“SAUTER 4.0” We discuss the digital transformation with Dr Felix Gassmann, Head of Technology at Fr. Sauter AG.
No industry is unaffected by the digital transformation. What changes has SAUTER experienced in recent years? The digital transformation had already started in building automation before the buzzwords “Industry 4.0” and “digitalisation” were doing the rounds. Using a proprietary novaNet bus system that’s still ingenious today, SAUTER was highly successful in the market with its EY3600 building automation system. SAUTER was quick to recognise a paradigm shift from the existing stand-alone solutions to fully networked digitalised systems. This resulted in a decision that was pretty brave at the time. SAUTER adopted the open BACnet communication protocol as its standard – a protocol developed especially for building automation and largely unknown outside the USA. SAUTER pushed the envelope further still by operating not only the HVAC energy preparation with BACnet but also the room automation, therefore providing an easy connection between the two systems. In 2008 this strategy yielded the new Modulo 5 system generation from SAUTER. Suddenly we had catapulted ourselves, technologically speaking, to the forefront of the industry. What is the current situation for SAUTER and the industry? The near explosive growth of computing power and storage density, coupled with the regular halving of prices, has revolutionised not only the IT and telecommunication industries. The building automation sector was immediately swept along by it too. The 4

enormous capacities of today’s databases and vastly higher internet and network speeds have spawned new models for collaboration. The planning and implementation phases in the building industry, above all, are changing rapidly because of digitalisation. Present-day buildings and their technical systems are created as digital, three-dimensional models. But “Building Information Modelling” – or BIM – goes much further. This digitally stores all the technical data, the planned building process, logistics and even the maintenance information vital to the life cycle of the building. Each company working on construction feeds and edits information in the BIM database using standardised formats. SAUTER was on board with this trend right from the start. It participates in national expert groups and has published key products in the BIM data formats Revit and IFC4 for downloading from its website. The changes effected by “Industry 4.0” in production are comparable to those made by BIM in construction and building technology. What digital solutions is SAUTER focussed on? Our strategy is aimed at “Operational Excellence”, “Business Model Innovation” and “Customer Experience”. Our goal is the digital transformation of SAUTER’s hardware and software products, including their use and customer interaction. The Internet of Things (IoT) and cloud service techno logies are at the forefront. The new business models linked to this will greatly increase customer benefits from our hardware and software products.
What opportunities does digitali sation provide, in particular for a resource-poor country such as Switzerland? The opportunity – and yet the great challenge – for Swiss industry is to digitalise business processes in a consistent manner. This will enhance efficiency, both in terms of greater sales and the creation of new products, more and more of which will be digital. The upcoming decision-makers of Generation Y, soon to be followed by customers from Generation Z, are increasingly determining how and when they wish to purchase products and services. This irreversible development will overturn present customer loyalty models. Having a decent web presence is no longer nearly enough! What is becoming all-important is how a customer experiences the “journey” from needing a product, finding it, purchasing it and finally using the product. The customer’s interactions with the company – the customer experience and the customer journey – have to be up-dated. This requires innovative thinking – a raw material that’s still available in Switzerland. What obstacles do you see here? I see three major obstacles – lack of financing, lack of technical expertise and the absence of a culture of change. According to a survey by the Zurich University of Applied Sciences in Business Administration and SUISSEDIGITAL – the association for communication networks – only 27% of the companies polled throughout Switzerland
have digitally optimised their business processes and customer experience. Two thirds of the companies surveyed are way behind here and haven’t even started dealing with the transformation. I think that the digital change is already well advanced and the dinosaurs that haven’t digitalised will not survive. To what extent does the question of costs influence your decisions relating to SAUTER’s digital trans formation? Before asking the question about costs, I first try to apply the digital achievements to a business model beneficial to SAUTER. Where and how can we accelerate existing processes, or completely eliminate them using new technology? What else can we do for our customers? How do customers experience us today, and how can we transform this experience into a lasting impression for the future? When I can answer questions like these with interesting solutions, an investment plan soon replaces the question of costs. This is because it’s now clear that the long-term success of the company depends directly on this. Do companies like SAUTER even have a chance against the global tech behemoths? In future there’ll still be buildings with HVAC installations that only function with products such as SAUTER’s. It’s up to us to capitalise on the technologies of companies like Google

for our own purposes. We’re already doing this now. We’re using Microsoft Azure, for example, to transform our building management software into an individual cloud service. And our key products should become ever more intelligent and communicative. SAUTER’s product range already features actuators that automatically process temperature and differential pressure measurements, thereby controlling volume flows and pressures in laboratories and clean rooms. These products are perfect for delivering their data to the cloud. And this model will not only provide greater transparency – it will also significantly change processes in sales, logistics and maintenance. Let’s take a look far into the future – what’s going to come after digitalisation?
future scenario. I’m talking about systems that could autonomously find their way within completely new spheres. They wouldn’t just start thinking independently. Over time they would develop their own consciousness. Such systems would be capable of automating processes that are currently only within the realm of humans. Customer requirements, products and pricing could be tailor-made for individuals. Therefore, after digitalisation we’ll have “personalisation”. I just don’t know! Whatever happens, we’re now laying the foundations for SAUTER being able to significantly shape the future of building automation. As was the case with paradigm shifts in the past, our main goal is to be there for our customers and provide them with solutions fit for the future.
That’s a difficult question! A somewhat bold answer might be: Today’s digitalisation has only been possible due to inexpensive networking. In 20 years’ time it could be just as cheap to provide the cognitive and associative abilities of human thinking within a very small space in a powerful parallelstructured processor environment. What we call artificial intelligence or deep machine learning today are just a small child’s first attempts to speak when compared to this

c onsumption readings in their own charts and retrieve current values – on an hourly basis, if needed. Everything consolidated in one solution The current version of SAUTER Vision Center combines many additional operational applications that, previously, were managed separately. Schedules in the management solution can now activate both BACnet and SAUTER novaNet devices simultaneously. Furthermore, special higher-level schedules allow applications to be controlled that encompass multiple stations. SAUTER has also revised handling of all supported schedules, with adjustments made following user requests. BACnet, SAUTER novaNet and OPC-UA are supported, enabling protocols such as M-Bus, ModBus and LON to be incorporated. This gives SAUTER Vision Center maximum flexibility. Using OPC and API interfaces, even third-party non-HVAC systems – fire protection, video monitoring and lift control, for example – and industry-specific applications can be seamlessly connected to SAUTER Vision Center. Step-by-step migration of existing SAUTER novaNet installations into the system need not be expensive. This is because replacement of the automation stations can be avoided. The SAUTER building management solution also includes an OPC-UA server. This means that all system and energy management data processed from each application with a OPC-UA client is used to its best effect. Third-party applications can request information from SAUTER Vision Center and process it further directly. Furthermore, the latest generation supports Microsoft Server 2016 and MS SQL 2016.
Streamlined processes for more efficiency The modular combination of building, energy and maintenance management in one software package brings with it many advan tages. SAUTER Vision Center is fully compatible with the HTML5 standard. It therefore supports almost all internet browsers and can run on any operating system – Linux, Unix, iOS, Android or Windows. In contrast to some solutions, installation of additional apps or plug-ins is not required. Bundling previously stand-alone applications in one integrated solution provides the ultimate in operation and visualization of building management systems. The software fits easily into a company’s process landscape and workflows, which of course is all to the benefit of the building’s users. Besides the inherent technical advantages, SAUTER Vision Center 6.1 offers its various user groups an impressive degree of convenience and security. Whether on the go or in the office, operators can access relevant information directly, regardless of time or location. The result is leaner processes and satisfied users at every level. The energy efficiency of buildings is also optimised, therefore making them more sustainable.

Easy and efficient thanks to dynamic volume flow The right energy quantity at the right time and the right place – as simple as it sounds, this core task is difficult for room automation to fulfil. In heating/cooling systems, multiple components are usually busy regulating the flow rates demanded in the system. The SAUTER eValveco flow control system is the energy-efficient solution for variable volume flow regulation.
End customers, operators, planners and plant builders – they all benefit from an optimally configured heating/cooling system consisting of the fewest components possible. Installation is easier, commissioning is quicker and simpler, maintenance is more efficient and temperature variations can be avoided. In office buildings and small and medium-sized commercial buildings in particular, a well-configured system also reduces energy consumption significantly.
Simple optimisation centrally instead of adjustments gradually The new SAUTER eValveco solution is a dynamic flow regulation system with 6-way ball valve. It is employed in HVAC installations with variable flow rates and is designed for 4-pipe systems. These include climate-control ceilings, for example, or fan coil units that switch between heating and cooling modes.
Relentless work in the dropped ceiling Controlling the flow rates in heating/cooling systems normally involves the use of multiple components. Alongside each pressurebalanced valve, the installer also has to fit a 6-way ball valve with actuator. During commissioning, in-depth knowledge of hydraulic installations is needed to make the optimum system setting. This knowledge, however, is often lacking. More often than not, several adjustment runs must be performed, often entailing work inside the suspended ceiling.
The system is used for real-time flow regulation and automatic hydronic balancing in fully or partially loaded zones. It therefore replaces a static balancing valve and a regulating/mixing valve or ball valve.
And that’s not all. If the setpoints are changed periodically during operation of the system, the hydraulic relationships in the plant also change. This results, sooner or later, in poor heating and cooling performance – and uncontrollable energy variations and losses – becoming the norm.
When SAUTER eValveco is fitted, the bus system applies setpoints to adjust the volume flow required for each area. As this is performed centrally, no work is necessary in the rooms themselves. This is a clear advantage when commissioning and setting the parameters on installations. Constant measurements for dynamic regulation The ultrasound flow sensor incorporated in SAUTER eValveco records volume flow continuously. Where there are deviations from the setpoint, it also makes automatic adjustments. This dynamic procedure compensates for the temperature variations due to changing hydraulic relationships – a problem common in traditional systems.

users with maximum comfort. From construction of a building and through its entire service life, SAUTER eValveco cuts costs and energy consumption. This therefore represents an investment with an eye clearly on the future.
Comfort and efficiency rolled into one SAUTER eValveco offers major benefits for all user groups. The highly transparent status of the installation and energy that it consumes ticks all the boxes with regards to modern energy management. Furthermore, the dynamic pressure balancing of the hydraulic system allows a solution with the system to heat and cool more precisely, providing

Energy efficiency increased automatically When combined with the trusted SAUTER ecos504/505 room automation station or the ecos311 room controller, this new unit efficiently controls and monitors the room climate, lighting and sun shading. The temperature setpoint correction entered locally by a user may result in more power being consumed. To avoid wasting energy, however, the setpoint correction of the room operating unit can be reset at regular intervals – centrally via a building management system, for example. Room users can also press the ECO button on the unit to return the room control to Automatic mode. Additional unit for controlling lights and window blinds The SAUTER ecoUnit358 push-button unit is an extension to the SAUTER ecoUnit355 room operating unit. It is ideal for use with SAUTER ecos5 or ecos311 room controllers. Models of the optional switching unit are available supporting two, four or eight button functions. The SAUTER ecoUnit355 unit connected identifies the button that is being pressed. Individual configurations The features of the SAUTER ecoUnit358 push-button unit can be configured and adapted to the room functions needed. The unit, for instance, allows individual operation of the sun shading with roller shutters and window blinds. It can also dim or switch the lights on and off. The device therefore fulfils conventional lighting and window blind switching requirements.

Highly promising partnership with OEM customers In 2014, SAUTER developed a configurable controller for regulating domestic hot water systems for its long-standing customer CHAROT. Following the success of PACK CONTROL 3®, the partners launched more products on the market, building on the strengths of this controller.
Generating domestic hot water is very energy-intensive and the need for hot water continues to rise. No wonder that efficient solutions for control and monitoring technology are increasingly in demand. CHAROT is the French market leader in large hot water storage tanks for buffer tanks and domestic hot water preparation, and has trusted SAUTER’s effective solutions for many years. Precise, flexible system The two companies jointly developed PACK CONTROL 3® in 2014. Because of its performance and great adaptability, it has been very popular with heating installers. The integrated, preconfigured applications provide automatic control and the option to adjust parameters to meet current requirements. This enables an application to be configured even more flexibly.
Innov ation
16
SAUTER Facts No 36
The developers have equipped the control system with an exact temperature monitor for the hot water. This means that hot water systems consume minimum energy. Multiple SAUTER EGT353…356 cable temperature sensors and SAUTER EGT311 and 411 clamp-on temperature sensors record information from the installation. The sensors allow the controller to activate the regulating units precisely. These are mainly SAUTER AVM105 and AVM115 valve actuators and – in bigger systems – SAUTER AVM321 valve actuators. Fitting takes next to no time with the actuators connected to the SAUTER BUN valves using quick coupling. A development for the future With the PACK CONTROL 3® configurable controller proving so popular, SAUTER and CHAROT decided to export a follow-up product – the HW100 – to other European countries and beyond. The successor has the same features as its big brother, allowing SAUTER to integrate hot water preparation circuits easily into preconfigured control systems.
Spurred on by this experience, the two companies are moving forward with the OEM project and developing a new controller, the RDT600. This unit will expand on the architecture of the HW100 but will be designed for different operating scenarios. It will form part of the RDT series and be used to control heating, ventilation and air conditioning. This success story illustrates once again the benefits of an OEM partnership. SAUTER and CHAROT took the PACK CONTROL 3® solution and its strengths, and modified it step by step until it matched the demands of the HVAC market.
CHAROT The company CHAROT was founded in 1932 in Sens, a city in France’s Yonne department. In 1952 it manufactured its first oil tanks. Since 1970, it has also been producing hot water storage tanks. Today CHAROT produces tanks for domestic hot water preparation and buffer tanks for the housing and services sectors. Always attuned to its customers’ needs, CHAROT’s product range also encompasses renewable energy solutions. These include solar energy and heat pumps, to name but a couple. www.charot.com

When downtimes are not an option: Energy Pack for SAUTER valve actuators The energy module for SAUTER vialoq valve actuators enables simple retrofitting of systems for increased safeguarding against downtimes in the event of power disruptions. The super capacitors it uses offer greater flexibility and compactness in several application environments.
Valve actuators play a vital role in controlling energy flows in all kinds of buildings. And even though modern automation systems consist of an increasingly larger proportion of digital electronics, they can only interact with air and water via mechanical actuators. Flows need electricity Actuators convert electrical power into motion in order to regulate volume flows. But what happens when a fault interrupts the power supply? Until the power supply is restored, a simple valve actuator or perhaps all actuators in the affected part of the building remain in their current positions.
18
SAUTER Facts No 36
In the most favourable scenario, this will only lead to a waste of resources, but it can also cause critical installation statuses and even wide-ranging damage due to cooling, heating and similar effects. That’s why fail-safe valve actuators automatically return to a safe emergency position if the power supply is interrupted. Previous solution: spring return systems The electrical actuators widely used today that replaced the former pneumatic systems are themselves not equipped with an emergency position. Spring return systems are a solution to this. In these systems, the actuator uses a mechanical spring for tensioning during the setting
process, and the actuator is continuously supplied with energy for setting the valve. In the event of a power failure, the spring return system automatically returns the valve actuator back to the starting position. SAUTER Energy Pack – an advantageous option An alternative to this is the use of capacitors or, to be more precise in the case of the SAUTER Energy Pack, super capacitors, also known as supercaps. These supercaps are capable of holding an electrical charge, requiring only a very low electric current to do so. If there is a power failure, the actuator can be moved to a specifically chosen emergency position with the energy stored in the supercap.
Simple safety upgrade The flexible use of the SAUTER Energy Pack means that SAUTER vialoq valve actuators can also be retrofitted. The system status is indicated by an integrated LED and is easy to monitor – the system supervisor can even observe the current system status from a distance. The SAUTER Energy Pack emergency positioning solution with super caps offers advantages over spring return systems: It requires less space and is simple to retrofit as well as being replaceable. The stroke direction for the emergency function can be selected freely. Furthermore, the supercaps ensure that the energy storage has a long service life and is low-maintenance.
The new energy module for SAUTER vialoq products can thus move the valve actuator to a predefined open or closed position (emergency position) in the event of a power failure. The system supervisor simply sets a DIP switch to select the required emergency position directly after installation and can adjust it later without any difficulty. This ensures that undefined installation statuses can be avoided.

Vienna University of Veterinary Medicine invests in automation solution of the future The campus of the Vienna University of Veterinary Medicine has 47 buildings spread over 15 hectares. SAUTER is installing a modular automation solution at the 250-year-old education and research institute. This means that the many animals and 3,700 or so staff members and students will benefit from the best possible conditions in future.
In the 18th Century, there were devastating outbreaks of cattle diseases across Europe. In an attempt to gain control of the problem, the Austrian monarch Maria Theresa opened the school of veterinary medicine in Vienna in 1765. This was the first such institution in a German-speaking country and has since undergone massive development. Today, the campus has 47 buildings, five university clinics and a state-of-the-art research infrastructure. As the client, the Bundesimmobiliengesellschaft (Federal real-estate company) has been modernising the technical systems on the campus since mid-2016. SAUTER had already equipped the buildings, constructed in the 1990s, with innovative automation systems. In 2014, the building automation specialists installed SAUTER novaPro Open as a BACnet Advanced Workstation. This replaced the two existing SAUTER EY2400 systems with the LZ10 command centre. The university wanted to keep this tried-and-tested technology and SAUTER was therefore tasked with updating the entire building automation.

SAUTER Facts No 36
Modular solution for a large campus SAUTER is gradually upgrading all the technology on the university campus to state-of-the-art level. It is particularly challenging as the systems must be replaced whilst still in operation. The engineers, for example, have to swap 500 ageing automation stations with units from the modular system family SAUTER EY-modulo 5. The futureproof technology used is based entirely on the open communication protocol BACnet/IP. This will also allow the university to seamlessly connect third-party systems in the future. SAUTER has fitted the rooms with modern pressure sensors and humidity sensors. Every building therefore has ideal conditions for studying. Furthermore, the new SAUTER ASV115CF VAV compact controllers ensure the correct supply of air to all rooms and labs, as well as optimising energy consumption intelligently.

Checking systems can become a real physical challenge if the buildings are spread out over a 15-hectare campus. SAUTER has thus set up a clever network of touchscreen PCs enabling everything – from the heating to the lighting – to be monitored and controlled remotely. All the connected systems can be operated without having to walk across the whole campus. This is possible due to 74 networked displays and the SAUTER novaPro Open flexible visualization and building management solution – a BACnet Advanced Workstation.

Accurate planning to keep the animals safe SAUTER is replacing all existing DDC elements in the 47 buildings on the campus. The downtimes of the HVAC systems, however, must be kept to a minimum. The systems have to be exchanged within these narrow time constraints. The planners therefore made intensive preparations before the work began. They simplified and streamlined certain work steps and even partially assembled the automation stations beforehand. After a few hours the actual conversion work was complete and the downtime amounted to just minutes.
There were good reasons for quickly getting the systems operational again. Hygiene requirements mean, for example, that positive and negative pressures in the operating theatres and animal laboratories must be reliably maintained. For the operating theatres this was not a major problem. They could just be temporarily closed. But for the isolation laboratories there was no such option. SAUTER, however, performed meticulous preparations before replacing the automation stations. The supply of air remained virtually uninterrupted, thereby ensuring the safety of the animals. A game-changing automation solution Work is scheduled for completion by the end of 2018. The modern automation technology from SAUTER in the 47 buildings not only provides the basis for future education and research in veterinary medicine. It also guarantees the well-being of the animals on the campus while, at the same time, maximising energy efficiency.
Oldest university of veterinary medicine in Germanspeaking world The Vienna University of Veterinary Medicine is the only academic veterinary medicine education and research institute in Austria and also the oldest in German-speaking countries. It currently employs around 1,400 employees and has over 2,300 students. http://www.vetmeduni.ac.at/

An excellent working environment at 155 metres At one of the most prominent spots in the banking district of Frankfurt am Main, an ultra-modern working environment is being created in the new Marienturm. The planners are relying on SAUTER’s technical expertise and smart solutions to make the building – 155 metres in height – equally impressive in terms of energy efficiency.
©Pecan Development
The SAUTER building automation experts were involved from very early on as partners in the Marienturm project, providing their knowhow of solutions for state-of-the-art office buildings during the planning stage. Because of its high energy efficiency, the Marienturm was awarded the LEED Platinum pre-certification even before it was completed. A decisive factor here was the modular solution of the building automation specialist.

The tower, flooded with daylight, was to be fitted with an intelligent room automation solution that would adjust the air-conditioning, ventilation, window blinds and the switchable sockets for the standalone floor lamps to the different areas and heights of the rooms, while also enabling energy-efficient operation. This is why the customer decided on the SAUTER Vision Center modular management software. The web-based solution (Moving Wall) will enable facility managers at the Marienturm to operate and visualize all the systems, even allowing simple, remote adjustment of key parameters via drag and drop. All data is integrated and displayed clearly, ensuring that resources are conserved in the operation of the skyscraper.

Blending in with these superlative surroundings, a new set of buildings comprising the Marienturm and Marienforum is due to be constructed by early 2019. With their striking silhouettes, the two new buildings will be perfect additions to the modern skyline. Future tenants will be wooed by an attractive mix of office space and leisure facilities, plus a wonderful view of the surrounding area.
Intelligent control centre With the goal of making the Marienturm a workplace fit for the future, the project developer, Pecan Development GmbH, employed a holistic concept for the design and usage. In addition to office space, the 38 floors also offer amenities such as a restaurant, gym, nursery, conference rooms and 24-hour reception.

The most international of all German cities, Frankfurt am Main continues to grow. Nowhere is this more evident than in the financial district, where people from all over the world work together every day inside architectural masterpieces.
Segmentation for flexibility SAUTER’s specialists used a pluggable concept and pre-assembled plug-in system distributors for the room automation, thus minimising the time needed to install components. This solution permits a high level of standardisation while also increasing flexibility. Furthermore, the segmentation of the room automation means that operating technicians can also quickly implement extensions for individual tenants later on. All the building’s installations are seamlessly integrated into SAUTER’s system via four different communication protocols and the powerful SAUTER ecos504/505 room automation stations. A total of 2,000 objects are connected. The room controllers are perfect for monitoring, regulating and controlling the climate using a system that deploys all of these protocols.
The energy monitoring module of SAUTER Vision Center collects all the data, providing a comprehensive display of the energy consumption and an automatic calculation of daily, weekly, monthly and yearly consumption. SAUTER Vision Center’s maintenance module enables technicians to efficiently plan and manage future maintenance. Flagship architecture conserving resources Even before its completion, the Marienturm is considered an architectural showpiece. However, when the tenants move into the LEED Platinum building’s 38 storeys in early 2019, they will find much more than a modern, attractive atmosphere. With the integrated building automation solution from SAUTER they can be sure that the Marienturm is always making efficient and responsible use of energy resources.
Although the Marienturm has an area of around 45,000 square metres, each of its tenants can individually regulate the heating, ventilation and sunshading as required, thanks to SAUTER’s installation of 1,500 room controllers, SAUTER ecoUnit355 and SAUTER ecoUnit365 with Bluetooth. Tenants can use the operating devices, for example, to control the window blinds to meet their individual needs – even during a conference on the 33rd floor.
©Pecan Development
SAUTER Vision Center for energy efficiency Energy efficiency also played a key role when planning the Marienturm’s technical equipment, with an energy concept making use of all the knowledge currently available on conserving resources and protecting the environment. 570 consumption meters were also integrated into the building management software to provide the facility management with the tools that they need to optimally monitor and control the energy requirements.

The buildings and rooms differ greatly in terms of the air-conditioning, ventilation and shade that they require. The university has commissioned a modular solution from SAUTER. It will ensure a cool ambience in the library even at the height of summer, maintain optimum temperatures and air conditions for experiments in the labs and provide a comfortable climate even if lecture theatres are full. Demand-controlled regulation The SAUTER EY-modulo 5 system family is the go-to choice for connecting the room automation to the energy supply. 150 powerful automation stations (SAUTER ecos504/505) and 1,500 fan coil controllers – with 25,000 data points in total – will regulate the climate according to the number of people in the room. With the supply of the exact amount of heat, cold or air needed, energy savings can be substantial. This is particularly so where occupancy levels fluctuate vastly, for example in lecture theatres or the cafeteria. SAUTER ecoUnit346 and ecoUnit365 operating devices with integrated touch screens are being installed for students’ and staff’s individual needs. Just a few swipes of the finger temporarily adjust the lighting, shading and ventilation. Sustainable energy concept The university is committed to sustainable energy use. That is why the campus has its own cooling system with pumps to create the ideal temperature. Heating is also provided through pumps connected to the city’s district heating network. Each installation is linked up to the SAUTER Vision Center management system. This includes not only all heating and cooling pumps but other third-party systems – ventilation controllers and thermostats, for example. Facility managers can thus keep an eye on the systems and energy consumption and make any necessary interventions.
Comfortable climate with low energy consumption The end of the first building phase at İstanbul Şehir University is approaching. Students will be greeted with optimum room climates when, in a few months’ time, they move into the campus. SAUTER’s intelligent solution, the university’s own cooling system and integration in the city’s district heating network are the key. This means that energy consumption remains low even if temperatures outside are subtropical.

Energy efficiency for EU building with the largest steel construction in the Netherlands The European Patent Office (EPO) is the largest European organization after the European Commission and employs 2,700 people in the Netherlands. In addition, there are offices in Munich, Berlin, Brussels and Vienna. The EPO grants patents to inventors and companies. By means of a single patent application they can obtain patent protection in up to 44 member countries. In addition, the EPO provides access to more than 100 million patent documents that can be used freely for research into innovations and technological developments.
Šwww.epo.org
Design and build The project is the result of integral collaboration between TBI companies J.P. van Eesteren and Croonwolter&dros. For the new building of the European Patent Office, the construction consortium NewMain B.V. was founded. NeMain was responsible for both the design of the architecture and the installation technique, and for the realization of it.
A new office building with a gross floor area of 85,000 m2 has been realized at the location of the Rijswijk office. The impressive building has a length of 160 m and is 110 m high. The building is divided over 27 floors of open and closed office spaces and meeting rooms, a restaurant, sports facilities and a shopping area. The building offers space for 1,950 employees. The new EPO building combines contemporary architecture with a modern, advanced infrastructure. According to architect Diederik Dam, it is the tallest and thinnest construction in steel and glass in Europe. The main building is made up of more than 10,000 tons of steel, making the building the largest steel construction in this quality in the Netherlands. A total of 100,000 m2 of glass was used in the building.

SAUTER Facts No 36
SAUTER has provided building automation and building management for this ambitious project. In addition to the good price / performance ratio, the Plan of Approach developed in detail was a decisive factor for the award to SAUTER Netherlands. Through the involvement from the design phase, SAUTER Netherlands has been able to contribute its expertise very early. The design of the control systems has been smoothly extended to the realization phase. Using each other's expertise has had a reinforcing effect on cooperation. Prefab-concept The cooperation between the parties has already borne fruit at an early stage. Because the new building has risen directly adjacent to the existing EPO office and the rest of the lot offered little space for a large construction site, prefab has been used extensively during construction. Based on the BIM model, prefab modules have been developed that have been delivered ready-made and assembled on site. Each floor of the EPO office consists of approximately 80 individual offices, a larger meeting room, a videoconferencing room, two pantries and two larger spaces for teamwork. Flexibility of the building has been one of the spearheads. All installations of the building are integrated in the combined floor / ceiling system, so that spaces can be filled in flexibly. The flexibility in automation is achieved with a fully pluggable concept; no electrical connection has been screwed in for the controls and all cabling has been realized with prefab cables with plugs. The concept, prepared in detail, significantly reduced assembly time. The failure costs resulting from connection errors were reduced to nearly zero.
Integrated room control The approximately 2,160 rooms are each equipped with integrated technology for climate control, lighting and sun protection. The lighting armatures and presence sensors are an integral part of the automation via DALI. The window position is detected for energy purposes. The climate comfort is realized with climate ceilings with 6-way valve for change / over of cold and heat. The control takes place with a pressure independent control valve. Smart application of this technique greatly facilitated hydraulic adjustment; the desired flow for heating and cooling is simply set per room on the BMS. The SVC management system has made it possible to redistribute office spaces from the screen. The graphical concept 'moving walls' then subsects the technical redistribution. By applying such intelligence, the ceilings do not have to be opened in the event of future wall changes.
System integration optima-forma Not only at decentralized level is the automation integrated; at central level, the Security Management System (access control) is an integral part of the SAUTER Vision Center management system. Also the lift and transport installations are integrated and visualized on SVC, which provides insight into the stand per lift. With the Energy Management Module EMM and the approximately 400 units of integrated kWh meters, water, gas and energy meters, active energy management is taking place to make and keep EPO a sustainable project. The construction consortium NewMain B.V. started the implementation of this building in early 2014. The building was recently completed and officially opened by His Majesty King Willem Alexander.
Šwww.epo.org
Sustainable project The automation of the primary installations is housed in 22 control cabinets. The regulation and control of the heat and cold generation is also included. The freely available heat and cold energy is stored sustainably in soil sources in the summer and in the winter. If
there is a need for cold or heat, this is withdrawn from the aquifers in the season in question. Solar energy is generated at EPO with panels that serve as awning system for the roof garden, situated at an altitude of 127 meters. The PV plant yields about 120,000 kWh on an annual basis. The sustainable energy generation and the automation of the energy-efficient installations contribute to the BREAAM certificate of EPO.

Wellness facilities and fitness centres are extremely popular but require a lot of energy to run. They need energy-efficient solutions that do without fossil fuels. “Solar Fitness & Wellness” in Dübendorf near Zurich is an impressive example of how sustainable sources and an intelligent automation solution can reliably power even energy guzzlers like steam baths and saunas.
In August 2017, the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (Empa) and the Eawag aquatic research institute opened the “Solar Fitness & Wellness” unit on their research and innovation platform NEST (Next Evolution in Sustainable Building Technologies). The aim is to run this fitness centre and wellness area without any fossil fuels and reduce the energy requirement to one sixth of the energy normally used. 28
SAUTER Facts No 36
The "Solar Fitness & Wellness" unit is located on the top floor of the NEST building, behind two glass facades around eight metres high. In the open-plan room there are two saunas and a steam bath hanging from the ceiling. Underneath, gym-goers can use a wide range of equipment for strength and stamina training.

Empa and Eawag commissioned an intelligent building automation system that enables the energy needed for the new fitness and wellness facility to be precisely regulated. SAUTER’s existing collaboration in NEST enabled it to showcase its extensive expertise and innovative products in this latest project. Heat pump and solar energy In order to significantly reduce energy consumption, the planners opted for a high-temperature CO2 heat pump. Three photovoltaic systems on the facade and roof supply the remaining approx. 20,000 kWh of power required per year. A thermal solar facility also provides hot water for the centre’s showers. The entire installation is integrated in an overall automation solution from SAUTER. Digital interfaces connect all the third-party bus systems to the SAUTER automation system (EY-modulo 5 family). The higher-level modular building management solution – SAUTER Vision Center – enables staff to easily and effectively monitor and operate the various sub-systems. Putting sustainable energy to optimum use Visitors to the "Solar Fitness & Wellness" unit will enjoy ideal temperatures in the two saunas and steam bath. However, because the operating company does not want energy wasted on heating units that are not in use, the installation is linked to a reservation system. BACnet delivers data from the intelligent automation system straight to the high-temperature CO2 heat pump, which generates temperatures up to 130 °C and directs the heat to the various units. The electricity and heat meters integrated into the system via Modbus and M-Bus are already showing that the heat pump alone enables “Solar Fitness & Wellness” to reduce its power consumption by around two thirds. Heat and moisture recovered from the sauna and steam bath also allow ventilation losses to be halved. Finally, optimum thermal insulation minimises the heat lost in transmission.
© Empa/Reinhard Zimmermann
Automation is key SAUTER’s integrated building automation solution not only regulates the heating at the fitness and wellness facility but also the demand-led lighting, sunshading and room climate. Presence sensors integrated via DALI control most of the lighting, for example, thus reducing power consumption. When the sun is strong, the SMI-integrated blinds on the giant window facades respond immediately to prevent room temperatures from rising. A ventilation system in the changing rooms provides cooling fresh air after a hard workout or sauna session. Intelligent systems for sustainable wellness By running this unique concept of “Solar Fitness & Wellness”, Empa and Eawag hope to learn how renewable energy can fulfil the requirements of the energy-intensive wellness sector. They are relying on intelligent, efficient systems – both for energy production and building automation.
Visions of the future in Dübendorf In their modular research and innovation building NEST (Next Evolution in Sustainable Building Technologies) near Zurich, Empa and Eawag research, test, develop and validate new technologies, materials and systems – all under real conditions. Their close cooperation with partners from research, industry and public sector enables innovative building and energy technology to be launched on the market faster. http://nest.empa.ch

Smart sunshading for energy-efficient operation In June 2018, the services division of the mechanical and plant engineering group Cockerill Maintenance & Ingénierie (CMI) moved into their new premises in the Luxembourg spa town of Mondorf-les-Bains. SAUTER’s intelligent automation solution ensures energy-efficient operation in the new office building. During the planning phase, long before completion of the building, it received the HQE appraisal of “VERY GOOD” from the CERWAY certifying body. CMI enlisted the services of SAUTER and its modular product family SAUTER EY-modulo 5. This series supports communication with BACnet, KNX and DALI, for example. It also ensures futureproof integration of heating, ventilation and air conditioning as well as other third-party systems. The solution can be combined with the modular building management software SAUTER Vision Center. This allows the seamless exchange of data, easy-to-understand visualization and simple and intuitive operation of installations.
©QG CMI LUXEMBOURG The origins of the Belgian company CMI date back to 1817. Today, some 200 years later, CMI plans, integrates, refurbishes and maintains installations in the energy and defence sectors, the steel industry, the environmental field and in industry generally. Around 5,500 employees work for the company world-wide. For the new Luxembourg home in Mondorf-les-Bains of its International Services division, CMI opted for an integrated automation solution. Inside the new building that features large glass facades, operation will be energy-efficient with the climate and lighting reliably controlled. Multiple communication protocols integrated The new building provides office space over 3,500 m² for around 100 employees and an engineers’ room. CMI commissioned an intelligent solution facilitating an overview of all building technology systems across the location’s three levels. Compatibility with various communication protocols was also required.

Precise control of window blinds The completely glazed façade of the building means that sunshading is a particular challenge. Too much direct sunlight would result in excessive energy being consumed by the cooling system. SAUTER ecos504 room automation stations allow user-friendly regulation of temperature, lighting and sunshading in rooms. SAUTER ecoLink remote I/O modules guarantee reliable communication, even with the most far-flung corners of the building. Modular automation stations (SAUTER modu525) precisely control energy supply and distribution around the clock. SAUTER also added the plug-in communication modules SAUTER modu721 and modu731. These provide complete monitoring of energy consumption by allowing M-Bus meter networks to be connected for up to 200 heating or electricity meters. New build with small carbon footprint Full monitoring and control of resource requirements in-house at Mondorf-les-Bains is very important to CMI. Various meters are therefore fitted throughout the entire installation. Around 4,500 parameters in the building are constantly reported to the
©QG CMI LUXEMBOURG SAUTER Vision Center software. The data can be viewed by facility management staff at any time, thereby providing key information on operation. In the tranquil spa town of Mondorf-les-Bains, CMI’s new building with its attractive glass facade makes an extremely positive mark. Not only do employees benefit from state-of-the-art workstations but SAUTER’s intelligent building automation system also creates pleasant working conditions. By deploying energy-efficient technologies from SAUTER, this well-established company can keep its carbon footprint to a minimum. Following completion, the building will undergo an examination by CERWAY. It is expected to achieve an HQE appraisal of “EXCELLENT” for the construction phase – this is in keeping with the stated goal.

Innovative energy sources for a care facility network near Stuttgart Paulinenpflege Winnenden, near Stuttgart, offers people with disabilities a caring environment at eleven locations. After a successful refurbishment, a new cross-site automation and visualization solution from SAUTER helps Paulinenpflege save resources by using innovative energy sources.
Staff at Paulinenpflege Winnenden have been assisting children, young people and adults with disabilities for almost 200 years. In 2013, this facility steeped in tradition decided to upgrade its energy network and tasked SAUTER with this forward-looking project. The automation specialist’s extensive experience in energy efficient solutions for care institutions was key to securing the contract. Reducing energy consumption network-wide With the current systems being outdated and inefficient, one of the main goals was to cut resource consumption using a new and sustainable energy concept. The client opted for a renovation programme encompassing modern heat pumps, ice storage, waste heat usage and heating using wood chips.
Paulinenpflege can now count on an intuitive building management system – SAUTER Vision Center – to monitor and visualize all systems and energy flows at the four locations. The solution is web-based which means that technical staff can monitor each installation’s performance and make adjustments remotely. Furthermore, because SAUTER Vision Center has a modular structure, the overall system can be easily extended to include more premises later on. Sustainable heating and cooling The renovated buildings are heated and cooled with cutting-edge technology. One facility, for example, has a water tank underneath the building and uses three brine/water heat pumps to extract the

The school takes waste heat from its server room and heat from a solar/air absorber to keep temperatures warm indoors, even when it is very cold outside. The Paulinenhof, on the other hand, heats its buildings, greenhouses and residential units using a heating plant powered by wood chips. BACnet allows all components to be integrated seamlessly into SAUTER’s over-arching system. The Paulinenhof is extensive but SAUTER moduWeb Vision – the local visualization solution – allows the caretaker to constantly regulate the climate in the various buildings and make any corrections when necessary.
Assisting people with disabilities Paulinenpflege is a socially engaged institution with around 1,400 employees in Winnenden, near Stuttgart. The facility has been supporting people with disabilities since 1823. At eleven locations in total, Paulinenpflege offers services such as career training for young people with hearing and speech impairments, accommodation and workshops for around 1,500 people with disabilities. www.paulinenpflege.de
All the refurbished buildings are fitted with modular automation stations from the SAUTER EY-modulo 5 system family. These process the data from the temperature sensors and control all valves and actuators with maximum efficiency. The SAUTER solution therefore ensures that pupils, staff and residents always benefit from optimum room climate conditions, during both day and night. Furthermore, they are able to conserve resources.
