THE PHRASE “ALWAYS A BRIDESMAID, never a bride” is usually said tongue-in-cheek, but in my case, it rings true. I spent my 20s and 30s joyfully standing alongside loved ones as they read their vows. And now, at age 41, I’ve still yet to shop for a white dress, walk down the aisle, and say “I do” in front of them. This is not me throwing a self-pity party in lieu of a bachelorette bash. In fact, I have genuinely come to enjoy the single life and firmly believe in another cliché: “All in due time.” When our editor-in-chief, Kathryn Wagner, asked me to help bring this year’s Southern Coastal Weddings issue together, I was a little nervous. Being that I’ve never planned a wedding, it’s not something that I’ve ever spent much (any?) of my free time thinking about. And yet, I accepted the challenge, immediately diving in and connecting with couples, photographers, planners, and a litany of vendors. To say I’ve gained insight — and an appreciation — for all that goes into creating such a magical, memorable day would be an understatement. Take, for example, the colorful tablecloths and stationery pattern for Anna Giles and Gavin’s wedding (page 75), which was derived from a painting done by the bride, a Lowcountry artist and live wedding painter. Or the groovy ABBA-themed after party thrown by Kinley and Will, an unexpected shift from their charming coastal ceremony and reception at Montage Palmetto Bluff (page 44). Then there is Madison and Brett’s Beaulieu Estate wedding (page 63), where guests could indulge in white chocolate martinis and chocolate chip cookies served by a rather handsome “Milk Man.” All of the Real Wedding couples clearly poured their hearts into making their nuptials special. But they were also quick to give credit to those who helped turn their vision into reality. Our lists of experienced professionals (page 108) can help you turn your unique ideas into real-life moments. Something that helps brides (and grooms, should they want!) be photo-ready is pre-wedding prep. Learn the ins and outs of laser treatments, including how much downtime you’ll need before the big day (page 26). 5 Wedding Dress Trends

“Second looks.” As you’ll notice in many of the Real Weddings in Southern Coastal Weddings, brides are slipping into a festive and flirty second dress — whether it’s for the cocktail hour and reception, or for an after-party. The White Magnolia found 15% more brides than the previous year are purchasing a “second look” dress. Romantic lace. Elegant embroidered motifs and all-over lace statements are clearly back in fashion, with lace dresses selling strongly, the company reports. Feminine details. Think oversized bows, 3-D sculptural florals, and shimmer details. Ballgown styles rose 34% in sales, and fabrics such as jacquard and taffeta are in demand. Dropped waists. Nearly 1 in 14 gowns sold have a dropped or Basque waist, The White Magnolia says. It’s no wonder, as the style elongates the torso and provides flattering structure. Modern minimalism. Clean lines and architectural necklines keep things sleek, but today’s minimalist style dresses feature more fabric and flow, in a move away from ultrafitted structure. This intentionality is echoed in the reduced number of people brides are having in their dress-shopping entourage, with appointment groups numbering only three of the bride’s closest companions.

Event Spaces To Try Recently expanding from Charleston to open a location in Savannah at 520 E. Oglethorpe Ave., upscale modern steakhouse Marbled & Fin has been garnering rave reviews. While the bar scene is lively and the main dining room elegant, two private rooms deserve attention, too. The Canopy Room overlooks Oglethorpe Avenue and can seat 16 guests at a dining table, or 24 for an event, while the Gold Room can accommodate 24 at a dining table or a total of 40 guests for an event. The Savannah Botanical Gardens’ Reinhard House has been recently revitalized and is available for special events. Built of heart pine with gingerbread trim, the Reinhard House is a circa-1840 farmhouse representing a rural, nonmansion example of pre-Civil War Savannah residential architecture. A historic railway hub has been reborn as a new event space. Built in 1902, the stately Savannah Union Station features Renaissance-inspired architecture. Now The Union at Savannah Station (601 Cohen St.) has 8,100 square feet of event space, with a Grand Room and a Cocktail Room available for hosting weddings, rehearsal dinners, and other gatherings. The total capacity is 500 people.

Special Details Planning Savy (as in Sav-annah) has long been providing balloon backdrops, bubbly bars, and custom decor for bachelorette parties. Now, the company, which has locations in Savannah, as well as in Florida in St. Augustine and St. Petersburg, has a new service on offer. It aims to ease the stress of organizing the bachelorette weekend by creating itineraries. From booking yoga classes and private chefs to arranging transportation or breakfast delivery after a night of fun, your bridal party can focus less on the details and more on the celebration.

Going Live! We’ve noticed the growing popularity of having a live art painter during an event. For example, Savannah-born and raised Anna Giles Jeffries is a local artist and owner of A. Giles Art Inc. When she is working as a wedding painter, she connects with the couple prior to the event to talk about which moments to focus on. Then, as she paints during the wedding, she provides entertainment for wedding guests as she works at her easel to create an authentic keepsake for the couple. Jeffries, who studied art at the University of Georgia, has a painterly style that focuses on natural light, strong brushwork, color, and movement, and she is happy to give guests insights into her nature-inspired artistic process while she paints. For her own wedding, in June 2025, she used her creative skills for the decor. She created a large painting of roseate spoonbills (“lovebirds” who exhibit sweet courting behaviors) and had the charming image made into custom tablecloths. Spa Bleu has opened a space in The Collective (903 E. 70th St.), expanding the popular day spa’s reach. Perfumerie Tijōn plans to open a Savannah location (7 W. York St.) in late summer 2026. The company specializes in classes where people can create their own custom luxury fragrances and offers options for bridal parties. Tijōn originated on the island of Saint Martin in the French Caribbean.

Leading With Love AN UNEXPECTED CAREER TURN HAS DELIGHTED THIS SAVANNAH-BASED OFFICIANT

WHEN DEAR FRIENDS of Louis Schiavone Jr. got married at an intimate backyard ceremony, he became certified so he could officiate. “I assumed that would be the end of my officiating career,” Schiavone says. But when that couple later held their larger celebration for more than 120 guests in Monterey Square, they asked him to officiate that too. Soon afterward, a few other couples asked, and before he knew it, officiating had become an important part of his life. Now he’s conducting two to three ceremonies a month, including Christian, spiritual, and non-religious services, as well as elopements, vow renewals, and civil unions. (You can find him on Instagram: @SavannahSweetLou.) “To stand with two people during one of the happiest moments of their lives, to witness their commitment to one another, and to be surrounded by that incredible vortex of love and hope, it never gets old,” says Schiavone. “Every ceremony is different, every couple is unique, and every time I walk away feeling honored to have been part of such an important day.” Semi-retired after a successful career in business, Schiavone is happy to have the time and ability to work with couples. He likes to speak with couples on a Zoom or conference call, typically two or three times, prior to a ceremony. “There’s a lot of communication,” he says. “It’s understanding who they are, what makes them different, and creating a ceremony that reflects that.” Here, Schiavone answered some questions for engaged couples.

A good officiant is comfortable speaking in front of audiences, brings a calming presence, and has a sense of humor. Couples are often nervous and sometimes overwhelmed. Being calm and quick-witted is important because there are always unexpected moments, and the ability to ad-lib and keep things light can make all the difference. Most importantly, I think a great officiant genuinely cares about the couple. I tell people all the time that I fall in love with my couples. I become invested in their story. A great audio technician doesn’t hurt either. And, of course, a tuxedo. Seriously, the most important thing an officiant needs is a genuine love for people and a deep respect for marriage. Everything else is just logistics.

All the time. But it’s the people, not animals. Parents will forget their line, like when I ask, “Who presents [this person] to be married?” At one wedding, I started discussing the rings and the symbolism and the best man, who is a fireman, he just came at me with the rings. I was like, ‘Not yet!’” I joked he was a fireman, rushing in. Part of what I’m trying to do is break the tension.

Spend time with your officiant. Meet as often as necessary. Share your story, your values, and your vision. A good officiant can introduce ideas and possibilities you may never have considered and help create something that truly reflects who you are as a couple. Most couples spend months planning the reception, flowers, food, and music, but surprisingly little time thinking about the ceremony itself. The ceremony is the reason everyone is gathered together. It’s the heart of the wedding. I often tell couples that whether there are two people present or 200, the size of the audience has nothing to do with how meaningful the ceremony should be. This is especially true for destination weddings, elopements, vow renewals, and intimate ceremonies. There is never a reason for a cookie-cutter ceremony. Make it personal. Make it meaningful. Make it memorable. Years from now, those are the moments you’ll remember most. SCW

TOPICAL SKIN TREATMENTS such as retinol, vitamin C, and hyaluronic acid can provide smoother, brighter, more even skin over time. And while these products can make a visible difference, their reach is limited to the surface. That’s why the conversation has been shifting to treatments that reach below the surface — trading guesswork for targeted wavelengths. Aesthetic laser treatments offer a noninvasive middle ground that can still deliver visible, targeted results. They operate on a deceptively simple principle: controlled wavelengths of light are delivered into the skin, where they are absorbed by specific targets — like pigment, blood vessels, or water — triggering a response, from breaking down discoloration to stimulating collagen. While the results feel modern, the technology is far from new. Medical lasers have been used in dermatology since the 1960s, though they’ve been refined into the precise treatments used today. As the technology has evolved, more patients have started treatments earlier to maintain skin quality. “Preventative care is now mainstream, with patients in their 20s and 30s investing in lighter, more frequent treatments,” says Dr. Carl Pearl, a plastic surgeon and owner of Chatham Plastic Surgery. Because laser treatments rely on controlled heat and the skin’s natural healing process, results are built gradually over a series of sessions rather than achieved all at once. That’s why providers approach them as part of a broader long-term strategy — not a quick fix. “The truth sits in the middle,” Pearl explains. “When used well, lasers are one of the most effective tools for long-term skin quality, but they work best as part of a consistent, realistic plan.”

Going Deeper “Different lasers target specific skin concerns,” explains Dr. Corinne Howington, a dermatologist at Low Country Dermatology and Aesthetics. “They use focused light energy to precisely address issues such as pigmentation, redness, texture, and hair. We choose the laser based on the patient’s concern, their skin type, and how deep the issue is.” Lasers can get complicated — the options vast, the variables many. But knowing every detail isn’t the point. A knowledgeable provider will help determine the right fit for your skin. What helps is understanding the basics, starting with the most fundamental distinction.

Laser treatments aren’t limited to one age group or skin type. While many patients are turning to them at an earlier age as part of a preventative approach, others select lasers down the road to address concerns like sun damage, redness, or texture. The best candidates are those with a specific goal — and realistic expectations. Because treatments are tailored to each person, a consultation is essential to determine both safety and effectiveness. Just as important as the treatment itself is the commitment that comes with it. “Good laser outcomes depend on aftercare, consistent sun protection, and follow-through,” notes Erin Hutcheson, FNP-C, at Park Aesthetics. “It’s not only about what the skin needs — it’s also about whether the patient is prepared to support the result.”

WHAT TO EXPECT:

The Investment Laser treatments are rarely a one-time appointment. “A common misconception is that laser treatments are a one-and-done solution,” Howington says. “Most skin and hair concerns require a series of treatments to achieve optimal results.” Where you go matters, too. Pricing and experience can vary depending on the provider, with options ranging from med spas to board-certified dermatologists and plastic surgeons. It’s important to do your research: read reviews, verify credentials, and choose a provider with experience in the specific treatment you’re considering. Non-ablative treatments, like IPL or fractional lasers, typically range from $300 to $1,000 per session and often require a series of three to six treatments. More intensive ablative lasers, like CO2 resurfacing, can range from $1,500 to $3,500 per session but are usually performed less frequently, often requiring fewer sessions overall. Many providers offer package pricing, bundling three to five sessions at a reduced rate for concerns like pigmentation, redness, or maintenance. SCW

BEFORE: In a consultation, the provider will assess your skin, talk through your goals, and recommend a treatment plan. In the days leading up, you may be asked to avoid sun exposure and retinoids. DURING: Most treatments take place in a clinical treatment room, where you’ll recline in a chair while your provider guides a handheld device across the skin, working in small, controlled sections. The machine may emit soft clicks or flashes of light with each pass. Sessions typically last anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour. Sensation varies but is often described as brief pulses of heat or a warm, prickling feeling. Many treatments include a topical numbing cream beforehand, and for more intensive ablative procedures, local anesthesia may be used to ensure comfort.

AFTER: Downtime depends on the intensity of the treatment. Lighter options, like IPL or gentle fractional lasers, may leave you with mild redness that fades within a few hours, making them easy to fit into a lunch break. More intensive treatments, however, can involve several days of redness, swelling, and peeling, often requiring a few days of social downtime. In the days that follow, skin may feel dry or sensitive, and sun protection becomes especially important as the skin heals. Choosing laser treatment doesn’t mean you’re unhappy with what you see in the mirror. It means you’re paying attention — to the small shifts, the early signs, the changes that come with time. And there’s nothing wrong with wanting to look in the mirror and feel your absolute best.

Nailing It WHEN IT COMES TO BRIDAL PARTY MANICURES, THE CURRENT TREND IS CHIC AND MINIMAL.

WHILE WEDDING MANICURE TRENDS are always evolving, brides are largely embracing timeless, understated looks, according to Elizabeth Esparza, owner of eMarie Nail Salon. At her two salon locations in Savannah, she says, French manicures and neutral pinks remain popular, but with subtle updates to keep the look current. Traditional French manicures have become more refined, notes Esparza, with many brides opting for a thinner “micro French” tip. Meanwhile, soft nude and pink manicures are getting a modern twist with delicate chrome finishes that add dimension without overpowering the look. Shape is another area where brides are choosing simplicity. According to Esparza, natural oval or almond-shaped nails are among the most requested styles, creating an elegant and effortless appearance. The move toward minimalism extends beyond the bride, with bridesmaids seeking soft pinks, sheer nudes, and milky white shades applied to natural nails. Bold colors, elaborate nail art, and heavily embellished designs have taken a back seat. “Rather than extravagant designs and heavy embellishments, we’re seeing a shift toward healthy, well-maintained nails with soft, timeless finishes,” says Esparza. That emphasis on nail health has become a defining feature of current bridal trends. The foundation of a beautiful manicure lies in preparation, including cuticle care, precise shaping, and attention to detail. “While color is important, it’s the clean finish and healthy-looking nail underneath that truly makes a manicure stand out,” she says. For brides preparing for their big day, Esparza recommends experimenting with different styles and shades before the final appointment. “What you love in a photo may feel very different once it’s on your nails,” she says. “It’s always helpful to test a few options ahead of your wedding day.” And as current trends show, the most memorable statement may be a subtle one. DURING THE GILDED AGE of the late 1800s and well into the Roaring Twenties, Jekyll Island was a playground for the wealthiest Americans. Imagine the Rockefellers and Vanderbilts playing croquet, and you’ll have an idea of the wealth and opulence that was found there, in Georgia’s Golden Isles. Today, Jekyll Island is no longer just for robber barons; it’s a state park dedicated to public recreation and being carefully conserved for future generations to enjoy. Villa Ospo, where this styled wedding photoshoot takes place, was built in 1928 for Standard Oil executive Walter Jennings, and has since been restored to its former glory. At the southern end of Beaufort County, cross the bridge to Hilton Head Island. Bluffton is Hilton Head’s mainland sister — an eclectic community with an artist’s soul. Travel over the Savannah River, and you’re in Chatham County, Georgia. A wedding permit provides you the assurance that the space you want for your special day will be guaranteed for you and that the general public will not interfere with your ceremony. The application fee is $30. Permit fees (for 4 hours minimum) range from $350 to $725 with additional rental time of $60 per hour.
