...and to Welcome Home, your (Award-Winning!) go-to-guide for Life in the Saratoga Region!
Saratoga TODAY has big news… We’re celebrating our 20th Anniversary this year!
I remember doing the first spiral bound edition of Welcome Home, back in 2007 (!!) when we were a new company (and so much younger!) and bursting at the seams with excitement and enthusiasm over wanting to be the Best Source of Local News in the area, and luckily (yes we’re 20 years older, and not all of us are still here) we still have that same desire today! And by the looks of all this content and ALL these advertisers, I’d say we’re still doing a great job!
So… whether you’re just moving here or are lucky enough to call Saratoga home, I hope you use and enjoy this issue!
Saratoga is (and always will be!) an awesome place to live (year ‘round even!) and we would like to help you around…
Saratoga TODAY has put together everything you need to know in this one handy informative community guide… after all, providing local news is (still) what we do best!
If this is your first time looking through Welcome Home, please note that the entire magazine is color-coded, making it quick and easy to navigate your way through the pages.
• Would you like the phone number of your local town clerk? Browse the TOWNS OF SARATOGA COUNTY section.
• Need day care for your newly rescued dog? We have a PET SECTION.
• Need to call the school district in your area? No problem, turn to the PUBLIC SCHOOLS section.
• Is mom or dad getting older and needing more resources? Flip to the SENIOR CARE section.
• New to the area and looking for running clubs, yoga studios or healthy places to shop? Check out the HEALTHY SARATOGA section.
• Looking for a new restaurant to try? Check out our LOCAL DINING GUIDE. So… browse the book, mark your favorite pages, and enjoy life in our little corner of the world.
As always, I must close with a big THANK YOU! to our advertisers. Without them, we would not be able to provide these beautiful (and informative!) publications - free of charge - to our tens of thousands of readers.
Please mention us by name when visiting them... Saratoga TODAY’s Welcome Home Magazine.
If you have an idea for a category not listed in our guide, let me know and we will include it in the 2027 edition of Welcome Home.
Enjoy life in the Saratoga Region!

Live Like You’re On Vacation is a multi-faceted recruitment initiative geared toward tourists who already love visiting Saratoga, the Adirondacks, and Lake George, as well as professionals considering relocation. By featuring the three regions, it showcases the variety of opportunities available to residents in this four-season destination.
“When you live in the Saratoga, Adirondack, and Lake George region, you are truly living like you’re on vacation,” said Todd Shimkus, president, Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce. “From historic horse racing to millions of acres of protected forests to the Queen of American lakes, we have all of this – and much more – right in our backyard.”
The campaign is aimed at attracting new talent to the region by providing a glimpse at what living here looks like along with highlighting some of the main attractions that make the region so unique. Local Chambers work collaboratively with employers looking to hire staff from outside of the region. More information is available at saratoga.org/live/live-like-youre-on-vacation/.

The Saratoga Farmers’ Market is an award-winning, year-round market with an array of locally grown and sourced products.
For 48 years, the Saratoga Farmers’ Market has served as a food hub and community gathering place, offering activities, events, festivals and children’s programs that support the businesses at the market while enhancing the community of Saratoga Springs.
From May to October, the farmers’ market is held at High Rock Park in downtown Saratoga Springs on Saturdays, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Wednesdays, from 3 to 6 p.m.
Saratoga Farmers’ Market also hosts a satellite market on Mondays from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. in Clifton Park mid-July through mid-October at the Shenendehowa Methodist church on route 146.
Outdoor markets host up to 100 vendors combined and are held rain or shine. The High Rock markets are mostly housed under three beautiful pavilions that offer protection from the sun and weather.
Marketgoers enjoy walking and biking along Saratoga’s paved Greenbelt Trail to the farmers' market, and the City Center’s parking garage offers ample parking options during the busy summer months.
The outdoor markets at High Rock Park offer an unparalleled assortment of fruits, vegetables, herbs, artisan cheese, jams, honey and maple products, artisan goods (clothing, pottery, jewelry), baked goods, meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy products (milk and yogurt), flowers, soap and body products, and a variety of ready-toeat foods. In the spring, local farms have a wide variety of starter plants for gardeners looking to plant established flowers and vegetables.
The farmers’ market moves indoors from November to April to the Wilton Mall food court. The market is open every Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. There’s nothing better than fresh local produce in the winter–here in Saratoga Springs, so that you can taste that freshness all year! The winter market is notable for its variety. You’ll find naturally grown winter veggies (including hydroponically grown salad greens and tomatoes), meat, poultry, eggs,
cheese, yogurt, milk, honey, jam, pickles, soap and body products, handmade jewelry and clothing, and more! Vendors offer ready-made foods, so you can enjoy a variety of meal options and even grab-and-go snacks while you shop!
The market continues to host a variety of programming and music during the winter months and has added vendors and festivities during the holiday season.
The Saratoga Farmers’ Market is committed to supporting local businesses, meaning all products sold at the market are produced locally within 50 miles of Saratoga Springs. When you shop at the farmers’ market, you buy unique and quality products that support local communities and the economy.
Local businesses help Saratoga Springs thrive and inspire others to develop their unique businesses. The personality and character reflected in our shopping districts are because of these small businesses. The same is true for the Saratoga Farmers’ Market.
There’s more to the Saratoga Farmers’ Market experience than grocery shopping. This lively market is also perfect for meeting friends, connecting with your community, and enjoying entertainment and family-friendly events. Something fun always happens at the market, from chef demonstrations to live music. Stop by and check it out!

Originally settled in 1771 and incorporated in 1788, it has a rich history and many strong community organizations. Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake is located in southern Saratoga County neighboring the towns of Malta, Clifton Park, Glenville, Ballston Spa and Charlton. It celebrates its farming and rural heritage by preserving open space, further developing park land and supporting local farmers’ markets, farm stands and orchard shops. Today, the approximately 12,000 residents enjoy an outstanding quality of life offered by our highly regarded school systems, Veterans Bike Path, our recreational parks, and beautiful Ballston Lake. The community spirit in this area is epitomized by the annual Burnt Hills Flag Day Parade.

Tucked in the southwest corner of Saratoga County and easily accessible from I-87 and I-90, you’ll be charmed by Charlton’s rural character, historic hamlets, and scenic landscapes. Boasting agriculture as its main industry, a drive or bike tour through Charlton’s rolling hills reveals dairy and horse farms, orchards and farm stands just around the bend. Glimpses of the past abound: in the Historical Society’s museum and one-room schoolhouse, the old general store, and lively Tavern—its former building serving as a stagecoach stop in 1787. Known for its hardy settlers and once-prolific grist mills along the Alplaus Creek, Charlton’s friendly community welcomes visitors to explore its proud heritage.

The Town of Greenfield (TOG) is located minutes north of Saratoga Springs and one of the Capital Region’s best kept secrets. With a population of 8,200 spread out over 41,000 forest and stream covered acres, residents have plenty of room to breathe. It’s a peaceful place where families hold tight to small-town pride and still live on roads named after their ancestors. Greenfield is content being the quiet neighbor with the stone wall in front and the vegetable garden out back. The TOG community proudly is “better TOGether,” with its charm and rural character.

Milton was established in 1792 and consists of 22,000 acres. It is centrally located in Saratoga County, with the Kayaderosseras Creek; a picturesque, historic, and NYS designated prime trout stream, winding its way from the Northwest to the Southeast corner, where it flows through the Village of Ballston Spa and continues to Saratoga Lake.

The charming Village of Round Lake is profoundly tied to its rich cultural past, and still boasts the “campground” feel with its small, close lots. Residences and other structures are arranged in concentric circles radiating from the Round Lake Auditorium, with narrow streets and pedestrian walkways. This creates a hub and spoke pattern – and the secret to “village life” – you know your neighbors!
Shows and events during the summer months highlighting art, crafts and antiques are regularly held on Village grounds. The Round Lake Auditorium presents a number of theater productions, historic organ concerts and musical events.
The Round Lake Library, though small, continues operation and maintains many books pertaining to Victoriana and Victorian architecture, being particularly useful to those seeking restoration information. Visit the Village website: roundlakevillage.org.

The Town of Saratoga has a rich history and a current environment that is attractive to residential, commercial, and agricultural pursuits. It is located in the eastern portion of the County bordering the Hudson River on the East, Saratoga Lake and the City of Saratoga Springs on the West. It was originally a district within Albany County and subsequently in 1791 became one of the four mother towns of Saratoga County. The first European settlers arrived in the town in 1688.

Centrally located between Saratoga Springs and Clifton Park this beautiful and historic community is known as “The Site of the Turning Point of the American Revolution.” The Battle of Freeman’s Farm and the Battle of Bemis Heights were fought here in 1777, paving the way for freedom, and setting the stage for settlement of this community along the banks of the mighty and noble, (but calm) Hudson River. Established in 1788, Stillwater, is one of oldest towns along the Champlain-Hudson corridor. Stillwater offers the “best of everything.” We are a growing community with an excellent school system, friendly neighborhoods, numerous historical sites, trails, parks and of course, Brown’s Beach!

In 1684, Colonel Peter Schuyler, Great Uncle of General Schuyler, and six partners, obtained title to the Schuyler Patent, an area of over 168,000 acres that extended roughly 6 miles each side of the Hudson River. The Battle of Saratoga, the Turning Point of the Revolutionary War, was fought on the lands presently occupied by the Village of Victory and the Village of Schuylerville. In the years following the war, flour mills, linen mills, paper mills and sawmills were constructed as well as schools, churches, and businesses.
The Saratoga Battle Monument occupies a prominent place in the northwest portion of the village.
The Victory Mill, which began operating in 1846, made 1.8 million yards of cotton cloth per year. In 1850, it employed 160 men and 209 women. Several companies owned and operated the facility over the years and unfortunately ended up closing its doors in 2000. Future development plans of the site are being developed by the village.

“I just love an Italianate!”
responded Julie Furey when asked about what attracted her to 42 Circular Street. “I love the symmetry, the height, the front doors, the staircase, the pocket doors, and, of course, the tower that gives stunning views of the entire city!” she continued.
Julie and her husband Tom chose Saratoga Springs to be their permanent residence after living in various places across the country. For Tom it was horse racing that attracted him. Raised in western Massachusetts, he grew up coming to Saratoga Race Course. For Julie, it was the architecture and history that attracted her. “The historical character of Saratoga Springs makes it so special. It sets it apart from any other,” shared Julie.
In 2011, the syndicate of which Tom was a part, Team Valor, had a Kentucky Derby winner, Animal Kingdom, who later became a Dubai World Cup and Eclipse winner. It was that same year that Tom and Julie sought a second home in Saratoga Springs. Initially they looked for a historic residence to purchase. However, after giving it more thought, they realized that they could not commit the necessary time to undertake a large project due to their work obligations in Connecticut, ultimately choosing to buy a condominium at 38 High Rock.
By 2020, Tom was fully retired as an executive of IBM and Julie was transitioning to a less active role in her interior design business, Julian’s Interiors, and they decided to move to Saratoga Springs full-time to begin in earnest to look for their forever home. They looked at several different historic residences. Yet, it was 42 Circular Street that captured Julie’s imagination.
“Tom loved the natural light in the house but we both had no idea what we were getting ourselves into,” laughed Julie.
“It needed a lot of work,” she continued. Unlike Tom, Julie was able to look past the multiple apartments that subdivided the home and see its potential to return to a single-family residence. Not to mention, it was an Italianate, her favorite style of architecture, and overlooked Congress Park.
The house is a classic example of the Italianate style, popular between 1840 and 1885. Identifying features of the style include low-pitched hipped roofs, wide overhanging eaves with decorative brackets, tall narrow windows - arched and rectangular - with elaborate window surrounds, paired wood front doors with an enframement matching those of the windows, a two-story bay window, and a tower. Before restoration

that is today 42 Circular Street was originally Lot 12 of the Kayaderosseras Patent, which included Congress Spring. In 1823, John Clarke purchased the spring and the adjoining 97 acres of land from John Livingston. Clarke had emigrated from Yorkshire, England to New York City shortly after the Revolutionary War. In 1819, he opened the first soda fountain in the city. After making improvements to Congress Spring, he began to bottle its waters and sell it throughout the United States and Europe.
Clarke drained the “dismal swamp” that surrounded the spring and landscaped the land for visitors to promenade after sampling the spring waters, today known as Congress Park. Clarke planned Circular Street along the bluff above the park, curving north to Empire and High Rock springs. He built his stately 1832 Greek Revival residence at 46 Circular Street, overlooking his park.
Clarke married Mrs. Eliza White, the widow of Charles White, a prominent attorney with whom she had four children - William B. White; John H. White; Louisa A. White Maxwell, married to Amos Maxwell, and Mary R. White Shepherd, married to Daniel Shepherd.

In 1838, John and Eliza sold vacant land to Edward Smith. Wanting to control what was developed next door to his home at 46 Circular Street, John conveyed it with a covenant limiting the use or occupancy to a private residence. Ten years later, Peter V. Wiggins, acting as the trustee for Louisa A. White Maxwell, John Clarke’s stepdaughter, acquired the property. In 1856, the vacant property was transferred to John H. White. In 1871, the property was conveyed to his sister, Mary Shepherd. She was married to Daniel Shepherd, an attorney, who passed away in 1870. The year following his death, Mary hired Alexander A. Patterson, who resided at 65 Phila Street, to build her home. The November 16, 1871, Saratogian article said it would be completed in May and “It will be finished off in the most modern style.” Upon her passing three years later, the property was conveyed to her four children – John Clarke Shepherd, Charles White Shepherd, Augustine White Shepherd, and Mary L. Shepherd. It remained in the Shepherd family until 1902.

Thatyear, Mabel A. Wesley of New York City, acquired it as her summer residence. She later married William S. Tod, a millionaire who had extensive interests in the Western and Middle Western railroads. In 1918, they sold it to Hugh Dennin, who operated the Saratoga Detective and Investigative Bureau, providing guards and watchmen for prominent summer residents. Prior to Saratoga Springs being incorporated as a city, he served as a village trustee, and later served as city marshal. Hugh passed away in 1938. According to Saratogian articles, Erva, Dennis’ wife, hosted many social events at 42 Circular Street. In 1942, Erva transferred the property to the Retreat for Ladies and Homeless Girls in Albany for $1 and moved to 74 Fifth Avenue.
That same year, Skidmore College acquired the property. Between 1942 and 1958, the Dominican Convent was listed at this address. Skidmore College briefly used it as South Hall. In 1964, it became faculty housing for Horace B. Reed Jr., an associate professor, and his wife Mary, a librarian, followed by David Kieserman, assistant professor
of Theatre, and his wife, Carole. In 1972, Verrazzano College purchased this building and others from Skidmore College. After Verrazzano declared bankruptcy, Mahmud and Fatma Okby bought the property in 1977. It was under their ownership that the house was divided into multiple apartments. It remained in the Okby family until 2020 when Julie and Tom purchased the property.
Julie planned to return the house to its original grandeur. She assembled a team that included ACW Builders, Redbud Development, SD Atelier Architecture, LLC, and others to undertake the project. “It was important to me to keep the integrity and symmetry of the house while making changes to accommodate modern living,” shared Julie. When walls were removed to restore the rooms to their original configuration and size, roof structural issues were discovered that needed to be addressed. The interior was taken down to the studs to allow for new electrical wiring, plumbing, and HVAC to be installed. It was at this time that the house was featured on the Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation’s 2022 Historic Homes Tour as the “Rehabilitation in Progress.”

Alex Wilcox of ACW Builders said, “Julie was a once in a lifetime client. She wanted to do it right, not rush. She was unwilling to sacrifice quality.” For example, rather than buy generic stock wood moldings, which would have been less expensive and faster, knives were made to match what little of the original plaster moldings survived. “Five miles of new moldings were installed,” laughed Alex. Frances Milks and his brother Merv were hired to restore the existing plaster medallions and recreate those that were missing. Tight wood grain fir was used so that it would be in keeping with original flooring. Great care was taken to replicate the herringbone pattern and borders of the floors.
Sue Davis and the team of SD Atelier Architecture, LLC designed the rear addition to allow for a modern kitchen, mudroom, and better access to the rear of the house and basement. She was also responsible for designing the carriage house style garage. At the time of purchase, the property did not have a garage because in 1977, the original carriage house, today the Beagle School, was subdivided from the property. “Julie wanted to respect the original house,” said Sue. “The garage needed to be similar to the house but different, less ornate. For example, because the house is so vertical, the garage needed to be as well, which allowed for a studio space above” she continued.

Redick , the landscape architect and owner of Redbud Development, created the landscaped outdoor spaces, shared “Julie had specific visions of what she wanted as a designer. However, she allowed project team members to express their opinions throughout the process and trusted their expertise, which ultimately led to collaboration and a great project inside and out.”
Ultimately, it took four years to complete the project that also included installing new roofs, painting the exterior, restoring the front doors and windows, and creating six ensuite bedrooms, including a primary suite on the first floor.
“It took a village – each person sharing their talents. Each talent helped to bring it back to life,” said Julie. Julie’s infectious enthusiasm, sense of humor, attention to detail, desire to respect the architecture and history of the house, and, ultimately, giving back to Saratoga Springs made it a fun, memorable experience for all those involved.
Last September, the Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation recognized 42 Circular Street with an Exterior Rehabilitation Award and New Contextual Design Award for the garage.
Again, Julie and Tom, thank you for your commitment and investment in preserving a piece of Saratoga Springs history.
