A FAMILY HISTORY OF SERVICE Staunton?s City Council recently announced plans to name the council chambers after former Staunton vice- mayor Rita Wilson. She was the first African- American woman elected to council in the city?s history. Wilson died in 2016 at 75- years- old, leaving a legacy marked by service. Part of that service was on the Staunton- Augusta Family YMCA?s board of directors. It?s a seat that just happens to be currently filled by her grandson, Tony Davenport. ?It feels good to follow in her footsteps,? Davenport said. ?A lot of people just think the YMCA is a place you go and lift weights and run on the treadmill, but it?s so much more than that. It also feels good, because the YMCA does so much for the community as far as childcare and Parkinson?s (disease). It?s just a good, safe place for people to come and pool their resources together for the betterment of their neighbor. That?s what I like about the YMCA.
Wilson?s entire life has been devoted to service. In addition to the YMCA board of directors, she served on the city council for 16 years from 1992 to 2008, and she also found service opportunities with The Staunton Rotary Club, Shenandoah Kiwanis, NAACP, the Staunton Senior Center, the Staunton- Augusta Family YMCA board of directors, the Staunton School Board and Frontier Culture Museum?s Board of Directors. Davenport?s life has also been marked by service. His grandmother would certainly be proud. ?One of my first jobs ever was a YMCA camp counselor right out of college,? Davenport said. ?I have still some relationships with some of the kids I was a camp counselor for back then. Seeing them grow and be able to mentor them just shows how it takes a village to raise a child, and how the YMCA contributes to that with daycare, day camps and then helping them be healthy all throughout life.?
HILLARY GETSEY: TRANSITIONING TO A NEW ROLE It?s bigger than a hobby but smaller than a nonprofit. The word that Hillary Getsey used to describe Charlie?s Books is project. Getsey routinely grabs a stack of popular children?s books ? titles such as Eric Carle?s The Foolish Tortoise and Tomie dePaola?Strega Nona?s Harvest ? and fills the bookshelves of kid- focused non- profit organizations in the area. Not only is it a project ? one with deep personal meaning to Getsey ? Charlie?s Books also represents a promise kept. ?That is just my private little initiative,? Getsey said. ?It was born out of my sister losing a child during pregnancy. That was super hard on our whole family. We were actively looking for ways to support my sister and her husband through that grief.? Her sister offered the family a suggestion. ?My sister Vanessa kept saying, ?We?re going to be fine. We?re going to get through this. Just find ways to show the kids in your life you care,?? Getsey said. ?And she suggested as one of those ways to give a book to a child.? With her sister?s encouragement, this idea was the springboard for Charlie?s Books. Getsey has always cared deeply about kids and education. It?s why she recently transitioned from being the chief volunteer officer on the Staunton- Augusta Family YMCA?s board of directors to becoming the Staunton- Augusta Family YMCA?s tutoring program coordinator. ?It?s been part of who I am for a very long time,? Getsey said. ?When I was in college, my main job was being a peer tutor. I continued tutoring after I graduated, both with high school students as well as adults in a literacy program.? It continued into her adulthood. ?And since having my own kids, I think the idea of supporting kids and education has been cemented in me a lot more,? Getsey continued.
?I?ve always volunteered as much as I can in their schools, and being involved on the Y board has helped me see even more ways to support area youth. ?I was so happy to be involved in the launch of the Summer Learning Loss Prevention Program. Most recently, I?ve begun teaching preschool, and will also be going back to school in the spring to become certified for clinical work with children and families.? Staunton- Augusta Family YMCA Executive Director Josh Cole believes it?s a perfect fit. ?She?s always shown a passion for making access to education equitable,? Cole said. ?She was instrumental in bringing Summer Learning Loss Prevention to our YMCA, and she?s been thrilled to see it grow.? Getsey?s new role includes recruiting and screening volunteers, as well as the administrative tasks for kids signing up to receive help. ?I will be monitoring all the sessions to provide all the support that?s needed, and doing the follow up work between sessions to keep things running smoothly,? Getsey said. As Getsey transitions into the tutoring program coordinator position, she needs to identify more tutors. ?We need adults in the area who are passionate about helping kids succeed, which is really important under our current circumstances? Getsey said. ?Anyone who is passionate about helping kids can be a tutor, but it will be especially helpful if they have a college degree, education experience, or any kind of experience working with groups of children. This will be virtual group tutoring. Tutors need to have a good internet connection, a little bit of computer skills, and a love working with groups of children.?
NEW IN THE FITNESS DEPT. By Chris Lassit er Wendy Shutty couldn?t help but chuckle. As she peaked in on the end of a cycling class, the Staunton- Augusta Family YMCA?s fitness director noticed the look of exhaustion on the five women who had just completed the class. ?You all are red- faced,? said Shutty, inviting the women to join her in laughter. The YMCA has great fitness instructors, so it?s not abnormal to see members complete a grueling workout. What was a little different is that this particular class featured virtual instruction.
?This is something we purchased some time ago and are looking to utilize come November,? Shutty said. ?It?s been an option for a while. Sometimes we use it just out of necessity if an instructor is ill or doesn?t feel well.? Shutty said the virtual classes ? which will be rolled out more in November - won?t supplant in- person instruction. It will supplement it. ?The reason we actually got this was to add in additional programming for our members,? Shutty said. ?In times when the studio is not in use, we have this option available. The really nice things about it is that we have everything (in terms of variety of virtual fitness classes) you could imagine.? YMCA member Lisa Rankin was one of the five members who participated in the virtual cycling class. ?I really enjoyed this one,? said Rankin, who tends to prefer in- person instruction. ?It pushed me. I enjoyed it. I thought it was great. I always feel like the instructors in class push me more, but today this guy really pushed me.?
Group Fit ness Changes f or November 2020 Additions: Gentle Flow Yoga on Sundays at 3:00 p.m. in the Cardio Studio. Cycling on Saturdays at 8:30 a.m. in the Cardio Studio. Location Changes from prior month: Boot Camp class on Monday/Wednesday 5:45 a.m. will now be held on the basketball court. Boot Camp class on Monday/Wednesday 6:00 p.m. will now be held at Staunton High School. Tai Chi on Monday/Friday 9:30 a.m. will now be held on the tennis court. Class time changes: Aquafit 1 and Aquafit 2 will now be held at 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. respectively instead of 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. previously.
A 2nd SITE By Chris Lassit er They had they sights on another site. In late August, the Staunton- Augusta Family YMCA opened up a student support center site for 32 elementary age students. A few weeks after, the youth development staff created a similar program for middle schoolers in the YMCA Teen Center. The programs are part of a community effort to support families through the Creative, Community Collaborative Coalition (C4). The YMCA has partnered with the neighboring Waynesboro Family YMCA, United Way Staunton Augusta Waynesboro and The Community Foundation of the Blue Ridge. Believing the YMCA could still help more families, the YMCA recently opened up a second site for elementary students at Augusta Expo. ?Because the need in the community is so great, we?re able to completely fill a program,? said Nicole Kozikowski, summer camp director at the Staunton- Augusta Family YMCA. And because the need has been great, the community response has been great, too.
?We were able to open because of the support from the United Way and Augusta Health,? added Ashley Cole, the Staunton- Augusta Family YMCA youth and family director. When the YMCA opened the initial spot for 32 kids, there were still dozens on a waiting list. The second site allows the YMCA to get more families off of the waiting list. ?It feels really good,? Cole said. ?One lady last week started crying on the phone. She was happy to get her kid somewhere safe where she could focus on her job. Our staff is also excited to start something.? Spots are still available at the Expo site for interested families. The program will ensure kids get work done in a safe, supervised manor while also trying to provide a few extracurricular activities. ?The main goal is of the program is to make sure we?re supporting them with their school,? Kozikowski said. ?We have staff available to help with independent work and worksheets they get from their teachers, making sure they are attending their Zoom classes. And then we try to make sure we add all the extracurricular activities we can given all the different schedules we are trying to work with.?
YVC: AN HONORABLE MENTION The Staunton- Augusta Family YMCA?s Youth Volunteer Corps was one of several affiliates listed in the national project of the year runner- up category. The runner- up announcement was made at the Youth Volunteer Corps annual summit celebration, done virtually in 2020. The nomination came for the local YVC group?s week- long clean- up response to the August 8th floods that caused millions of dollars of damage throughout Staunton. Kristie Shuey, the administrator for the local YVC group, thought it was the programs?finest hour. ?First, and most significantly, our community wasn?t prepared for the devastation that occurred in just 90 minutes of torrential rain,? Shuey said. ?Every single able- bodied individual was needed and valuable to the clean- up effort.? Shuey?s second reason goes right to the heart of Youth Volunteer Corps. ?Our youth witnessed a community coming together for the greater good; older and younger,
neighbors and strangers, all ethnicities,? Shuey continued. ?In that moment, nothing was dividing our small community, and our children witnessed and contributed to that.? Staunton Downtown Development Association executive director Greg Beam coordinated much of the clean- up efforts. ?We truly appreciate the quick and valuable support from the YVC during our flood response activities in downtown Staunton,? Beam said. ?We?re truly thankful to have this group of young people step forwards and help their neighbors and community.? Giovanni Cannata oversees several area restaurants, including the Byers Street Bistro, one of the hardest hit businesses during the flood. ?When our community was faced with the recovery from an unprecedented flood, the Youth Volunteer Corps were one of the first to contact us to see where they could aid us in recovery of the restaurant,? Cannata said. ?I was absolutely amazed at their willingness to contribute to their community at such a young age.?
