t’s time once again to get back into the Sarasota swing! We are excited to present our annual Arts & Culture issue with a complete guide to the upcoming season of performing arts, exhibitions, festivals, and fairs.
And I know you’re ready to roll because I’ve seen many friends pop home from summer travels a bit earlier than usual. So, circle your favorites, reserve your seats, and get ready for a season that looks extra sensational!
In this issue is a fascinating interview with Ringling Museum Board of Trustees Chair Warren Colbert and his wife, fashion icon Marie Colbert. The Colberts have a passion for art and have amassed an impressive collection of works from great African American artists. We are fortunate indeed to have this wonderful couple living here and supporting our community.
Also in this issue, meet “A Girl Far from Normal”—Normal, Indiana that is! The “Girl” is gifted writer, actor and Sarasota resident Robyn Bishop-Marin who just finished her very successful one-woman Off-Broadway play of the same name. She hopes to bring this story about her life experiences to Sarasota audiences and we hope she gets that opportunity soon!
Our monthly “Around Town” interview is with the talented and dynamic Jeffery Kin, former Managing Artistic Director at The Players Centre, and now the major influence behind Sarasota Rising—an exciting new arts and cultural organization focused on enhancing our area as a year-long arts destination through exciting events. There’s a lot of buzz about Sarasota Rising and Jeffery needs volunteers. Be sure to read about it here and learn ways to help.
In the spotlight this month is Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe and its leader Nate Jacobs. For more than 25 years, the Troupe has dazzled patrons of all ages and backgrounds. Jacobs has polished this theater year after year, and it is now an absolute brilliant gem. Be sure to get your seats early for Troupe performances because I guarantee you will have a great time.
Sarasota Scene will once again sponsor two operas for Sarasota Opera— Carmen and Lucia di Lammermoor. Donizetti’s Lucia is an opera set in 17th century Scotland. If you are not aware, Sarasota has a rich Scottish history. An opera with a Scottish connection always makes for a very fun evening at the opera.
Sarasota Opera invites its audience to dress in Scottish garb on opening night of its second opera each season—kilts for men and the traditional earasaid for women or a tartan sash with a Luckenbooth broach. Last season, over thirty men dressed in kilts including Sarasota Opera’s very own General Director Richard Russell.

homeowners – discolored, pitted and tarnished exterior door hardware caused by our harsh salt-rich air.
We eventually learn that the tease of “lifetime brass” really means a lifetime of maintenance and repair. There is a practical solution to this common problem – Bronze or Stainless Steel.
Both materials offer excellent salt tolerance and oxidation/corrosion resistance with a minimum of maintenance. A variety of styles and finishes provide a perfect match to existing color schemes including rich patinas of classic bronze, contemporary polished or matte nickel, and black.
Beautifully crafted bathroom and kitchen fixtures, fittings and accessories from leading designers. Masterpieces of functionality and style showcased in an astounding showroom. Visit our showroom or call to arrange an appointment.
TRENDS
I will be digging out my kilt as I am sure many opera stalwarts will do the same. Bill, Gary, and the rest. I am calling out all of those who said they would wear a kilt next year—well it is next year— so Bill, Andrew, Harry, Ed, David, Les, Larry, Robert, Arthur, Bud, Stephen, and rest of you, as well as Elizabeth, Audrey, Claudia, Dawn, and Betty and any other women who want to join the tradition, be sure to get your Scottish on for opening night of Lucia!
So, what about Sarasota and its Scottish history? The Scots Colony, as it was known in 1885, was a development project in Florida that offered the emigration-oriented Scottish surveyed and parceled land at very affordable prices. They hoped to capitalize on an established infrastructure of farming, fishing, and a booming economic situation. They arrived in December of that year and found the settlement was rough and lacked the promised homes, stores, and streets. There was also a challenging natural environment. Few remained but those that did included the Browning Family, the Gillespie Family, and the Owen Burns Family. These families and a few others invested what they had in construction, finance and fishing and established the foundation for Sarasota.
We will once again pay homage to this rich Scottish history and celebrate their achievements on opening night of Sarasota Opera’s second opera of the season—Lucia di Lammermoor. Opening night is February 24, 2024. Be sure to get your tickets early to Lucia and don your best tartan plaid for an evening you’ll not soon forget!
Next, we have a sensational cover illustration of Lucia created by Sarasota Scene’s Executive Creative Director Darcy Kelly-Laviolette. Darcy is a Ringling College graduate who is not only a wonderful graphic designer, but she is a fabulous illustrator. She captured Lucia at the height of her madness, holding her blood-stained knife. Darcy tells us in this issue all about the fun she had doing the illustrations this season for each opera in Sarasota Opera’s new season.
I love our arts and culture scene. I can’t wait and I am sure many of you are with me. So, get ready…get set…and let the shows begin!

As many may know, we recently lost a community notable, Richard Schineller. While many mourn this passing, none will feel the blow more than Richard’s three kids, Erin, Richard, and Amy. We’ve asked them to share a few thoughts in tribute to their father.
Writing this as I wrap up my first professional panel feels incredibly apropos, as my Dad was my biggest supporter in all endeavors. He was not just a father, friend, and coworker, but he was a dreamer. Our Dad was like Icarus, always with great plans that curated possible doubts from others, but where Icarus fell Dad kept flying. His projects were an amalgamation of innovation and passion, and often brought in multiple members of the community (and millions of impressions). His legacy of love and support lives on in my siblings and I, as well as each person he crossed paths with. — Erin Schineller Ault
Dad had a way of connecting people and bringing out the best in them. His charisma, ingenuity and his passion for his family, friends and community is something we will all miss. He always worked towards improving the lives of those around him, no matter how small the matter, from something as small as taking in a new dress shirt to make it fit better on me, to producing full music videos for environmental conservation movements. Our father is one we always have, and will continue to look up to, and although he isn’t physically here with us anymore, his lessons will live on and guide us for the rest of our lives. — Richard
Schineller IIIHe was the visionary any child, friend, family, and coworker dreamed of. When you think of Rich Schineller, there is never one story that accumulates to all the selcouth things he endeavored upon. Always the man behind the camera, but a main character to us all. Without Rich, there is a lacuna not only in the city of Sarasota, but in the hearts of all those he loved, and those who loved him. His light, love and spirit are my raison d’être. I will never seek a Nepenthe for Rich Schineller, just hope to see the world through his elysian eyes. — Amy Schineller

In the relatively short time Michelle and Jonathan Mitchell have called Sarasota their new home, they have contributed significantly to this community both through their philanthropic efforts as well as their professional endeavors.
The Mitchells, who operate a family office in downtown Sarasota from which they manage a portfolio of primarily private equities and real estate, moved to Sarasota from Southern California seven years ago. Those who are acquainted with this power couple know full well their philanthropic and professional reach goes far beyond our shores. Globally they have made an impact as well.
Jonathan shared the couple’s driving factor in escaping California and moving to Sarasota: “It was to enjoy sunshine, water, quality healthcare, great entertainment and, most of all, friendly people with a Midwestern way of life.” Sarasota’s vibrant arts and culture scene remind Michelle of her hometown of Carmel, California. Once here, the Mitchells hit the ground running in all aspects of their lives, especially philanthropy.
The Mitchell’s focus their philanthropy on education, medical research, and Jewish causes centered around Israel.
“When it comes to education, our emphasis is Ringling College of Art and Design’s creative, driven, intelligent, talented, and gifted students,” he adds. “Ringling College is our community’s answer to preparing future leaders in the world of innovative, revolutionary thinking. What better place can there be to invest our financial assets?”
Jonathan serves as a trustee at Ringling College, contributing both his time and capital resources. He shared that from the first day they made Sarasota their home, they directed their philanthropic efforts toward the college.
In evaluating whether a particular organization meets their criteria for philanthropy, the Mitchells first examine its relevance to the objectives and purpose of their foundation, the Edward D. and Anna Mitchell Family Foundation.
“Education—particularly education of those with the most likely chance for success—is high on our priority list,” notes Jonathan. “Ringling College seeks enrollment of serious students with creative talent and delivers on cultivating inherent unique abilities. Its proven record of accomplishment speaks for itself.”
Jonathan says he and Michelle are most impressed by the College’s ability to select among applicants for enrollment
who exhibit the combination of natural ability and a fervent desire to learn, together with unrestricted inventiveness.
“Then to take those qualities, materially expand on them, and transform them into a life of creativity and productivity, economically and otherwise, these are the elements that give rise to advancement.”
Philanthropy helps to build a stronger foundation for any organization. Speaking of what he envisions for Ringling College going forward as it builds upon its current resources and endeavors, Jonathan says, “Fortunately, Ringling’s achievements are quantifiable. It is a proven fact that their graduates are among the most productive people in the workforce. The investment we make in these students produces a verifiable return on investment in which every donor can take enormous pride.”
Philanthropy is in the genes for both Michelle and Jonathan.
In Jonathan’s family, it dates to as far back as he can remember, starting with when his grandfather Edward came with his parents to the United States from Eastern Europe in the late 1800s.
Though poor, Edward’s mother set aside money from earnings Edward and his siblings made selling shoelaces and day-old newspapers on New York’s Lower East
Side to give to those even less fortunate. “My family, my great-grandparents, grandparents, and parents, were all considerably charitable, both with energy and financial support,” says Jonathan.
So much so that it would lead to the establishment of the Edward D. and Anna Mitchell Family Foundation, named for Jonathan’s grandparents who attained success on their own through the establishment of the Beneficial Standard Life Insurance Company.
Jonathan has an extensive background in finance and real estate, having overseen his family office since 1999. He has served as chief executive officer or general partner of six principal entities, engaged in publicly traded stock and bond investments, foreign currency transactions, private equities, lending, and real estate development and management.
Among his many philanthropic endeavors, Jonathan serves on the board of the Sarasota Memorial Healthcare Foundation and on the board of trustees of Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium. He is a lifetime trustee of the Technion, Israeli Institute of Technology, and a trustee of The Washington Institute think tank.
Jonathan’s past affiliations include the UCLA Foundation, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, and the American-Israel Public Affairs Committee, among many other organizations both domestically and outside of the United States.
As Jonathan has given to others, much has been given to him. He is the recipient of numerous awards from major philanthropic institutions, including the Anti-Defamation League, Chamah, the Orthodox Union’s Institute for Public Affairs, United Way of Los Angeles, and the Zionist Organization of America. His charitable work was well discussed in the Melman/Raviv book, titled Friends in Deed: Inside the US-Israel Alliance.
Michelle, who speaks English, Spanish, Japanese, and Arabic is a former financial analyst, U.S. foreign service officer, and deputy director for the Middle East Partnership Initiative, which awards grants to support political, educational, economic, and women’s reform in developing countries. Since 2007, she has served as chief financial officer for the family company.
She also has worked as a Kuwait/Bahrain Desk Officer for the U.S. Department of State in Washington D.C. as well as serving as a Watch Officer. Prior to that, Michelle served as point person for telecommunications, tourism, civil aviation, law enforcement, and women’s issues at our embassy in Santo Domingo for the U.S. Department of State. Previous positions include working as a senior financial analyst and manager of the Asia-Pacific and Middle East departments for Kagan World Media.
Michelle’s experience also included working as an assistant editor in charge of report production for Environmental Quality International in Cairo,
Egypt, where she researched, compiled, edited, and consulted on environmental impact reports prepared for United Nations agencies and USAID.
Michelle earned a bachelor’s degree in political science with honors from the University of California, Santa Barbara. She went on to earn an MBA with Distinction from the Monterey (California) Institute of International Studies and was a graduate of a ninemonth intensive economic and commercial studies program at the Foreign Service Institute in Washington, D.C. She is a lifetime member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and MENSA organizations.
“I feel we have been so fortunate in the families we have had, the places we have lived, and the opportunities we have had,” says Michelle. “The best way to show appreciation is to share and pay it forward with others in this outstanding community we call home. We all lift each other up, and Sarasota is a great match for us in this respect.”
And we are fortunate indeed to benefit as a community from the kindness, care, and generosity of this incredible couple. It is a match for which we will be forever grateful.
Publisher’s Note: We at Sarasota Scene can attest to the fact that Ringling College of Art and Design graduates are, to quote Jonathan Mitchell, “...among the most productive in the workforce.” Our very own Creative Director, Darcy Kelly-Laviolette, came to work at the magazine right after she graduated from Ringling College. We were very wise to immediately hire her!
“The best way to show appreciation is to share and pay it forward with others in this outstanding community we call home. We all lift each other up, and Sarasota is a great match for us in this respect.”

You may know the dashing, innovative, and talented Jeffery Kin for his stage acting, or perhaps for his awardwinning writing and direction of local theater productions, especially during his time as Managing Artistic Director at The Players Theatre for Performing Arts. These days Kin is spearheading Sarasota Rising—an exciting new arts and cultural organization whose mission is to enhance our area as a year-long arts destination through exciting events that build community pride, elevate artistic expression, and boost economic prosperity. Jeffery tells us all about this and more as we connect with him “Around Town”!
As a long-time Sarasotan involved in our local arts and culture scene, you have a deep love and respect for this community. Tell us about your early days and what brought you to Sarasota. I was mysteriously born a theater lover in the middle of nowhere Ohio. However, unlike most dreamers, no one ever said to me, “NO! YOU CAN’T DO THAT!”. I received loving family support, and most importantly, teachers who saw my early passion and nurtured those early thoughts of the stage. A great college experience was followed by an amazing New York City experience, but I never felt like I was home there. Arriving in Sarasota to retire from the arts was the best thing I ever
failed at doing! Slowly, Sarasota allowed me the space and freedom to not only just act, but also direct, design, write and teach. Our region is devoted to the arts, so I’m devoted to our region.
As the former Producing Artistic Director of The Players Performing Arts Centre, how did your tenure there shape you into who you are today? My time with The Players is marked with both tremendous highs and tremendous lows. Understanding how to navigate both of those feelings was a lesson we all must learn. However, just being an arts lover doesn’t make you a great arts employee. So, I am very proud of the life-long relationships that came out of that time, the challenges that we overcame, and the love that still comes to me from that role I played. You can’t lead without vision, common sense, and a passion for what you’re doing. I did that then and I believe I’m able to do that now!
You are involved in Sarasota Rising—an organization founded to “unify the region’s arts and cultural assets into a powerful beacon.” How did this organization come to be? Often people have great ideas and may not know how to make the idea become a reality. The initial idea for an arts festival in our region is decades old. But it takes a true
lover of the idea to verbalize and put the wheels in motion. That came from Dr. Mark Kauffman, who understands the value of our region and knows we have more to give than meets the eye. He gracefully introduced me to the basic concept and then stepped aside for me to make it happen. Early support from our Downtown Improvement District and a special angel donor was enough to get the wheels in motion. Now, the idea has a life, and we are growing daily to create this annual celebration of who we are on this Cultural Coast!
Where do things stand now with Sarasota Rising? We are toddlers right now, just about two years old! And we are doing what every young organization does and that it to strategically plan and surround ourselves with amazing energies that can help get us to our first main even in November of 2024. There is nothing that has the potential to elevate our region like this one singular annual event. We are digging deep, putting in the hours, and doing the hard work needed to create something for our entire region to be proud of for generations. I am reminded daily that we are all stronger together, and I am buoyed by the mantra: “Together we are stronger!”.
How will Sarasota Rising assist and enhance local arts and cultural organizations? We are built to support and elevate who and what we are as an arts community. I have spent a great deal of time meeting, talking, and having tea with as many of the area organizations that will have me. I
feel that by working together, we can help in branding our region as the Culture Coast. That is a part of our mission. If our effort is heralded for its desire to elevate both the large and the small, the professional and non-professional, that is literally music to our ears. We want ALL area businesses to have more customers, more patrons, more donors, and more support for the important work that is being done every single day. Our region deserves a celebration of who we are!
There are plans for a Sarasota Rising 2024 festival to be called Living Arts Festival. Tell us more about it. Imagine our very own Selby 5 Points Park that is set up with a stage and tents all celebrating our incredible area artists. That for one week each year, our arts groups seem a bit more accessible to area students and families, and tourists! We are simply placing the theater, visual arts, and fine arts in a prominent place that a child could have their first arts experience. This one event could change their life forever. We are taking the time to help take down some walls, and helping area residents and tourists alike see that the arts are all around us. The arts help build a strong community, so we are engaging, educating, and enlightening our city and our neighbors to become friends through Living Arts Festival.
If our readers would like to get involved with Sarasota Rising as a donor or volunteer, please tell them how to do that. To say that this one initiative will take a village is an understatement. We need all kinds of help and

What other interests or hobbies do you have? What is this word hobby? Truthfully, I am constantly amazed at how much my farm upbringing still plays such a role in my life. I need my fresh air; I need to prune; and I need to water and fertilize the plants in my yard. I need that connection to the soil to this day. I’m not so sure people would even recognize me when I’m knee deep in mulch, sweating and toiling on my many projects. I guess in many ways, I’m still a farm kid. I still like to get dirty.
What are some of your favorite restaurants or places to go in Sarasota? If I know a business is supporting a cause or has a strong focus on helping our community, I’m there! This is money well spent. So, places like Rise & Nye’s, or Drunken Poet Café are personal favorites. Knowing a business has ties with and gives back to their community makes a big difference to me.
What was your favorite vacation and why? From an early age, whenever I saw pictures of Machu Picchu, I just knew I had to be standing there some day. For some reason, I’ve always felt I needed to be there. My trip there last year with my partner, and my sister and her friend, was the journey of a lifetime. I will go back, yes, for some of the sites, but it was really the culture of hospitality and respect that helped me fall in love with more than the sites and the people keeping those sites alive.
Recognized as one of the premier professional theatres in America, and the largest in the southeast, Asolo Repertory Theatre delivers high caliber productions that rival the best of Broadway, created right here in Sarasota. The 2023-24 season is no exception, with a season that includes two must-see musicals and four plays in true rotating repertory style.
The 65th season kicks off in November with the Tony Award®winning, toe-tapping, romantic comedy, CRAZY FOR YOU Featuring iconic Gershwin songs such as “Someone to Watch Over Me,” “I Got Rhythm,” and “Embraceable You,” this familyfriendly musical is full of comic high jinks and spectacular dance numbers.
The winter repertory season includes four dynamic and thoughtprovoking plays. Rep opens with an explosive drama, INHERIT THE WIND. Inspired by the most important trial of the 20th Century, the play was a smash hit on Broadway and later became an Oscar®nominated film. Peter Rothstein will direct this battle of wits and wills that will leave pulses racing. Fresh off its critically acclaimed world premiere runs at the Alley Theatre and Guthrie Theatre, BORN WITH TEETH will plunge audiences into palace intrigue, high stake spy craft and cutthroat betrayals. Directed by Rob Melrose, this play offers an inside, alternative look at the tumultuous relationship between William Shakespeare and Christopher Marlowe. The third play in the repertory season is from the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Lynn Nottage. INTIMATE APPAREL is the searing, sensual and powerful story of a Black seamstress’ forbidden romance in 1905 New York. Directed by Austene Van, audiences will be entranced by this heart wrenching modern classic about the power of human connection. Wrapping up the four-show repertory season is a classic by Frederick Knott that has been reimaged by one of today’s greatest playwrights, Jeffrey Hatcher. DIAL ‘M’ FOR MURDER will take audiences to the edge of their seat as Asolo Rep Associate Artistic Director Céline Rosenthal directs this stylish and intoxicating thriller.
The spring brings the Theater Latté Da world premiere production of TWELVE ANGRY MEN: A NEW MUSICAL. Propelled by a jazzinfused score, one of America’s greatest dramas reaches new heights in this searing story of a lone juror who demands that our legal system lives up to our ideals. This groundbreaking new musical is directed by Asolo Rep’s new Producing Artistic Director Peter Rothstein, who has played an integral role in bringing this new work to the stage. Join us as we celebrate the magic of live theatre, the power of communal storytelling and its unique ability to inspire, provoke and delight.
If you ask Warren R. Colbert, Sr., Chair of the Board of Trustees at the John & Mable Ringling Museum of Art, if he ever planned on being as involved as he is at the museum, he’ll tell you he never planned to be. In fact, he never planned on living in Sarasota either.
Warren recently retired as a Senior Vice President-Wealth Management at UBS Financial Services, and a former Wall Street financial advisor. His wife, Marie Johnson Colbert, is a well-known fashion icon and trendsetter. She retired from teaching at New York’s premier design school, and top design school in the world, the Parsons School of Design.
But technically, they aren’t really retired.
“When people ask what we’re retiring from, I tell them I retired from finance,” Warren said. “But I have an interest in the arts. That’s my life and my passion.”
As residents of Sarasota with a summer retreat in New Rochelle, NY, the Colberts have an active and busy life, having relationships with several art museums in Florida and New York City.
When asked about what led him to his current position at the Ringling Museum, Warren shares fascinating stories about his journey from first discovering fine arts museums to starting his collection of great works from African American artists. He’s helped to both build and sustain a massive amount of interest in these wildly gifted artists whose works were previously marginalized… until just recently.
Listening to him speak, his passion and thrill comes across in his voice. He’s right where he needs to be. It’s very clear that art is not only his life but also his legacy.
“He loves it,” Marie says, laughing.
During their travels across Europe this summer, I spoke with this interesting couple as they sat on an ornate antique couch in the Hotel Imperial, an 1865 palace residence in Vienna, and talked about how it all began.
When Warren was in graduate school in the 1970s, he worked for the graduate school paper as a photographer. He used photography to relax. Warren shared he felt lucky to have been introduced to people who had a huge amount of influence on his journey into the art world—a White House journalist who befriended him, and photographers he’d read about in publications who were masters of their trade, and who are now famous.
After moving back to New York following graduate school, Warren visited NYC’s MoMA (Museum of Modern Art), his first encounter with a fine arts museum.
“I saw all these phenomenal works done by the masters,” Warren remembers. “And that encouraged me to get back into photography.”
That was right around the time Warren and Marie first met.
Marie was inspired by Warren’s emerging interest in collecting art and began collecting herself. She took a liking to Renè Lalique pieces.
“Warren is a collector. It’s in his blood,” she said.
While Marie was expecting their son, a close friend of Warren’s went to an auction and urged him to bid on a sitting with legendary African American photographer James Van Der Zee, who is known for his photographic chronicles of Harlem in the 1920s and 1930s. Van Der Zee, who has now passed, was 95 at the time. Warren won the Van Der Zee bid—a portrait of him and Marie.
Around that time, the news was broadcasting that men wanted women to go into the military draft, and Marie rocked the world with a fashion-trend concept she created in response to the changing times.
“This was 1980, it was controversial, and I took advantage of the time,” she said. “Women in the draft were going to wear camouflage, hot pants, jumpsuits, and camisoles.”
The only challenge was finding material that had the camouflage design (it didn’t exist outside the military) and was also durable enough for active women’s wear. Marie’s partner solved that by finding out who supplied the military, and her company bought the same military-issue rip-stop fabric for their trouser pants and sportswear clothing.
“It went crazy. US magazine did a huge article with several very popular fashion models. There were editorials in 53 national dailies with sales in Macy’s and Neiman Marcus. Everyone ran with it because it took off.”
Marie’s journey began at what she calls “the greatest fashion store in the world,” Bonwit Teller, and she had been featured in Life magazine with the company in 1970.
As a result of her keen sense of timing, her company will be forever known as the creator of the camouflage fad for women.
Given her understanding of color, and her instinct for the elements of merchandising and fashion—it makes sense that she shared the same enjoyment for collecting art that Warren did.
After the Van Der Zee sitting, Warren was advised by an art consultant friend in NYC to buy the works of Norman Lewis, an African American Abstract Expressionist of the 1930s and 40s, who had been tragically overlooked.
“He was a master, but he didn’t get all the proper press he should have because of the way times were back then,” Warren said. “Lichtenstein, Reinhardt, Jackson Pollack…all those guys got it, but Norman didn’t get it, although he was part of the Studio 35 Group.”
Not only did it bother Warren that Lewis wasn’t recognized because he was creating works during an era when African Americans were ignored for many contributions, but he felt deeply that Lewis’s works were one-of-a-kind and needed to be recognized.
Warren and Marie’s move to Sarasota was instrumental in this all coming about.
Despite thinking they’d never move to Florida, a good friend told them they needed to find a place in Sarasota. When another friend called and invited them to come down for the weekend, they agreed. It was March 2009, and the friend put together a cocktail party with 15 couples that the Colberts described as “fabulous.”
They couldn’t believe that this was Sarasota.
“We fell in love in one day,” Marie remembers. “It seemed to be so right on so many levels, and the art community put it over the top.”
Not long after moving here, Warren began researching various artists in newspapers and would share with friends what was going on in the art world. Soon, he was hosting art salons in their home, introducing different artists. They brought in accomplished guest speakers from NYC who worked in the auction houses. One of those was a friend of the Colberts, Nigel Freeman, the director of African American Art at Swann Galleries in NYC.
It wasn’t long before Warren was approached by the former executive director at the Sarasota Art Museum, Anne-Marie Russell, to join the Museum Advisory Committee. His interest, passion, and knowledge of art caused him to be continually pursued by other museums as well.
According to Warren, Lewis’ works began to increase in value when a November 28, 2015, New York Times article, “Black Artists and the March into the Museum,” talked about how major art institutions were going to re-evaluate and start buying the works of African American artists.
“Major shows came up and several major museums in New York City started showing these artists,” Warren said. “The Swann Auction House, which was the largest auction house of African American artists, just blew up because these institutions began chasing Norman Lewis, Romare Bearden, and Ed Clark…all these great artists.”
“At the time, we were lucky to have owned many of their works,” he added.
In 2016, the Colberts attended a Norman Lewis Perspective showing at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Arts. Ruth Fine, the Curator at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., (now retired) organized the event. Frank Martucci, a Sarasota Ballet Board of Trustee member, and a close friend was involved as well.
“At the time, it was the most phenomenal show we’d ever been to,” Warren said. “An amazing display of Norman’s prolific strengths and works.”

Lewis, one of the first artists he discovered, is Warren’s favorite.
Another favorite is Sam Gilliam, whom Warren referred to when he was alive as “one of the last superstars on the planet.”
During the pandemic, Warren was concerned about museums. He reached out to Ringling Museum executive director, Steven High, and discussed the idea of doing a pop-up show. At first, High said it would be impossible because of the pandemic.
“I told him we need to do something to generate excitement, so I called up my friends in Sarasota who own works by Sam Gilliam,” Warren said. “I asked them if they would do me a favor and lend me their works for an exhibit at the Ringling Museum. Everyone I called said yes. We ended up with approximately 40 art pieces to choose from, most from the community, as well as a few from outside.”
“Once the works were selected for the exhibit, Steven curated the show with the assistance of Marian Carpenter, who at the time was the museum’s registrar.”

Not only was Warren able to pull off a pop-up show on Gilliam at the last minute, but the museum also had the good fortune of the exhibit being scheduled between a Pace Gallery showing in NYC and the upcoming Gilliam exhibit at Washington DC’s Hirshhorn Museum. This surprised the art community since it was structured during the throes of a pandemic.
Marie shared the immense and lasting impact this had on the community.
“That exhibit that Warren brought together on Sam Gilliam, the well-known African American artist, had exhibition donors were not all black,” she shared. “There were many diverse contributors.”
“It was people coming in from all sides…that’s what was happening,” she continued. “It’s bringing great talent out—that’s what Warren and I have been all about throughout our careers and our lives. It’s the crossover that we are interested in—for works to be out there because of their greatness.”
The Ringling College Gallery featured a story of 50 years in fashion, about Marie’s works. Marie will be included in an upcoming fashion book about her career in NYC, her background in the fashion industry, manufacturing, retailing, consulting, and education.
And now, having just visited 10 countries in Europe in celebration of their retirement— everything is richer when viewed through their artistic appreciation.
Sometimes, following a hobby you’re passionate about can lead down all kinds of roads you never expected, opening a world of beauty, fascination, and wonder.
“I enjoy talking to the artists and curators. They see the world differently,” Warren says. “It’s a refreshing approach to how we exist on this planet. When you look at their visions, their works on paper…they’re wired differently.”
“It gives me hope that we’re going to make it.”

When talking with Robyn Bishop-Marin, one of the first things you notice about her is her forthright attitude. It’s something she wears with ease—like the tasteful and smart black dress she chose for our interview.
In our interview, the conversation, just like the coffee, also flowed with ease. Her words not forced, but genuine and heartfelt.
And why wouldn’t they be? Her words were born from pain and a broken heart.
She speaks with wisdom of the time when her romantic comedy of a life veered off track sending her happy ending , at least momentarily, onto life’s cutting room floor. And while her story is far from original, it’s what she’s done with the material that makes her story. Her play, A Girl far from Normal , is an inspirational story worth telling.
Jolted by a sudden break-up she didn’t see coming after years of marriage, this mother of three boys was faced with a choice—one forever immortalized in the classic film Shawshank Redemption : “Get busy living or get busy dying.”
First a little background.
A self-proclaimed American mutt, her parent’s “meet cute” happened when her mother from India met and married her father, an American Air Force man.
She describes her upbringing as simple and innocent. “My parents didn’t over concern themselves with their children. All we had to do was be home before dark. Mom dropped us off for dance on Saturday mornings and picked us up late. It was very carefree upbringing. Your friends were everything.”
Yet theirs was not storybook romance. Her parents would divorce and her “normal” was gone.
“We moved from Normal, Illinois (yes, that is the name of the town!) to San Diego in 1975 when I was 13. Back then, San Diego was a lot like Sarasota today, one of the best places to live in United States. Dad was a stockbroker and mom was a stay-at-home mom.”
“When I was 15, my mom called one Saturday and said she wasn’t coming home for a couple of weeks and that I should tell my dad.”
At the time, her brothers were four- and nine-years-old. Not a normal situation for most, still the girl from Normal did what she was quickly learning—adapt.
“I grew up fast. I’ve always been an independent creature and I was born with a happy gene.” That happy gene would come in quite handy throughout her life and allow her to adapt to new places and new faces.
A self-proclaimed fanatic of romance movies and romantic comedies, Robyn watched them over and over because, she said, “They always have a happy ending. They’re a sure thing and I’ve always loved them. I love When Harry Met Sally as much as Pride and Prejudice .”
As she states in her play, A Girl Far from Normal , “Do you know what you call a play without a happy ending? A crap movie.”
She remembers the first time she fell in love with movies. “I saw Sound of Music when I was seven. When I saw the captain, (Christopher Plummer
as Captain von Trapp) I knew I was going to marry someone exactly like the captain.”
Robyn met her husband when she was 19 and married him when she was 21. “I believe that love saved me from a lot of heartbreak. I was enveloped in love early in life,” she shared.
“So, I had this real life rom-com life (romantic comedy). We had a great life together, rich, and interesting. Then one day he told me he wanted to take a marriage vacation. He gave me no reason but told me that I would be fine because I was the strongest person he knew.”
“It was like a hurricane. I was left alone after 33 years of living with somebody I considered my best friend.” Robyn’s normal was shattered. Her husband did not turn out to be her captain.
During her years as a stay-at-home mom, she fell in love with yoga and opened yoga studios in LA and Sarasota. She tried to cope with her breakup by embracing the yoga philosophy of becoming a whole person, incorporating mind, body, and spirit.
“My days were fine. I taught yoga during the day and that’s all about giving service to others. I’d get through the days, teach class, and then lock the doors and cry under my desk. The evenings were a problem for me. That’s when the alone time happens.”
One evening, she received her wake-up call from a friend’s mother
in Russia. She told Robyn she would die from heartbreak and that she couldn’t let it kill her. Robyn Googled can heartbreak kill you. Finding that on rare occasions it can, she was faced with a choice.
“I thought to myself, my husband may not be with me anymore, but he’s not going to kill me. I’m going to figure out how to cure my heartbreak. So, I started writing a brochure with things like: “How to Divide by Two and Remain Whole” and “ How to Survive a Fatal Stab Wound to the Heart and Still Make your Morning Meeting.”
Robyn filled her nights with activities she never thought of trying in places she had rarely been. On a path to meet new people, she signed up for classes, so she’d be busy Monday through Saturday nights. “I filled up my dance card.” She signed up for two classes at Florida Studio Theatre: No Fear Acting, and a monologue class called Going Long. Other nights were filled with ballroom dancing, singing and even cross fit training, which she hates.
“I also always kept a journal. It was very helpful. The day my mother called and said she wasn’t coming back, it’s in my journal. That was the start of my writing. Journaling has allowed me to get it out. It’s like therapy for me.”
“My class at FST (Florida Studio Theatre) on Thursday nights was called Spoken Memoir I enjoyed the writing and documenting my life. And it was fun to get up on stage and do the acting.”
During her campaign to say yes to fearful things, a friend told her about The Vagina Monologues. Robyn auditioned, bravely signing up, and learned the longest of The Vagina Monologues.
Once on stage, even she was surprised. “When those lights hit my face, I was like, what is this? I loved being on stage and loved commanding people’s ears and hearts.”
But Robyn needed more. “I wanted to go to places where I was almost invisible, with no labels—just a place where I could find liberty.”
Robyn sold her yoga studio, locked up her home on Siesta Key, took two suitcases, and moved to New York in 2017. She smiles when talking about that time.
“When I moved to New York I nicknamed myself Liberty. What I did in New York is all about liberty. Because there is nothing more that I appreciate about this country than liberty. We still must proclaim it and fight for it. It’s all encompassing…liberty in our speech…liberty in our freedom to move. No one was looking for me. I thought I’m going to flip the script on this. This is not a bad thing, it’s a good thing.”
She attended monologue classes using pieces from her journal that other actresses wanted to borrow. Politely she declined their offers yet took their advice to transform these works into a play.
“People would ask me what am I? A writer? A Producer? An Actor? I would tell them that I was nothing right now. I’m just writing, doing monologues, and want to write a rom com someday.”
Heeding their advice to write a play instead, she signed herself up at The Gotham School where she learned to write a play in 12 weeks.
A play reading followed. One week before her reading, wanting to work out a scene, she remembered something Jason Cannon, formerly at FST, told her: “If you ever go to audition, be a Ferrari. Peddle to the metal.”
“I thought I don’t know anyone in this room. I could completely fail, but I’m going for it. I’m anonymously alone amongst eight million people. No one knows me
here.” And that’s when she saw people in their chairs leaning into her story and performance.
A fellow writer was impressed to the point that eventually he offered to send her material to his Hollywood contact, who in turn was so impressed, he offered to fly in from LA and direct her play.
This was the end of 2019 and Robyn, who was new to the business had many questions, with one being, “When do you think I’m going to be on stage?” She was told she needed two years to get ready—a big jolt.
But she did understand. “I had no experience. They were putting up the money, so they wanted me to be good.”
“In December of 2019 at a doctor’s appointment, while filling out the line about my emergency contact, my
pen stopped. I didn’t have anybody to put down, so I left it blank. I went outside and while walking around the block on that winter day, I remembered my friend asking me how I was going to handle the weather. A cold breeze cut through me. I was freezing. I had no emergency contact. All the love was in Sarasota and LA. And my play is not going on for two years. I’m out of here.”
“I moved everything from New York and Sarasota to California just16 days before the Covid-19 pandemic. No one knew Covid-19 was happening. I got locked down.”
Locked down, but not locked out of acting.
An acting coach encouraged her to put the play on in someone’s backyard. She did so, professionally
producing the play twice during the lockdown while masking and social distancing groups of 40 and 57. Lockdown or not, the show went on.
California’s stringent lockdown policies eventually burnt her out forcing the girl from Normal to make a normal ultimatum to her producer in New York City.
“Put up or shut up. Either you’re my producer and you’re pushing the show forward, or I’m finding another producer.”
“We booked the Flea Theatre, which was developed with Sigourney Weaver. It’s considered off-off Broadway. For four nights, I sold out the intimate venue.”
In her words, she stumbled through, got a couple of good reviews and eventually took the play to The SoHo Playhouse where she became the play’s co-producer and had many well attended shows. In July of 2023, she closed the show.
Not knowing where the play is going next doesn’t bother her. And it’s a safe bet you can figure out where she wants it to land in her plan—right here in Sarasota. That would be a happy ending just like the romantic comedies she loves. It’s where the themes of her play ring true: happy people trust; happy people believe, and happy people forgive.
After all, the girl from Normal, Illinois is at heart a Midwest girl who loves “good people” and considers Sarasota to be her real home. Here she is surrounded by a community of good people who get her, have her back and hear her unique voice—a voice that continues to develop through all her life experiences.
If you want a “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade” lesson from this independent and happy woman from Normal, it’s this.
And maybe that’s the best part of this story about the girl with the happy gene. Maybe her story can be the “new normal. ” It’s one filled with much hope, inspiration, and heck of a lot of liberty.

Standing proudly on the corner of Orange Avenue and 10 th Street is the Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe (WBTT). For almost a quarter of a century, it has been paving the way for diversity and inclusion on stage. WBTT was founded by visionary Nate Jacobs and shines like a brilliant gem, dazzling patrons from all ages and backgrounds. Like all gems, it was not made without pressure and needed some polishing to reach the grandeur of what it is today. And, like all good stories, this one started with a call to action.
If the name Nate Jacobs sounds familiar, it’s because he has been a resident and active member of the Sarasota performing arts scene for decades. A graduate of Florida A&M and a truly gifted artist, known for his singing, acting, directing, and playwriting talents, Jacobs is a well-respected man of action and a beacon of guiding light for Black artists throughout the state of Florida.
Looking back on how it began, Jacobs recalls, “I wanted nothing more than to simply sit back and shy away from the spotlight, to be a quiet artist.”
In the late ‘80s, Jacobs was convinced to step into the world of performing arts by his brother’s teacher. Though he did not know it at the time, this was the first step toward creating WBTT. In the following years, Jacobs recognized a lack of authentic voices for African Americans in the theater. Black narratives and talent were being misrepresented, casually minimized, and even avoided altogether. This motivated Jacobs to question his place in life and stirred him to ponder what it would take to create a way to truly represent the African American experience. He had to choose between a quiet artist life or a life requiring him to stand
center stage in the spotlight to face adversity. Jacobs was called to action. Inspired by his experiences, he envisioned a platform that would celebrate the rich history, culture, and contributions of Black Americans. With a vision in mind, in 1999, with a small group of dedicated artists and supporters, Jacobs founded the Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe.
The early years of WBTT were marked by financial challenges, but Jacobs’ unwavering determination and the troupe’s undeniable talent garnered attention and support from local community members such as Jerry Springer. Each time the going got tough, Jacobs chose to step blindly into the unknown and have faith that everything would work out. Even when the future looked so bleak that he contemplated dissolving the entire troupe and moving to New York, he chose to believe in himself and the power of WBTT.
As the years went by, under Nate Jacobs’ direction, the WBTT produced shows that told heart-wrenching and
deeply moving stories of resilience, struggle, and triumph from the true African American perspective. The theatre troupe focused on presenting works by African American playwrights, as well as classics and contemporary plays that resonated with diverse audiences. As the WBTT gained momentum, it expanded its reach and became recognized not only in Sarasota but also in neighboring cities and beyond.
Today, Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe is an integral part of the Sarasota arts community. Its performances entertain, educate, enlighten, and initiate important conversations about the past, present, and future. The troupe fosters a greater understanding and appreciation for African American culture and history through powerful storytelling and exceptional talent.
Apart from their regular performances, WBTT is more than just a theatre troupe—it’s a nonprofit organization with a mission to engage a broad base of patrons and audiences, support the development of aspiring artists,
and build self-esteem in youth of color. WBTT actively engages with the community through outreach programs, providing platforms for aspiring young artists to explore their talents and express themselves through theatre. The troupe also conducts workshops, acting classes, and mentorship opportunities to nurture the next generation of diverse artists. In collaboration with local schools, the WBTT also reaches out to students through educational performances and workshops that address themes of diversity, tolerance, and empathy. Through these initiatives, Nate Jacobs and his team are inspiring a new generation of artists and art enthusiasts.
Jacobs and the Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe are a testament to the power of perseverance and a commitment to inclusivity. Through his vision and the dedication of the Troupe’s talented ensemble, Jacobs and WBTT continue to enrich Sarasota with stories that resonate across cultures and generations.
WBBT’s 2023-2024 season is themed “Simply the Best!” “We are presenting exactly that. Simply the best! The best talent, the best stories, the best entertainment,” says Jacobs. The show lineup promises an array of performances that continue to showcase the powerful and immense talent of Jacobs, his creative leaders, and the WBTT ensemble.

Since its inception in 1926, Art Center Sarasota has established itself as a founding pillar of the city’s thriving arts and cultural scene. For nearly a century, the Center has been empowering individuals of all ages, embracing artistic talents and creative potential through captivating exhibitions, enriching classes, and immersive workshops.
Nestled conveniently on the outskirts of downtown Sarasota, within the enchanting embrace of The Bay’s evolving 53-acre park and the newly developing Sarasota Performing Arts Center, Art Center Sarasota is more than a space for viewing art. It radiates as a vibrant hub for artistic exploration and community engagement that is admission-free and open to all.
Its allure as a hidden gem has garnered recognition and support from those who understand and cherish the integral role of art within the community. Each passing year has witnessed the Center’s influence grow, attracting artists and art enthusiasts alike.
Art Center Sarasota offers a diverse array of opportunities for the community to nurture their creativity and develop visual literacy skills. The welcoming nature of Art Center Sarasota leaves an indelible impression, beckoning
visitors to return time and time again with friends and loved ones.
At Art Center Sarasota, the commitment to fostering creativity extends beyond the inner walls of the building. Last January, Art Center Sarasota introduced their biennial mural project in collaboration with the Boys and Girls Club of Manatee County. The project begins with an open call for submissions, inviting talented local artists from Sarasota and surrounding counties to envision a mural that will grace the bay-facing wall of the building.
“We organize a committee who review the submissions, and then end up selecting a muralist who gets to meet with the kiddos from Boys and Girls Club to talk about what inspired their design, and what the process of making a mural looks like,” says executive director, Kinsey Robb.
While it might seem overwhelming at first glance, over the course of a few weeks, the children witness the gradual transformation of a colossal blank canvas into a finished masterpiece. The experience of contributing to a public artwork instills a profound sense of accomplishment, nurturing confidence in the children’s creative abilities.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity for the muralist to be able to inspire a younger generation, and we get to recognize it with the city’s public art department,” Robb adds.
The mural becomes a symbol of community effort and artistic expression, on display for two years. Families and visitors flock to the Art Center to admire the mural and occasionally pose for selfies.
Youth Saturdays
Art Center Sarasota has a long history of providing adult art education classes, workshops, and demonstrations. Over the years, they have also maintained a longstanding partnership with the North Sarasota County School District, playing annual host to the spring art show, which showcases and celebrates artwork made by students from K through 12.
“We also have had a long history of summer camps. Those programs really serve as a staple here. But they’ve also served as a really wonderful platform to build upon. Since I joined the Art Center, we’ve expanded our programming,” Robb shares with excitement. “Thanks to a very special donor who trusted in our vision, we launched Youth Saturdays last year. And not only did we fill our classes, but we also had a waitlist.”

Designed for ages 6 through 15 and coinciding with the school year, the free program runs from 1pm to 4pm on Saturdays, providing young participants with a safe space to delve into the world of art, fostering a sense of joy and self-expression outside the confines of the classroom. “You know, it’s different than school. It’s on the weekends, and it’s fun,” says Robb.
The Youth Saturday Program resonated deeply with the community, drawing kids from various school districts and diverse economic backgrounds, uniting them in art-based learning, creation, and sharing.
Led by the director of exhibitions, Christina Baril, Art Center Sarasota’s exhibitions are curated with meticulous care, bringing together a host of varying artistic perspectives and styles.
The Art Center’s commitment to fostering growth is exemplified through its juried exhibitions—a dynamic avenue for artists to submit their work, potentially securing a spot in a prestigious showcase. This not only offers
exposure but also the chance for artists to make their work available for purchase, a meaningful way to support both the artist and the Art Center’s mission.
Highlighting its dedication to artists, Art Center Sarasota’s juried exhibitions come complete with prizes, including monetary rewards and merit awards, a unique opportunity for artists to enhance their portfolio and curriculum vitae.
Kinsey Robb emphasizes, “The road to being a working artist is a long and challenging one. As galleries, museums, or cultural institutions, our role is to support artists and treat their work with respect and professionalism.”
In line with this ethos, the Art Center goes beyond exhibitions, offering enlightening artist talks that facilitate engagement among local artists and provide a platform for insightful discussions and creative exchanges.
Artist talks are a rare and privileged opportunity for art enthusiasts and novices to engage with professional artists on a personal level. During these captivating sessions,
artists share their perspectives on their creative process, their conceptual interests, and the stories behind their artworks.
The audience gains insight into the artists’ motivations and inspirations. Questions that may have lingered while observing a piece find answers in the artist’s words, illuminating layers of meaning and intention embedded within the art itself.
Art Center Sarasota thrives on the generosity of its members, volunteers, and patrons.
“Being able to have financial support to make things affordable, or to have free programming is essential. But equally as important are the teaching instructors who lead our classes. We want to think of diversity, accessibility, and inclusivity on a holistic level. It’s the teaching methods and the approaches to teaching that we want to consider. And ultimately, our day-to-day attitude and the belief in the work that we do, and the people that we serve,” Robb states.
The Center cherishes every individual who chooses to make a meaningful financial impact, and personalized discussions are held to explore the various opportunities and ways of giving. By supporting Art Center Sarasota, donors become enablers of artistic dreams, inspiring artists of all ages.
An Ongoing Legacy
As Art Center Sarasota approaches its centennial milestone, it stands firmly rooted in its rich history while embracing an exciting future. The Center’s dedication to expanding its educational outreach programs and fostering community engagement reflects its commitment to nurturing creativity. With its doors wide open and its heart receptive to all, Art Center Sarasota continues to cultivate a community of creators, dreamers, and visionaries. By nurturing the artistic spirit in individuals of all ages and backgrounds, the Center aims to create a world where art is not merely observed but embraced as a transformative force that unites, inspires, and empowers.
Kinsey Robb said it best, “Without artists, we don’t have art. Without art, we lose an unbelievable gift to society.”

As Executive Creative Director of Sarasota Scene, I have the fun task each month of designing the magazine, and I love it. But my first love is illustration—that’s where my heart is. As a natural visual storyteller, I’ve been creating since I was young. I have grown up drawing, creating, and building creatures, inventing stories, and deeply admiring creation of all kinds. This passion and skillset were honed to a professional level at Ringling College of Art and Design through my Bachelor’s degree in Illustration / Minor in Business of Art and Design.
Since graduating, I’ve not only been lucky enough to work my way up the ranks at Sarasota Scene, but I’ve had a variety of clientele that allow me to pursue exciting and versatile projects outside of my day job. I often joke that I live a double life, since many of my freelance clients range from video game companies to book covers to metal bands. Anything that offers an enticing visual language, or a thrilling concept that I can run with and represent in an engaging way feeds my creativity.
So when Stephen Baker, Marketing Director at Sarasota Opera, asked if I would illustrate for the operas in its upcoming season, I jumped at the chance.
This season, the Opera highlights the thrilling tales of Carmen, Lucia di Lammermoor, L’infedeltà delusa, and Luisa Miller, all
of which offer versatile and dramatic themes of love, loss, and passion—and all of which are visually and conceptually rich. Because of this, it was an exciting task to tackle.
I should start off by saying the whole team at Sarasota Opera is incredible to work with, not only in terms of allowing for creative freedom, but also in general efficiency, and a succinct vision of what they wanted to see represented for what will without a doubt be another great season. It truly made this project a collaborative effort.
Being a borderline opera-novice, I started by watching ample videos of the operas, listening to the songs, and generally familiarizing myself with the stories and cultural backgrounds. Some of the operas were easier to tackle than others—for instance, Carmen in my head was an instant no-brainer. Once I finished the second act, my mind immediately went to the striking red dress, the iconic dance, and the beauty of the liberated woman.
L’infedeltà delusa, being the most colorful illustration, turned out to be one of the more difficult pieces. Having so many moving parts and characters in the opera, it was hard to capture in one image. But with the help and feedback of Executive Director Richard Russell, we settled on showing off the beautiful countryside where the story takes place.
Luisa Miller was a bit of a treat, since I got to really flesh out the environment in which Luisa writes the fateful letter to her lover. Generally, in my illustrations, I love hiding easter eggs that convey the story further—things that lovers of that story will recognize when they really look at it. The illustration for Luisa Miller is no exception. Can you find them?
Lastly, Lucia di Lammermoor was my personal favorite. Coming into the project, I wasn’t expecting some of the darker themes that Lucia provided. Anyone who’s seen my personal illustrations know that “dark” is where I tend to lean, but finding a balance between conveying the thrilling drama of Lucia’s iconic breakdown, while still being palatable to the average viewer was one of the challenges
While this exciting project with Sarasota Opera was my most recent, I keep active in my industry over multiple facets. My work here at the magazine designing engaging content for our readers feeds my left-brain love of puzzles (any of our employees will tell you putting the magazine together is definitely a puzzle!) as well as my love of pretty, high end, luxe content. I also feel blessed to be able to keep up some of my illustration roots on the side. Graduating from Ringling College, I initially wasn’t sure exactly where I wanted to venture—whether it be concept art, editorial illustration, creature design, or one of the other exciting industries Ringling trained us for—but now that I’m reaching my 6-year anniversary with the magazine, I’m always grateful to have such well-rounded experience, the kind of experience you only get from a small business. While it sometimes feels like I’m always busy (and I am), all I can say is my days (and nights) are filled with doing the things I love best!
To view more of my illustrations, paintings, and sculpts, or to enquire about a commission, please visit www.DarcyKellyL.com.
Skin cancer is one of the most common types of cancer globally, affecting millions of people every year. While early detection and prevention are essential, when skin cancer is diagnosed, finding an effective treatment is crucial.
Named after Dr. Frederic Mohs, Mohs surgery is a specialized surgical procedure designed to remove skin cancers with unmatched precision and success rates. Mohs surgery has become the preferred option for treating certain types of skin cancer, especially if the cancer is in a high-risk area such as on the face or neck.
Being diagnosed with skin cancer can be challenging. Many patients have questions like:
• When will my life get back to normal?
• Will my surgical team provide the best outcome and the best patient experience possible?
This is why, at Arsenault Mohs, we completely reimagined the typical Mohs experience from the ground up, creating an environment where patients are treated best. At Arsenault Mohs our surgeons are fellowship-trained in Mohs Micrographic Surgery, as well as completing specialized training in advanced reconstructive repair. Patients leave their surgery day feeling confident that they are cancer-free, down to the microscopic level. Furthermore, patients go home assured they received the best cosmetic outcome possible.
The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis and usually begins with the administration of local anesthesia to ensure the patient’s comfort throughout the surgery. The surgeon then removes the visible portion of the cancerous lesion using a scalpel. However, what sets Mohs surgery apart is the careful examination of the tumor margins.
what I s m O hs surgery, and h Ow d O es I t wO rk ? By Jennifer Brammeier, DO, FAAD and Brian Bishop, MD, MPH, FAADThe excised tissue is meticulously examined under a microscope. If any cancer cells are detected at the margins, the surgeon goes back and removes another thin layer of tissue from the specific area where cancer cells remain. This process is repeated until no cancer cells are detected in the examined tissue, indicating that the entire tumor has been successfully removed.
One of the most significant advantages of Mohs surgery is its impressive cure rates. With this technique, cure rates for most skin cancers can exceed 97%, which is notably higher than other conventional treatments. By eliminating cancer cells layer by layer, Mohs surgery ensures minimal damage to healthy surrounding tissue, leading to better cosmetic and functional outcomes compared to other treatment options. Finally, the area is expertly closed using advanced reconstructive repair techniques.
At Arsenault Mohs, our team takes the time to fully understand each patient, personalizing the experience in a way that means the most to them. Everything has been thoughtfully designed to protect the patient’s time and to make them as comfortable as possible.
