풍경 속에 머물다 남경민의 회화 Staying in the Mindscape: Nam Kyungmin’s Paintings 최재혁 Choi Jaehyeok 사비나미술관은 미술사에 등장하는 대가들의 작업실을 작가만의 Savina Museum of Contemporary Art presents the solo exhibition by Nam Kyungmin, 마련하였다. 작가는 전작에서 마티스, 호크니, 세잔 등 on the canvases with her imaginations. In her previous works, she showed the Atelier 사비나미술관 어시스턴트 큐레이터 상상력으로 재구성해온 남경민 작가의 전시 <풍경 속에 머물다>를 서양 미술사에 등장하는 거장들의 작업실을 직접 방문하거나 정보를 수집하고 작가의 상상력을 더해 작품으로 제작해왔다. 르네상스부터 인상주의, 초현실주의까지 시대와 사조를 아우르는 다양한 대가들의 그림과 소품들로 이루어진 작업실 풍경이 본 전시에서는 한국 전통 미술의 대가들과 동양적 소재로 확장되었다. 기존의 서양적 풍경에서 보여졌던 정밀한 사물 묘사와 정적인 구도가 동양적 붓놀림과 고화(古畫) 특유의 색감과 만나 한국적이고 정감어린 화풍으로 변신하였다. 또한, 한국적 소재들의 조화로 기존의 작품들에서 보여졌던 적막함과 고독감이 덜어진 자리에 따뜻하고 인간적이며 역동적인 한국적 색채가 대신하게 되었다. 특히 본 전시에 출품된 주요 작품들을 통해 사물들의 알레고리, 숭고함에 대한 표현 방식, 공간의 이중 구조 등 작품 전반에서 보여지는 남경민 작품의 주요 특징을 읽어볼 수 있다. <초대받은 N - 김홍도 화방을 거닐다>는 단원 김홍도의 <군선도>가 중심이 된 작품이다. 조선 정조 왕실에서는 김홍도에 의해 신선도가 Assistant Curator at Savina Museum of Contemporary Art . Nam has been reconstructing the great masters’ Atelier of Western painters like Henri Matisse, David Hockney, and Paul Cezanne. She visited some of the Atelier, collected information, and added imagination to create works. She has shown the Atelier filled with objects and paintings of the great masters from different periods and artistic movements such as Renaissance, Impressionism, and Surrealism. In this exhibition, she is presenting recent works in which she extended the subject matter to the Korean great masters and oriental objects. The detailed depictions of the objects and stillness of composition from the previous works are carried on to the recent works. Nam added Eastern style brushstrokes and palettes from traditional Korean painting. As a result, her new body of works seems to have elements from Korean painting and warmth. Also, because the objects in the paintings were borrowed from Korean culture, the silent and solitary mood in the previous works was replaced with warm and active traditional Korean colors. The main characteristics of Nam Kyungmin’s painting will be read through a few works in this exhibition: the allegory of the objects, the expression of the sublime, and the double composition of the space. 다수 제작되었는데, 영생(永生)의 신선을 닮고 싶었던 당시 왕실의 was created around the 3폭으로 나누었다. 그중 가장 오른쪽에 위치한 1군에 외뿔소를 타고 (1776-1800), a number of ‘Shinseondo’, the painting about Taoists, were created by Kim 염원 때문이었다. 본래 한 폭에 연결되어 그려진 <군선도>를 작가는 도덕경을 읽는 노자(老子)와 작품의 중앙 안쪽 공간 2군에 선두에서 흰 당나귀를 뒤로 돌아 타고 독서에 몰두하고 있는 장과로(張果老), 그리고 작품의 가장 왼쪽 여신선들 중 복숭아를 진 마고(麻姑)까지 19명의 신선들이 소유한 진귀한 물건과 그들의 행동이 인물의 신분과 역할을 암시하고 있다. 이러한 고화(古畵)의 특징과 마찬가지로 작가 또한 은유적이고 상징적 요소들을 사물을 통해 표현한다. 죽기 전까지 꿈을 펼치지 못한 예술가들을 병에 든 날개로, 회화의 진정성과 순수함의 상징으로 백합을, 화가의 자존감을 상징하는 붓과 물감, 작가의 마음에 안식을 주는 스노우 볼, 모든 것은 영원하지 못하며 죽음과 존재를 상징하는 해골 등이 그것이다. 또한, 본 작품에는 <군선도> 외에도 비파와 생황, 찻잔 등 김홍도가 직접 연주했던 악기와 소품이 커피 주전자와 붓 등 작가의 사물과 철저히 계산된 구도 안에 적절히 배치되어 있다. 다양한 알레고리를 지닌 사물들이 김홍도의 방인지 작가의 방인지 알 수 없게 하며 과거와 현재의 시공을 초월한 장소로 만드는 것이다. 어릴 적부터 책을 좋아했던 작가는 전작 <화가의 서재 - 워홀에서 마네까지>에서 서재를 주제로 한 작품을 이미 선보인 바 있다. 그리고 <책가도(冊架圖) - 숭고함에 대한 환영>은 그러한 서재 시리즈의 동양화 버전이라 할 수 있다. 조선 시대의 책가도는 책들과 함께 도자기 향로, 문방구 등이 있었지만 본 작품에는 책들 centerpiece, Kim Hongdo’s . During the Joseon period, King Jeongjo era Hongdo hired by the royal family. It was from the desire to be immortal like Shinseon (Taoist in Korean). Originally, is one painting but Nam broke it down to three parts in . The first part on the very right shows Lao-tzu (604-531 B.C.), one of the great philosophers and poets of ancient China, riding an ox and reading Tao Te Ching (Lao-tzu’s best known book of Taoism). The second part in the center shows Zhang Guolao riding a white donkey backwards and buried in reading a book. The third part on the left shows female Shinseon including Magu carrying peaches. Overall, there are nineteen Shinseon. Their precious possessions and postures indicated their classes and roles in the society. Like these characteristics of the ancient painting, Nam also expresses the objects with metaphoric and symbolic elements. The wing in the bottle symbolizes artists who never achieved their dreams to be an artist before they died. The lily symbolizes the truth and purity of art. Brushes and paints symbolize the artist’s pride. The snowball symbolizes the peace in the artist’s mind. The skull symbolizes death and existence. Besides , there are musical instruments Kim used to play like Saenghwang (Korean reed instrument) and Bipa (Korean mandolin). Ordinary objects like a teapot and brushes are placed carefully in the calculated composition. The objects with various allegories created the space transcending from the past and present and made it ambiguous whether this room belonged to Kim Hongdo or Nam Kyungmin. Nam has liked books from a young age and has created with a library as a subject matter.
