Mark Your Calendars for Our Lenten Study! Between the Testaments: The 400 Years Between Malachi and Matthew Six‐week Bible Study · March 13/14 thru April 17/18

It is a mistake to lump the historical context of all Scripture into “Bible Times.” Culture and socio‐political realities in the New Testament were as different from the Old Testament as Sardis Road is from whatever was here 400 years ago. Understand Scripture more fully and more clearly by learning what happened and who did it in the 400 years between the testaments.

2019 Stewardship Campaign Update Kim Weber

Good news, Sardis!

At the time of this writing, we have received slightly over $1.6 million in pledged commitments. However, the not‐ so‐good news is we are still missing a significant number of commitments from previously pledging, active members. If these members were to renew their pledges at the same level, we would exceed 2018!

With these additional proceeds, we hope to fulfill much of the Sardis wish list:

 Hire a full‐time Director of Children’s Ministry  Bring in mission speakers who will help us learn how we each can be missionaries in our own context  Partner with Families Forward to work with struggling families at Rama Road Elementary  Restart Stephen Ministry (training members to provide pastoral care for members in need)  Replace flooring and lighting in Fellowship Hall to make it a better place for worship and for play

We are almost there! Now is the time to think about Equipping Sardis for God’s Mission and the impact we can make. Is your pledge still outstanding? A pledge made today can still have an effect on our plans for 2019. Just email jennifer.childers@sardis.org with your 2019 pledge.

Lay Ministry

The Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve. New Year, New Mission Opportunities

Open the door to a new opportunity in 2019. Sardis and Charlotte Family Housing (formerly Family Promise) invite you to volunteer one time this year in their mission of working to solve family homelessness. They are housing families, building relationships and empowering change.

Our Sardis partnership includes our annual benevolence funding and our privilege to provide and deliver three simple meals at Elizabeth House shelter once per quarter to help families save money while promoting their self‐ sufficiency and dignity. Our next turn and suggested items for 3‐4 families (up to 10 people) are below. To sign up, please visit www.sardis.org or contact Sheri Bartel at sbartel@windstream.net.

The Missions Ministry would like to thank everyone for taking time to serve and support our neighbors experiencing homelessness. We cannot partner with local agencies without ALL of you. Thank you.

Sunday, February 24: Baked chicken + peas Tuesday, February 26: Meatloaf + mashed potatoes Thursday, February 28: Chili + salad + chocolate pudding

Tackle Hunger on February 3

Please bring your contributions for our Souper Bowl of Caring collection on Sunday, February 3. The collection will benefit the Urban Ministry Center Soup Kitchen, feeding Charlotte’s homeless every day. The UMC Soup Kitchen, which served 99,230 lunches last year, is open to all. Neighbors do not have to share their names, participate in any programs, or even say thank you. They feed the hungry, but have found that the Soup Kitchen is a crucial first step to getting neighbors on the path to end homelessness.

Our January American Red Cross Blood Drive registered 25 donors and collected 24 pints of blood. Our team also registered a new first time donor!

Thank you for your gifts of time and support. The American Red Cross truly appreciates your generosity, and the patients who have benefited from the blood collected at Sardis’ blood drive are beyond grateful.

Please put our future blood drive dates in your calendars, and plan to come save some more lives:  April 7  July 21  October 27

Register to be a donor or volunteer at www.sardis.org or contact Sheri Bartel at sbartel@windstream.net.

Sardis Weekday School 2019‐2020: Registration Is Underway!

Are you looking for a half‐day preschool program for your child? The Sardis Weekday School offers a program for children ages 1‐5 from 9 a.m. ‐ 1 p.m. We have a variety of class offerings from 2‐5 days a week. Did you know that we offer a Transitional Kindergarten program for students who will not meet the kindergarten cutoff date or who need a bridge year to reinforce their skill set? Our program offers a curriculum of hands on learning through exploration and sensory experiences while enhancing the building blocks of learning. We also offer weekly and biweekly music with our music and movement teacher, Spanish with our Spanish teacher and our storyteller who visits us monthly. We have many special guests who stop by to offer educational aspects such as dentists, librarians and community helpers (police officers). We expand our program with a six‐week/half‐day summer program (registration to come in early spring) led by our preschool teachers.

If you are interested in enrolling we would be happy to give you a tour of our program. You can visit our website www.sardisweekdayschool.org, contact us directly at 704.366.9681, or email our director, Elizabeth Angerson at Elizabeth.angerson@sardis.org.

Mission Trip to Kinston, NC : March 24 ‐ 30

Follow your call, and other Sardis members, who will be traveling to Kinston, NC to help with much needed rebuilding after last year’s hurricane. We are working with Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) and will be staying at First Presbyterian Church in Kinston. Your cost for this trip will be $33 per person per day. An additional $17 per person per day will be covered by Sardis budgeted mission funds.

Anyone who wants to go will have a job on the team! We will need builders, cooks, devotion leaders, listeners to interact with the families in the area, etc. If you cannot stay all week, come when you can. We will be assigned to a specific job location in early March.

We will meet on February 6 at 7:00 p.m. in the small dining room to discuss further details of the trip and watch two short videos recommended by PDA.

Questions? Please contact Glenn Crossley (scrossley@carolina.rr.com) or Brenda McKay (brendamckay58@yahoo.com). 8 The Communicator ~ February 2019
