SWINDON,UK - Mixed use masterplan promoting tourism CONCEPT: ECO CUL TOURISM “Where Heritage & Culture meets eco - Tourism “ The main asset of Swindon is that it’s a town surrounded by some of England’s finest countryside and famous attractions. Enriched with history, museums including the award winning Steam Museum, and an art gallery. Our Vision of master plan aims to introduce eco tourism while preserving the identity & exhibits the cultural & historical accumulation of Swindon. Our aim is to restore and enhance the character and history of Swindon to be one must visit area for locals and even global visitors in the region. ACADEMIC PROJECT : 2022 Master plan phase -Worked on team

DESIGN OBJECTIVES

ABOUT THE SITE Regional Context Our location Swindon is strategically located at the confluence of Oxford and Bristol . It’s is also surrounded by England’s finest countryside such as ashbury, Lyneham , Ninety , Avebury and many more . Swindon town centre is also equidistant from the county boundaries of Berkshire and Gloucestershire, both being 8 miles away. The border with Oxfordshire is slightly closer, being around 5 miles away.

Creating seamless linkages for various types of users that will help to improve connectivity in the area.

Integrating public spaces within the area with design facilities to become an interactive social space.

Site Context Our given site is the area surrounding Swindon Railway Station. With the railway dividing the site , we have the north of our site where the oasis is located and the southern part where Swindon’s HA (Heritage Action Zone) is located. The aim of the HAZ is to exploit the central location and historic atmosphere of the Railway Village to create an appealing, pedestrian friendly neighbourhood.

ACCESS AND CONNECTION

BLUE AND GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE

The railway divides our site into two halves, north and south, resulting in inadequate linkage between the two areas. At the moment, three routes connect the two regions (two of which are pedestrian roads), with only one road on the west side available to automobiles. Because that route has a significant volume of traffic and is narrow, it was found to be crowd

Analysis • When approaching the property from the train station, the greatest green area available to town centre inhabitants, employees, and tourists is GWR park. • Green links on the green spine to the north are possible. • Residential areas lack green spaces and gardens adjacent to their homes. A covered canal currently functions as a road, however it is under utilized. • Many fertile apple trees may be seen to the north of the site.

Secondary route

Tunnel way

Secondary route to railway village

Tunnel way

PRIMARY ROAD TUNNEL SECONDARY ROAD

TUNNEL The tunnel near the station is dimly lighted, and there is a high wall beside the road with graffiti on it, indicating that security has to be strengthened. Residential Pavements and driveways are divided and quite safe in the residential neighborhood to the south. However, in order to pass across, they will require vehicular assistants as there is a main road across which is dangerous and inconvenient for pedestrians.

Potential green links Existing Canal ( closed )

SITE PLAN

Access and Movement Plan

The master plan is also zoned out according to different land-use such as residential , commercial, mixed use , institutional, holistic buildings etc. According to the contextual analysis done. Connections through different street typology is been done on site to provide easy and flexible flow even with the railway line is dividing the site. We introduced the apple cider for the tourist with the workshops arranged for them. As per the vision the master plan further connects the heritage trail and thus emphasizes on attracting more tourists into the site.

To increase connectivity of the site to the surrounding areas, we took the roads of the surroundings and connected them to the site, thus creating access points. We also modified the Great Western Way to be pedestrian and cyclist friendly, in order to encourage the local residents to enter the site. Land-use Plan

Movement Plan

The proposed land use plan consists of a high-density mixed-use spaces. We have proposed the existing brownfield of the northern part of the site into residential plots with different residence building typologies. The building at the side of the canal and roads are proposed as high-density mixed-use buildings with active commercial space on the ground floor.

VILNIUS, LITHUANIA CONCEPT: YOUTHFUL VILNIUS Creating an urban development which attracts youth along with maintaining and enhancing green infrastructure and economy.

Research question? How could we attract younger generation with the infrastructure and opportunities by creating a safe, social and interactive identity to the neighbourhood and public realm?

ACADEMIC PROJECT : 2023 1st phase-Masterplan worked in team of 5 2nd phase- Solo project focusing on public realm

Site Location The site is located in Vilnius ,Lithuania. The site is located in the south of the UNESCO-listed old town Vilnius. Redline boundary area – 74ha

-Regional scale Green links that are present throughout the site on a larger scale, and what are we going to attempt to connect to, according to my larger perspective.

The site consists of the railway station on North which is soon to be developed as one of the major transit stations of Vilnius. The southern side of the site is fully surrounded by green wildlife reserves. The site consists of abounded green spaces which is the perk of this settlement.

-When viewed more closely, the green areas are not as well connected as they were when viewed on a broader scale, thus we had to suggest creating green corridors to connect the various green places on the property.

Legends

One of the main challenges from local issues is related to the mental health .Lithuania lies in second position having highest suicide rate. One of the main reason behind the issue poor metal health is historical trauma, unemployment and poor access to mental health issues. So we want to create an environment that includes community and improves mental health. Vilnius has a variety of unmanaged green-spaces and a number of wildlife reserves, thereforewe wish to devise ways to protect and improve biodiversity there. According to the demographic survey, the majority of young people are moving to Europe and settling there because there aren’t many decent job opportunities there. On the other hand, Vilnius’s Information technology sector is thriving. So, we want to expand these industries and create jobs to draw in a younger demographic. Vilnius is home to prestigious universities, each of which has a unique impact on culture and the arts. We wish to enhance the educational sector’s art and culture in order to draw in moreyoung people. Due to the lack of wetlands in the area caused by modernity eradicating all natural wetlands, the majority of species are on the verge of extinction. In order to safeguard persons facing biodiversity and to include community involvement in system protection, we aim to provide a thriving environment.

“ How could we attract younger generation with the infrastructure and opportunities by creating a safe, social and interactive identity to the neighborhood and public realm?”

1.5 MASTERPLAN

Conceptual Framework The main vision of the masterplan wa to create urban forest for youth. Based on indepth research of vilnius we found the main issues and challeges which helped to devlop vision and the framework . The main objective is inlisted in the first layered circle wheres how we going to achieve are described as follows.

CHARACTER AREAS

GREEN AND BLUE INFRASTRUCTURE

BUS ROUTES

STREET NETWORK The development will introduce several new green spaces in addition to retaining and improving existing green infrastructure and connecting to the surrounding network. These will increase the ecological value of the site while also providing social and recreational opportunities. 1. Linear Park running east-west in the central part of the site connecting it to the surrounding area and incorporating areas for play and exercise alongside medicinal plantations to purify the air quality and improve the microclimate. 2. The Waterfronts connecting the wetlands are designed to support the water management system, creating an attractive promenade along the neighbourhood gardens. 3. Wetlands / habitat corridors are designed to support the natural drainage along the natural slope and also to retain and enhance the ecological value of the site by connecting the green and blue infrastructure to every neighbourhood.

BLOCK DEVELOPMENT

The block that I have chosen for detail development of public realm is around the center of the development whose landuse is for residential and community spaces. The block is well connected with secondary route and have green parks around it.It consist of old art institute on south which we have retained in our masterplan.

Design Objectives 1. Create job opportunities 2. Encourage shared spaces that promotes Interaction and affordability 3. Active life style incorporating green spaces 4. Create flexible vibrant public spaces

Why ? In Slough, the population grew from about 140,200 in 2011 to 158,500 in 2021, a 13.0% rise. This is higher than England’s general population growth of 6.6%, as the country’s population increased by about 3.5 million to 56,489,800.If we see the demographic data as shown in Fig 4.2 the highest population is between 35-49 age groups which in the next 20 years could rapidly increase the number of senior population of Slough. This trend seeks the importance of doing this research in Slough to make it more walkable and age friendly enhancing active aging in the city.

Workshop 1

Self Walk Observation

The first workshop is carried out with the local senior people of Slough. It is implemented with the help of the foundation named “Slough Senior Group”. The group consists of the elderly people aged between 60-85 years old and they do different activities on a weekly basis in Slough Council Hall. Aim of the workshop: • To establish local senior perception towards walkability of their neighborhood. • To know how they commute for their basic needs. • To know what things motivate them to stay active. • To establish how they tackle social isolation.

Point A , High Street

There is no separating lane between Most of the elderly people are spotted around the bus stop of Slough and pedestrian and vehicular area which the area where the street furnitures are placed in which helped to analyze is making the area unsafe for elder- that street furniture helps to welcome elderly people in public spaces. ly people to walk in

Findings -Elderly people spend more time indoors due to their physical disabilities even though they want to go to public spaces .

Street view:There is no enough seating spaces placed on public spaces .No tactile pavement is present in the streets

-Community activities really motivate them to stay active not just physically but also mentally. Also the design of neighborhood matters how actively senior people spend time in public spaces. -Shopping spaces and restaurant spaces are one of the main public spaces where they want to spend time. Vibrant spaces invite senior people and make them feel socially inclusive just by sitting and relaxing. -As they becomes aged the outdoors to indoor time increases. -They tend to visit public spaces in weekly basis.

The top floor of the building is dedicated to a common Café that commands the best views of the city and the mountains beyond. The outdoor area of the café is landscaped to provide shade and block the wind, literally crowning the building with greenery.

01.M+P PROJECTS

To avoid blocking the views from inside, the balcony railing is designed to be indiscernible – requiring the members to be extremely slender. Array of vertical supports provide necessary rigidity to the delicate railing system. These vertical supports fan upwards to open up the higher floors to better views – resulting in the facade with radiating exoskeletal members.

I was involved in modeling coordination drawings, specifying and checking the utilities of overall building using sketch up. The lower basement level was full used for utility purpose which consist of water tank ,fire tank and electrical rooms.

I joined ACE Team at its initial conceptual design stage and worked till its schematic design development stage. I was mainly in charge of its initial test fit plannings.Firstly , I did international casestudies of institutional high rise campuses .Since the programs of building was large and footing was less which led us to plan in high rise. I made several test fit plans and worked on mass and void analysis with several options where client chose Ushaped massing and develop form on it.

As seen covered with a large skylight, the atrium is animated with staircases further intensifying the daily activities while making it a social heart of building CONCEPTUAL PROPOSAL-THE PORTAL The main concept is design needs to get adapt with the changes occurring in business, social and technological realms . Concept is driven in 5 important “C’s”: Collaboration, Connectivity, Comfort, Convenience, Community. Two different faculties of management AIMPU and business studies AIBS are connected with grand common space.Parkings are kept on lower levels and common program like library and auditoriums are kept at upper levels.

01.M+P PROJECTS

GROUND FLOOR

The more frequently used spaces such as classrooms are closer to the ground. In contrast, the low intensity use spaces such as library, lecture hall, computer lab and Incubation center crowns the building. This programmatic separation is gelled together with spill-out spaces and break rooms that are evenly interspersed throughout the levels around an atrium.

THE GRAND COMMON MULTIPURPOSE SPACE BETWEEN TWO DEPARTMENTS This atrium is expressed to the outside world through a “portal” – a symbolic and literal gateway to this academic institution. The Porto-atrium also functions as environmental feature by pooling cooler air from north.
