Welcome to Robert Lindsay as Scannappeal’s Principal Patron

Denham resident and one of the UK’s most acclaimed actors, Robert Lindsay, has been appointed as Scannappeal’s Principal Patron. Robert Lindsay, who has lived in Buckinghamshire for over 21 years, takes on this new charitable role as Scannappeal prepares for an exciting phase in its operation. Known for his role as Ben in TV series My Family alongside roles in Citizen Smith, Hornblower and appearances for the Royal Shakespeare Company. He has won a BAFTA, Tony Award and three Olivier Awards. Well known for his commitment to charitable causes, this appointment is the first time Robert Lindsay has taken a formal position with a charity. “As a Buckinghamshire resident, I’ve witnessed first hand the fantastic outcomes that Scannappeal helps our local NHS to deliver. And as someone who is a passionate believer in our NHS, the opportunity to really make a difference and help our local community receive an even better service when they need it was simply a pull I could not resist.” William Baxter CBE, Chairman, expressed his pleasure at Scannappeal’s newest LOOK INSIDE appointment, “We’re thrilled to have Robert join our team and we’re looking forward to a long and rewarding partnership with him. An Audience with Tuffers On Thursday 4th February, former England cricketer Phil Tufnell shared stories and anecdotes to an audience of 300 helping to raise valuable funds for Scannappeal. Telling stories of his sporting highlights, life as a television star, Tuffers told one story about his room sharing with Sir Ian Botham during key tours. ‘One evening “Beefy” wasn’t terribly pleased when he put on his new silk socks to discover that somebody (Tuffers) had cut the toes off them. He pulled them up so forcibly they landed round his thighs. Phil was chased around Lords for an hour or so by Beefy on that occasion. Kindly hosted by Sytner High Wycombe, the event was a sell out and the first time Tufnell has worked alongside Scannappeal. The £5,500 was assigned to support the Laser Heart Appeal. Thank you to Chandler Garvey for kindly sponsoring the event. Robert Lindsay, attending his first event for Scannappeal said. “The event was a raging success. Phil wowed the audience with his stories and guests were so very generous in their support of our cause. It was a fantastic privilege to be part of such an entertaining evening which also helped to deliver the final funds enabling us to meet our £250,000 goal for Scannappeal’s Laser Heart Appeal.” We would like to say a special thanks to Andy Muir, former local radio Breakfast Show presenter, who interviewed Tuffers on the night with questions from the audience.

Ivan Dunleavy - We are sorry to bid farewell to Ivan Dunleavy after 9 years as a Trustee of Scannappeal. Ivan has spent his career in media businesses, initially in finance roles. Ivan and Michael Grade led the management buy in of Pinewood Studios in 2000. As Chief Executive of Pinewood Studios, Scannappeal has been fortunate enough to hold numerous events including the Silver Jubilee and famous Forties Ball and special film screening events including Bond and Gravity. We wish Ivan all the best and thank him for his dedication and support over the years.

News from our supporters

Support for Speech and Language Therapy



A big THANK YOU to the many local organisations who have supported our speech and language therapy project. The project will purchase a range of equipment for patients with difficulty swallowing or impaired speech following a stroke, those with Parkinson’s disease, cancer of the throat, muscular dystrophy or head injuries. It will significantly improve the existing service for patients at local hospitals and extend the service to the community so that therapy can be accessed in patients’ homes. As this newsletter went to press, we had received donations from • Bucks Masonic Centenary Fund • Amersham Lions Club • Amersham Ladies Luncheon Club • Hughenden Masonic Lodge • Great Missenden Rotary Club • Marlow Masonic Lodge and Sweet Charity Marilyn Humphries, Director of Sweet Charity who donated £3,000, said ‘Our aim is to support local groups with grants that we have available, especially those who offer brilliant services to people in our community’. £10,000 is still needed to complete this project which will benefit 750 local patients each year. Items available for sponsorship range from digital voice recorders at £100 to a specialist monitor for endoscopes at £4,000.

Golfers at Ellesborough Golf Club had a magnificent year of fundraising during 2015 thanks to Richard Altmann, Men’s Captain, who adopted Scannappeal for ‘his’ year. Just under £5,500 was donated to our Cancer Fighting Fund at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, which included Geoff Crane’s epic cycle ride. This was presented to John Leggett, Scannappeal Trustee, at a special dinner at the end of the captain’s year.

Musicathon

The end of January saw the Scannappeal Friends of Stoke Mandeville Hospital organise a ‘Musicathon’ event. It was an amazing day in Wing, with 12 hours of sponsored music and 200 musicians taking part all to raise funds for the Cancer Fighting Fund. Musicians ranged from local bands and choirs to music students of all ages. The musicians, sale of refreshments and raffle, raised in the region of £4000!

Kop Hill Climb® Fundraising for the local community

Proceeds from the Kop Hill Climb have been used to support our Cancer Fighting Fund at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. £3,500 has been donated to the £140,000 Appeal for a C-arm fluoroscope. Kop Hill is now an event run by Heart of Bucks (Buckinghamshire’s Community Foundation) which seeks to raise money locally to support the community within Buckinghamshire. Linda Cannon Clegg, Trustee of the Foundation and current Chair of the KHC donations panel said ‘In particular, we were very impressed with the amount already raised by this project over the course of the last year. With the total so nearly within reach we wanted to help ‘close the gap’ for the C-Arm to be funded.’ Damian Eustace - After nearly 15 years one of our clinical Trustees, Damian Eustace, has stepped down from his role.

Damian is a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Wycombe and Amersham Hospitals. He qualified from St Thomas’ Hospital in 1983 and has worked in a number of teaching and district general hospitals. He has been a consultant since 1995, and at Wycombe since 1997. Damian has led on a couple of our major Appeals over the years including the Woman’s Appeal in 2003 and the Keyhole unit Appeal in 2007. We are very grateful for all that Damian has done for Scannappeal over the years and wish him all the best.

Laser Heart Appeal successfully reaches its £250,000 target… On Monday 29th February 2016 at Wycombe Hospital, Scannappeal Patron, Countess Howe DL and Chairman, William Baxter hosted a reception to thank some of the supporters of the Laser Heart Appeal. Scannappeal are delighted to have reached the target of £250,000 for the Laser Heart Appeal to purchase four pieces of equipment to help diagnose and treat heart disease based at Wycombe Hospital. The reception welcomed Dr Andrew Money-Kyrle, Consultant Cardiologist, having just finished an operation and still in his scrubs, Dr Money-Kyrle spoke of the difference that the equipment has made to the Cardiology Department. He was pleased to give an insight into the new equipment the Appeal is purchasing including a 3D cardiovascular ultrasound system. Countess Howe thanked donors and supporters and confirmed the equipment will benefit 10,000 local patients, before she and William Baxter unveiled the Recognition Wall. Guests at the reception were invited to see demonstrations of key equipment including an Echocardiology Vivid 9 Scanner, emergency hand held V Scan and a Heart Works Simulator and well as seeing their names proudly placed on the Recognition Wall.

As well as opening their garden, Mr and Mrs Ford have organised their Strictly Dance series for 15 years.

Our very own Elvis, Billy Gallacher, has held his tribute nights for over 25 years.

Our thanks to the Louis Baylis Trust (Maidenhead Advertiser) who donated £1000 to the Appeal .

Councillor Mahboob Hussain has supported Scannappeal Cardiology Appeals for many years, including the Ramadam Radio Appeal alongside the local community and Wycombe District Council.

The tremendous and continued kindness and commitment of the staff at The Rebellion Brewery whose open weekends not only grow in attendance but also in generosity.

Equipment…

A microscope has recently been purchased for breast reconstruction in patients who have had cancer. The waiting times are long and only performed at Stoke Mandeville but this means that surgery can be carried out at Wycombe Hospital giving increased access for our patients.

This Appeal is for state of the art equipment to detect and treat cancer patients. Since 2007 there have been a variety of projects, large and small, to provide 21st century equipment for the early detection of lung, breast and bowel cancer and for the treatment of prostate cancer.

We are delighted to be launching the next major Appeal for £130,000 for equipment to treat patients with prostate, kidney and bladder cancers, and other urological conditions. The cases of phase six: urology these cancers is increasing due to better detection. Advanced equipment will allow surgeons to radically improve the precision of laparoscopic surgery, some of which require the dissection and reconstruction of the urinary system. Once purchased, Buckinghamshire will be one of the first counties to have this specialist urological equipment benefitting 1,000 local patients each year.

Urological cancers – the facts: l prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK - 84% of patients survive for 10 or more years following corrective surgery. l bladder cancer is the 7th most common cancer in the UK, and the 4th most common in men in the UK. l kidney cancer is the 8th most common cancer in the UK. l 500 people in the local area will suffer from these cancers each year.

The 3D Theatre Stack System will l allow the surgeon to perceive distances more accurately making it more precise when operating and undertaking reconstruction. l mean shorter operations and the patient is under general anaesthetic for less time, reducing post-operative surgery effects. l result in less blood loss, pain and risk and reduce the time a patient is in hospital. l help prostate patients resume normal life more quickly than with open radical prostatectomy surgery. Coming soon… The Eye Appeal

Cardiology

This Appeal for £265,000 for five microscopes to radically improve surgery on the eyes, helping restore and improve vision. The microscopes, for cataract and more complex eye surgery will be based at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. The equipment will benefit 4,500 local patients each year.

The new Heart Appeal for £185,000 is for two latest generation cardiovascular scanners which will allow detailed, 3D moving pictures of the heart to be recorded. They will enable surgeons to view the heart in detail prior to carrying out heart surgery. The equipment will benefit 3,500 patients per year.

Equipment…

An electric operating table has been purchased which allows patients to be positioned safely during surgery. It has a weight capacity of 450kg and due to the increase in obesity the current table is not able to be used safely. The hand control allows the table to tilt or sit the patient up during surgery at the touch of a button.

Events l Scannappeal Skydive! If you’re up for a thrilling challenge then our Scannappeal Skydive could be just what you’re looking for. This sponsored 10,000 feet freefall parachute jump takes place on Saturday 16th July at Brackley Airfield (15 miles north of Oxford). Our information pack has everything you need including your reservation and sponsorship forms and we’ve made everything as easy as possible for you to take part. All we ask is that you to raise £395 in sponsorship money in order for you to jump for free and in turn we will receive an average donation of £140. In addition to this, every extra pound that you raise over the minimum comes straight to the charity, so please try to raise as much as you possibly can! This challenge event is possible thanks to professional events organisers Skyline who receive a flat rate per jumper for organising the jumps for us. Skyline specialise in organising fundraising events for charities such as ourselves so you’re in safe hands. We sincerely hope that you will decide to give it a go and help us raise vital funds in order to continue our work. Don’t forget, all you have to do is raise the minimum amount of sponsorship and you will get to jump for free! Mud Glorious Mud

We love hearing about different events and challenges our supporters are doing to raise funds for Scannappeal. Some challenges make us feel guilty as we tuck into our chocolate biscuits in the office; Chris Brown’s challenge is one. In 2010 Chris’ wife was diagnosed with breast cancer only two years into their married life, turning their lives upside down. Through the help and support of Scannappeal, the wonderful breast cancer nurses and the treatment received the all clear was given, and then their family blossomed with the arrival of twins, Charlie and Matilda at the end of January 2014. Having been faced with his own family challenge Chris Brown is taking on not one obstacle challenge but three! Tough Mudder is a 16-20 kilometre obstacle event in mud! Currently embarking on his training Chris is raising money for Scannappeal (www.mydonate.bt.com/ fundraisers/chrisbrown3) and will be facing his first Tough Mudder in May. We wish him all the best and look forward to hearing all about the challenges!
