raised in Lehi and was Miss Lehi 2000. She directed the Miss Lehi's Outstanding Teen Pageant for 11 years. She has danced since the age of 3 12

and has been instructing dance and doing choreography for musicals for the past 23 years. She is formally trained in Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Tumbling, Hip Hop, Modern and Social Dance. She holds a Masters Degree in Mental Health Counseling and is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor. She works as an Adolescent Therapist in an inpatient psychiatric hospital. She is currently finishing her PhD in Psychology. Jeanna serves on the Board of Directors for the Lehi Arts Council, and actively volunteers for city events when she can. She enjoys going to Orangetheory Fitness, hiking, fishing and traveling. Jeanna resides in Lehi with her 8 year old daughter Riley.

ED EYESTONE
(Jean Shepherd / Narrator) A Christmas Story is becoming a Christmas tradition as Ed once again takes on the semibiographical role of Jean Shepherd. Ed is the head track and field and men's cross country coach at BYU. He has done color commentary for ESPN, Fox Sports and NBC, including the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and the Chicago, New York and Boston marathons. He thanks his wife Lynn and daughters for their support and getting him back into theater after a 30-year break. Thanks also to his granddaughters, whose favorite Christmas song is "Ralphie to the Rescue!"
CHASE ELISON
(Lighting & Sound Designer) Chase has been involved in theatre since he was 11 in SCERA’s Oliver. At age 15, he began working at the Lehi Arts Center, where he has run and designed countless productions in lighting and audio. Chase currently serves as SCERA’s Sound and Lighting Manager, and has designed lighting for many of SCERA’s Theatre for Young Audiences productions, most recently for The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley. “I dedicate my work to my grandparents Jerry & Barbara. They introduced me to theatre and music at a young age. My grandma taught me piano for many years, and I had the honor of working with my grandpa for several productions here at SCERA. Love and miss you guys, ‘Ya done good!’”
MITT HARRIS
(Ralphie Parker) Mitt is a 7th grader at Timberline Middle School. He has been training at Utah COPA for the last 3 years. Mitt has been in many shows since the age of 4, but his favorite must be HCTO’s Oliver! He is excited to be back at SCERA for the opportunity to portray the role of Ralphie! Mitt would like to thank all of his directors and family for always being there and supporting him in his dreams.
KURT ELISON
(Director) Kurt has been on the stage since he was just a little kid, and is so excited to be back directing this show with another great cast and crew. Back in the 80s when A Christmas Story came out, Kurt would sit in the theater all day long watching the movie over and over. Since the musical came out, it has been one of his favorites. This past year, Kurt has been busy building sets at the Lehi Arts Center. SCERA holds a special place in his heart, as Kurt has played many roles at SCERA and has

(Grover Dill) Capri is a 4th grader who loves singing, dancing, tumbling, reading, and drawing. She was last seen on the SCERA stage in Mary Poppins, and is excited to be in another show with her mom! Other favorite credits include Gretl in The Sound of Music at HCTO, and Frozen Kids 15

(Esther Jane) ) Abby is fourteen and a 9th grader at Lehi Jr. High. She has performed in many shows, with favorites including Newsies at Lehi Arts as a Bowery Beauty/ Newsie and SCERA’s 2022 A Christmas Story as a Classroom Kid. Abby trains with COPA and is in their MDT Principal Company. In addition to theatre, Abby loves to hang out with her friends, watch movies, and travel. Abby is so happy for the opportunity to do this show a second time and play Esther Jane.
(Mother / Music Director) Emily is thrilled to be back at SCERA as part of the cast and also the production team, and is excited to be doing this show with her daughter Capri! Favorite performing credits include Mrs. Bucket in Willy Wonka and Miss Andrew in Mary Poppins (SCERA), Narrator in Joseph...Dreamcoat (Alpine Community Theater), Mother Superior in Sister Act (Draper Arts), The Sound of Music and The Music Man (HCTO), School of Rock and A Christmas Carol (HCT). Emily has a Bachelor’s of Music in Choral Music Education from BYU and stays busy as a music director. Some recent music direction credits include Seussical (American Fork High School), Bright Star (Lehi Arts), Les Miserables (BYU’s Broadway Bootcamp), and Newsies Jr. (HCTO). “Thank you to the amazing production team and cast for making this a wonderful experience! ELIAS KAHLER
(Scut Farkus) Elias is extremely excited to be joining the cast for his second performance of A Christmas Story at SCERA. Elias is in the 8th grade at Lakeridge Junior High. He is a member of the HOPE Squad and his favorite subjects are Peer Tutoring and Engineering. While attending Noah Webster Academy, Elias performed in Annie Jr. as Rooster Hannigan for the 6th grade school play, and discovered his love for theatre. He enjoys mountain biking and is a participant of the Orem Youth Cycling Association (OYCA) team. He also enjoys skiing, performing magic, camping, and has been a piano student for 6 years. Elias would like to thank Lynn Eyestone for selflessly sharing her skills to help him prepare for his audition. He is also very grateful for the support of his family, director Kurt Elison for giving him this opportunity, and all who have helped him improve his skills.
ZIPPY HELLEWELL
(Scenic Designer / Scene Shop Manager) Zippy graduated from UVU with an AA in Theatre Arts. He has been doing theater since 5th grade when he was in his elementary school's production of Guys and Dolls Jr. and has loved it ever since. Zippy started off acting, but he also found his love for backstage along the way. He started working in technical theater in junior high and high school, as well as some classes at UVU. He’s spent the past few years at SCERA working on sets and backstage, and recently designed the set for The Play That Goes Wrong, Cinderella: The Tale of the 16

BROOKLYN LOWDER
(Miss Shields) Marisol is thrilled to be a part of her second musical this year, and excited to play such an incredible character. Marisol has trained in voice, dance, and theatre throughout her whole life. She is honored to be able to do what she loves. When not preparing for a show, she is a full-time mom that takes pride in being involved in her kid’s lives and managing her home. Marisol loves running and feeding people. She would like to thank her husband James and children Alison, Craig, and Gaby. They mean the world to her and she couldn’t do any of this without their support.
(Mary Beth) Brooklyn is honored to perform at SCERA for her first time. Brooklyn has been singing as long as she has been able to talk, and has been studying Voice, Dance and Theatre with Utah COPA since the age of six. She enjoys performing local plays as well as musical dance theater with the COPA Moxie company. Brooklyn also plays the flute and loves to explore the outdoors. She thanks her awesome teachers at COPA for her years of training and all of her family for supporting her.
DANIEL MANIVANH
(Dance Captain) Daniel's dance background is in hip hop. His interest in dance started after he watched the movie You Got Served. He then got started in musical theatre about six years ago when a friend reached out about a production looking for men who can dance. From there, he was hooked and continued to audition for various shows. Some of his favorite shows have been The Spongebob Musical (SCERA), Newsies (Herriman Arts Council), and Elf: The Musical (Lehi Arts Council). Daniel also teaches hip hop at SCERA, and dances as part of Legacies, a multi-cultural performing dance group based in Orem.
TY POULSON
(Schwartz) Ty is excited to make his SCERA debut! He is loving every minute of this classic Christmas favorite. Ty is in fifth grade, plays the violin, and enjoys singing and dancing. He has played Little Johnny in Johnny Appleseed and appeared in James and the Giant Peach. He loves being outside and hanging out with his friends. Ty trains in musical dance theater at Utah COPA and wants to thank them for their dedication in helping him learn and grow as a performer. He would also like to thank the directing team at SCERA for this amazing opportunity!
CHRISTY NORTON
JACKSON SEAVER
(Props Designer) Christy grew up in Orem and remembers going to SCERA as a child. She taught dance for 20+ years and was the Youth Dance director at SCERA for four years. Christy started designing props for SCERA in 2014. Her first production was The Cat in the Hat and since that time she has designed more than 80 productions. Christy loves the unique creative challenge of designing props to help tell the story! Special thanks to her husband Ben and three children and to her SCERA family for believing in me and supporting me.
(Randy Parker) Jackson is so excited to be playing his dream role this year in A Christmas Story! He was lucky enough to be Grover Dill last year and couldn’t pass up the opportunity to audition this year. He got his start in theater in SCERA’s Spamalot a few years ago. He is in 3rd grade and loves math. He is so thankful to his family for helping him prepare for this role and helping him learn his lines.

(Production Stage Manager/Costume Designer) Kelsey is excited to be back stage managing this show this year. During the day she is grateful for the opportunity to design and work in the SCERA Costume Shop for the last fifteen years. Some favorite shows she has designed are Elf The Musical, The Music Man, Willy Wonka, My Fair Lady, Seussical, Shrek, Aida, Beauty and the Beast, Mary Poppins, Singing in the Rain and many others too numerous to mention. "Thanks to my family for their support, and my husband and three great kids that put up with late nights!"
(Music Director) Kelsey holds a bachelor of music in vocal performance from UVU. She has performed throughout the United States, as well as in the UK and Spain. In her career, she has directed, music directed, stage managed, and taught voice lessons; though her most fulfilling role is that of wife and mother. Favorite directing/music directing credits include: Mary Poppins, The SpongeBob Musical (SCERA Shell); The Addams Family (SCERA, CYT Houston); Sleepy Hollow: The Musical and Rapunzel: A Very Hairy Fairy Tale (TYA, SCERA).
