WHAT'S COOKING?
In the Spirit of Inquiry, Hope and Optimism Sharing with one another builds a foundation for us all. JAMES COOK
I
t is often frustrating as a parent and an educator to
always know what to do. It is doubly frustrating when a major part of our indecision is too much or not enough information. I believe we must share with each other our questions as well as our answers; full transparency in all situations. One of our greatest contributions to a difficult crisis is to hit the restart button. Several minds working together can bring a sense of sanity to a problem beyond a single individual. I have learned through the years the

necessity of processing together. Tough issues seem to lose their harshness when we collaborate. To grasp the facts, the most essential and accurate information, allows us together to do it right. We need imagination, conversation and interaction to help deal with some of our most unpleasant realities. The end result of our students’ experiences, will be the foundation they use to build their futures. We must keep the spirit of inquiry, hope and optimism alive for them. This is what families, schools and athletic programs do well together. 2

ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT
St. Pius X Athletic Department A program rich in history and tradition.
T
he St. Pius X Athletic Department’s vision is to instill confidence, sportsmanship and leadership skills enabling our student athletes to succeed beyond their high school years. St. Pius X Student-Athletes are representatives of the institution and are held at a high moral standard with an emphasis on sportsmanship, teamwork and learning to win with pride and lose with dignity. St. Pius X athletic programs have a rich history in our community with 83 New Mexico State Titles. In combination with academics, spirituality, and fine arts, athletics help to provide our students with a well-rounded and traditional high school experience. St. Pius X Athletics is comprised of 47 teams with almost 70% of the student body playing multiple sports, resulting in over 400 athletic events every year. The St. Pius X Athletic Department is comprised of James Cook ’83, David Sullivan, Juanita Marquez, Ashley Turcotte ’07 and Jennifer Maldonado ’91. James Cook ’83, Director of Athletics: Coach Cook is a 1983 graduate of St. Pius X High School. He began his coaching career at SPX in 1991, coaching boys basketball for 5 years and football 1 season. Coach Cook was hired as a full-time teacher in 1992, teaching Government. He is in his 22nd year as the St. Pius X Director of Athletics. As the Director of Athletics, Coach Cook’s role is to make sure the coaches and athletes have everything they need in order to be successful within the guidelines of the Archdiocese of Santa Fe and the NMAA. While there are many challenges in running an athletic department, one of the biggest is making tough decisions when it comes to players and coaches, “The most difficult part of my job, is when I have to dismiss a coach or tell a student athlete he/she can’t play. Parents, coaches and students are often focused on the micro view of their child or situation. I often have to look at the broader view of every situation and make tough decisions.” However, the rewards often outweigh the difficulties, “After all of these years, I still enjoy watching the games and
practices, but most of all, I love witnessing the progression of our students from freshmen to seniors.” Coach Cook credits his love of sports to his biggest influences, Rick Davis, Bill Duffy, Lincoln Galassini, Ray Giannini and most of all, his father. Ashley Turcotte ’07, Administrative Assistant to the Director of Athletics : Miss Turcotte is a 2007 graduate of St. Pius X High School. After graduation, Miss Turcotte attended Northern Arizona University. She began working at St. Pius X in 2011 in a part time role while finishing her undergraduate studies. She is the liaison and main point of contact between coaches, athletes, parents, academics, the Director of Athletics and the NMAA. Miss Turcotte feels that the biggest reward in working at SPX is the students and coaches, “I love getting to know all of our kids. It’s an amazing experience to watch them interact with one another and grow together as a team. I also feel honored to work with the best coaches in New Mexico, many of whom I call friends.” Miss Turcotte is currently pursuing a master’s degree of Science in Professional Counseling from Grand Canyon University with an emphasis in addiction. tion, she attended The University of New Mexico where she obtained a duel degree in Political Science and English. She acquired fundraising, event production and marketing experience working for several non-profits in Seattle, WA including The United Way of King County, Lifelong AIDS Alliance and Treehouse for Kids. Upon returning to Albuquerque, she began volunteering at St. Pius X High School as a member, and later President of the Alumni Council. In 2014, Mrs. Maldonado began working in the Advancement office as the Alumni Relations Manager, building and fostering relationships with SPX Alumni. In 2017, she transitioned to Athletics to focus on new endeavors to engage alumni and market the athletic program. Her duties include coordinating the Alumni Games in the fall and in the spring, the Annual Sartan Open Golf Tournament and publication of Est. 1956. Mrs. Maldonado’s success in her job is attributed to her love for the school, “Pius gave me more than just an education. The values, beliefs and friendships that I took with me have carried me though my life and made me who I am today. I had the best high school experience during my four years at SPX. I hope and pray that my own children will one day experience the love I have for this amazing school!”

In celebration of the 50th Sartan football season, the St. Pius X Athletic Department honored members of the 1968 team during halftime at the Homecoming Game. Members of the ’68 team stormed the field and were the highlight of the halftime festivities. The 1968 season consisted of only 6 games, with 2 wins and 4 losses. The highpoint of the season was game 5 against St. Michael’s in Santa Fe. The Sartans were 0-4 and St. Michael’s was favored by 20 points per the Albuquerque Journal. The Sartans scored in the first half, and a stout defense shut out St. Michael’s 7-0. Michael Heaphy ’69 stated, “We are just a bunch of

Coach Segura began his coaching career at St. Pius X High School as a volunteer assistant coach for the freshman team, hired by Head Varsity Coach Todd Resch in 1999. After graduating from college, Coach Segura wanted to take a hiatus before beginning graduate school and felt that coaching high school basketball would be a good opportunity. He coached the boys freshman team three of his four years as an assistant coach before being offered the head coaching position in the spring of 2003. In his first year coaching varsity, Coach Segura was blessed to have Coach Frank Dooley on staff as the varsity assistant. Coach Segura recalls about working with Coach Dooley, “Coach Dooley is a multiple state championship coach and is in the NMAA Hall of Honor, and as successful as he was a coach, he is a better person. He was invaluable my first season and I still consider him a mentor to this day.” After two decades of coaching basketball at SPX, Coach Segura remains a legend in his own right. PHIL GRIEGO 31 YEARS AS A COACH 23 YEARS AS A HEAD COACH AT SPX SPX RECORD: 404-191 STATE TITLES: 3 DISTRICT TITLES: 12
Coach Phil Griego is in his 23rd year of coaching girls basketball at St. Pius X High School. He began his coaching career at Cibola High School in the late 80s coaching the boys freshman team. One year later, APS terminated the freshman basketball program and he moved to varsity as an assistant coach for one season. The next fall, Coach Griego was named the JV Coach where he remained for six years. Coach Griego aspired to be a head coach, and at the time, APS had a rule that the head coach of a program had to be a certified teacher employed by the school. At the end of his fifth year coaching the JV team at Cibola, Coach Griego applied for the vacant boys head coach position at SPX. He was a top contender for the job, however, was not able to fulfill the requirement of being a certified teacher. One year later, he received a call from Athletic Director, Jorge Tristani, inquiring if he were still interested in leading a basketball program. At the end of his interview, he was offered the position of head coach of the Girls Basketball Program. His first response was to say, “No way!” At which time, AD Tristani posed the question, “Why not? You

told me you wanted to lead a team to the PIT and win a championship. What does it matter if it’s boys or girls?” Coach Griego decided to accept the position, and the rest is history. He has been at SPX for 22 years, and all of the players, coaches and extended St. Pius X family have significantly impacted his life in so many different ways. Coach Griego believes that he is a better coach and a better person for the experiences he has had at SPX. Coach Griego would like to especially thank Assistant Coach Kevin Hillsey for his
dedication over the last 19 years, “I’m not sure I would have survived all of those years without his expertise, trust and friendship. Coaching basketball has been very rewarding, but the friendships that developed over the course of my career are the greatest benefits. I love that two former players are on my current staff, Robyn Dow ’98 (JV) and Emily Dieterichs ’15 (C Team). This has been a dream job, and I’ve been living my dream. It’s been a great ride, and I’m so proud to be the head coach of The St. Pius X Girls Basketball Program.” 2019 Girls Varsity Basketball Team, Assistant Coach Dereck Atencio, Head Coach Phil Griego and Assistant Coach Kevin Hillsey.
