BLOTTER REPORT Between August 26 and September 1, New York State Police listed 195 incidents in their daily blotter that did not result in arrest. The most common incidents were property damage accidents. State Police identified 55 individuals involved in accidents, the average age of which was 44. They also listed the arrests of 28 individuals on 75 charges. The average age of these individuals was 34. Note: State Police did not issue a blotter report on August 28. Doctor Helen Hosmer:

He has authored articles in the New York Archives magazine and many other regional publications and has published two anthologies of his stories. He is the videographer of the Forgotten Crossroads and the One Room Schoolhouse film series for Brookside Museum. In 1934, Doctor Helen Hosmer opened a physician’s office on West Street in the Village of Galway. Originally from Billerica, Massachusetts, when Hosmer came to Galway, she was 50 years old, and though an experienced chemist and scientist, she was just beginning her career as a physician. Helen Hosmer graduated in 1906 from Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a degree in chemistry. She then worked in the General Electric Research Laboratory in Schenectady for eight years. In 1915, she relocated to Cleveland to work for one year with Dr. Crile, an expert in physiologic surgery and the founder of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Hosmer next joined the faculty of Albany Medical College, where she taught physiology for eight years and, at the same time, completed three years toward her Doctor of Medicine degree. It was during her years in Albany that she first volunteered to work at the medical clinic established by Sir Winfield Grenfell in Labrador, Canada. After one year in the north, she returned to America and, in 1931, completed
her fourth year of medical study at Tufts College, graduating with a Medical Degree. From here, Helen Hosmer spent two years as an intern at Samaritan Hospital in Troy, New York. At this time, an internship was considered the final step before a doctor opened their private practice. During this time, the intern often “took up residence” at the hospital, working long hours for low pay, often doing menial tasks and riding with ambulance crews on calls. It was during her internship at Samaritan Hospital that Helen gained experience in medical fieldwork. In late October of 1934, Dr. Davenport of Samaritan Hospital received a call from the family in Taborton, a rural community fourteen miles from Troy, that someone was seriously ill. To make matters even worse, the man was too ill to make his way to the hospital, and the cabin where he resided was a mile from the nearest road. Soon the doctor was on the way by ambulance, accompanied only by his assistant, Dr. Helen Hosmer, and their driver. It was a long walk in and likely seemed an even longer walk out, carrying their patient on the mile-long woodland path, but soon the ambulance was back on the road. In recalling the incident later, Doctor Davenport praised Hosmer as being a “great help,” and the ambulance driver for his role as a stretcher bearer. Once Doctor Hosmer had completed her internship, she took a position as College Physician to Keuka College, where she served for two years. After her time in
Keuka, she moved to West Street in Galway in Saratoga County, where she served the community as a physician from 1934 to 1937. Though why Helen Hosmer chose Galway is never revealed, she was quickly embraced by the community. As the local newspaper was a community bulletin board for both social and personal events, Dr. Hosmer’s work as a physician was occasionally noted. Some of her patients were likely related to those still in the area today; people such as William Ingersoll of Mosherville, Mrs. William Sabo of Barkersville, and young Helen Jaworsky of Galway. As part of her work in the community, Dr. Hosmer provided physical examinations at local schools and administered diphtheria vaccines in pre-school clinics. While in Galway, she had not forgotten her time in Canada, as she gave a lecture on Dr. Wilfred Grenfell’s work in Labrador at the Galway Presbyterian Church. Dr. Hosmer left Galway and returned to the Grenfell medical clinics in May of 1937, where she was given responsibility over the St. Mary’s River Hospital. During the years that she oversaw the facility, she began cultivating a garden to help provide much-needed vegetables for the patients and staff. Along with the short growing season was the abundance of blackflies and other biting insects. Those working in the gardens were forced to wear thick veils that had to be tucked deeply into their outer garments. After three years in Labrador,

she returned on furlough to the States for the winter of 1940. She took time to visit friends that she had made in Galway, such as Cecil Anibal and his wife, before returning north in the spring. During her 1941 furlough, Helen was in residence at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady. Also, during her time away from Grenfell, she gave lectures about her experiences in Labrador, including a broadcast on the Farm Forum Program on General Electric’s Schenectady radio station, WGY. After her return to Canada in early 1942, Dr. Hosmer traveled by boat and Inuit dog sled from St. Mary’s River 32 miles to the logging village of Port Hope Simpson. Later in the winter, she again headed out by dog sled, this time 95 miles to Forteau Nursing Station. As the winter had been mild up to that point, the dogs had a hard time on the thin layer of snow and slush. In telling of her time that winter, she recalled that her only consolation was that “I did not get thrown off any oftener than my driver.” In early 1943, Dr. Hosmer left Labrador and returned to Saratoga County, where she took
the position as first assistant to the physician at the Homestead Tuberculosis Sanatorium in the Town of Providence. When she first arrived, the head physician position was temporarily vacant, so for a few weeks, she stepped in to administer the sanatorium’s work until Dr. Emond Suss arrived in early February. Dr. Helen Hosmer served as a physician at the sanatorium from 1943 until 1956, when she retired for a time. She returned in 1961 to serve as the resident physician at the infirmary. During her years at the Homestead, Helen Hosmer lived in Middle Grove, where her hobby was raising Nubian Goats, her animals winning many prizes in New York and New England. Dr. Helen Hosmer passed away in 1966 at the age of 82, having lived a full life of service in both Saratoga County and the northern wilderness of Labrador, Canada. 4 Brian G. Nettleton
SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY- Brian G. Nettleton, 66, of Saratoga Springs, NY died August 30, 2026, at his home after a hard-fought battle with cancer. Born in Albany, NY on November 11, 1959, he was the youngest child of the late William J. and Rita Haeser Nettleton. He attended Vincentian Institute High School in Albany and was a 1978 graduate of Bishop Maginn High School in Albany, the first graduating class from a merger of Vincentian Institute and Cardinal McCloskey High Schools, and a 1981 graduate of Hudson Valley Community College. Brian was employed by Stantec in Albany as an Electrical Engineering Designer and shared his talents on many projects, most notably incorporating his work in many Presidential Libraries. Over the years,
his work often provided him the opportunity to travel to exciting places and meet fascinating people; his favorite was the Prague Christmas Market. Brian spent over 18 years training at U.S. Budokai Karate under the guidance of Hanshi William Reid and Hanshi Russ Jarem, attaining the rank of Senpai, third dan black belt. His years spent in the dojo brought many valuable lessons that transferred to all aspects of his life. Brian loved to spend time outdoors, and in his garage creating cutting boards as he perfected his woodworking skills. Spending time in his garage making beautiful items from wood brought a sense of calm to him as he faced the challenges his illness brought. Among the many milestones in his life, the births of his children were marked with immense joy and great pride. Being a devoted father was his greatest accomplishment and his faith, spirit and resolute love for them will forever be a testament to the life he lived. In 2013, he met the woman who would change his life for the better, and together they embarked on building a beautiful future. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Sharon McCarthy and sister-in-law, Bridget Nettleton. Brian is survived by
his loving family, fiancé, Deborah Micho, son Nicholas Nettleton, daughter and sonin-law Graceanne and Daniel Lovaglio, all of Saratoga Springs. Also survived by stepchildren Faith Smith, Billy (Anamaria) Micho and 3 grandchildren; brother Bill Nettleton, sisters Maureen (Frank) Callander, Laure (Clark) Donkin, Lisa (John Plourd) Ames, brother-in-law Tim McCarthy, 10 nieces and nephews; and his children’s mother, Patti Di Stasio. In addition, Brian is remembered by many extended family members and friends who will deeply miss him, most especially his treasured friend Larney Clark who helped care for him in his final days. The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the staff of Saratoga Community Hospice and Dr. John Pezzulo for their dedicated care. Michael Douglas Wilcox Sr. July 27, 1946 – August 31, 2026
SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY Michael Douglas Wilcox Sr. passed away on August 31, 2026, in Saratoga Springs. The day marked 58 years since the best day of his life, when he married his high school sweetheart, Donna (Cardillo) Wilcox. Michael was born on July 27, 1946, to father Clarence and mother Ollie. He graduated from Saratoga Springs High School (64) and attended Siena College (69) with the assistance of the Hawley Foundation. He married Donna in 1968, and the two honeymooned on St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands. He worked for the NY State Dept. of Civil Service as a Classification and Pay Analyst, commuting to Albany every day. Michael and Donna raised three sons together: Michael Jr., Justin, and Ryan. The family enjoyed trips to Chatham and Provincetown, where they loved scouring the beach for weird and wonderful treasures. Michael encouraged each of his sons to follow their dreams. A longtime lover of the arts (especially the orchestra and ballet at SPAC!), he pursued his dream of acting with Home Made Theater. Eventually, he served more than a decade as their Board president and appeared in over twenty productions. He was famously known as Saratoga’s own Benjamin Franklin, introducing many young Saratogians to the nation’s history! Michael had a gift for making people laugh, whether by telling a joke, playing the spoons, or hosting friends and family by the grill. He savored a good crime novel and could recite Chaucer from memory. He loved reading to his grandchildren and was himself an avid writer who vividly documented family trips and life milestones. When he wasn’t acting or reading, he was a longtime member of BPOE Lodge 161 and volunteered with several community organizations, including the Lake George Opera. Like his mother, Ollie, Michael was drawn to Florida, where his
uncle, “Alligator” Joe Campbell once ran an alligator and ostrich farm. Michael and Donna found their own place in Melbourne Beach, where he volunteered teaching young children about sea turtle conservation. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Donna; his sons Michael (Alyssa), Justin (fiancée Andrea), and Ryan (Anna); and his grandchildren, Catherine, Alasdair, and Benjamin. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Ollie, and his sister Patricia. Relatives and friends may call from 11:00am to 1:00pm on Friday, September 4, 2026 at the William J. Saratoga Remembers: Upcoming Events Marking the 25th Anniversary of 9/11

While 2026 marks the 250th anniversary of one of America’s greatest triumph’s, the July 4,1776 Declaration of Independence, it also marks the 25th anniversary of one of its darkest days: the 9/11 attacks. On Sept. 11, 2001, hijackers from the terrorist organization Al-Queda took control over four commercial aircraft over the United States and crashed three into towers one and two of the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Arlington, VA. The fourth crashed in a field in Pennsylvania after a passenger revolt. The attacks killed 2,977 people, including two from Saratoga County — Don Jerome Kauth of Saratoga Springs and Diane Parsons
of Malta. Thousands more would die from health impacts of working or living near the site of the attacks. Saratoga County will be holding several remembrances to mark this solemn day. Here is a list of where these will take place.
Saratoga Springs
Saratoga Springs will hold its annual remembrance at the 9/11 memorial in High Rock Park. The ceremony will start at 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 11. In addition to the city ceremony, the Saratoga Wilton Elks Lodge 161 will hold a public ritual at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 11.
Ballston Spa
Ballston Spa will hold its annual remembrance outside the 9/11 memorial on Front Street at 7:00 p.m. on Sept. 11.
Halfmoon
The Town of Halfmoon will
hold its annual Patriot Day ceremony at 6:00 p.m. on Sept. 11, at Abele Park.
Mechanicville
The Mechanicville-Stillwater Elks and Mechanicville Fire Department will hold a ceremony and “Ringing of the Bell” Service at Central Station on Main Street at 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 11.
Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery
The National Cemetery will toll the bell of the USS Saratoga at the time of the plane strikes on September 11 and hold two events on September 12. The first will be a cemetery clean up that will start at 10:00 a.m. with volunteers asked to meet at 9:30 a.m. Registration is required and can be done at http:// carrytheload.org. The second event will be a memorial ceremony at 11:00 a.m.
The US Route 9 Corridor Enhancement Study Committee Invites the Public to the Second Public Open House The US Route 9 Corridor Enhancement Study Committee is pleased to announce Public Open House #2 for the Town of Moreau US Route 9 Corridor Enhancement Study. The openhouse style workshop is scheduled for Wednesday, September 16, 2026, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Dango Fitzgerald’s Irish Restaurant & Sports Pub, 1393 US-9, Fort Edward, NY 12828. While the corridor is home to several successful businesses, it has faced ongoing challenges such as vacancies,
business turnover, and a lack of consistent identity. This study will evaluate the land use challenges and barriers to investment in the corridor and identify future opportunities and tools to help revitalize and enhance Route 9 to be its own destination. The goal is to shape US Route 9 into a vibrant and welcoming gateway corridor that supports both the local community and existing and future businesses. The study area spans from I-87 Exit 17 to Butler Road within the Town of Moreau. The project is being led by a Town Committee and facilitated by MJ Engineering, Architecture, Landscape
Architecture, and Land Surveying, P.C. Public engagement is a key component of the project and fundamental to its implementation and success. The objective of public engagement is to ensure that the community has the opportunity to learn about the project; to share concerns and contribute ideas; and to participate in building a consensus about the vision for the corridor, culminating in locally supported recommendations. Congratulations A former Blue Streak, Dylan F. Murphy, graduated from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy with a Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Transportation Engineering. During his time at the Academy, the 2022 graduate of Saratoga Springs High School rose to the rank of Battalion Commander, serving as third in charge of the school’s Regimental Staff. He also rowed crew and served as team captain during both his junior and senior years. Additionally, Dylan was a member of the Navy ROTC. He was commissioned on the USS Constitution and assigned the rank of Ensign. Upon completing his training, he will be assigned to Military Sealift Command. She’s had a difficult start, first being abandoned in an apartment when her owners moved away. She was then taken in by neighbors with several other pets, including dogs, kids and kittens, and did well with them—but there simply weren’t enough resources for everyone. Alana was adopted from the shelter but later returned because her family struggled with traveling. The good news? Alana actually enjoys the car and gets excited to go for a ride! She just needs some time and patience to settle into a new routine. Now Alana is hoping her third home will finally be her forever. County Eyes Kratom Ban, Last Call Time Defeated in Committee, and Appointment of a New Judge by Aidan Cahill Saratoga TODAY
While Travers may be over and the sports world shifts its eyes away from Saratoga Springs, the city itself doesn’t stop. This week’s City Council meeting saw discussion over two major updates from the county public safety committee involving kratom and last call times and the appointment of a new city judge to the bench. Here’s the bi-weekly run down of legislative happenings in Saratoga Springs and beyond. Last Call Time Change Shot Down in Committee. A proposal by Saratoga Springs Supervisor Sarah Burger to set a public hearing to change last call time county wide from 4:00 a.m. to
3:00 a.m. was defeated by the Saratoga County Board Public Safety Committee with only Saratoga Springs Supervisors Burger and Minita Sanghvi voting in favor of it. This isn’t the first time this matter has gone before the Board of Supervisors. A bill in April 2025 would have seen last call moved to 2:00 a.m. in the winter and 3:00 a.m. in the summer. That bill, however, failed when it was brought before a full vote of the Board of Supervisors. During the meeting, Burger along with Saratoga Springs Public Safety Commissioner Tim Coll and Assistant Chief Frederick Warfield pushed for the change citing public safety concerns including staffing costs, injuries due to fights, inability to properly cover other areas of the city, and officer burnout.

Warfield said that even though last call may be at 4:00 a.m., crowds are still out and about for another hour requiring police to maintain concentration in those areas — notably on the bar heavy Caroline Street. Warfield said that moving the time up would allow officers to leave the area sooner and catch DWIs in other parts of the city. “If the crowd starts reducing in size, those officers can actually leave Caroline Street and start patrolling the surrounding areas and proactively looking for DWI enforcement,” Warfield said. “Unfortunately, sometimes we have DWI incidents where we’re not aware the person was driving drunk until they crash and hit something, and then our officers go and respond to it.” Corinth Supervisor Eric Butler argued that he had a hard time passing a county law for an issue primarily centered in Saratoga Springs. Burger, however, pointed out that while there was an effort for a state law to create a carveout for Saratoga Springs to change last call time separate from the county time, that measure didn’t go anywhere and current guidance from the
state liquor authority didn’t allow for cities to supersede the county in last call time. County to Propose Banning of Kratom It wasn’t all bar talk at the Public Safety Committee meeting as the committee advanced a resolution banning the sale of kratom in Saratoga County. The bill would make selling substances containing natural kratom leaf, mitragynine, 7- hydroxymitragynine, or other naturally occurring kratom alkaloids an unclassified misdemeanor in Saratoga County. If convicted, offenders could be punished by a year in jail, a $1000 fine or both. The only exception to the bill is any substances that are FDA approval and subsequently adhere to federal and state regulations. Sometimes called “gas station heroin,” both the DEA and FDA recommend against using kratom due to a lack of research on the substance. The DEA announced in July 2026, that they intend on temporarily reclassifying kratom with a 7-hydroxymitragynine percentage above .050 as a schedule one drug — similar to drugs such as LSD and ecstasy. For Saratoga County, the
issue of Kratom is personal. In 2024, County Sewer District worker Nickolas Scribner died due to asphyxiation while taking the substance to deal with insomnia. His mother, Cari, pushed for more regulations after his death and her efforts lead the state to pass regulations on the sale of kratom statewide in December 2025. The bill banning kratom at the county level is set to be introduced at the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors meeting later this month with a public hearing to be set for some time in October. New Judge Set to Take the Bench Mayor John Safford has announced the appointment of Vincent DeLeonardis as the new Saratoga Springs City Judge, replacing Jeffrey Wait whose term ends at the end of this year. He will serve as fulltime judge from January 1, 2027- December 31, 2036. DeLeonardis is no stranger to the city. A longtime resident, he graduated from Albany Law School in 2001 and worked in both private and corporate practice as a litigator. He served as city attorney from 2014-2021. He currently serves as the chair of the City’s Charter Review Commission.

Two Tornadoes Rip Through Wilton by Aidan Cahill Saratoga TODAY
Wilton is still recovering after two tornados ripped through the town on August 27. The first, called the Wilton Tornado by the National Weather Service (NWS) was an EF-1 tornado that started near Greylock and Glenburnie drives before crossing Interstate 87. The second, dubbed the Ruggles Road Tornado, was an EF-0 that occurred in the vicinity of Ruggles Road and Preserve Way. The two tornadoes happened almost simultaneously with the Wilton Tornado starting at 6:05 p.m. and lasting until 6:10 and the Ruggles Road Tornado touching down at 6:10 and lasting until 6:11. The Wilton Tornado traveled for 1.75 miles and had a maximum width of 250 yards. It saw winds hit 110 miles per hour. The Ruggles Road
Tornado, meanwhile, traveled .19 miles with peak wind speed of 85 miles per hour and a max width of 50 yards. No injuries or deaths were reported in either tornado. The next day, residents and local contractors came out to assess the damage and start repairs on homes and properties impacted by the Wilton Tornado. Residents described the tornado to Saratoga TODAY. They reported hearing debris hitting their homes, followed by everything going dark and a loud freight train like noise as the tornado rolled through. Tornados are a rare sight in Saratoga County. Since 1950, there have only been 15 recorded tornadoes, the strongest of which was an EF-3 tornado which struck Mechanicville in March 1998 and cut all the way to Vermont, injuring 68 and causing $71 million in damage. The only other reported tornado that
caused injuries was a 2020 EF-1 tornado in Stillwater which injured one person. The last time two tornadoes hit on the same day in Saratoga County was on July 5, 1992, when two EF-0 tornadoes hit opposite sides of the county within 30 minutes of each other — the first hit Charlton while the second hit Stillwater. Residents said they received ample warnings of the danger and were able to seek shelter well in advance of the tornado’s arrival. In response to the tornadoes, the Town of Wilton has declared a state of emergency until Sept. 5. Residents can leave leaves, branches and other natural debris on the side of the road for town crews to pick up with information on pick up of other debris to be determined by Sept. 4. In addition, the town is waiving permit fees to repair damage caused by the tornadoes.

Workforce Housing Proposed in Ballston Spa, Residents Have Reservations by Aidan Clark Saratoga TODAY
On Wednesday, Aug 26, residents of the Village of Ballston Spa voiced concerns about a proposed 168-unit residential complex in the Village’s central business district. The developers are seeking a special permit from the zoning board to move forward with construction at 125 Bath Street. The location is currently considered a brownfield site and will require developers to work with the New York State Department of Environment Conservation to decontaminate the site before construction. Attorney John Cromie, whose office sits across the street from the proposed development site, submitted his grievances to the Zoning Board. “Citing 168 units does not tell the full story. A better metric is the number of bedrooms. 255 to be exact. It is very possible 450 to 500 people will be present at any one time – 10% of our village’s population,” Cromie said in a written statement. He continues, “It is estimated the two peak hours will produce 151 trips. There are about 16 hours during which most people are active. It is not unreasonable to estimate upwards of 600 more cars will pass by neighboring homes each day.” An independent engineering
consultant conducted a traffic analysis and concluded “traffic generated by the proposed Tannery Commons development can be accommodated by the existing roadway network with minimal impacts to traffic operations.” Ballston Spa Zoning Member, Kamran Parwana, noted the data used in the analysis was collected on December 3, 2024, a Tuesday which had snowfall. “I find the traffic study to be optimistic,” Parwana told the representatives of Blue Ridge Cascade and the NPR group. This sentiment garnered a prolonged applause from the 70+ residents in attendance. “To rely on those numbers from almost two years ago and the growth coefficient is 25% annual growth. If we look at the number of large developments that have been in the process of being built that use Milton Ave and Ballston Ave as major thoroughfares, I’m really concerned that growth rate does not reflect what’s really here,” Parwana said. Some community members were in favor of increased housing in close vicinity of Front Street. “Potential residents of this community would be the ones who would be using that business district. I think it would be a real enhancement for the
village to have people living close to [the central business district] that could use say, the Iron Roost for breakfast,” Kathlyn Rooney reasoned. The project will be workforce housing, targeting librarians, restaurant workers, and police officers as potential residents. To be awarded the special permit, the project must pass three tests outlined in zoning code 205-72. First, the development shall be in harmony with the surrounding district Second, the traffic to and from the housing complex will not be hazardous or inconvenient to the surrounding neighborhood. Third, the location, height and landscaping of the buildings shall not hinder the development or impair the value of adjacent buildings. The plans include three buildings: a four-story building along Gordon Creek, a threestory building along Bath Street, and a four-story building on the back of the property. Also in the blueprints is a pocket park on Bath Street with a trail along Gordon Creek which could connect to the Jim Tedisco Trail behind the property. The developers also stated they would reconstruct the sidewalk along Bath Street and implement extensive landscaping,

leaving adequate greenspace. Public comments on the proposal are due to the Zoning Board by September 16 at pbzbcomments@ballstonspa.gov.
The next Zoning Board meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 30 at the Ballston Spa Elk’s Lodge at 10 Hamilton Street.

$400,000 in Funding Available to Help Close the Digital Divide Community organizations across the Greater Capital Region have an opportunity to receive funding to help more residents access the technology, skills and support they need to fully participate in today’s increasingly digital world. The Digital Equity Coalition of the Capital Region (DECCR), in partnership with United Way of the Greater Capital Region, is accepting applications for a new grant opportunity that will distribute $400,000 to community organizations working to bridge the digital divide. Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations and government entities, such as libraries and senior centers. The initiative aims to help Capital Region residents overcome barriers to reliable internet, technology, digital literacy, and essential online services. Applications are open now and will be accepted through September 18, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. Addressing a Growing Need Across the Capital Region. President and CEO of
United Way of the Greater Capital Region Peter Gannon says, “access to devices and reliable internet connectivity is critical in today’s digital first world.” “For families already struggling with rising costs, affordable access to technology can help close the affordability gap by connecting them to critical services, employment opportunities, and resources that support financial stability and their wellbeing. This grant opportunity will help bridge the digital divide by connecting people with the resources, technology, and support they need to navigate an increasingly digital world,” Peter Gannon concluded. Reliable internet access and digital skills have become essential to everyday life. Applying for a job, accessing healthcare, completing schoolwork, finding housing, managing finances and connecting with government services increasingly require people to be able to navigate the digital world. Yet not every Capital Region resident has equal access to the necessary devices, connectivity,
skills or technical support. The new funding opportunity is designed to strengthen organizations already serving capital region residents and help expand their capacity to address those barriers. Eligible projects may include efforts that: • Provide internetenabled devices such as laptops, computers and tablets • Deliver digital literacy and technology training • Offer technical support and device assistance • Improve the accessibility of digital content and online services • Help residents access employment, education, healthcare and government resources online Priority will be given to projects that expand access to internet-enabled devices, strengthen digital literacy and skills, provide technical support, and make digital content and online services more accessible throughout New York’s Capital Region. This includes Albany, Columbia, Greene, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Warren, and Washington Counties. Any organization is welcome to apply, but priority will be given to organizations working in the capital region.

Brendon Russell has been appointed as Assistant Principal at Maple Avenue Middle School. Mr. Russell began his new role on August 28. Mr. Russell brings extensive experience supporting students and families at Maple Avenue. Most recently, he served as a Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA) as the Elementary CSE Chairperson. Prior to that, he served as a Social Worker at Maple Avenue beginning in 2017. He has also provided professional development on trauma-informed practices, behavioral interventions, and crisis responses. “Brendon has built strong relationships with students,
families, and staff throughout his years at Maple Avenue,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Michael Patton. “His compassion, collaborative approach, and commitment to supporting students make him an excellent fit for this leadership role. We are excited to see him take on this new opportunity and continue to make a positive impact at Maple Avenue.” Mr. Russell earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from MCLA and his Master of Social Work from SUNY Albany. He is currently completing his Advanced Certification in District and School Building Leadership from Russell Sage College.

September Preschool Nature Time at Wilton Wildlife George Foster Peabody, with Glenn Underwood
Saratoga County History Center at Brookside Museum will host a presentation focusing on the life of American banker and philanthropist George Foster Peabody, presented by author and artist Glenn Underwood. During this program, taking place on September 9 at 7 PM, Underwood will discuss his recent biography of Peabody, and explore his connections to Saratoga and Saratoga County. Glenn Underwood is an artist, author, and historian from Upstate New York whose family operates Twin Birches Cottages in Lake George, a property that stands on the former grounds of Abenia, the summer estate of banker and philanthropist George Foster Peabody. In 2017, Underwood began a research journey at the New York Public Library’s Brooke Russell Astor Reading Room for Rare Books and Manuscripts, where he examined the Yaddo Records and George Foster Peabody files. What began as an effort to find photographs or documents connecting Peabody to the land now home to Twin Birches soon evolved into a much larger discovery. Through Peabody’s letters and correspondence with family, friends, governors, presidents, and leading cultural figures of his era, Underwood

Over the past eight years, Underwood has meticulously researched and documented Peabody’s friendships with Edward Morse Shepard, Spencer and Katrina Trask, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Adolph Ochs, and John Howard Melish, among others. His work also explores Peabody’s role in regional projects such as Prospect Mountain, Shepard Park, Diamond Island, the Wiawaka Center for Women, the Lake George Association, the Caldwell-Lake George Library, the Saratoga Reservation Commission, Saratoga Spa State Park, the New York State Forest Tree Nursery, and Yaddo. The culmination of this research is Underwood’s new book, Discovering George Foster Peabody, a comprehensive work that brings together archival research, correspondence, and rare photographs to reintroduce one of New York’s most quietly influential figures to modern readers. Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park is inviting its youngest adventurers to celebrate Monarch Butterflies during September’s Preschool Nature Time, held on Friday, September 11, at 10:00 a.m. This month’s theme, “Amazing Monarchs,” will teach children about the amazing monarch butterfly, its life cycle, and the incredible journey they take! Led by a Wilton Wildlife environmental educator, preschoolers will embark on a brief stroll through Camp Saratoga. After the walk, children and their caregivers will gather for a cozy lineup of monarch stories, hands-on activities, singa-longs, and a creative craft designed especially for ages 3-6. This program is primarily held outdoors to celebrate the season, though activities will be moved indoors if the weather calls for it. An adult must accompany each child. trip to the farmers’ market can fill your shopping bag, but it can also leave you knowing something you didn’t know before. This September, the Saratoga Farmers’ Market is offering four hands-on Wednesday workshops where participants will learn a new skill, meet local experts, and take some of that knowledge home. Education and community have always been an important part of the Saratoga Farmers’ Market Association’s mission. Beyond providing a marketplace for local farmers and producers, the market aims to be a place where people gather, learn, and connect. The series begins September 9 with Pickling 3 Ways, led by Alyssa Hayes, Nutrition Educator with Warren County Cornell Cooperative Extension. Participants will learn refrigerator pickling using beets, green beans, and cucumbers. It’s a simple way to preserve peak-season vegetables, and participants can pick up fresh produce at the market and put their new skills to work at home. On September 16, Jai Stockin, owner of 9 Pine Designs, will lead Introduction to Plant-Based Dyes. Participants will learn how vegetables and plants, including some found at the farmers’ market, can be transformed into natural dyes. Each person will experiment with the process and naturally dye a reusable cotton bag to take home. On September 23, mushroom expert Jake Howard and owner of The Mushroom Shop will teach participants how to grow shiitake mushrooms

outdoors on logs. After learning about the growing process, participants will get hands-on, inoculating their own shiitake log to take home and care for. The series finishes September 30 with Fall Candle Making, led by Amy Hartman, owner of Bella Blends. Participants will select a fall-inspired essential oil blend and hand-pour a candle using a coconut and beeswax blend. While the candles set, there will be plenty of time to shop the market before returning to pick up the finished candle.

All workshops begin at 4 PM under the High Rock Park pavilions and will be held rain or shine. Space is limited, and registration is required. The summer went by so quickly. September is a beautiful month. Not only does it mark cooler days and evenings, it is also a harvest month. Seeing the ripening apples on the trees reminds me that it’s Back-to-School time. Who doesn’t like a crisp sweet apple in the Fall? So many delicious apples are grown in this region. Many of you may already know this, but the apple is New York’s state fruit. Another fun fact is; New York is the second-largest apple producing state in the United States, averaging 25 million bushels of production annually with varieties that include; McIntosh, Empire, Red Delicious, Cortland, Golden Delicious, Rome, Crispin, Gala, Fuji, and many others. Did you recently go apple picking and now don’t know what to do with all those apples? Sure, it is great to eat an apple as a snack on its own (or maybe dunked in salted caramel sauce), but you are probably in need of some apple recipes so they do not go to waste. I swear, apples sometimes multiply in the bags after picking them…that, or I just don’t realize how many apples I’ll truly end up with when I pick a bushel. Making desserts and dishes with apples is endless. There are so many ways to prepare apples like; Apple sauce, apple butter, apple pie, poached apples, caramel apples, apple cake, apple muffins, apple cider donuts (yum), apple chutney, or even apples in a Sangria. When we get our bushel of apples home; well, first we eat some of them raw – delicious! Then we get creative and make lots of tasty creations with our apple picks. And of course, we
• 2 1/2 cup all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
cored and cut into 1-inch chunks or thinly sliced
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
• 1 stick plus 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, cubed, plus 6 tablespoons softened unsalted butter
• 1 cup sugar
• 1/4 cup ice water
• 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
• 6 large apples—peeled,
• 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
• 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon • 1/2 cup light brown sugar
INSTRUCTIONS 1. In a food processor or mixer pulse/mix 1 1/4 cups of the flour and 1/4 teaspoon of the salt. Add 1 stick of the butter and mix until it is the size of peas. Drizzle on the ice water and pulse until evenly moistened crumbs form; turn out onto a surface and form into a ball. Flatten into a disk, wrap in plastic and refrigerate until firm. 2. Preheat the oven to 375°. Set a baking sheet on the bottom rack. In a bowl, toss the apples, lemon juice, sugar, 1/4 cup of the flour and the cinnamon. use the best tools. There are cool culinary tools available to help you with your apple creations, At Compliments to the Chef, your Neighborhood Kitchen and Cutlery store, we have apple peeling machines, apple slicers, mandoline slicers, and even cookie cutters. Cookie cutters are a fun way to get fun way to dress up a dessert, or get kids involved and eating new foods. Cutting apples into stars, hearts, or even letters is tedious but a fun surprise to include their school lunch for special occasions. A mandoline slicer lets you cut apples into different widths or with crimped edges. It’s great for making the base of an apple sandwich and can also dress up any snack plate. If you want to secure the apple, but get rid of the core, use an apple corer. This distinctive tool easily removes the core and makes disposal quick and effortless. The unique leveler splits in half for easy release after you twist or push the corer through the apple. Of course, who can resist a
homemade apple pie? We carry beautiful pie plates and tools you need to assist with your delicious apple treats. So, how do you like them apples? 3. On a floured surface, roll a disk of the dough to a 13-inch round; fit it into a deep 10-inch glass pie plate and brush the overhang with water. Crimp the overhang. Spoon in the apples. 4. In a bowl, whisk the remaining 1 cup of flour, the light brown sugar, the baking soda and the remaining 1/4 teaspoon of salt. Add the 6 tablespoons of softened butter and rub the mixture until sandy. Add the walnuts. Press the mixture into clumps and sprinkle over the pie. 5. Bake the pie in the center of the oven for 1 hour and 10 minutes, until the crust is golden. Marianne Tynan
SARATOGA SPRINGS Marianne Tynan passed away peacefully on August 12, 2026, after a lifetime of service to her family, friends and community. She was known as a great friend, speaking from the heart, and always being excited to try new things. She was the real deal. Marianne was born in Worcester, MA on December 5, 1941 to Marietta (Hurley) and Vincent Tynan. She studied at Emmanuel College and spent many years teaching from South Boston to Mexico where she mentored countless young people. Later in life, she served as a hospice Chaplain in Saratoga Springs, NY. She was an avid reader and loved sports, especially the Olympics and enjoyed hearing about the athletic activities of her great nieces and nephew. There would often be a baseball game on the television at home with a detailed summary of the game to follow. Marianne also loved the animals she adopted over the years. She would gravitate to the cat no one else would take and provide loving attention and companionship. She picked up camping while in her 70’s and she enjoyed being in the outdoors. If she couldn’t travel to camp, she would set up on her “slabio” behind her house. Marianne had so many wonderful and supportive friends, including Bill W, many of whom
would drive her to appointments, care for her home or just sit and talk. She valued her friends and their friendship so much. Marianne was predeceased by her brother, Vincent J Tynan, and nephew Michael Tynan. She leaves three great nieces - Marietta, Isabella and Alice, two great nephews – Benjamin and Connor, one niece – Kaitlyn and one nephew – Patrick. Saratoga Giant Pumpkinfest Dolly Parton’s Returns for 11th Year
The Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce will present the 2026 Saratoga Giant Pumpkinfest on Saturday, Sept. 26 in downtown Saratoga Springs. This free and fun-for-all-ages event will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Saratoga Springs City Center parking garage. The passing of Dolly Parton has seen a national outpouring of sorrow and gratitude. This was evident in that the New York State Department of Transportation displayed lyrics from her 1973 single, Jolene, on Interstate 87. President Trump even ordered all flags on government buildings to be flown at half-staff in honor of Dolly Parton, an honor rarely given to private citizens. Parton epitomized the rags to riches American dream. She was born in a one-room cabin in Locust Ridge, Tennessee, the fourth of twelve children born to Robert and Avie Partons. Dolly’s parents filled their home with traditional mountain-folk music which formed the foundation for Dolly’s eventual stardom. Parton was said to have written her first song at six years of age and performed on local television by age 10. She released her first album, “Hello, I’m Dolly” at 21. The country star performed at Saratoga Performing Arts Center in 1979 and 1983. But possibly her most lasting legacy will be founding the Imagination Library, a children’s literacy program. As of 2023, the Imagination Library mails books to one in seven children under the age of five years
old in the United States monthly. “Before he passed away, my Daddy told me the Imagination Library was probably the most important thing I had ever done. I can’t tell you how much that meant to me because I created the Imagination Library as a tribute to my Daddy,” Parton wrote on the Imagination Library website. “He was the smartest man I have ever known but I know in my heart his inability to read probably kept him from fulfilling all of his dreams.” In 2024, United Way of the Greater Capital Region partnered with the Imagination Library and has distributed over 275,000 books to over 15,000 children in the Capital Region. “Dolly was a larger-than-life American icon whose impact will live on in every book placed in the hands of a child through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. We are incredibly honored to partner with her organization. We will always admire Dolly for her passion and dedication to making this world a better place. May her family be comforted with the knowledge of the number of lives she has improved,” said CEO of United Way of the Greater Capital Region, Peter Gannon. Golf Icon, Dottie Pepper, Brings Contemporary Christian Music to her Hometown by Aidan Clark Saratoga TODAY
Golf fans may remember Dottie Pepper’s dominant outing at the 1999 Nabisco Dinah Shore tournament where she shot a record 19-under par to win her second major title. Followers of the sport may recognize Pepper from her extensive commentating career on the Golf Channel and CBS. Some may not know that the Saratoga native was the first ever walking reporter allowed at the Masters in 2020. Now Pepper says she has received a tap on the shoulder. Through a culmination of efforts, Pepper, along with Peggy McQuade has organized two unique contemporary Christian concerts in her hometown of Saratoga. This calling, Pepper said, she really started listening to during the
pandemic. “I would not have considered myself much of an active Christian until probably more toward a decade ago. But this whole Christian music thing for me kind of blew up [my faith],” Pepper reflected. During “the Covid Summer we were the first major sport to go back on television. I essentially drove across the county, and I was by myself and this music kept me rooted and positive.” Two years ago, Pepper hosted a concert in her backyard featuring Josh Baldwin, a Christian singer-songwriter. Since that informal gig, Pepper, Baldwin, and David Leonard, an artist in the same genre as Baldwin, have been trying to coordinate schedules to bring their music to the Spa City. This year those efforts come to fruition; on September 19 Baldwin and David Leonard are coming to
the Universal Preservation Hall for “Voices to God.” Additionally, on September 11, the inaugural “Worship in the Pines” is coming to Saratoga Performing Arts Center. This all-day festival of contemporary Christian artists is one Pepper hopes becomes an annual event like Jazz or Outlaw Fest. “I think there’s an element that music becomes a more powerful messenger than the spoken word,” Pepper said. “It’s more about getting the music and the message out of a particular building and out among the masses. Spa Catholic’s Great Pumpkin Challenge Ladies Soccer: Supporting Saratoga Bridges
Saratoga Bridges’ 26th Annual Great Pumpkin Challenge 5K, 10K, and Kids Fun Run will return on Saturday, September 26th at 9:30 a.m. at the Columbia Pavillion in Saratoga Spa State Park. This family and wheeled-friendly event is for all ghosts and ghouls who want to run, walk, or roll their way to victory. The 5K and 10K races will start promptly at 9:30 a.m., but runners can arrive earlier to check their bags and pick up their race packet if they are unable to the Friday before. While waiting for the race to begin, runners can also vote in the pumpkin decorating contest, each pumpkin having been decorated by people in Saratoga Bridges’ Day Programs. Following the race, participants can relax in the pavilion and enjoy delicious baked goods and fresh fruits, donated by local businesses and made by people in Saratoga Bridges’ residential program. The Kids Fun Run will take place after the 5K and 10K, which has children complete a short run that ends at the finish line. Once the results are finalized, there will be a quick awards ceremony for the overall winners and top male and female runners in each age group. There will also be a costume contest, so runners are encouraged to dress in their best Halloween costumes for a chance to win. The first 1,200 registrants will receive a moisture-wicking long sleeve t-shirt with the race logo.

Three years ago, the Saratoga Central Catholic Ladies Soccer team was at risk of dissolving due to lack of coaching. Fortunately, Brian Venn, whose daughter plays for the team, volunteered to step into the head coach roll. When Venn along with volunteer assistant coach Tony Nucrea took over in 2024, the team won eight games and were knocked out in the quarterfinals of sectionals. That was an improvement on the 1-15 record the team had the year before. Last year the team won nine games and made it to the quarterfinals of sectionals, a qualifying improvement. “When we set out to do this three years ago, we thought to ourselves, first we have to build stability in the program. We have to get the younger athletes,” Nucera said.
“So, we have that stability now. We started with 11 or 12 and now we have 11 underclassmen, which is almost equal to what we had when we first started.” This year, Coach Venn has challenged the team to play 20 games. “If we play 20 games, that means we are in the state tournament and we won a sectional title,” Venn said. Talking to the players who have played on the team for the past three years, it’s easy to see how the program has grown to have lofty ambitions. “Being open and welcoming to everyone and treating them like how I was first brought onto the team. Being new, it was scary at first, so just being there for them and say, ‘if you ever need anything even outside of soccer in general, you’re going through something, I’m always there,’” said senior captain Addison Quail, who is one of the team’s only full-time soccer athletes. At a school with an average class size of 29, most of the athletes play other sports and were recruited by their friends. That was the case for senior goalie Grace Schaefer, who brought her softball bag to last week’s soccer practice. “Because I’m a catcher in softball, I’m constantly catching things, so I might as well try goalie and see how that goes. I was good at kicking the ball, I was good at blocking it and then it just stuck,” Schaefer reflected on her three years on the team. Continues on Next Page

Basketball is senior midfielder, Sophia Ryan’s primary sport, who led the team to Spa Catholic’s first ever Section 2 basketball title last winter. “A couple of my friends were playing [soccer], and I had played when I was younger, so I was like I’ll try it out,” Ryan said. “I started playing softball too just to help the team out because they needed players.” Since the team has seen a revitalization from fresh coaching and enthusiasm from players, the parents have reciprocated. Every year, Cooperstown Distillery hosts a parents-only fundraising event in support of the team. This allowed the team to purchase new jerseys in ‘24 and afford an independent schedule. This year, Skidmore College has invited the team to play three Friday night games under the lights, highlighting how far the program has come. Over the summer the team has been practicing two times per day in preparation for the season, and because they want to spend all the time they can with their friends. The ladies kick off their season Labor Day weekend at a Bolton Landing tournament. League games begin September 8 against Hadley Luzere, hopefully picking up their first of 20 wins this season!

Malta 5K Returns, Proceeds Benefit Local Non-Profits

The 17th annual Malta 5k will be held on Saturday, September 12, at TEC-SMART at 345 Hermes Road, beginning promptly at 8:30 a.m. Pre-registration for the 5K road race is $35, and $40 on the day of the event. For Malta 5k registration, ages 12 and under and those 70+ can register for $20. The first 750 signed up will receive a free Malta5k race cap. Runners can pick up their race packet or register for the race in person on Friday, September 11th, from 2 to 6 p.m. at Fleet Feet in Malta. Awards will be given out at 9:30 a.m. for the top three male and
female overall runners as well as the top three in each five-year age group. In addition, a cash prize of the top participation over 75 gets $750, over 50 gets $500, and over 25 gets $250. All proceeds go directly to local not for profits around the anniversary of 9/11, especially to those that serve and protect us daily and have served, including the Veterans & Community Housing Coalition (VCHC), Malta Ridge Fire Department, Round Lake Fire Department, and Malta- Stillwater EMS.
