Hello and a warm welcome It was wonderful to see a return to events earlier this year with so many supporters at our open garden events, enjoying tea and homemade cake in beautiful surroundings. We are now able to bring you a packed calendar of events as we move into the festive period. You will see the return of Frugal Fashion, the Christmas Concert and a private film screening of the multi award winning ‘The Father’. Please see page 12 for a full events listing and we very much hope to see you soon.
Hello and welcome
In this edition we are delighted to announce the launch of a new and very exciting project, the Robot Appeal. This new appeal will see the charity aiming to raise £1 million to support the purchase of a surgical robot which will offer world class robotic techniques to local patients, and help establish the Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust as a world class elective treatment centre. We are thrilled to welcome Emma Wood and Willam Baxter CBE, Chair Sarah Vickers to our Board of Trustees. HELP US RAISE £1 MILLION for a surgical robot to help transform patients' lives
Our latest appeal in partnership with the local NHS Trust, is aiming to deliver the very latest innovation in robotic surgery for patients in Bucks and surrounding areas. The Robot Appeal has an ambitious target of £1 million to help fund a state of the art surgical robot for Wycombe hospital, with the objective being that it will be installed and operational in the 2022-23 year.

The prospect of having an operation can be worrying for many people. How quickly will they be able to get back to normal? Will they be left with a big scar? Will there be a long hospital stay? However, traditional open surgery, where a surgeon operates with handheld instruments is not the only method available. Less invasive approaches which only require a few small cuts, called minimally invasive surgery, include laparoscopic and robotic assisted surgery, are now becoming more widely used.
We want to ensure that Bucks hospitals can offer local patients the best possible outcomes closer to home as well as recruiting and retaining the best possible surgeons. The clinical evidence for robotic surgery in urological cancer has been in existence for some time. Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust are ahead nationally with excellent clinical outcomes in laparoscopic cancer surgery. However, more evidence recently published demonstrates a strong clinical justification for robotic surgery in colorectal and gynaecological cancer surgery. This means the volume of cases and benefits to patients have prioritised the need for such surgery to be available in Bucks hospitals.
The new da Vinci XI model offers the most advanced technology and delivers the gold standard in robotic surgery. The surgical robot, to be based at Wycombe hospital, will initially be used for cancer treatment in the areas of colorectal, urological and gynaecological cancer, and for non-cancer treatment in these areas. There are other non-cancer specialties too, such as upper gastro-intestinal, hiatus hernia and abdominal wall surgery, and as the surgeons become more experienced, the number of cancer specialisms they see will change along with the patient numbers. When robotic surgery is in full use with increased patient numbers, it is likely it will be used fully six days a week.
What is robotic surgery? Doctors use many technologies that enhance their capabilities beyond what the human body allows. MRI and CT scanners, for example, enable doctors to ‘see’ inside the body. Similarly, many surgeons perform robotic assisted surgery because it extends the capabilities of their own eyes and hands. Robotic surgery can help make the thought of surgery far easier for patients. It can sometimes take months to recover from traditional open surgery, but robotic surgery incisions are much smaller, reducing the risk of complications and infection, minimising scarring, pain and discomfort, and helping patients recover and return home more quickly.
Da Vinci XI surgical robot Da Vinci platforms have pioneered new capabilities in the operating room for over 20 years. The da Vinci XI provides the most advanced equipment, vision and features. It is versatile and flexible and can be used for a variety of complex procedures, helping deliver better care and outcomes. The model is made up of three specific, high tech components: a patient cart, the surgeon console and a vision cart. The surgeon is in the operating room and 'drives' the robot, controlling the instruments to perform surgery. The console adjusts in multiple ways to help the surgeon get a good fit for their height and reach. It allows the surgeon to have total control of the 'wristed' instrument on each of the four arms and the surgeon's hand movements are replicated by the robot in real time.
Robotic surgery is a form of keyhole surgery involving small incisions where a surgeon controls a computer enhanced robot to mimic the surgeon’s hand with absolute precision.
The real difference is that the robot ‘hands’ can make precise movements that a human hand or instrument cannot. Foot pedals allow other functions to be performed at the same time. One of the major benefits is that the surgeon's perspective at the console, is of an operating field right in front of them even if the actual area of operating is above or to the side. The robotic hands have the ability to work at angles that standard laparoscopy cannot do. This can all be done without applying force on the patient's abdominal wall. The vision cart houses advanced vision and energy technologies and provides communication across all the components. It is the integration hub for power generation, image processing and information systems. It also includes a large HD display that shows a live feed of the procedure which is visible to everyone in the operating room.

Appeals update In our spring newsletter we were excited to share that we had reached the fundraising target of £1.5 million to complete the Bucks MRI Appeal. We are now thrilled to let you know that the second MRI scanner has just been delivered to Stoke Mandeville hospital. Although later than first planned, due to Covid-19 and a variety of issues during the site preparation and build, it is incredible to know that the equipment is now on site and will be operational before the end of the year. The delivery of the scanner on Saturday 2 October is best described as a gigantic game of Tetris. Corridors were cleared, doors removed to ensure the scanner could be manoeuvred in and then doors quickly rehung to allow hospital life to continue as normal. Incredible planning and accuracy from all involved. The next stage of the installation plan is for the scanner to be securely enclosed into the new dedicated radiology room to make it safe to be operational. Physicists from a London teaching hospital will then visit the site to test the system whilst staff are fully trained to allow it to go live with the first patients due to be scanned by the end of November. Thank you to everyone who has supported this appeal and enabled us to deliver on our promise. We are privileged to support our NHS colleagues to ensure they have the best equipment to diagnose local patients and we could not have achieved it without your support.
Cardiac Appeal
The Cardiac Appeal recently received a welcome boost of £15,000 from a local charitable trust which means we have exceeded the halfway point of the appeal target. Our aim now is to complete the £125,000 appeal in the next six months so that the equipment can be in place by early next year.
The cardiology department at Wycombe hospital will soon benefit from this new ground breaking Every heart matters scanner that will be faster and provide greater DXA Scanner - £85,000 diagnostic confidence. The dedicated cardiac ultrasound system generates detailed, real time moving images of the heart, which will allow clinicians to assess the structure and function of the heart, even in the most complex of cases, and improve the accuracy of diagnosis. We are very grateful for all the support we have received for the Cardiac Appeal - we know that many of our supporters personally understand the difference this equipment will make to our hospitals and local patients, patients such as Peter.

Just before Christmas 2020, Peter suffered a cardiac arrest. He was admitted to intensive care and with the help of the hospital staff has virtually made a full recovery. Peter received several scans in hospital and so set himself a challenge to help raise money for the Cardiac Appeal. Peter put together two teams, Team Ticker and Team Vital Spark, for our Lands’ End to John O’Groats virtual challenge. Starting on 1 May, Team Ticker covered the 874 miles in 17 days, with Team Vital Spark arriving just 48 hours later. Huge congratulations on completing the challenge and raising an incredible £1,700.

Huge thanks to Eric, who contacted us earlier this year wanting to sell his car to benefit our current fundraising. As a long term supporter of Scannappeal he trusted us to help him and to use his money wisely. We contacted Mark Duncan, owner of Aston Clinton based, acar2go, who kindly offered his support. Mark went along to visit Eric to see his car and made every step of the sale process as easy as possible. Within a few weeks the car had been sold raising £1,000 for Scannappeal.
Running the London Marathon has been a dream of Rachel’s since she got into long distance running 10 years ago. When the opportunity came round, she was quick to sign up and pledged to raise funds for Scannappeal. Rachel described the experience as ‘amazing’ and although an old injury slowed her down a little, she credits the crowd for helping to push her on and pass the finish line. Rachel’s hard work paid off with the reward of a finishers medal and over £2,000 raised for Scannappeal, amazing work!
Laughter is the best medicine We are incredibly grateful to Richard and The Potters Arms, Winchmore Hill, for choosing to support Scannappeal this summer. A specially pitched marquee on the village green became home to a weekend of comedy across the August bank holiday weekend. Raffle tickets sold in aid of Scannappeal raised a magnificent £1,130.

Chartridge Golf Club Our grateful appreciation goes to the Ladies Section at Chartridge Lane Golf Club for raising an incredible £2,064. Even though Cheryl Jeken’s captaincy year of 2020-21 was somewhat disturbed due to the pandemic it did not deter the ladies from fundraising. They raised money from the sale of raffle tickets and selling face coverings made by the lady members. Thank you to Cheryl for choosing to support Scannappeal in your captaincy year. Our thanks go to Marion who celebrated her 90th birthday on 18 June and was very keen for friends and family to give a donation to Scannappeal rather than giving her a birthday gift. Marion has lived locally all her life and is a big supporter of Scannappeal. She enjoyed celebrating her birthday with family, friends and neighbours and was thrilled to donate £600 to Scannappeal, extending her thanks to all her friends and family who were all so generous.
Spring raffle success Thanks to everyone who entered our Spring Raffle, a brand new fundraising initiative for 2021. We sold a staggering 7,438 tickets, raising just under £7,000. Scannappeal trustee, Phil Robertson, picked the winning tickets which saw first prize of £400 worth of Tesco shopping vouchers going to Jane from Hazelmere. Sincere thanks to our friends at Tesco High Wycombe Superstores and Expresses, for generously sponsoring all prizes.

Meet Amy Loss, who in her own words ‘previously despised running but wanted to help give something back to the hospital that saved my aunt and cousin's lives’. Amy registered to take part in the Olympic Park Half Marathon with the aim of raising £500. Amy explained how Scannappeal is very close to her heart as Stoke Mandeville hospital has provided amazing care to both her aunt and cousin and they have benefited tremendously from specialist scanning equipment. Not only did Amy complete the run in a very respectable 2hrs 35 minutes but she also smashed her target and raised a whopping £1,340.
Annual Golf Day
On Friday 25 June we enjoyed our Annual Golf Day at the stunning venue of Moor Park Golf Club. 16 teams played on the West Course, enjoying numerous views of the beautiful 17th century mansion house. The Team Stableford Competition had two winning teams, Fabulous Baxter Boys for the men and The HOWS for the ladies. Second place was awarded to local accountancy firm Seymour Taylor, and third to Houston and Hawkes. Over £13,000 was raised on the day.
Spanish cycling challenge
Supporter Sandra Sanjuan encouraged family friend, Chris, to raise funds for Scannappeal with his one man cycling trip. Starting from Santander in Northern Spain, Chris covered over 600 miles carrying a 36kg backpack, finishing in Cabanas de Tavira in Southern Portugal. Chris completed the trip in 3 weeks, cycling an average of 50 miles a day and raising £650. Huge well done Chris! Board games night
Walking success - Chiltern 50
We were thrilled to receive £150 from Wild Kite Bottleshop and Taproom in Great Missenden who hosted their first board games night. Participants were able to have a laugh, a drink, and play some great games with friends and family for a donation. Huge thank you to Wild Kite for supporting us.
Well done to Amina, Jacqui, Sam and Karen who took part in the Chiltern 50 event on 25 September. Amina and Jacqui walked in memory of Amina’s late husband Paul, with Amina sharing that walking and talking with Jacqui gave her courage and strength after her husband died. The friends decided to go the extra mile and raise money for Scannappeal, one of Paul's favourite local charities. A total of £2,261 was raised by the walkers, brilliant work ladies!
