Kerridge cooks up the cash for Scannappeal Acclaimed celebrity chef and Buckinghamshire resident, Tom Kerridge, from the two Michelin star ‘Hand and Flowers’, Marlow, has joined Scannappeal as a Patron. To launch his patronage, Tom Kerridge delighted 34 guests at a private dinner hosted by Scannappeal Chairman, William Baxter CBE, at the beautiful Stoke Park. Guests were treated to a delicious taste of the classic ‘Hand and Flowers’ menu which included: ‘Pork and pistachio terrine with apple caramel and crisp rye; treacle cured fillet of beef, smoked pomme puree and beef suet cottage pie and a whiskey and rye pudding’. The evening went on to raise over £22,000. This is the first time that Tom Kerridge has taken on a formal position with a charity and we are delighted to have him on board. On the evening he told guests “Scannappeal is a great charity doing so much in our community. They really are making a big difference to the diagnosis, treatment and care our local hospitals can deliver and I am delighted to be able to help”. Explaining the importance of the evening, the Chairman said, “We’re thrilled to have Tom Kerridge join us as a Patron and we’re looking forward to a long and rewarding partnership with him”.

Scannappeal Summertime

This summer the weather kept us constantly on our toes (and under a gazebo) but it did not deter us from hosting a great array of events raising nearly £27,000. Thank you so much for joining us and we look forward to seeing you at one of our future events.

Open Gardens We were fortunate to open eight gardens this summer with each one offering something different, including a natural pond, an old Romany caravan and wildflower meadows. We’d like to thank all of our garden owners for hosting us this year: The Old Work House - No’s 2 & 3 (Sheelah McGechan, Peter and Volly); Lord’s Wood (The Messum Family); Garden Cottage (Barnaby and Tricia Usborne); Burrow Farm (David Palmer); Isherwood House (Sue Hewson); One Day Farm (Liz and Rick Holroyd); The South Pavilion (The Right Honourable Tony and Cherie Blair CBE QC) and Tyringham Hall (Sherry Scott and Phil Johnson). Come rain or shine, supporters joined us to enjoy tea and cake, as well as delight at all the beautiful gardens. Thank you to all our volunteer bakers and Progress Bakery for providing a selection of delicious cakes.

Charity Golf Day

Summertime Swing

Now in its 18th year, the annual Charity Golf Day took place in June at the Buckinghamshire Golf Club, Denham. 20 teams of four came together to raise nearly £17,000 for Scannappeal.

It may have been gloomy outside but inside our summer marquee there was a real party atmosphere at this year’s Summertime After the teams had completed Swing. Our 250 guests 18 holes, they were able to sit enjoyed their own back and enjoy a delicious three delicious picnics before course meal with entertainment listening and dancing to the sound of the Bucks, Berks and Oxon Big Band! We raised a fantastic £2,400 for provided by comedian, The Sound Appeal to purchase advanced diagnostic Aaron James. A fantastic equipment for people with hearing problems. Thank auction was held with 12 lots you to all those who attended! up for grabs. Prizes included a round of golf with Phil Tufnell, an Aston Martin weekend and fishing on the River Test. Thank you to UCC (United Coffee Company) for sponsoring the whole event, to all our ‘hole’ sponsors and those who took part. See you on the green on 7 June 2017.

A ROT RY

High Wycombe Rotary Club kindly hosted a Silent Auction with proceeds going to the Cancer Fighting Fund for prostate, kidney and bladder cancers. The auction took place at Adams Park and raised over £3,000. Some of the fantastic lots included gliding lessons, tickets for a private box at Wycombe Wanderers and a selection of vintage port.

Heart of Bucks (Buckinghamshire’s Community Foundation) donated £3,348 to our Sound Appeal to purchase one of the diagnostic tympanometers needed. Lauren Fallaize from Heart of Bucks said: “We are delighted to award Scannappeal a grant towards new equipment helping to improve audiology services to thousands of patients in the south of Buckinghamshire.” Richard Dickson Director

Masked Ball in aid of the Eye See Appeal

In September, Tyringham Hall hosted its second marquee event in aid of a Scannappeal. The Masked e ye s e e a p p e Ball welcomed over 100 guests to enjoy a three course meal including Welsh pâté, Burmese curry and homemade fruit crumble whilst being serenaded by a solo artist and the Aylesbury Grammar School Band. Our grateful thanks go to the Black Tie Group Committee members chaired by Gordon Rogers and the owners of Tyringham Hall, Sherry Scott and Phil Johnson, for hosting the event. A magnificent £7,000 was raised for the Eye See Appeal for Stoke Mandeville Hospital.

Universal Care, Beaconsfield, celebrated its 30th anniversary by inviting local charities to use their conference facilities and making a donation of £1,000. For Scannappeal’s day in September, two events were held. The first was to thank long standing volunteers who have supported the charity for over 15 years, who enjoyed afternoon tea with one of our Patrons, Countess Howe. This was followed by equipment demonstrations for some supporters living in the Beaconsfield area which was hosted by another Patron, Sir Stuart Burgess.

Helping stroke patients – 14 local organisations have donated funds for our Speech and Language Therapy project to provide specialist equipment for patients with difficulty swallowing, impaired speech following a stroke, Parkinson’s disease, cancer of the throat, muscular dystrophy or head injuries. Representatives recently visited Amersham Hospital to see the equipment that was purchased. Carolyn Charlesworth - We were all very sad when Carolyn Charlesworth retired as a Trustee after 20 years. Carolyn has been a Consultant Radiologist at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust since 1994. She was the Clinical Director of the Radiology Department from 1999 and retired from her work in 2015. Carolyn will be dearly missed by all her colleagues and we thank her for all her tremendous support and dedication over the years.

A remarkable legacy for Buckinghamshire hospitals Over the years gifts in wills have been extremely important to Scannappeal enabling us to purchase some of the latest equipment for our hospitals. In 2015 we received an exceptional and generous legacy from Mrs Margaret Easom. Scannappeal are delighted that due to Mrs Easom’s gift of £1.5 million we have been able to fund a wide variety of equipment, big and small, across the county, benefitting all of the local community. The largest commitment is enabling a second Cardiology Catheter lab to be built at Wycombe Hospital which Scannappeal will purchase the equipment for. This is a tremendous leap forward for the hospital and for patients across the county. The equipment is a fully integrated imaging system that meets a wide range of clinical needs for intervention and diagnostic imaging. As well as excellent image quality, the equipment will provide improved workflow and image management. Piers Clifford, Head of Cardiology, said “Receiving this tremendous support to enable a brand new catheter lab at Wycombe hospital to be built is very exciting. It will reduce patient transfer times, make patient flow more efficient and improve access for local people”. Mrs Easom’s legacy has also supported the purchase of other vital medical equipment across 12 different clinical departments including: theatres and clinical care; speech and language therapy; orthopaedics; surgery; radiology and ophthalmology. Mrs Easom’s legacy will remain in Buckinghamshire for many years to come and impact on thousands of local residents. For this we are truly, truly grateful.

This £500,000 Appeal for digital screening equipment and cutting edge technology for 3D imaging is nearing the target. The depth of these exceptionally sharp images will assist clinicians in visualising abnormalities and potential tumours. This equipment will radically change Buckinghamshire’s breast screening service.

Phase six of the Cancer Fighting Fund is raising £130,000 for equipment to treat patients with prostate, kidney and bladder cancers, and other urological conditions. Advanced equipment will allow surgeons to radically improve the precision of laparoscopic surgery, some of which require the dissection and reconstruction of the urinary system.

Eye See Appeal a

This Appeal is for £265,000 to purchase five specialist machines. Three are for cataract surgery (phacoemulsification) and two more for more complex eye surgery (vitrectomy) helping to improve and restore vision. 4,500 local patients with cataracts, bleeding inside the eye, macular degeration and detached retinas will benefit from this new technology each year.

All Heart Appeal This Appeal for £185,000 is to buy two latest generation 3D scanners to diagnose and evaluate heart disease. The advanced cardiovascular imaging system uses ultrasound to generate detailed, real time, 4D moving images of the heart. One of the scanners comes with unique Polarvision which allows a 3D reconstruction of the beating heart to be projected from an adjacent screen. This is a truly amazing tool that allows the clinician to view the heart in detail prior to planning heart surgery.

Fox’s Outdoor, Amersham, has supported us by donating two fantastic new Event Shelters. These shelters are lightweight and easy to put up, just what we need for our outdoor events. Our huge thanks to Fox’s for these fantastic additions to our events! A HUGE well done to the brave eight who joined the Scanna Skydive team jumping 13,000ft out of a plane. They have raised a tremendous £6,000 and our thanks go to everyone who supported them in their stomach churning challenge! Tough Mudder Warrior Chris Brown has completed three Tough Mudder events despite suffering a stress fracture to his ankle! Chris is on target to raise £1,500 for the Digital and 3D Breast Screening Appeal in support of the wonderful breast cancer nurses who treated his wife, thankfully now five years in the clear.
