Early in the season, especially in November, is when there are more opportunities to embark on a helicopter^ excursion to Snow Hill Island in the Weddell Sea. Home to thousands of breeding pairs of the majestic Emperor penguin, this rarely visited location reveals one of Antarctica’s most extraordinary wildlife spectacles. After landing, take a short hike through the snow to a viewpoint overlooking the breeding ground, where fluffy chicks and their parents huddle together. The Discovery Team’s ornithologist will join you to offer deep insights into the behavior and ecology of the penguins.

Antarctica looks especially pristine in spring, with fresh snow and an excess of sea ice. Male fur and elephant seals build harems on South Georgia, while on the Antarctic Peninsula, penguins begin courting, building nests and incubating their eggs. By mid to late December, chicks are hatching while minke and humpback whales arrive for feeding under almost 24-hour daylight. In South Georgia, King penguins balance eggs on their feet and albatrosses reveal their young. This is also an ideal time to extend your journey into the Chilean Fjords, where temperate rainforests, cascading glaciers and rich marine life will enrich your expedition experience.

As the ice retreats, penguin rookeries come alive alongside hungry leopard seals and skuas in flight. Curious penguin chicks often approach human visitors, and newborn crabeater and Weddell seal pups play on ice floes.

At the start of autumn, the weather is still mild compared to the winter ahead, but there’s certainly a change in the air. Patches of sea form before your eyes, chasing Gentoo penguins into the Southern Ocean. Fur seal pups cavort in swim schools off South Georgia, while King penguins pack the beaches.

In South Georgia, juvenile seals and penguin chicks interact in temperatures above 41°F, the warmest of the year. Magellanic penguin chicks emerge from burrows on the Falklands, while King penguin chicks are nurtured in large crèches. This is also when there’s a rare window to explore East Antarctica and the Ross Sea, where you can witness the stark McMurdo Dry Valleys.

This is a prime time for whale watchers. You may spot large whale pods feeding on krill as they prepare to migrate north. Closer to shore, penguin chicks learn to swim in shallow waters as leopard seals look on.
