Colleagues recognised in prestigious awards

And the nominations are...
Teams across SaTH have been named as finalists in a number of external awards for work in personalised care for cancer patients, patient safety and staff learning, development and wellbeing.
Health Service Journal (HSJ) Patient Safety Awards
The Learning from Deaths Team are finalists in the HSJ Patient Safety Awards for Patient Safety Team of the Year for the implementation of new systems and processes to promote a positive culture of learning from deaths within the organisation.
The HSJ Patient Safety Awards help drive improvements in culture and quality across the NHS. These awards recognise and reward the hard-working teams and individuals who are striving to deliver improved patient care. The awards take place on 16 September.

Patient Experience Network National (PENNA) Awards
We have also been named as a finalist in the PENNA Awards, within the Personalisation of Care category, not once, but three times. This includes the Stroke Team for their Specialist Stroke Therapy Groups, the Trust’s reconditioning games initiative which encourage patients to keep moving, and for the Living Well sessions, which provides personalised care for cancer patients.
The PENNA are the first and only awards programme to recognise best practice in patient experience across all facets of health and social care in the UK. The ceremony will take place in October.
APNA
Asian Professionals National Alliance Awards
Congratulations to Zain Siddiqui who has been shortlisted for the Rising Star Award at the APNA Awards, which take place tonight.
An APNA representative said: “Being shortlisted is testament to your outstanding contributions and dedication to the NHS. Congratulations on being acknowledged and appreciated by your colleagues, organisations and all of us at APNA NHS for the outstanding work you do.”
Zain said: “I am deeply humbled and grateful for this acknowledgement. This recognition reflects not just my efforts but also the collective dedication of our team at NHS towards excellence in healthcare.”

Nursing Times Workforce Awards
We have also been announced as finalists in four Nursing Times Workforce Awards, including:
• Best Workplace for Learning and Development Award, not once but twice
• Preceptorship Programme of the Year
• Best Staff Wellbeing Initiative
The Nursing Times Workforce Awards shine a light on those excelling in nurse recruitment and retention, wellbeing and inclusion, plus many other areas linked to helping overcome the ongoing workforce challenge in health and social care. The awards will reward the individuals, teams and organisations that go above and beyond and set new standards of excellence in their field.

Louise Barnett, Chief Executive at The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH), said: “I’m really proud our work has been recognised externally and shortlisted for these prestigious awards. As we move into the next phase of our improvement journey, we will continue to strive towards providing excellent care for the communities we serve and making SaTH a great place to work.”

We’re listening
Your voice matters
We want our culture to be positive, compassionate, and inclusive – and we all have our part to play. Following your feedback, we have implemented a cultural transformation programme built on three flagship programmes which has brought about cultural improvements across all the People Promise elements, and themes. It is really important that you all share how you are feeling at work. Whether that’s through the annual Staff Survey, which will launch next month, regular People Pulse surveys, to your line manager or any other route.

Spotlight on: Talent Conversations (Appraisal)
At SaTH, we aim to ensure you are able to develop to your full potential and have access to the right support to help you be the best version of you at work. A Talent Conversation (Appraisal) is an opportunity to discuss you, your career and make plans for the year ahead. Following feedback on the paperwork we use for these conversations, the Trust has made some slight changes including:
• Fewer questions/pages in the document
• Links to more resources to help you have a more in-depth conversation about the things that are most important to you
• Simplified colleague feedback forms
Do you want to share your team improvements following feedback?

As well as volunteering within the clinical setting, the group will have a number of evening masterclasses, including interview preparation, a communication workshop, simulated training and 1:1 career conversation. To date the programme has enabled over 80% of participants to secure employment at SaTH or a training place in a health-related course.
The closing date for applications is Monday 30 September 2024. If you are interested in joining the programme and hearing of success stories from previous volunteers, visit our website

Please do take the time to recognise our housekeeping colleagues in your areas.

What is Donate 2 Motivate?
We are on a mission to improve patient experience by sourcing clothing for our patients to motivate them to get dressed and get out of bed!
What you can do to help
We would love if colleagues at SaTH can join the movement and donate any unwanted clothes to the donation boxes at both sites (purple wheelie bins at RSH in link corridor opposite Ward 25 and PRH in the old league of friends next to Amazon lockers).
We are looking for the following items which should be in good condition and generally suitable for those aged 60+, we are looking for a variety of summer and winter wear:
• T-shirts & blouses
• Cardigans and jumpers
• Skirts and dresses
• Trousers & joggers
• Pyjamas

What is deconditioning?
Deconditioning (noun, medical): The process of losing physical strength through being ill, injured, or not active. Deconditioning is a complex change that occurs in a patient's body following long periods of inactivity or bed rest. This a ects a patient's physical and mental health and ultimately results in functional decline, prolonged hospital admissions and increased mortality.
Why does this matter in the context of donating clothing? Long periods of time in bed wearing a hospital gown is not good for recovery. Providing patients with comfortable, warm clothes during their admission could motivate them to get up out of bed and mobilise. If you have any questions,

Going off the block for SaTH Charity
SaTH Charity has organised an abseil from the top of the Ward Block on Saturday 21 September to raise funds to support patients and their families across Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin and Mid-Wales, in conjunction with the League of Friends and Lingen Davies Cancer Fund.
Sophie and Lydia
Two brave members of the Communications Team are taking part. Lydia and Sophie decided to take on the challenge to raise money for the SaTH Charity diabetes fund as it is a fund close to their hearts
Lydia said of the challenge: “Many of our services and wards have dedicated charitable funds under the SaTH Charity umbrella, this enables you to support an area or service within our hospitals that is close to your heart. SaTH Charity supports the hospitals to purchase state-of-the-art medical equipment as well as enhancing and improving patient experience and comfort. In addition, the funds raised provide additional training for staff and fund medical research.”
If you can, donate to their JustGiving page.

Susie, Karen and Ali
Susie Sutton (Advanced Nurse Practitioner), Karen Jackman (Project Manager) and Mr Ali Ehsanullah (Urology Consultant) are representing the Urology Team and raising funds for the Urology Charitable fund.
The team hope to raise money towards the purchase of a specialist laser, which treats kidney stones and enlarged prostates.
Dr Ali said: “They are really excited for this development and the potential benefit it will give to our patients”.
To donate to the Urology team’s adventure, visit their JustGiving page

Kate, Rachel and Poppy
Three members of the Public Participation team are also braving the heights.
Kate who fears heights is the Community Engagement Manager at SaTH. She said: “Anyone who knows me will know that I’m not that keen on heights, and I didn’t know that an abseil from the ward block at RSH to raise money for the hospital was on my bucket list... I’m currently standing on things to try and get a bit better at heights!”

Poppy said of the abseil: “I have chosen to fundraise for the Radiotherapy department at SaTH. During Covid, they provided such caring support to my dad who was going through cancer treatment.
“More recently, I have had the privilege of supporting the delivery of the Volunteer to Career scheme within the Radiotherapy department. Having met the staff from the area, I have been able to see why my dad speaks so highly of the care he received.
Rachel said: “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to abseil from the ward block at RSH and raise money for two really important funds. Recently a close family member was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and he will be cared for at RSH. Raising money for the haematology fund will support the care we can provide in the future. My wonderful Dad was diagnosed with dementia at a young age and we navigate him living with dementia daily. Raising money for this fund will support patients coming into hospital who are living with dementia.”

Running for research
Three Members of the Research and Innovation team are running the Lake Vyrnwy Half Marathon Together.
Julie, Hannah, and Laura are taking on the challenge of running lake Vyrnwy half marathon on Sunday 15 September. They are running to raise money for SaTH Charity’s Research and Innovation fund.
The Research and Innovation department at SaTH support’s commercial and noncommercial clinical trials across Generic medicine, Oncology, and Women’s and Children’s. Raising money for clinical research is essential for driving medical progress, improving patient care, and addressing critical health challenges. It helps provide researchers with the resources needed to explore new ideas, test new treatments, and ultimately improve the health and wellbeing of people worldwide.

Laura said “Raising money for our R&I Charity can help us further support training and development of healthcare professionals in research. Also, to support our focus on public and patient involvement and engagement in our trust, ensuring that research conducted is relevant and beneficial to our local community.
“Please consider donating to our cause – anything big or small is greatly appreciated.”
Julia Clarke, Director of Public Participation said “We are so grateful for the Research and Innovation team taking on another challenge to fundraise for their area, it’s very inspiring to see a team come together to improve patient experience. We wish them all the best for the run.”

Thank you
Last night my son had a drop seizure at home and we needed to come to A&E as he had gash on his eyebrow, my son has severe learning difficulties and Autism, we arrived at 5pm.
I just wanted to say thank you for the amazing treatment you gave us, the lovely lady in pink Kate had know my son from a previous position and was absolutely excellent with him, she arranged for us to be rushed through to see the triage nurse who was also excellent and her assistant Alison.
We were taken through to be glued to a great lady called Linda who had a trainee Paramedic with her, they had another lady Lisa who helped to stick his cut with steristrips and glue.
We were on our way home by 6.30pm so thank you so much.
