Stoneleigh-Burnham EcoLetter Coral Bleaching Ruby Rowan-Decker
Media Used: Embroidery thread, various shapes of glass beads, plastic beads, shells, This piece is a textile representation of coral bleaching. Although seemingly beautiful, my piece shares a painful message: the coral fades from bright colors to white to show the dying coral. The range of textures and colors is loosely inspired by Emily Botelho. The beads range from white to bright red, to capture the loss of color that the coral undergoes. This piece shows more than a call to end coral bleaching, but also a recognition of how beauty can conceal pain beneath its surface.
The Cry of the Sea Turtle Ayumi Hayashi
Media: Embroidery strings, watercolor, acrylic paint, beads, shiny fabric, fabric, pearls, and yarn. This piece shows a sea turtle trapped in ocean trash, crying but still swimming toward the shining surface above. I wanted to express the cry of sea creatures suffering from human-caused ocean pollution and remind viewers of our responsibility to protect them. I used shiny fabric to show light which reflects on the ocean and embroidery strings for the turtle’s detailed texture.
