For the 98th year, the Santa Barbara Fiesta Stock Horse Show at the Earl Warren Showgrounds kicked off on Thursday. The event brings together the best horsemen and women from Santa Barbara, Ventura and San Luis Obispo counties as they show off their riding and roping skills.

The public is welcome to come watch competitors in the stock horse classes, which are free to attend. Today the event continues as the Fiesta Stock Horse Show and Rodeo, and it will continue through Sunday. Weekend rodeo performance tickets are available for $15-30 at sbfiestarodeo.org/ tickets. Father Larry Gosselin felt moved by the spirit. The Fiesta spirit. That’s why he was walking down State Street the other day and told everyone he saw, “Viva la Fiesta! Viva la Fiesta!”

“I said this to tourists,” Father Gosselin told the large audience Thursday morning during his sermon at La Misa del Presidente Mass of Thanksgiving at the Santa Barbara Mission. “They looked at me, like, ‘Who is this guy?’ What is he talking about?’ ” Father Gosselin said. Students built and launched rockets this week as part of the Rocketing Into High School 2022 Summer Experience in the Santa Maria Joint Union High School District. The free event took place Tuesday and Wednesday at Pioneer Valley High School. Lunch was provided both days. The two-day adventure featured science teachers and students exploring the wonders of science and participating in the Next Generation Science Standards Engineering Design Challenge. The experience involved students building rockets for the competition. Incoming students at Ernest Righetti High School, Pioneer Valley High School and Santa Maria High School on Wednesday launched Engineering Design Challenge Rockets during the event’s final day. “It was a really good event, the teachers were great and the kids were even better. It was a fun two days,” Rebecca Wingerden, the Righetti science teacher who coordinated the event, told the News-Press.

“We had about 40 students sign up, but we only had about 20 actually show up,” Ms. Wingerden told the News-Press. This event was started in 2019, but this is the first time that the event has been held since 2019 due to the pandemic. “It was really fun. It was a great group of teachers running the small groups building the rockets,” said Ms. Wingerden. “For this activity, I am doing all of the facilitating and coordination. It was great to see the kids and see them interact and make new friends.” The News-Press asked Ms. Wingerden about the NGSS Engineering Design Challenge. “With the state standards, which were approved in 2013, the program focuses on the inquiry model. Students focus on asking and answering questions,” she explained. “It gives students the opportunity to build and test rockets to see how far and high they can go. It’s a great way to learn. Police presence increased during Fiesta SANTA BARBARA — The Santa Barbara Police Department would like to remind the community about important information and safety topics during Fiesta. Because of the large influx of people into the city, additional officers have been assigned to foot patrols along the State Street Promenade, Funk Zone and waterfront. Additional traffic patrols have started and will run through Sunday. These officers’ primary duty is to prevent collisions and DUIs throughout the week, said Sgt. Ethan Ragsdale, the police department’s public information officer. “We request that all those driving, bicycling, and walking within the community abide by traffic laws,” Sgt. Ragsdale said. “Please have a sober driver, utilize taxis, or use ride-share services if you are consuming alcoholic beverages. If you see an impaired

driver, call 9-1-1.” Though State Street has been reconfigured into a promenade, open alcoholic beverages remain prohibited on any public street, sidewalk, parking lot or alley. Citations could be issued as a result of possessing an open alcoholic beverage or consuming an alcoholic beverage in public. Smoking and electronic cigarettes are also prohibited in the city. All parking enforcement rules and regulations including timed zones and red zones will be enforced throughout the city during the rest of Fiesta. Police also remind people to watch for road closures, in effect because of today’s Historical Parade and Saturday’s Children’s Parade.

SANTA BARBARA — With large numbers out and about celebrating this week’s Fiesta, there’s the potential for an uptick in COVID-19 cases, according to the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department. “As with other events and holidays that bring opportunities for large gatherings, our community may experience an uptick in cases following this week’s events. However, there are many prevention strategies community members can use to protect themselves and others,” Jackie Ruiz, the public information officer for the health department, told the News-Press in an email. “Well-fitted masks are highly recommended in public, indoor areas and crowded outdoor areas,” Ms. Ruiz said. “Stay home if you are sick,” she added. “Practice excellent hand hygiene and avoid touching your mouth, nose, or eyes. Monitor for any symptoms after attending large gatherings and get tested if you do begin experiencing symptoms.”

which broke out at approximately 2:15 p.m. Friday, in the 1700 block of North Glen Annie Road. The fire is approximately seven acres and is burning uphill in Los Padres National Forest. County Fire said Firefighters are making great progress on the Annie Fire, which is estimated to be less than 30 acres. The fire is burning uphill away from Goleta. No homes are threatened, and there have not been any evacuation orders issued. Numerous air and ground resources are being used in this effort. Officials expect sell-out crowds tonight and Saturday HORSE SHOW

Stock horses classes started Thursday morning and ran through most of the day. The stock horse classes continue today starting at 8 a.m. Today’s classes will include junior roping, keyhole and single stake up to age 17 with several age categories for both boys and girls. The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association starts this evening and runs through Sunday. The rodeo begins at 7:30 tonight and Saturday night, and continues at 2 p.m. Sunday. The rodeo is a ticketed event. Some tickets are available for purchase at the showgrounds box office, which opens at 10 a.m. “Friday and Saturday nights will likely be sell outs,” Josiah Jenkins, rodeo chair, told the News-Press Thursday. Rodeo events include: saddle bronc, bareback, women’s barrel racing, ladies breakaway, team

penning, bull riding and steer wrestling, according to Mr. Jenkins. “Once again the faithful and prized friends of men enjoyed the importance and respect that was theirs in the real Old Spanish Days when a good horse was a man’s right hand without which he was powerless to cope with the distances and problems of his frontier environment,” according to a 1937 edition of the News-Press. Mr. Jenkins discussed the history further. “It’s been a part of the Fiesta since 1924 when everything was at Pershing Park,” he said. “When the Earl Warren Showground opened, the stock horse show was moved to this location, and the professional rodeo was added. “It’s a good cultural event,” he said. “It brings the people from the ranching life and country that do this as living together to compete and see who is the best that day. For the first time since 2019, the Fiesta parade is back. The Old Spanish Days tradition will proceed down a new route on Cabrillo Boulevard, beginning at noon today. Here’s the Fiesta schedule.

Up in the loft above the historic sanctuary were singers and string and wind musicians, adding a distinctive Latino flavor as the first full-fledged Fiesta since 2019 continued. The service, which ended with communion, featured solemn moments of prayer and heartfelt music, but as pointed out in newspaper style books, Masses are celebrated. That’s the correct term. And this one certainly was celebrated, with Old Spanish Days and audience members alike wearing Fiesta costumes and, regardless of what clothes they had on, wearing smiles. Certainly Father Gosselin was wearing his smile, and he addressed the importance of family, community and love. “Jesus said we are equal,”

Father Gosselin said. Later the priest told about shopping he did during a recent trip to Rochester, Minn. He held a little handmade broom he bought and told the audience about what he had learned: “Be good to your broom. It will sweep for you for years. You should never use this broom for flight or fight.” The audience laughed. “Halloween, you know?” Father Gosselin said, referring to witches and their brooms. But the priest said a new broom can bring good luck in a new house. In that spirit, he walked down from his pulpit and came

Venice Dettamanti passed away peacefully at home on July 25, 2022. Venice was born in Lompoc on August 22, 1923, to Henry and Elizabeth Grossi. She graduated from Lompoc High School in 1942 and married her husband Henry Dettamanti in 1944. She was a lifelong resident of the Lompoc Valley and a member of many organizations. She was a very dedicated community member. Venice loved to share about her Italian culture and was also a proud patriotic American. Venice loved cooking and sharing her recipes with others. She also enjoyed writing, painting, traveling and spending time with her many relatives. She is survived by her daughter Elizabeth Watkins (John) and her grandchildren Shane Watkins (Amy), Jeff Watkins (Sarah), Angelina Dettamanti and Mario Dettamanti (Kate). She also had many great-grandchildren Ashley, Amber, Evie, Zoe, Rhett, and baby Henry. She was preceded in death by her husband Henry and son Ben. She lived a very full life and will always be remembered for her quick wit and loving personality. Excavation of hydrocarbon-impacted material surrounding the oil well sump is proposed to extend to a maximum depth of approximately 12 feet below ground surface (bgs) within an approximately 27,500 sf work area surrounded by a temporary chain link fence. The historical oilfield lease road will be removed to an approximate depth of 12 inches bgs. Hydrocarbonimpacted soil may be temporarily stockpiled onsite. The project will result in approximately 1,700 cubic yards of impacted soil to be removed and replaced with clean fill. Following excavation, inspection and verification sampling will be performed. Impacted soil will be excavated, loaded into dump trucks, and transported off-site to the Santa Maria Landfill, a California Licensed waste disposal facility, for disposal. Clean fill will be placed in lifts and compacted. Imported backfill and clean excavated soil (soil above the impacted zone) may be stockpiled onsite and re-used as backfill. The project will include approximately 128 truck trips for export material and 128 truck trips for import material. The property will be restored to existing conditions by grading the area to as near original grade as possible, seeding the excavated area as needed, and removing the temporary fencing. The time to prepare the site, excavate hydrocarbon-impacted soils, backfilling the excavation area and restoring the Site is expected to take approximately 4 to 5 weeks. The total area of disturbance of the excavation of the sump and lease road is approximately 0.88 acres. Environmental Review Findings: P&D has prepared a Draft Negative Declaration (ND) (22NGD00000-00008) pursuant to Section 15073 of the State Guidelines for the Implementation of the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and the County of Santa Barbara Guidelines for the Implementation of CEQA. P&D’s issuance of a ND affirms our opinion that any significant adverse impacts associated with the proposed project may be reduced to a less than significant level with the adoption of mitigation measures and that the project does not require the preparation of an Environmental Impact Report (EIR). The ND prepared for the project identifies and discusses potential impacts, mitigation measures, residual impacts and monitoring requirements for identified subject areas.
