¡ Bienvenidos!

Park Hill Park Open House

¡Casa Abuerta de Parque Park Hill!

We’ve gathered your feedback since April through in-person events and three online surveys. With your input, we have refined the draft preferred framework to create a final preferred framework.

Today, we want to show you the conclusion of the visioning process!

Denver Parks and Recreation (DPR) is working with the community to convert a former golf course into a 155-acre public park in the heart of the city. The site will be the largest addition to Denver’s park system in more than a century.

Guiding Principles

Guiding Principles have been refined per your feedback!

We incorporated your feedback throughout the process to develop these final guiding principles. The principles will shape the plan as future detail is developed in collaboration with the community and as the park is constructed. In addition to guiding the communities aspirations, and expectations for the project, these principles will serve as success metrics for park features, amenities, and implementation.

Fostering Belonging & Joy…

By prioritizing health, celebration, and inclusive public spaces that welcome people of all backgrounds, ages, and abilities, where everyone can seek joy, cultural connection, and respite.

Celebrating Denver’s Culture and Honoring History…

Through public art, community-led storytelling, and cultural programming that repairs historical harm (particularly against communities of color), builds community identity, and fosters authentic representation.

A Place for the Serene and the Vibrant…

In a park that serves everyday active uses – from the organized to the adventurous –and everyday passive recreational uses –focused on connection to nature and each other, while also supporting larger athletic, community, and cultural events.

Building a Modern Resilient Park…

That provides an ecological sanctuary through native landscapes, biodiversity, water-wise design, habitat creation, and climate adaptation thus connecting environmental health with human health and mental wellbeing.

Creating your Framework

We heard what you said about each Big Idea. With your feedback, we created one preferred framework that merges the most popular uses and greatest neighborhood need. The ideas below align with the guiding principles and helped shape the framework plan

A Once In A Century Park!

The City and County of Denver’s Parks & Recreation (DPR) Department is working closely with the community to convert a former golf course into a 155-acre public park in the heart of the city. The site, which operated as a private golf course from the 1930s until 2018, will be ecologically restored and redesigned as the largest addition to Denver’s park system in more than a century. Park Hill Park will soon stand as the city’s fourth-largest park—providing a

resource in an area long underserved by premier parks and greenways.

Circulation and Access

siTe sysTems

The hierarchy of circulation follows park program use and destination. All major areas are connected through accessible paths. A primary circulation loop connects all key experiences and program areas. Parking is strategically located on the edges of the park, which is also near major activity spaces.

Park Ecology

naTural sysTems

Ecosystem restoration and habitat enhancement drives design ideas. A range of native habitat types are proposed, providing wildife habitat, pollinator forage, and ecosystem services. Resilient native plantings are well-adapted to Denver’s semi-arid climate and reduces irrigation demand, while providing respite in nature for visitors.

Park Hydrology & Stormwater

WaTer sysTems

Capturing and cleansing stormwater is a key element of the project. The approach follows existing overall site grading and drainage to treat 100% of stormwater on site. The intermittent stormwater ribbon collects runoff from all areas of the site to create an educational, ecological, and interactive experience. There are several integrated stormwater strategies, including parking lot green infrastructure, a flow-through wetland, building runoff and capture, and vegetative filtering.

Planning & Design

The comprehensive evaluation of a park site’s physical, environmental, social, and regulatory conditions to inform and guide the design process.

The collaborative process of defining the goals, values, desired outcomes, and establishing a preferred framework for the project that will guide concept design.

The stage where preliminary ideas and spatial layouts are developed into a detailed illustrative plan that explore and communicate the design direction.

Initial design ideas are developed into a more detailed site plan that define the park’s layout, spatial organization, planting strategies, lighting, and materials.

Schematic design is further refined, specifying materials, plant selections, grading, structures, and construction details to produce a comprehensive, coordinated plan ready for construction documentation.

Detailed drawings, specifications, and instructions are prepared to guide contractors in the accurate construction and implementation of the park design.

Process of obtaining approvals from relevant regulatory agencies before construction can begin.

The process of sourcing, selecting, and contracting vendors, suppliers, or contractors to provide the materials, services, or labor needed to execute the project
