WELCOME BACK! Dear Staunton- Augusta Family YMCA members, Thank you! Closing our doors for 103 days has been the most difficult thing we?ve had to do as an organization. Truly, it has been the empathy, encouragement and support of our members during this time that has allowed us to pull through. On June 26th, we were able to re- open our doors, the first of many baby steps toward normalcy. We still have a long road ahead, but we are slowly opening everything that is allowed to open. Throughout our entire COVID- 19 response, we?ve been committed to two things: safety and integrity. As we re- open in phases, know that we are making every decision with the safety of our members in mind. In terms of integrity, we froze payments for the months of April, May, June and July. We did the right thing by freezing memberships, but doing the right thing often comes with a high price tag. In August, we will resume normal payment schedules. Please know that, as we resume, your support for the rest of 2020 means more now than it has than at any other time previously. Please stick with the Y! Sincerely,

Josh Cole Executive Director Staunton- Augusta Family YMCA

TAKING FITNESS OUTSIDE It?s the YMCA without walls. As the Staunton- Augusta Family YMCA continues to figure out how to help people be both safe and physically fit, YMCA group fitness instructors are offering more classes outdoors. That?s nothing new for YMCA group fitness instructor Lisa Botkin, who always taught her summer boot camp classes outdoors. ?We always did it outside in the summer months anyway,? Botkin said. ?My only modifications have been creating space between participants, and not doing partner work or using any kind of props and bands. It?s been fairly easy for me otherwise.? The members are adapting. ?Classes are going well,? said Cathy Leonard, who instructs the Fit For Life classes. ?The members prefer finding a spot in the shade, so I end up standing in the sun. Thankfully, I wear a hat, so it?s not so bad. The speaker for the music works well, we?ve become used to the traffic.? Like Botkin, Leonard has been able to make simple modifications to instruct outdoors. ?To modify my class, my cardio workout is very low impact,? Leonard said. ?I remind them to drink water between songs. After the cardio segment, I don?t use weights or a mat. Instead, I do lots of arm toning and standing ab exercises. We stretch at the beginning and end of class, and it works.? Not to say that there are not challenges. One, for instance, is that parking lots are not always as flat as fitness facility floors, observed YMCA group instructor Melissa Simmons. The other challenge is being at the mercy of the weather. Simmons teaches an evening class, and she?s navigating storms and humidity. Simmons also has a modified playlist. ?I made sure all the songs were parking lot- friendly,? she said. ?And I also used songs that were lower intensity to accommodate the outdoor conditions.?

A COOL WAY TO WARM YOUR HEART It took a lot of blood, sweat and tears. And a whole lot of pool-cleaning solution. After months of being in limbo, Staunton-Augusta Family YMCA aquatics director Beth Valentine was able to re-open the pool at The Club at Ironwood. This the third year that the Staunton-Augusta Family YMCA and The Club at Ironwood were able to work out an agreement. ?It was tons of research and Zoom meetings,? Valentine said. Once it was established that the state guidelines allowed for the pool to re-open, Valentine had a short window to prepare the outdoor pool for re-opening. ?Thanks to Derek Flory, we were able to turn it from a murky, green pool to a beautiful, clear, blue summer paradise,? said Valentine, thrilled to be able to welcome back her staff. ?The best part was welcoming back the team with open arms and adding an amazing new head guard Taylor Hubbard to the team to help the returning head guard Penny Montijo help run a self and happy pool at the Club at Ironwood.? The agreement between the Staunton-Augusta Family YMCA and The Club at Ironwood also includes access to the outdoor volleyball court and tennis courts. The biggest draw, however, is always the pool. ?The response has been smiles and lots of people thanking us,? Valentine said. ?Everyone is telling us how they are thankful they were that we opened the pool and how much their families needed it. The sound of laughter from children just warms your heart.? It?s still not exactly summer as usual, as the YMCA staff has implemented a list of procedures in adherence to the statewide Phase 3 re-opening guidelines. But no one seems to mind. ?No one has complained,? Valentine said, ?about the new rules in place.?

EMERGENCY CHILD CARE The Staunton- Augusta Family YMCA is still as committed as ever to helping families thrive. During a pandemic, it just looks different. The Staunton- Augusta Family YMCA?s youth development staff transitioned from the annual YMCA Summer Day Camp model to help the community by providing emergency childcare. ?We chose to run emergency childcare to support the community with childcare needs,? YMCA youth and family director Ashley Cole said. ?We knew we couldn?t run our normal summer camp due to the loss of the school sites, but when Staunton Alliance Church offered their space as a part of their mission to help the community, it allowed us to move forward with plans on offering something to the community.? Under the state?s guidelines, many of the things that made the YMCA Summer Day camp such a memorable experience can?t be offered. ?The staff feels the added pressure,? Cole said. ?But they have been troopers from the beginning. They have taken all the new procedures seriously. I am very proud be working with this staff. (YMCA Summer Day Camp director) Nicole (Kozikowski) has gone above and beyond to ensure the safety of our staff.? And that committed staff are still figuring out ways to put smiles on kids?faces. ?This program is similar to our summer day camps in that we are striving to offer a safe and joyous place for children to come,? Cole said. ?The biggest difference are the new procedures we have in place for safety and the additional cleaning. Our curriculum had to change to allow for social distancing games and activities, which has been somewhat challenging. Kids are still leaving every day tired, sweaty and smiling, which is a good thing.? The YMCA still has spots for emergency childcare for this summer, and the YMCA youth development team is also working on plans to help families this fall. ?We are identifying locations and staff that would be needed to run a full day and afterschool program,? Cole said. ?We will have details out in mid- July.?
