Maria Chindamo Harrison

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NYMaria Chindamo Harrison, 96, passed away on Monday, May 25, 2026, at Saratoga Hospital.

Maria was born in Loja, Ecuador, on June 8, 1929. She grew up with her mother, Balbina Suarez, her sister Philomena, and her brothers Juan and Pablo. In 1952, she moved to Virginia to attend Averett College. After completing her studies, she relocated to Manhattan, New York, where she worked at Fiduciary Trust and New York Hospital. Maria would often visit her friend Haiti in Queens NY. It was through Haiti that she met Joseph Chindamo, who would become her husband. After two years of courtship, they married in 1958. Maria embraced her new family and its traditions, including learning to cook Italian dishes with the help of her mother-in-law and sister-in-law. She and Joseph welcomed their first son, Frankie, in 1959; their second son, Stephen, in 1963; and their youngest,

Robert, in 1964.

In 1960, Maria and Joseph purchased their first home in Howard Beach, Queens, where she lived until 2009. During the 1960s, she worked as a Doctor’s Receptionist before transitioning to education. In 1972, she became a Resource Center Coordinator at Beach Channel High School in Rockaway, New York, a position she held until her retirement in 1992. The family’s life in Howard Beach was marked by stability and community until Joseph’s death from cancer in 1981. In 1984, while still teaching at Beach Channel, Maria met Bill Harrison, who would become her second husband. Maria and Bill moved to Saratoga Springs in 2009 and remained together until Bill’s passing in 2014.

Maria and Bill traveled the world on the People2People student ambassadorship program, introducing hundreds of young people to cultures around the globe. She was also the editor of the newsletter for the United Nations Women’s Guild, where she met with diplomats, ambassadors, and first ladies. Maria later served as Director of Protocol for the AirlineAmbassadors.com, where she would want charitable donations to be sent. She was featured prominently in the book, Wings of Love, by Nancy Rivard, president of the Airline Ambassadors.

In Saratoga Springs, Maria quickly became an active and recognizable presence. She served on the board of the Saratoga Performing Arts Center and helped organize numerous charitable

events. As a member of the local garden club, she contributed to beautification efforts throughout the city. She was also a devoted parishioner at St. Clement’s Church, faithfully attending the Sunday 4 p.m. Mass. Known for her elegance and sociability, Maria enjoyed attending galas, brunches, and the Saratoga Race Track with her close friends, who were affectionately known around town as the “Glam Squad.”

Maria is survived by her sons Stephen and Frankie, and by her grandchildren, Sara and Robert. She endured the loss of her youngest son, Robert, in 2000, a grief she carried with quiet strength. Throughout her long life, Maria was defined by her generosity, her resilience, and her ability to form lasting connections. Her presence will be deeply missed by her family and by the many people whose lives she touched.

A viewing was held on Thursday, May 28 at the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes, 628 North Broadway, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866 (518-584-5373). A funeral Mass will take place Friday, May 29, at 10 a.m. at St. Clement’s Church. Maria’s ashes will be interred with those of her beloved son Robert at Mount Saint Mary Cemetery in Flushing, New York.

Maureen T. Drennen

GANSEVOORT - Maureen T. Drennen (Myers), age 64, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, May 22, 2026, surrounded by the love of her devoted family. She was the beloved wife and best friend of Jack H. Drennen, with whom she shared 45 wonderful years of marriage filled with love, laughter, and unwavering devotion.

Born on August 26, 1961, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Maureen was the cherished daughter of the late Joseph C. Myers III and Dolores K. Myers. She was a woman whose warmth, kindness, and caring spirit touched the lives of everyone who knew her.

Maureen dedicated many years of her professional life working in Information Technology for both Saratoga Hospital and Albany Medical Center. She was admired not only for her dedication, but also for the genuine compassion and friendship she extended to her coworkers, many of whom became like family to her over the years. Her caring heart and infectious sense of humor brightened every

room she entered.

Above all else, Maureen’s greatest joy in life was her family. She was a loving wife, a devoted mother, and the absolute best “MomMom” to her grandchildren, who were the center of her world. She treasured every moment spent with them and created countless memories filled with love, laughter, and comfort. Her family was her greatest accomplishment, and the love she poured into them will remain a guiding light for years to come. To those who knew and loved her, Maureen was truly the heart of the family, and her absence leaves an immeasurable void.

In addition to her parents, Maureen was predeceased by her sister, Elaine Myers, and her brother, Stephen Myers.

Left to cherish her memory are her loving husband, Jack H. Drennen; her children, Michelle Hastings and her fiancé Kevin, Adam Drennen, David Drennen and his fiancée Lorissa, and her daughter and best friend, Sharon McDonald; her son-in-law, Larry Hastings; and her adored grandchildren, Shawn, Jasmine, Lucas, Jensen, Aurora, Laurynn, Jack, and Madalynn, all of whom brought endless joy to her life.

She is also survived by her siblings, Maryann Audet and her husband Jean, Christopher Myers and his wife Kathy, and Joseph C. Myers IV and his wife Carolyn; along with several beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will forever remember her loving spirit and generous heart.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Monday, June 1, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Compassionate Funeral Care, 402 Maple Ave., Saratoga Springs, NY 12866. A funeral service celebrating Maureen’s life will begin at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Milton Marine Inducted into NYS Senate Hall of Fame

Senator Jim Tedisco (R,C-Ballston Lake) recently inducted retired U.S. Marine Corps Col. Christopher J. Douglas of Milton into the New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame. Col. Douglas served our state and nation in numerous combat tours in Iraq as well as serving in Afghanistan, Somalia and Haiti.

“Col. Douglas is a great patriot who led Marines in five combat tours to protect our nation and way of life, and he continues to serve our country in civilian life with the U.S. Department of War. I’m proud to recognize Col. Douglas’s service by inducting him into the New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame,” said Senator Jim Tedisco.

Douglas currently serves Deputy to the Commanding General and Highly Qualified Expert to the Office of the U.S. Secretary of War.

Col. Douglas received a Bachelor of Arts in Communication from Marist College in 1990, where he played Division III football.

From March 1985 to June 1991,

he served in the U.S. Army Reserve as a combat engineer with Company C, 854th Engineer Battalion.

In 1991, Col. Douglas completed the Marine Corps Officer Candidate School, The Basic School, and the Infantry Officer Course in Quantico, Virginia. He was then assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines, where he commanded three platoons, was an executive officer, and was the 3/6 battalion adjutant. During this tour, he participated in Operation Battle Griffin in Norway. He served as part of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit in Operations Continue Hope in Somalia, Provide Promise and Deny Flight in the Adriatic Sea, and Support Democracy in Haiti.

In 1995, Douglas transitioned from active military service to the United States Marine Corps Reserve to pursue a career in Law Enforcement.

He entered the New York State Police in January 1996 and served as a Trooper, Investigator, and Narcotics Investigator.

Following the attack on

America on September 11, 2001, Douglas would return to active duty to lead Marines on five combat tours in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF), Enduring Freedom (OEF), Inherent Resolve (OIR), and Freedom’s Sentinel.

He retired as a Narcotics Investigator from the New York State Police in March 2020 to return to active service.

During the withdrawal from Afghanistan, he served as the assistant chief of staff G-5 at U.S. Marine Corps Forces Central Command, forward-deployed to Qatar to assist with processing evacuees from Afghanistan. He was also the senior Marine in the Pentagon’s investigation into the August 2021 bombing outside the Kabul airport, that killed 13 U.S. service members and about 170 Afghans. He subsequently retired from the Marine Corps in October 2022.

His personal awards include

two Legion of Merits, one with a Combat Distinguishing Device, Two Bronze Star Medals, the Purple Heart, Three Combat Action Ribbons, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, two Meritorious Service Medals, the Navy Commendation Medal

with Combat “V,” a Navy, Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and the Humanitarian Service Medal. Douglas and his wife Susan live in Milton, NY. Their son,1LT John B. Douglas IV now serves as an infantry officer in the U.S. Army.

“Saratoga: Town & Country” Opens at Eden Compton Gallery

Eden Compton Gallery is announced the opening of Saratoga: Town & Country, a regional juried exhibition featuring artists within a 100 mile radius of Saratoga Springs including the greater Capital Region and central Adirondacks.

The exhibition opens with a public reception and awards presentation on June 6th, 4-7 p.m., and will showcase a diverse collection of paintings, drawings,

mixed media, and fine art inspired by the unique character of Saratoga Springs and its surrounding areas.

The exhibition was juried by Ann Larsen, a nationally recognized painter and Master Artist with the American Impressionist Society. She is also previous President of American Women Artists.

Known for her luminous landscapes and expressive use

of color, Larsen brought a discerning eye to the selection process, choosing works that demonstrate technical excellence, originality, and a strong sense of place.

Located in the heart of Saratoga Springs’ arts district, Eden Compton Gallery is known for exhibiting the contemporary and representational fine art of both local and nationally recognized artists.

The gallery continues to expand its role as a cultural destination for both residents and visitors with a variety of events, special exhibits and group shows. Awards for the exhibition are

generously supported by local sponsors including Discover Saratoga, Soave Faire, and Source Tek (national supplier of fine art panels), whose contributions help recognize artistic excellence while strengthening the connection between the arts and local business community.

The opening reception on June 6 will provide an opportunity for the public to meet participating artists, view the award-winning works, and celebrate the creative vitality of the Saratoga region.

Meet Velo!!

What can we say about Velo. To say he is a bigger cat is an understatement since he is a whopping 27 pounds. He is a very sweet boy who was surrendered with his housemate, Ripley, when his owner fell on hard times. He is so sweet and loves attention and to be talked to. Velo will need someone who can monitor his food intake and spend time playing with him so that he will lose weight. Although Velo lived with Ripley, they seem to do better as solo cats and will be adopted separately. Velo is 5 years old, updated on vaccines and tested negative for FIV and FeLV. If you need a workout partner, he is the one for you!

Hopkins Sentenced to 32 Years to Life for Abuse of a Child

A Saratoga County man has been sentenced to 32 years to life in prison for sexual abuse of a child.

Brian Hopkins received the maximum sentence in after being convicted in February of predatory sexual assault of a child and 2nd degree course of sexual conduct against a child.

The maximum sentence for the first charge is 25 years to life in prison while the max sentence for the second charge is seven years in prison followed by up to 15 years supervised release.

Hopkins received an enhanced sentence due to a 2000 conviction for physically assaulting a one-year-old child.

“At its simplest, this case is about a man who sexually abused a young boy from the age of six through 13 in Saratoga County,” prosecutors said during the sentencing hearing.

In his sentencing, Judge James Davis followed the recommendation of the prosecutor to have the sentences run consecutively. In addition, orders of protection were issued preventing contact between Hopkins and protected individuals in the case.

“It’s unconscionable, and

that’s why I sentenced you to the maximum penalty available under the law,” Davis

During the sentencing hearing, the victim gave a statement advocating for the maximum sentence so that Hopkins would be prevented from abusing anyone else. Hopkins did not speak at the sentencing hearing.

The earliest Hopkins can be released is 2058, when he will be around 77 years old.

After the hearing, Saratoga County District Attorney Brett Eby praised the decision.

“This defendant is a pedophile who deserves to spend the rest of his life in prison for the horrific abuse he inflicted on a child,” said District Attorney Eby. “Today’s sentence sends

a clear message that Saratoga County will relentlessly pursue justice for child victims and hold predators fully accountable.”

As for the victim, Eby praised his courage in coming forward.

“The victim just showed a remarkable strength in not only protecting this community, but protected children from this pedophile,” Eby said.

Two Injured and One Dead in Plane and Car Crashes at the Saratoga County Airport

Two people were injured and one person is dead after a plane crash and car accident at the Saratoga County Airport.

The plane crash occurred on May 26, 2026 at 1:47 p.m. on the runway of Saratoga County Airport while the car accident occurred at 1:55 p.m. at the entrance to the airport at the intersection of Geyser and Greenfield Roads.

According to a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) preliminary incident notice, the plane crash occurred during takeoff when a towed glider pitched up causing the towing aircraft to “nose over” and strike the runway. The crash caused both the aircraft and grass near the accident to catch fire.

The aircraft was identified by both the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and FAA as a single engine, single seat Piper PA-25 registered to a local glider club. According to registration information, the aircraft was first manufactured in 1969 and was most recently certified in 2012.

While New York State Police initially reported one individual, the aircraft’s pilot, had been seriously injured in the crash, the FAA notice listed a single fatality in the accident. As of time of publication, State Police have not released an update on the incident, nor has the individual’s name been released.

The NTSB is currently investigating the incident and will release a preliminary report within the next 30 days.

According to NTSB data, this model of aircraft has been

involved in 116 accidents since 1962. Of these, 30 resulted in fatal injuries, 10 resulted in serious injuries, 21 resulted in minor injuries and 53 resulted in no injuries. The remaining two incidents had incomplete data. The most recent incident listed by NTSB involving the model occurred in February in 2025 in Honduras.

The plane crash led to a car accident directly outside the airport. According to the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office, a Saratoga County Office of Emergency Services Ford 150 pickup truck responding to the plane crash struck a white Jeep Grand Cherokee, causing the Jeep to roll over.

At the time of the crash, the Jeep was traveling eastbound on Geyser Road while the truck was traveling northbound on Greenfield Avenue.

The driver of the truck was transported to Albany Medical Center while the driver of the Jeep was transported to Saratoga Hospital. Both drivers were transported by Malta-Stillwater EMS with non-life-threatening injuries. The accident is being investigated by the Sheriff’s Collision Reconstruction Unit.

This is the second fatal plane crash near in Saratoga County in less than a year. In October 2025 a Mooney M20E crashed just after takeoff after suffering an engine failure, to pick up a towable banner, according to the NTSB. The last non-fatal accident occurred in 2023 when a student and instructor were forced to make an emergency landing in a field after running out of fuel.

Boho Chic Boutique Closed

Saturday May 23— After eight years in the community, Boho Chic Boutique is forced to close their doors. The building it operates under, which has been for sale for nine months, sold to new ownership earlier this month. The new owners had no intention of renewing Boho Chic’s lease and gave owner Carrie VanDerhoof a fifteen-day eviction notice on Saturday, May 16. “Of course we are disappointed, we have been here for eight years, and no one communicated with us” said VanDerhoof.

Located on Front Street in Ballston Spa, Boho Chic gave local artists a platform to share their art with the community. The boutique gave residents and visitors a chance to support small artists while purchasing sustainable, locally made art instead of mass-produced products.

It was a celebration of the local community Boho Chic had garnered over their eight years of business on Saturday. VanDerhoof wrote on Facebook, “There are not enough words to summarize my feelings, my gratitude, my sadness, my joy, my love for this beautiful family we have cultivated.”

The short notice barely gave VanDerhoof time to process that her time at the Ballston Spa storefront has come to an end. Left with plenty of inventory on the final day of operation, be on the lookout for pop-up shops around the Ballston Spa community.

When asked about what’s next for Boho Chic Boutique, VanDerhoof is not going to rush into a new brick-and-mortar storefront. “I need to walk into the space and feel right, Boho Chic is an expression of art, and the space needs to represent that.” Be sure to follow Boho Chic Boutique on Facebook for future developments.

The Saratoga Springs Police Department, in preparation for next week’s Belmont on Broadway concert, has issued parking restrictions and road closures for Wednesday, June 3. Broadway from Vandam St to Lake Ave, Walton St from Woodlawn Ave to Broadway, and Ellsworth Jones from Broadway to Maple Ave will be closed from 5 a.m. until June 4 at 2 a.m. The arterial will be reduced to one lane at 4 a.m. until the end of event. Broadway from Washington St. to Lake Ave, Lake Ave from Broadway to Maple Ave, Church St. from Broadway to Woodlawn Ave, Division St. from Connolly Way to Broadway, Caroline St. and Phila St. from Broadway to Putnam will be closed from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Saratoga Hospital Volunteer Guild Awards Scholarship to Five Area Students

Saratoga Hospital Volunteer Guild has awarded college scholarships of $2,000 each to five Saratoga County high school seniors who plan to pursue careers in healthcare.

The recipients were selected for sharing the Guild’s dedication to education and community involvement.

Three of the students have volunteered at Saratoga Hospital.

Scholarship recipients are:

• Sydney Balzer, a senior at Saratoga Springs High School planning to major in PreMedicine at the University of Tennessee. When Sydney began volunteering at Saratoga Hospital in her junior year, she realized that her true purpose was to help people. She also serves as an intern at Saratoga

Dermatology.

• Arissa Gillani, a Saratoga Springs High School student, is planning to major in Biology/Pre-Med at Adelphi University. She has volunteered in hospice care at Glens Falls Hospital and homes for the elderly, connecting with patients who remind her that compassion is an essential skill and medicine is an act of humanity.

• Arden Talmage, a student at Schuylerville High School, plans to major in Psychology at SUNY Geneseo. Her community experiences include sorting donations at The Way, working as a camp counselor at Double H Ranch, and running the children’s theater program at the Schuylerville Public Library.

• Daniel Weed is a senior at Ballston Spa High School and will be attending Desales University and majoring in Physician Assistant Studies. His first-hand experience includes volunteering in the Emergency Department at Saratoga Hospital, as well as seasonal cleanups at St. Mary’s Church, distributing food at the Northeast Regional Foodbank, and being a recycling handler at the Schuylerville American Legion.

• Margaret Zito, another Ballston Spa senior, plans to major in Biology at SUNY Geneseo. Margaret volunteered in the SSOAR Program at Saratoga Hospital, a student summer volunteer program at Saratoga Hospital, and solidified the fact that she wanted to dedicate her future to helping patients and working with others in the medical field.

Since 1990, Saratoga Hospital Volunteer Guild has awarded yearly scholarships to

help support the next generation of healthcare providers. The 2026 scholarships were announced last week at the Guild’s annual Scholarship and Recognition Dinner, which honors both the recipients and Guild volunteers. Each year Guild members donate thousands of hours in service to the hospital and the community. The Guild also has provided millions of dollars to support Saratoga Hospital facilities, technology and program

10 Saratoga County students have been awarded $500 from the Adirondack Area School Boards Association as part of their community service award.

The 10 students were nominated by their home districts for the award to the organization. The award recognizes students who demonstrate “exceptional commitment to community service and making a positive impact both in and out of school.”

In total, 32 students received the award from the organization.

Schuylerville High School senior, Timothy Cox, earned two of the highest honors awarded at the 2026 New York FFA Convention: being named the New York State winner in Employment Skills and elected the 2026-27 New York FFA State Vice President. Cox will represent New York at the National FFA Convention and serve more than 16,000 FFA members statewide during the coming year, traveling throughout New York to represent the New York FFA Association at conferences, conventions, leadership events, chapter visits, and agricultural industry functions. In his role, he will help lead workshops, advocate for agricultural education, inspire FFA members, and work alongside fellow state officers to support the future of FFA in New York.

Through his own breeding and sales enterprise, Barraclough has gained handson experience in horse management and business operations while working toward his goal of one day owning and managing the farm himself.

o Emily works for Jaymes McAssey Racing Stable in Saratoga Springs, a Standardbred harness racing operation that trains and cares for client-owned racehorses. The stable manages 25–30 horses each season, and Emily helps maintain the horses’ health, conditioning, and performance while also assisting with travel and competition logistics throughout the Northeast.

How the Saratoga Farmers’ Market Helps Neighbors in Need

In these challenging times, many of our friends and neighbors in Saratoga County aren’t able to put enough food on their tables. About 12% of the population (24,000 residents), including 15% of children, experiences food insecurity. The Saratoga Farmers’ Market is proud to participate in federal, state, and local programs that help feed our community.

The Farmer’s Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) is a federal initiative that helps Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) recipients and low-income seniors access local, fresh vegetables, fruit, and culinary herbs.

Participants receive five $5 coupons, redeemable from June to November at the market. Many of our vendors accept FMNP coupons, namely Owl Wood Farm, Scotch Ridge Berry and Tree Farm, Leaning Birch Farm, Kokinda Farm, Saratoga Apple, Burger’s Market Garden, Shushan Valley Hydro Farm/Underwood’s Greenhouses, Gifford Farms, Grazin’ Acres, Jacob’s Farm, and Promised Land Garden Farm. There are also two vendors at the Saturday market accepting eWIC cards: Leaning Birch Farm and Grazin’ Acres. FMNP coupons are available at the Saratoga County WIC and Office of the Aging.

Customers enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) can use their benefits by exchanging their EBT

funds for farmers’ market EBT coins at the market information booth. EBT coins never expire and may be used to purchase fresh fruit and vegetables, bread and baked goods, meat, fish, and poultry, dairy products, honey and maple products, and value-added foods like soup mixes, sauces, and jams and jellies. Herb plants and plants that produce food may also be purchased with EBT coins.

There is a valuable bonus to using SNAP benefits at the market: for every $2 in EBT coins exchanged, customers will receive a $2 FreshConnect coupon to spend on SNAP-eligible foods at the market. Additionally, FreshConnect coupons are available to veterans, service members, and their families. They can receive up to $50 in $2 vouchers by contacting the Saratoga County Veterans Service Agency. SNAP/ EBT & FreshConnect are accepted by vendors selling EBT-allowable foods on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays.

There is another excellent

resource at the market on Saturdays: Comfort Food Community (CFC), a local nonprofit addressing food insecurity in our region. CFC organizes several food voucher programs sponsored by local health care institutions and Medicaid. These vouchers are part of CFC’s Produce Prescription program, which helps individuals with chronic health conditions and lower incomes access nutritious local foods. The Saratoga Farmers’ Market is open on Wednesdays from 3:00 - 6:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. at High Rock Park in downtown Saratoga. INGREDIENTS:

*Ingredients currently available at the farmers’ market

• 1 lb of ground beef*

• 1 tablespoon canola oil

• 2-3 tablespoons taco seasoning*

• 3-4 scallions*, chopped

• 1 bunch cilantro*, chopped

• 1 avocado, chopped

• 1 lime, quartered

• 4-5 radishes*, thinly sliced

• 1-2 cups chopped lettuce*

• 1 cup cheddar*, grated

• ½ cup sour cream, optional

• Salsa* and hot sauce*, to taste

• Corn or flour tortillas, soft or hard

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. In a skillet over medium heat, heat oil. Add beef and cook until browned. Add seasoning and ¼ cup of water and stir until incorporated.

2. While the beef is cooking, chop the vegetables, grate cheese and plate on a large platter.

3. Wrap soft tortillas in foil and warm in 325F oven for 10-15 minutes or warm hard taco shells on a cookie sheet for 3-7 minutes. 4. Fill tacos with beef and toppings and enjoy!

I can recall the emotions of pride watching each of my children get their diploma from high school and college. For a parent, there are so many mixed emotions. During graduation day from high school, I knew my children would be fine – they would be great. Their high school graduation was just the beginning of some amazing times to come. For me, it was the start of a very different time in my life. As you watch your child cross the stage, you can feel your heart expand and surge. That moment was precious and overwhelming at the same time. During their college graduations, I cheered them and supported them as they navigated living away from home. They are out there living their own lives, and as a parent you can only sit back, hope and wish them the best. These feelings occur at all levels of watching individuals enter into new stages of their lives. That’s the thing about graduations, they

INGREDIENTS

• 1 package (18 ounces) Hawaiian sweet rolls

• 12 slices cheddar cheese

• 1-1/2 pounds lean ground beef (90% lean)

• 1/2 cup chopped onion

• 1 can (15-1/2 ounces) sloppy joe sauce or tomato sauce

• 1 tablespoon packed brown sugar

• 1 tablespoon soy sauce

• 3/4 teaspoon pepper

• GLAZE:

• 1/4 cup butter, melted

INSTRUCTIONS

• 1 tablespoon packed brown sugar

• 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard

• 1 teaspoon soy sauce

• 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

• 1 teaspoon sesame seeds

• 1 teaspoon black sesame seeds

• 1 teaspoon dried minced onion

• Dill pickle slices, optional

1. Preheat oven to 350°. Without separating rolls, cut rolls in half horizontally; arrange bottom halves in a greased 13x9-in. baking pan. Top with half the cheese slices.

2. In a large skillet, cook beef and onion over medium heat until beef is no longer pink and onion is tender, 6-8 minutes, crumbling beef; drain. Stir in sloppy joe/tomato sauce, brown sugar, soy sauce and pepper. Cook and stir until combined, 1-2 minutes. Spoon beef mixture evenly over rolls; top with the remaining cheese. Replace top halves of rolls.

3. For the glaze, stir together butter, brown sugar, mustard, soy sauce and garlic powder. Brush over rolls; sprinkle with sesame seeds and minced onion. Bake, uncovered, for 15-20 minutes or until tops are golden and the cheese is melted. If desired, top with pickle slices. Recipe

of strategy and patience, he not only excelled in the game himself but found great joy in sharing his knowledge with others. He especially loved teaching children the game of chess at Dorothy Nolan School, where he encouraged young minds to think critically, patiently, and confidently. His accomplishments in the chess world were remarkable. In 2018, he earned the distinguished title of Arena FIDE Master, a recognition of his skill and dedication to the game he loved so deeply. Even in his final days, Raymond continued to compete and thrive, most recently earning first place in an online worldwide 10/0 rapid tournament on May 9th with a perfect 5-0-0 record.

Beyond his accomplishments in chess, Raymond devoted much of his life to helping others find hope and healing. A man of great compassion and understanding, he became a selfless volunteer and dedicated advocate in Alcoholics Anonymous, faithfully serving in the AA men’s correctional program at Saratoga County Jail and at the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Station for many years. Raymond’s own journey of recovery was one he carried with humility and gratitude, proudly celebrating more than 15 years of sobriety. His testimony, encouragement, and unwavering support became a guiding light for many individuals striving to rebuild their lives.

Raymond also had a lifelong love for thoroughbred horse racing. He was fascinated not only by the races themselves, but by the rich bloodlines, history, and traditions of the sport. He could often be found studying breeders, trainers, jockeys,

Launch “Grand, Gilded and Glorious: A Saratoga Stroll” for Summer 2026

The Saratoga Springs History Museum, in collaboration with the Saratoga Springs Heritage Area Visitor Center, is pleased to announce the return of “Grand, Gilded and Glorious: A Saratoga Stroll,” a guided walking tour celebrating the rich history, glamour, and legendary stories of Saratoga Springs’ Gilded Age.

Beginning June 5 and running through October 17, 2026, the 90-minute walking tour invites visitors and residents alike to experience the fascinating world that transformed Saratoga Springs into one of America’s most celebrated resort destinations during the 19th century.

Guests will journey through historic Congress Park and downtown Saratoga Springs while hearing stories of millionaires, mineral springs, luxury hotels, socialites, scandals, and

the colorful figures who shaped the Spa City’s golden era. The tour concludes with a guided exploration of the historic Canfield Casino, now home to the Saratoga Springs History Museum, with museum admission included in the ticket price.

“We’re excited to once again partner with the Saratoga Springs Heritage Area Visitor Center to offer this engaging experience for both visitors and locals,” said James Parillo, Museum Director of the Saratoga Springs History Museum. “The tour is a fun and accessible way to discover the people, places, and stories that made Saratoga Springs famous around the world.”

Tours will operate on Fridays and Saturdays throughout June, excluding June 19.

Belmont on Broadway: Everything You Need to Know About Saratoga’s Free Downtown Concert

In an effort to showcase its vibrant downtown scene, Saratoga Springs has been hosting free concerts to kick off the Belmont Stakes Racing Festival. Dubbed Belmont on Broadway, the events have been featured on Netflix’s “Race for the Crown” and have included headliners such as Blues Traveler and Gin Blossoms.

For the third and final year that the Belmont Stakes will be run at the Saratoga Race Course, the Spa City has aimed to put on a grand finale that includes two notable music acts and one of the most famous stand-up comedians on the planet.

Belmont on Broadway 2026 will take place on Wednesday, June 3. Saratoga’s thoroughfare will close at 5 a.m., creating a block party-like atmosphere where revelers can stroll (and/ or dance) in the streets.

The festivities will begin this year with something new: a ticketed VIP experience at Universal Preservation Hall, located just steps away from Broadway on Washington Street. Beginning at 2 p.m., VIP-ers can strut their stuff on a green carpet (to match Belmont’s distinct color), get their photo taken, receive a keepsake lanyard and commemorative poster, watch the day’s races on TVs inside, and then get seated for comedian Chelsea Handler’s stand-up show at 4 p.m.

Handler has been a big name in the comedy world for decades, hosting her own latenight talk show on E! from 2007 to 2014 before hosting a Netflix show from 2016 to 2017. In addition to touring across the globe, she’s also written six books that have hit #1 on The New York Times bestseller list.

Once Handler wraps up her set, VIP-ers can saunter over to Broadway, where they’ll have access to a special tent in Ellsworth Jones Plaza near the main stage. VIP-ers can also

access a private indoor hospitality lounge on the second floor of the Saratoga Springs City Center.

7 p.m. is when the free fun begins. Vertical Horizon, an altrock band that scored a massive hit in 1999 with “Everything You Want,” will first take the stage. The band has released seven albums, including Everything You Want, which sold more than two million copies. The title track hit the #1 spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 and Adult Top 40 charts and went on to become the mostplayed single of 2000.

Next up will be the headliner: Fitz and the Tantrums. They’re an indie pop group best known for their hit singles “HandClap” (if you’ve ever attended a baseball game, you’ve probably heard this song), “Out of My League” (which has more than one billion plays on Spotify), and “The Walker.” Their latest release, 2025’s “Man on the Moon,” has been described as the group’s most daring album yet.

The concert will finish around 10 p.m.

“I Wouldn’t be Alive if I Didn’t Advocate for Myself”

Erin Mark— A Ballston Lake resident born with cystic fibrosis, a rare, life-limiting genetic disease. Doctors said she would not live past 18 years old. When she was five years old, she overheard her father speaking with a friend about her diagnosis. Even at five years old she understood the ramifications of the disease and promised herself to “cram as much joy in life as possible.”

According to the Mayo Clinic, cystic fibrosis affects the cells that make mucus, sweat, and digestive juices. These fluids are usually thin and slippery to protect the body’s internal tubes and ducts and make them smooth pathways. But in people with cystic fibrosis, a changed gene causes the secretions to become sticky and thick. The secretions plug up pathways, especially in the lungs and pancreas. Cystic fibrosis gets worse

over time and needs daily care.

Throughout her life she was constantly on antibiotics; she eventually built up an immunity to oral antibiotics and needed IV antibiotics administered in a hospital.

In 2017, when Mark was 33, she was entering into the late stage of the disease; her lungs were failing. In a doctor’s visit to talk about her options going forward, Mark was completely dismissed. Her doctor told her, “You should feel lucky for all the extra years you had.”

Mark left the doctor’s office feeling completely helpless and broke down in her car. But in that moment, she knew she had an obligation to herself. “I thought about that five-year-old girl, giving up wasn’t an option.”

She quickly looked for a second opinion and contacted all the cystic fibrosis doctors in her insurance network. She connected with Dr. Patrica Walker, a specialist in cystic fibrosis working at Mount Siani in New York City. Mark had

a completely different experience with Dr. Walker. She recalls Dr. Walker telling her, “I can’t promise anything, but we’ll try everything we can, and I will never give up on you.” Mark said, “To hear her say I wouldn’t give up on you was a moment of relief.”

During this time in her life Mark was giving keynote talks about how to live a life without regrets. How growing up with a disease doctors said would eventually kill her gave her a unique perspective on life. She says, “I learned how to live because I learned how to die.”

Mark recalls during this time in her life being in the hospital weighing 79 lbs., not knowing if she would wake up to see tomorrow. She turned to set an alarm so she could wake up to eat before her next IV. She noticed that you could change the alarm name to wake up to and wrote “you woke up today.” A powerful reminder that tomorrow is not promised,

you get another chance at life if you wake up.

However, because she sought out a second opinion, she was able to hold on until 2019 when a breakthrough drug, Trikafta, was approved by the FDA. The drug saved Mark’s life by changing how the gene works in her body. All of a sudden, she had a new prognosis and a newfound outlook on life. Instead of being grateful for all the extra years she already had,

she awarded herself a new chapter in her life because she advocated for herself.

Mark now travels across the country, sharing her story at keynote talks about the importance of advocating for yourself. “I wouldn’t be alive if I didn’t advocate for myself” she told Saratoga TODAY. Free Wildlife Festival at Wilton Wildlife

On Sunday, May 31, from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM, The Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park will host its annual Wildlife Festival at the Historic Camp Saratoga on Scout Road in Wilton. This free event will feature information on Karner blue butterflies, live animals, music, nature crafts, pond exploration, food, and lots of handson fun for all ages.

This event is timed so that participants can enjoy the beauty of the first brood of the Karner blue butterflies and the blooming of the wild blue lupine. Activities will take place throughout Camp Saratoga to encourage people to explore the wonderful trail system and celebrate National Trails Day.

Besides seeing the endangered Karner blue butterflies, participants will be able to meet other live animals. Native raptors will be presented by Trish Marki of Silent Wings, sponsored by Ballston Spa National Bank, an observational beehive presented by the Southern Adirondack Beekeepers Association, Seeing-eye Dogs from the Guiding Eyes for the Blind Adirondack Puppy Raising Region, adoptable rabbits from Hop on Home, and so much more.

Out in the meadow, there will be a Karner blue butterfly

information table to help visitors learn about the Saratoga Sand Plains Habitat Restoration area. Educators from Wilton Wildlife will share information about the efforts of New York State DEC and The Nature Conservancy to improve habitat for endangered species.

Beginning at 11:00 AM, there will be numerous nature activities taking place in locations around Camp Saratoga. From butterfly crafts to watercolor, fish printing, and pond exploration, there is something for everyone. During the festival, fire tower volunteers will be staffing the Donald A. Collins Memorial Fire Observer’s Cabin along with the Historic Cornell Hill Fire Tower for visitors to get a unique view.

Live music will be presented by Café Lena’s School of Music, Rolling Pebbles, and Jazz Modes in the pavilion located at Camp Saratoga South.

Food will be available for purchase at a volunteer-run barbecue, along with baked goods donated by Wilton Wildlife volunteers. Sip Happens will be selling Karner blue butterfly-themed sodas, teas, and lemonades.

Wilton Wildlife will be sharing information about

the Larry Gordon Outdoor Education Center that they are working on for Camp Saratoga in partnership with the Town of Wilton. Maps, festival flyers, upcoming program flyers, and the first annual Wilton Wildlife Trail Challenge prizes will be available at the Information Table located on the porch of the Welcome Cabin in Parking Lot #1. Participants will also be able to pick up an activity passport at the Information Table and get it stamped as they go around the festival to win prizes and get fun giveaways!

The Wildlife Festival will take place rain or shine, with many of the activities moving under the cover of Camp Saratoga’s many pavilions, the dining hall, and the Welcome Cabin in case of rainy weather. They encourage people to carpool, bike, blade, or walk since parking, while free, is limited.

The Saratoga Wilton Soccer Club’s Boys Under 19 team will play NY Hota Bavarian Soccer Club’s Boys Under 19 team on Saturday, May 30th. Saratoga County Chamber Golf Tournament

The Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce is hosting their annual Golf Tournament on June 17th,

at Brookhaven Gold Course.

The tournament will cost golfers $150 for a 9-hole, half day of golf.

Registration will begin at 9AM, giving players time to check in, warm up, and connect before the action begins with breakfast sandwiches and coffee. A 10 a.m. shotgun will send teams out across the course for a morning of golf, camaraderie, and friendly competition.

Inaugural iRun Saratoga Half Marathon Set for Sunday, September 20th

The inaugural iRun Half Marathon in downtown Saratoga Springs will occur on Sunday, September 20th at 8:00AM. The race will begin in Congress Park and finish in High Rock Park, navigating the Saratoga Greenbelt system, Spa State Park, and Saratoga Springs’ iconic landmarks and neighborhoods.

“We wanted to create a new half marathon in Saratoga

Springs that showcases the very best of the running routes that locals like myself enjoy everyday,” said founder Jamie Mastroianni. “From horse racing heritage to the Congress Park Carousel to SPAC and the beautiful Spa State Park, the scenery is the star of this half marathon course.”

Druthers will host an after party directly following the race at their Broadway location in

The Firecracker 4 Road Race on July 4th Celebrates its 20th Anniversary

The Firecracker 4 Race will celebrate its 20th anniversary at this year’s event. Proceeds from the Firecracker 4 benefit trail development, recreation programs, and other healthy lifestyle programs.

To help prepare adult and teen runners for the race, a twice-weekly training program in Saratoga Springs begins on June 11. Runs through local neighborhoods will be held on Thursdays at 6:00 p.m. Outdoor track workouts at Saratoga Springs High School will be held on Saturdays at 9:00 a.m. The program will offer a combination of speed work, hill training, and course previews.

On race day, preceding the Firecracker 4 race, the Sparkler Run for young children begins at 8:15 a.m. on Maple Avenue behind the Saratoga Springs City Center. This short 0.2-mile race is held on the final segment of the main race, so kids experience the fun of crossing the real finish line. Parents or older

siblings are welcome to accompany their young runners

The Firecracker 4 fourmile race starts at 9 a.m. on Broadway in front of the City Center, proceeds through the downtown shopping district, and then winds through the streets of Saratoga’s East Side neighborhood, where numerous bands will play on street corners and residents cheer and set up garden-hose misting stations to benefit the runners.

Participants finish this Independence Day race under a giant American flag hoisted by the Saratoga Springs and

Ballston Spa Fire Departments. Continuing for 2026 is a Team Village in the Ellsworth Jones lot behind the City Center where teams may set up canopies prior to the race where their athletes may gather.

Registration is open at firecracker4.com for both the Firecracker 4 ($43.33, including the processing fee) and the Sparkler Run ($6.30, inclusive of fee). Packet pick-up will be July 2 (Fleet Feet in Albany, 12:00 to 6:00 p.m.); July 3 (Fleet Feet in Malta, 12:00 to 6:00 p.m.); and at the Saratoga Springs City Center on July 4 beginning at 7 a.m.

Clifton Park Advises Residents Not to Feed Canadian Geese

While some people may find Canadian geese adorable, that is no reason to feed them, at least according to the Town of Clifton Park.

The bulletin was issued May 27, advising residents not to feed the water fowl, properly dispose of food, and educate others on why feeding is harmful.

“Please Do Not Feed Canada Geese,” the advisory read. “Feeding wildlife may seem harmless, but it creates serious problems.”

The advisory listed several issues that feeding the birds can cause such as harm to the bird’s diet, water pollution from bird

droppings, damaged lawns and aggressive behavior, disruption of normal behavior and increased road hazards.

The Canada goose is a common bird in North America, with their habitat stretching from the arctic to northern Mexico, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

While the birds have historically been migratory, most of the geese in New York are residents, spending most of their lives in one location, according to the New York Department of Environmental Conservation. The birds mate for life and can

live for over 20 years. In New York the resident geese population is around 200,000 with the population growing in winter as their winged brethren from northern Canada migrate south to the comparatively moderate climate.

The birds are known for being aggressively territorial and attacking humans and others who come too close to their nest. This has led them to be dubbed online as “cobra chickens”.

The birds are also known for disrupting air travel. According to the FAA bird strike database, there have been 495 bird strikes involving geese

since 1990 when bird strikes started to be recorded. The most famous of these incidents occurred on Jan. 15, 2009 when
