ADVANCED RESEARCH SCHOLARS

The Advanced Research Scholars program is a schoolwide research initiative across STEM, humanities, arts, and emerging technologies that allows students to explore their academic interests through real-world research opportunities in all academic disciplines Students undertake original research, creative scholarship, or advanced design projects under the mentorship of SBS faculty, culminating in a public defense of their work.

Whether students wish to pursue a genetics research project in a laboratory under a mentor, analyze the moral philosophy of Dante’s Inferno, design a rocket engine, or create an art portfolio on realism, SBS offers students the opportunity to pursue their research passion as a complement to our core curriculum, which also distinguishes them in the college search process.

Students enroll in the Advanced Research Scholars program as a weekly seminar under the mentorship of a faculty advisor in a small-class setting All students in the Advanced Research Scholars program follow a structured research process similar to university honors programs:

1 Proposal: Students develop a formal research proposal under the guidance of a faculty mentor

2 Investigation: Students conduct original research, design experiments, build prototypes, or develop creative work

3 Scholarly Production: Students produce a research project, engineering design, AI system, or artistic portfolio

4 Public Defense: Students present and defend their work at a faculty symposium

ADVANCED SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH

SBS offers a robust Advanced Scientific Research program under the leadership of our Science Department, including three faculty members who hold PhDs in the sciences. Students undertake a yearlong, mentored research project in a small-class setting, leveraging the school’s facilities and resources throughout the process Senior students with an outside internship have the opportunity to attend their internship each week during the academic day After developing a formal research proposal, conducting a review of peer-reviewed literature and relevant methodologies, students carry out their investigation and produce a research paper and presentation They conclude the year by defending their work at a culminating symposium

Since 2022, students in the Advanced Scientific Research program have earned accolades such as: the Regeneron Science Talent Search, the Partners for the Future program at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory the Student Partnerships for Adv Research and Knowledge Program at Brookhaven National Lab the High School Research Program at Brookhaven National Lab multiple student co-authors in scientific journals with their mentor scientists multiple research internships with professors at nearby universities such as Columbia and Stony Brook. Admission to prestigious colleges such as CalTech, MIT, Stanford, Princeton, and more

ADVANCED MATH SCHOLARS

SBS offers some of the most advanced math courses available at the secondary school level, including a research-focused math course for our most advanced students To be eligible for this advanced math research program, students must complete Advanced Linear Algebra or Advanced Multivariable Calculus, both of which are accredited by Stony Brook University through the ACE program. SBS has 70+ students in math above AP Calculus BC and offers multiple yearlong courses for these students.

In the Advanced Topics in Mathematics course, students compose a research project in small groups and defend their findings to the math faculty in a symposium.

SBS’s advanced math courses include:

Advanced Linear Algebra*

Advanced Multivariable Calculus*

Advanced Mathematical Logic

Advanced Differential Equations

Advanced Topics in Mathematics

ADV. ENGINEERING, INNOVATION, & DESIGN

The STEM sequence at SBS culminates in research-driven, project-based capstone seminar in engineering and design led by our world-class STEM faculty. Students move beyond traditional coursework to tackle ambitious engineering challenges, designing, building, and testing original projects in fields such as aerospace, computer science, rocketry, and advanced manufacturing Working individually and in teams, students apply the full engineering design process - from concept and modeling to fabrication and launch - developing the technical skill, creativity, and perseverance that define real-world innovation

In 2024, our EID program became one of only 15 secondary schools invited to participate in the prestigious NASA Student Launch Initiative, a competition typically reserved for universities Past student work has also included designing an aeroponics experiment for the International Space Station and producing laser-cut face masks during the COVID-19 pandemic that were featured on Fox News, ABC, and Newsday.

ADV. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE LAB

The Advanced Artificial Intelligence Lab is a research seminar for students interested in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and the technologies shaping the future Under the mentorship of a faculty member, students develop project-based AI solutions to real-world problems while collaborating in a focused laboratory setting. The seminar provides the resources and guidance needed to design, test, and refine applied AI projects while learning to evaluate models, interpret results, and consider the ethical implications of intelligent technologies

Through iterative development, peer feedback, and technical presentation, students gain practical experience using modern AI tools while cultivating the habits of experimentation, critique, and revision that define serious technological research The course prepares students for a world increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence and equips them with the skills and understanding needed for further study in AI and related fields Students conclude by defending their projects before a panel of faculty

ADVANCED HUMANITIES RESEARCH

The Advanced Humanities Research program is a rigorous research seminar designed for students with research interests in world languages, literature, history, economics, philosophy, and beyond This research seminar provides students the resources and support to compose a rigorous research paper alongside other students in an Oxford tutorial setting. This seminar provides students the resources and support to compose a rigorous research paper in preparation for succeeding in research at the university level Students conclude their research project by defending their research at a symposium to the humanities faculty

ADVANCED ARTS SCHOLARS

The Visual and Performing Arts students at SBS may enroll in this arts seminar to undertake a yearlong project in a media of choice using performative research Students choose their interdisciplinary research topics after extensive personal and cultural investigation, and compile a portfolio of their work complete with a summary of their research. The seminar concludes with an exhibition and public review of student work
