and welcome to our latest edition of Update.
We continue to be overwhelmed by the support that we receive from the incredible community in Buckinghamshire and beyond. With your help our appeals are making a significant impact on our local NHS hospitals at a time when they need it most. In this edition we are delighted to announce we have completed the Bucks MRI Appeal. This equipment is going to make a substantial difference to the diagnosis and care of local patients, and none of this would have been possible without your support (see pages 4 and 5). We are thrilled to start taking bookings for our open garden season (pages 6-8). We will be hosting a variety of beautiful gardens with music and homemade cake and very much look forward to welcoming you along. Best wishes, and thank you for your continued support.

Our first ever spring raffle is launched this month supported by Tesco High Wycombe Superstores and Expresses. We hope you will consider purchasing some tickets to be in with a chance of winning some fantastic prizes. 20 YEARS DEDICATION
Scannappeal is fortunate to have a very strong team of volunteer Trustees who take overall responsibility of how the charity is lead. This year, we are delighted to be celebrating the dedication of one of our Trustees and current Chair, William Baxter CBE. William joined Scannappeal in 2001 and was appointed Chair in 2011. He remains as Chair today, ensuring that Scannappeal continues to fulfil its objectives. Not only does William bring a wealth of experience to the charity but he is also very supportive of all the Scannappeal team and his fellow Trustees. He is never afraid to roll up his sleeves and get stuck in, in fact we can’t remember him ever saying no! We are extremely privileged to still have William as Chair of Trustees, but more importantly as our supporter and friend. Thank you William, for your many years of dedication, here’s to many more! Appeal Success We are thrilled to share with you that within 24 months of launching our £1.5 million appeal to provide Bucks hospitals with two world class MRI scanners, that the target has been reached. It is with sincere thanks to the generosity of so many people that we have reached this significant milestone which will ensure patients attending Wycombe or Stoke Mandeville hospitals will have access to the very latest technology. Here is a reminder of what we have achieved together. March 2019

2020 was off to a fantastic start as the scanner arrived at Wycombe hospital. Approaching February, we achieved another incredible milestone as we reached £1 million.
March 2020
UK goes into the first national lockdown due to COVID-19 and our NHS staff are under immense pressure. The Scannappeal office temporarily closes its doors and many fundraising efforts were put on hold.

April 2020
Local business supporter, Rebellion Brewery, held their charity open weekend raising a staggering £65,000. Three months in and we saw the appeal go from strength to strength.

The Wycombe scanner becomes fully operational, enabling staff to move from the temporary scanner to their purpose built scanning suite.

The first milestone of £750,000 was reached and Scannappeal Trustees authorised the purchase of the first scanner for Wycombe hospital.
January 2020
The Bucks MRI Appeal was kicked off by Chairman, William Baxter CBE, hosting a private dinner where top chefs, Tom Kerridge, Ashley Palmer-Watts and Laurie Gear cooked for 100 people raising £30,000.
With just £80,000 left to raise we were generously gifted £40,000. Once again this was used as a matched funding incentive to help reach the final target.

Christmas wrapping, carol concerts, Santa floats and many other festive events, saw the pennies rolling in with our fundraising now focused on the second scanner.

Thanks to a local family who kindly donated £20,000 in memory of their son, the fundraising target of £1.5 million was reached. A second scanner will soon be installed at Stoke Mandeville hospital.
What an incredible result despite the personal and financial strains our community has suffered in the past 12 months. We are hugely grateful to the project team who have remained fully focused on preparing the new scanning suite despite restricted access to the hospital and an extended programme of building maintenance. Bucks hospitals are now on course to have the very best MRI equipment - we are proud and hope you are too! 4

A poignant gift
Taking on a challenge
We are in awe of the many supporters who took on personal challenges. From costal walks to marathons, triathlons to virtual cycle rides, we have been overwhelmed by each person’s determination. Supporter, Phil Richards MBE, challenged his colleagues across Tesco to put their best foot forward and between them raised over £100,000. Neil Macdonald, Chief Executive of Bucks Healthcare Trust, completed the London Big Half to raise £5,000 and local football commentator Phil Catchpole took on the London Marathon raising £3,500.
Community Response
A local family made a heartfelt donation of £20,000 in memory of their son Mark to complete the appeal. Mark, who recently passed away and was a great supporter of Scannappeal, remarked many times that he had scans with a machine donated by Scannappeal. Therefore, it’s a fitting tribute to him that his family have made this donation to a charity that Mark supported. Thank you to everyone who has chosen to remember a loved one by donating to Scannappeal.
The response from groups, clubs and businesses has been amazing. Including from Rotary clubs such as High Wycombe, Misbourne Matins and Aylesbury. Lions clubs including Amersham & Chesham, Tring and Winslow. Masonic lodges such as Hughenden, Stokenchurch and Tring. Various other clubs such as BARTS Society, Bucks Badgers, High Wycombe Soroptimists, and Kop Hill Climb. Support from supermarkets including Tesco, retailers such as John Lewis and restaurants including Pluma, Old Amersham. Thank you.
Trust in Scannappeal
Scannappeal has been fortunate to receive support from many charitable trusts. The Mulberry Trust committed funds towards the specialist breast coils needed for the MRI scanner. James Frost, Trustee, said, “The Mulberry Trust is an enthusiastic supporter of Scannappeal’s work in helping to bring state of the art equipment to Buckinghamshire’s NHS hospitals”. Since then, 25 other charitable trusts have also made significant donations including the Eranda Rothschild Foundation, Fullagar Charitable Trust, Heart of Bucks, King Cullimore Trust, Mobbs Memorial Trust, Shanly Foundation, The Roger and Jean Jefcoate Trust and the Wixamtree Trust.
These are just a few of the many ways your support has helped us achieve our fundraising target in just 24 months. Open garden programme 2021 Welcome to our 2021 open garden programme. In a year when we have all appreciated outdoor space more than ever before, we are delighted to bring you an exclusive selection of privately owned gardens. Each garden is inspiring in its own way and offers you the opportunity to see these beautiful spaces that are not normally open to the public. From kitchen gardens to rose gardens; manor houses and farmhouses; ponds and wildlife, there is so much to see and enjoy. Each garden is opening specially to raise funds for Scannappeal and with the addition of live music, plant sales and of course the much loved Scannappeal homemade cake stall, all you need to do is add family and friends to enjoy a perfect afternoon out. To open safely we are limiting numbers at each garden, but we are pleased to offer two allotted entrance times. Oak Lane, St Leonards, Bucks, HP23 6NN Open: Sunday 23 May | 2.00pm - 5.00pm Entrance times: 2.00pm & 2.45pm | Cost: £6 Enjoy a wander around the beautiful informal farmhouse garden belonging to Dundridge Manor, a Grade II listed Tudor farmhouse in the village of St Leonards, a small village in the Chiltern Hills. Just three miles from Wendover and four miles from Tring, the site has a Saxon moat which was once owned by Henry VIII. The Duchess of Salisbury is said to haunt the house. Entertainment on the day will be courtesy of clarinet group, 'Allsorts', and refreshments will be available to purchase throughout the afternoon.

Welcoming visitors at the entrance to the gardens is the grade II listed ship's figurehead from ‘Admiral Lord Howe’, the last wooden warship. The gardens contain a stunning selection of trees, shrubs and flowers, all set in beautiful countryside. Of particular mention are the established rose beds, ornamental and wildlife ponds, walled garden, fruit and vegetable garden, pool garden, a working green house and a newly planted orchard and wildflower meadow. Resident artist, Jennie Roberts, will have her studio open which will include pottery pieces such as birdbaths and ceramic vessels as well as an art trail.

Since then the current owner, with care and dedication throughout half a century, has created a strikingly colourful garden. Clever planting of herbaceous borders, mixed with perennials, shrubs and climbing plants around the three lawns lead down to a natural spring fed duck pond. This is a gorgeous historic garden based in the village of Cuddington, with unrestricted views of the Buckinghamshire countryside.

Set in the Chiltern Hills near Princes Risborough these are the private gardens of Lord Carrington, designed by Robert Adam. You will find a beautiful walled kitchen garden, herbaceous borders, water garden, parterres and many contemporary sculptures. At this time of year, the garden has an abundance of stunning roses. The gardens have recently undergone some major changes, with a hard landscape design by ‘Robert Myers’ incorporated within the old walled area. A pool garden with grass rich borders and a white and green theme. A kitchen cutting garden with a new glasshouse at its centre, a long oak arbored walk with old rambling roses. Beautiful Books
You might assume books donated to our bookshops have been gathering dust behind closed doors during lockdown, but this isn’t the case thanks to some new initiatives and creative thinking. Special edition books and collectables are now regularly being sold on eBay allowing us to make sure we get the very best value for ‘out of the ordinary’ books. Our bookshop doors opened once again on 12 April. Wycombe and Stoke Mandeville bookshops continue to use the honesty donation system meaning hospital visitors can grab a book and drop a £1 - we recognise many people now prefer not to use cash. So, with thanks to a recent donation from Heart of Bucks we will soon have ‘Tap Donate’ points in all our shops, making it even easier to shop with us. We can’t wait to welcome back our customers and volunteers, see you soon!

Fundraising family PLUMA
Cheers to Pluma Restaurant based in Old Amersham who joined forces with their wine supplier Alex, from Modest Merchant, to offer a virtual wine tasting in aid of Scannappeal. Wine lovers from 21 households enjoyed three different wines whilst Alex shared a wealth of knowledge on each vineyard, the history of the producers, regional points to note and of course the perfect food partner. Pluma donated £210 from the event which was kindly match funded by one of the guests who attended. Pluma are busy preparing for their reopening which will see outdoor dining from 12 April and restaurant dining from 17 May. www.plumarestaurants.com
JOLLY JANUARY QUIZ
Our sincere thanks go to local quiz masters and staunch charity supporters Hilary and Alan Coulson. The couple put together a fantastic Jolly January quiz helping to raise over £2,300. We were delighted to see 33 teams join us on Zoom, which equated to 100 households and 184 individuals – an amazing technological achievement! A challenging but fun night was had by all and a huge well done to Pinner Rotary Club Team, the overall winners on the night with a near perfect score.

Say hello to Grace (aged 8) and George (aged 5) Burgess. They have set themselves an epic challenge to walk 150 miles in support of our latest Cardiac Appeal, choosing to walk or cycle 15 miles a week for 10 weeks. They were inspired to take on the challenge after their Grandad received information about Scannappeal. AYLESBURY SWIM CLUB
Our thanks to members of Aylesbury & District Swim Club who chose Scannappeal as one of their charities of the year, donating a fantastic £500 in support of our MRI Appeal. The club is run by volunteers and exists to support local swimmers in achieving their goals. We wish all their athletes well in 2021, we bet you can’t wait to get back in the water!

In March we were thrilled to present the staff and customers of Widmer End supermarket with a certificate of thanks to commemorate 30 years of Scannappeal support. In the past 12 months the local community have become even more reliant on this wonderfully stocked local store and have been kindly dropping their small change in the Scannappeal collecting pot. RECTORY HOMES
Rectory Homes kindly provided a significant boost to the Cardiac Appeal by donating £5,000 through Heart of Bucks. This is specifically towards a specialist 3D probe to work with the new ultrasound system. Rectory Homes have been fantastic supporters of Scannappeal for a number of years having already contributed to our projects for the Breast Care Unit and the dermatology department and we are very grateful for their continued assistance.
We were delighted to be told that both the incoming men’s and lady captain at Chartridge Park Golf Club had chosen to adopt Scannappeal for their captaincy year in 2020. Just as they were getting started the impact of COVID-19 hit and it has been extremely difficult for them to fundraise and collect any donations. Various planned days have been cancelled such as the Captains home and away day and the Presidents day so they have set up a JustGiving page to receive donations from the Club members. We are sad that they have not been able to enjoy their captaincy year as planned but so grateful for their continued support.
