Alessia Patisserie
European Pastries with Santa Barbara Heart
Since opening in 2021, Alessia Patisserie & Cafe has become a much-loved destination for artisanal pastries and quality breakfast and lunch fare in downtown Santa Barbara. Founded by Santa Barbara native Alessia Guehr, the patisserie is more than a bakery—it’s the culmination of a lifetime spent immersed in the culinary arts.
The daughter of two German-born Santa Barbara restaurateurs, Guehr grew up in her parents’ restaurants, where she cultivated a deep passion for food. She began her career at the Four Seasons Resort The Biltmore, where a summer job evolved into a full-time role as assistant pastry chef. After nearly a decade there, Guehr further honed her skills at Thomas Keller’s Bouchon Bakery in Napa and worked under acclaimed bakers in San Francisco and Las Vegas before returning to Santa Barbara.
Today, Guehr channels her heritage and experience into her eponymous bakery and cafe in the vibrant Presidio Neighborhood. “Between finding the right location and designing and building the space, it took four years to bring Alessia to life, but it was worth every step,” says Guehr. “The Presidio is deeply rooted in Santa Barbara’s history, and community and craftsmanship are still valued here. As a true local, it’s been the ideal spot for me to build something meaningful for my community.”
Drawing on European traditions with refined artistry, her patisserie has earned praise for hand-crafted pastries that are as visually delightful as the inviting setting. Small-batch favorites, including the Pistachio Croissant and savory Ham & Gruyere Croissant may steal the spotlight, but Alessia’s breakfast and lunch menus shine just as bright. From French Omelets and Avocado Toast to Croque Monsieur, Salmon Niçoise Salad and High Tea delicacies, each dish is crafted with precision and care.
“My goal has always been to offer incredible pastries and food in an elevated yet warm setting—a place where people feel just as welcome grabbing a croissant after the gym as they would celebrating a special occasion,” adds Guehr, who works six days a week at her bakery. “I’m committed to my vision, my staff and my community, and I love being able to bring people happiness through consistently excellent food.”

Ospi Montecito
OInspired Cal-Italian Fare
ccupying a corner space in The Post, a collection of specialty shops and merchants, Ospi Montecito has captivated locals and visitors with its Cal-Italian fare and modern design, delivering a dining experience that’s equal parts familial and refined. Short for the Italian word for “hospitality,” Ospi is the vision of chef and owner Jackson Kalb and his wife, Melissa, who expanded their successful California restaurant concept to Montecito in 2025.
At Ospi, Kalb blends Italian comfort food with modern sensibilities, each dish highlighting mouthwatering flavors and thoughtfully sourced local and imported ingredients. “We pride ourselves on using exceptional ingredients,” he shares. “For example, the flour we use for our scratch-made pastas comes from small, family-run wheat farms that grow premium, regenerative and sustainable flour.”
When it comes to pasta, Chef Kalb calls the Spicy Rigatoni “a must-have,” while the Cavatelli with pork sausage and black truffles never disappoints. Beyond pasta, the menu features craveable dishes from appetizers and salads to
Roman-style pizze and seafood entrees. Exclusive to dinner, the Chicken Parm is another standout—a delightful rendition of the classic, which took Kalb over 100 hours to develop. Unique to this location is weekday breakfast, featuring sweet and savory offerings, with expanded options during weekend brunch. Private dining and catering are also available, with prix fixe and à la carte menus.
Elevating the fare are the chic indoor and outdoor spaces, thoughtfully conceived to blend old world elegance with coastal flair. “Every detail, down to the custom ceiling panels that absorb acoustics, was painstakingly chosen to make the most comfortable dining experience for our guests,” explains Kalb. Inside, an attractive palette of sea greens, sand tones and brass accents add visual appeal to the space, anchored by a stunning custom horseshoe bar, while the sundappled, wraparound patio further adds to the inviting setting.
“Ospi is upscale enough to celebrate a birthday, anniversary or special life event, but casual enough to stop in after a bike ride along the coast with friends or family,” adds Kalb. “We want it to feel as though you're being invited to your best friend's dinner party, so we avoid stuffiness at all costs.”

A Neighborhood Gem for Families & Friends Lilac Montecito
Now celebrating two years along Coast Village Road, Lilac Montecito has become a go-to spot for friends, couples and families to gather for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Here, fresh, seasonal California-meets-French cuisine and a charming setting speak for themselves—so much so that many guests may not even realize that Lilac, the full-service extension of the beloved Lilac Pâtisserie in downtown Santa Barbara, is entirely gluten-free.
Lilac is the vision of Gillian Muralles, a culinary school-trained pastry chef diagnosed with celiac disease in 2002, and her husband, Alam Muralles, who has a background in full-service restaurants. After the success of their pâtisserie, the couple set out to create an extended dining experience rooted in quality food and community. When they discovered the Montecito space, it “immediately felt like home,” says Gillian, allowing them to evolve their concept into an elevated bistro experience.
From day one, the husband-and-wife team has operated with a simple philosophy: to serve food that meets the highest standards for taste, texture and presentation. “While we’re known as a gluten-free café, we never put anything on the menu unless we believe it’s just as good—if not better—than
its traditional counterpart,” explains Gillian. “We want every guest to feel confident they’ll enjoy a delicious meal and thoughtful service, whether or not they have dietary needs.”
Popular dishes include the Eggs Benedict, Chicken Paillard and dinner favorites such as the Chicken Marsala, Coq au Vin and hand-rolled Fettuccine Alfredo. Many recipes, explains Gillian, draw inspiration from her childhood and the nourishing meals that sparked her love of cooking. “I learned early on that food is about discovery, creativity and bringing people together, and we aim to bring that same spirit into the bistro,” she adds.
Lilac Montecito now offers happy hour Tuesday - Sunday, featuring elevated appetizers, kid-friendly favorites and beer and wine specials. The casually-chic dining room is also ideal for private gatherings of up to 50 guests, with flexible options for buffets, family-style dining and custom plated menus. “Whether stopping by for brunch after a tennis match, grabbing a bite after school pick-ups, enjoying a weeknight meal or hosting an intimate milestone dinner, our goal is to create a space that feels special but never intimidating,” says Gillian. “A place where guests can enjoy excellent food, warm hospitality and a sense of home.”

THE URBAN WINE TRAIL
SANTA BARBARA is where the mountains meet the ocean, and a world-class, no-car-required wine tasting experience is just a few steps in almost any direction. Given Santa Barbara’s proximity to the Santa Ynez Valley and the Santa Maria Valley, two of the best wine regions in the US, it’s no wonder that a variety of wineries and tasting rooms now populate hot downtown spots, the perennially poppin’ Funk Zone, and other bustling nearby neighborhoods. And thanks to the Santa Barbara Urban Wine Trail, navigating the wealth of options has never been easier.
WINE TASTING in Santa Barbara dates back to 1962, when Santa Barbara Winery first opened its doors in a warehouse near the city’s oceanfront. In 2005, the Trail began to organically develop around this forerunner, and by 2007, eight of the original downtown wineries joined forces to officially create the Santa Barbara Urban Wine Trail. The goal was to offer everyone
from oenophiles on serious tasting missions to novices simply looking for a day of fun the opportunity to learn about and taste the wide range of varietals and styles crafted from the county’s best vineyards.
THE TRAIL is populated with dozens of wineries and tasting rooms sprinkled throughout several districts, each with a distinct personality and vibe: the iconic Funk Zone, the historic Presidio Neighborhood, the Haley Corridor, and to the north in the “Goodland” of Goleta, and to the south in upscale Montecito and laid-back Summerland. Explore the Trail on foot, hop on a shuttle, cruise it by bike or catch a ride-share. Along the way, be sure to stop and sample the eclectic assortment of restaurants, breweries, cocktail joints, art galleries, coffee bars, retail shops and even a distillery.

Ace Rivington
A FULL HOUSE OF DELUXE DENIM
There’s no place quite like the men’s lifestyle store Ace Rivington, where founder Beau Lawrence showcases his denim and menswear brand and where customer service is king. Here you’ll discover an assortment of premium denim, from classic straight cuts to slim tapers, all designed in California. The washes—built around authentic vintage looks, colors and inspiration—range from black, dark and medium tones to specialty limitededition offerings like embellished Archive Selvedge. Cut from sustainable, Italian-milled Candiani denim, Ace Rivington jeans are made with the most earth conscious methods possible like limited water and energy consumption and safe conditions for factory workers.
Every pair of jeans comes with full tailoring and is backed by a lifetime warranty. Rounding out the high-quality collection are Signature Homespun French Terry sweatshirts, classic and branded graphic tees, plaid flannel, corduroy and chambray button-ups. Sitting alongside the branded goods is a tight edit of outside designers—
think Italian-made loafers, Chelsea boots, printed bandanas, belts, socks and more—plus items like cocktail mixers, cologne, candles, pocket knives and other giftable goods for guys.
The flagship shop serves as one of the anchors of the historic shopping center La Arcada Plaza, at the corner of State and Figueroa streets in downtown Santa Barbara. A great soundtrack and comfortable seating invite guests to relax and linger while they shop.
We caught up with Beau for a quick five-minute interview at the shop during the launch party for a new ad campaign featuring a lineup of notably cool local personalities styled in the brand’s signature denim. THE BRAND
Ace Rivington pairs exceptional service with responsibly made premium goods, emphasizing quality materials, personal relationships and a deep commitment to the local community.
QUICK Q&A W/ BEAU LAWRENCE
What is the inspiration behind the brand?
Ace Rivington is a character I made up who embodies the spirit of adventure found in travel, food, culture and escape. The thread ties Ace Rivington's story and our collection together is effortless style—something very to achieve, but iconic when done right.
INSPIRED STAPLES
The flagship store’s selection can outfit men from head to toe with classic tees, sweatshirts, jeans, boots and shoes designed to work together—creating a seamless, stylish, no-brainer wardrobe.
BEYOND DENIM
Completing the well-crafted lineup are collectible graphic tees and timeless button-ups in rugged plaid flannel and corduroy. Alongside the in-house pieces is a curated selection of gift-worthy goods from outside makers, including clean-burning, hand-poured soy candles and easy-to-pack roller ball colognes for men on the move.
From launch to now, how has Ace Rivington refined its point of view — and what remains non-negotiable in the brand’s DNA?
wife and I launched Ace Rivington on Kickstarter back in 2013 with our Homespun French Terry Sweatshirt. That fueled our deep dive into a full menswear collection that has since focused more and more on the best tailored jeans that we can produce. Best-inclass Italian denim and world-class flannels (that make our customers look like movie stars) are what we're all about.
After decades in the game, what continues to drive your creativity?
Since the beginning of my denim design career at Guess Jeans in 2000, I've been inspired by real vintage and naturally worn goods. Coming up with ways to create high-quality products that look authentic, fit a broad range of body types and have just the right amount of style without trying too hard gives me endless creative challenges each season. I love every minute.
Your custom tailoring sets you apart. What’s the philosophy behind your fit, and what separates great denim from just good denim? Everyone deserves tailoring. From tall to short, and everywhere in between...jeans that fit just right make you feel and look great. Denim should be made to last, just like it was in the 1980s and earlier. Built with the best cotton, thread and trims available and backed by a lifetime warranty, that's what makes a great pair of jeans.
What’s the most rewarding part of owning a business in the heart of downtown Santa Barbara?
"Where did you have dinner last night...and where are you having dinner tonight?" That's my first question for just about everyone who walks through our door. Knowing we have a town full of incredible creators (food, art, music and otherwise) who care about their craft as much as we do is what makes being here so special.

Waterhouse Gallery
A CURATED ESCAPE
Waterhouse Gallery, with locations in Downtown Santa Barbara and Montecito, showcases an exceptional collection of work by acclaimed local artist Ralph Waterhouse, alongside some of the finest painters from Santa Barbara and across the Western states. Dreamy coastal landscapes, meandering frontcountry scenes and iconic historic landmarks draw in curious passersby, while interior designers and longtime locals return again and again in search of the perfect piece for clients or to add to their own collections.
With more than 42 years in the fine art world, husband-and-wife owners Ralph and Diane Waterhouse have built not only a successful business and devoted following, but also a reputation as experts in contemporary realism and Impressionism, including works in the California Plein Air tradition. Landscapes, seascapes and still lifes hang comfortably alongside figurative drawings and urban cityscapes—a richly varied collection of truly covetable, collector-level works.
Like most elevated galleries, Waterhouse is filled with museum-worthy paintings. Unlike many of its peers, however, there’s no hint of pretense—only a warm welcome and, if you’re lucky, a greeting from the gallery’s resident shop dog, Kane. We recently visited the Coast Village Road location and spoke with Diane about the gallery’s history, her advice on investing in art and what continues to inspire their passion and enduring success
What inspired the creation of Waterhouse Gallery?
Ralph and I met on a blind date in 1983, fell instantly in love, and 42 years ago decided to open a gallery in Santa Barbara because I didn't want to move to England, where Ralph had his own gallery in the Lake District.
How does the gallery's core mission inform your curatorial approach?
We love traditional contemporary art, plein air, portraits and Early California paintings, so we wanted our gallery to reflect what we love. Our home is a homage to art collecting, as it is our passion. We probably have 200 paintings in our personal collection.
What qualities in an artist spark your interest or make you say "yes"?
I've seen so many paintings over the past four decades, and I have to say that when I see certain paintings, I just know they will work for our genre.
As life and business partners with two gallery locations, how do you and your husband spend your free time?
We are deeply involved in the local art community. I have been on the Santa Barbara Museum of Art Women's Board for 16 years. I was on the Board of the Santa Barbara Historical Museum for two terms, and I'm currently on the Board of the Art Foundation. Ralph and I are the Chapter Chairs for the California Art Club. I was involved with the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History for many years as curator of Art Walk and, more recently, The Artist's Table.
What advice do you give clients who are interested in buying/investing in fine art? Art is personal. People should buy from their hearts. Paintings are an investment in joy that brings 24-hour pleasure. No one ever knows if a painting will appreciate, but if you are attached to it, you won't ever sell it.
I love telling first-time clients to look at as much art as they can. Not all paintings speak to you, but if there’s one you can't get out of your mind, you should definitely take it home!

Blood Orange Bars with Cardamom Maple Cream
Add a burst of sunshine to summer entertaining with these effortlessly elegant, make-ahead bars. Silky blood orange curd nestles into a warmly spiced gingersnap crust, crowned with airy yogurt–cardamom maple cream and fresh citrus. Bright, beautifully balanced and best served chilled, they’re a refreshing finale to any alfresco gathering. Swap in seasonal citrus for a year-round crowd-pleaser that’s always guest-list ready.
Ingredients
Gingersnap Crust
14 ounces gingersnap cookies
6 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
Nonstick spray (or coconut oil spray)
Blood Orange Curd Filling
2 large eggs
2 large egg yolks
1/3 cup granulated sugar (see note)
½ cup fresh blood orange juice
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
Zest of 1 blood orange
Pinch of salt
6 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cubed
Yogurt Cardamom Maple Cream
1 cup heavy cream
½ teaspoon ground cardamom
2 tablespoons pure maple syrup
½ teaspoon orange blossom water
2 heaping tablespoons thick Greek yogurt
Note:
Use closer to 1/3 cup sugar for sweet citrus like blood orange; increase toward ½ cup for tart varieties such as lemon or lime.
Make-Ahead Tip:
The bars can be prepared up to two days in advance and kept refrigerated. Add the cream and garnish just before serving.
About Ayda Robana
Instructions
1. Build the Crust
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Pulse the gingersnaps in a food processor until finely ground. With the motor running, drizzle in the melted butter until the mixture resembles damp sand.
Using a non-stick spray, lightly coat a 4½ x 14-inch tart pan with a removable bottom. Press the crumb mixture firmly and evenly into the base and slightly up the sides. Bake for 10 minutes. Let cool completely while you prepare the curd.
2. Make the Citrus Curd
In a heatproof bowl, whisk together the eggs, egg yolks, sugar, blood orange juice, lemon juice, zest and salt until smooth. Set the bowl over a medium saucepan of gently simmering water to create a bain-marie (double boiler). The water should not touch the bowl.
Cook, whisking constantly, for 10–12 minutes until thick enough to coat the back of a spoon. The mixture will foam at first; the foam subsides as it thickens. Remove from heat and stir in the cold butter, a few cubes at a time, until smooth and glossy. For an ultra-silky finish, strain through a fine-mesh sieve.
3. Bake & Chill
Reduce oven temperature to 325°F (165°C). Pour the warm curd into the cooled crust and bake for 10–12 minutes, until just set, but still slightly soft in the center. Cool at room temperature, then cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, until fully chilled and firm.
4. Whip the Cream
Whip the heavy cream (in a stand mixer or with a hand mixer) until it just begins to thicken. Add the cardamom, maple syrup and orange blossom water, and continue whipping until light and airy. Gently fold in the Greek yogurt until just incorporated to keep the mixture light and airy.
5. Finish & Serve
Spread or pipe the yogurt–cardamom maple cream over the chilled tart. Top with blood orange segments, a twist of zest or edible flowers for a garden-party finish. Slice with a sharp knife (wiping between cuts) and serve chilled with a nice sparkling rosé.
