Saratoga Jewish Community Arts Announces Panel Discussion of the film ‘The Windermere Children’

Saratoga Jewish Community Arts, with a generous grant from the Jewish Federation of Northeastern New York and the sponsorship of Temple Sinai of Saratoga Springs, presents a panel discussion of the PBS drama, The Windermere Children. The program is scheduled for Tuesday, March 24 at 7 pm on Zoom.

screenwriter Simon Block was to strike a balance between history and drama, to accurately represent on screen the children’s collective and the individual experiences. In the camps, they had learned how to survive, but those behaviors didn’t translate well into a civil society where rules existed. The children had to learn a whole new way of life.

that can lead to productive and even eminent lives.

In a reunion in Prague a few years ago, hundreds came, generations of children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren of the original survivors.

Saratoga County Department of Public Works (DPW) and CHA Consulting, Inc. (CHA), in cooperation with the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT), will hold a Public Hearing on Monday, March 16, 2026, at 6PM at the Saratoga County Fire Training Center, 6010 County Farm Rd, Ballston Spa, NY 12020.

The purpose of this meeting is to provide information about the NYS Route 50 (Doubleday Avenue) at Northline Road (County Route 45) Intersection Improvement Project in the Town of Milton.

Individuals in attendance will be given the opportunity to provide oral and/or written comments about the project. Representatives of

CHA will be available to discuss the project one-on-one. Additionally, details will be provided to show proposed highway right-of-way modifications involving property acquisitions, per the Eminent Domain Procedure Law.

The goals of this project are to enhance traffic flow, improve the safety of the intersection, and to upgrade pedestrian and bicycle facilities. Construction is scheduled for completion in 2027. This project is 80% federal and 20% county funded.

Members of the public who are unable to attend the meeting may submit comments no later than March 30, 2026, to Eric Williams, P.E., Senior Project Manager, CHA Consulting, Inc., 3 Winners Circle, Suite 100, Albany, NY 12205.

Several books and films have chronicled the 10,000 children rescued out of Europe during World War II on what became known as Kindertransport, the trains that carried the children to safety in Great Britain.

Lesser known is the smaller, post-war British mission to rescue Jewish orphans who survived the concentration camps and give them a chance to reclaim their lives.

This is the saga told in the drama, The Windermere Children. Located in the Lake District of England, Windermere hosted the refugee children for four months in 1945. They received physical care, emotional support and education from sports coaches, social workers, rabbis and others working together to deal with the children’s traumatized psyches.

The challenge for

Windermere was an extraordinary place, though. During the day, the children could run free, join countless activities, and be unafraid. But nights were different. Many succumbed to horrible nightmares that persisted in some cases throughout their lives.

A number of the survivors whose stories are portrayed appear at the end of the film. They are now the aged orphans who ultimately settled in England, Israel and the U.S. They display the remarkable human capacity for resilience

“What is message we take from this story?” asks Phyllis Wang, Coordinator of SJCA. “How about the message of welcoming refugees? How about empathy, compassion and understanding? This is in stark contrast to what is happening in this country and all over the world today, where immigrants are greeted with negativity, fear, self-importance, and religious and racial bias. Why is it so hard to accept that so many immigrants have given so much back to the country that took them in?”

Assemblywoman Walsh Calls for Energy Affordability and Grid Stability at Capitol Press Conference

Assemblywoman Mary Beth Walsh (R,C–Ballston) stood alongside fellow lawmakers from the Senate and Assembly Minorities at the state Capitol today to address the growing energy affordability crisis affecting families and businesses across New York caused by the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA).

Representing Saratoga, Schenectady and Fulton counties, Walsh said residents throughout the Capital Region are feeling the strain of rapidly rising electricity and heating costs.

“Families in my district are seeing dramatic increases in their monthly utility bills, and they deserve answers,” Walsh said. “When residential electricity prices have risen 47.1% since 2019 and we continue to hear warnings about grid reliability, it’s clear we must reassess our current path.”

Walsh also pointed to a recent internal memo from the New York State Energy Research and Development

Authority (NYSERDA) outlining potential cost increases associated with the state’s climate mandates. According to the memo, compliance with the CLCPA could significantly raise fuel costs in the coming years, including projected increases of more than $2.23 per gallon for gasoline, $2.41 per gallon for diesel, and $16.96 per MMBtu for natural gas by 2031.

At the same time, The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) has raised concerns about grid reliability in the near future, underscoring the need for a balanced and responsible energy strategy.

At the press conference, Walsh joined her colleagues in outlining proposals aimed at providing immediate financial relief while strengthening the long-term reliability of New York’s energy system. These proposals include:

• Income-based rebate checks of up to $400 for utility ratepayers

• Returning surplus clean energy funds from

NYSERDA’s Climate Investment Account directly to ratepayers as utility bill credits

• Halting the natural gas ban and zero-emission school bus mandate

• Reinvestment in natural gas plants that were forced into retirement under current policies.

• Expansion of the POWER UP grant program to incentivize the quick build-out of reliable energy

“I speak with members from across the state who are reporting the same thing: energy costs are unsustainable for working families, seniors on fixed incomes and small businesses,” Walsh said. “We can pursue

environmental progress, but it must be done responsibly and transparently, with affordability and reliability at the forefront.”

Walsh emphasized that New York must adopt a practical, allof-the-above approach that protects ratepayers, strengthens grid capacity and ensures stability for communities statewide instead of passing crazy mandates such as the gas stove ban and repealing the 100-foot rule.

“Our goal should be clear,” Walsh concluded. “Reliable power, reasonable costs and policies grounded in reality, not mandates that outpace our infrastructure or our families’ ability to pay.”

Kim to Takeover as Interim Leader of Saratoga Springs Democrats

The Saratoga Springs Democratic Committee has announced that former mayor Ron Kim will take over as interim chairman of the committee.

Kim was elected to the interim position following the resignation of chairman Ottis Maxwell during the Feb 21 meeting, according to a press release issued by the Saratoga Springs Democratic Committee.

Kim previously served as Mayor from 2022- 2023 before being defeated by current Mayor John Safford in 2023. Prior to that, he served as Commissioner of Public Safety from 2005-2009.

“Our local Democrats have spoken, and we need to prove that we hear them,” Kim said in the release. “A local committee’s role has always been about building power and resources to help our candidates succeed, and moving forward, the SSDC is doubling down on this critical mission. While I may be a familiar face around city politics, I’m doggedly committed to recruiting and empowering new voices with the energy and expertise that can lead our candidates to victory, while keeping voters engaged and informed.”

In the release, the

Committee also announced that former Commissioner of Finance and current County Supervisor Minita Sanghvi and Former Accounts Commissioner Dillon Moran had both resigned their positions on the executive committee — among other resignations. The resignations come after the committee suffered major setbacks in the 2025 elections.

While Democrats defeated Republicans Chuck Marshall for control of the Department of Public Works and George Ehinger for supervisor, they

by the Sheriff’s Office found that Looman was about 1,000 yards offshore when he crashed. While the crash wasn’t witnessed, another rider who had been riding behind him discovered the crash.

Looman was transported to Albany Medical Center in serious condition with life-threatening injuries. The crash is still under investigation.

lost control of the Finance and Accounts Department while failing to unseat Safford for the Mayor’s seat.

The press release addressed these losses and said they conducted surveys into what Democratic voters wanted to see from the party moving forward. According to the Committee, voters wanted to see new leadership and commitment to winning state races.

As for Kim, he will serve in an interim capacity until a new Chairperson can be elected sometime later this year.

Ballston Spa Mayor Returns from Hiatus

After a brief hiatus due to medical reasons, Mayor Frank Rossi announced his to day-today duties in Ballston Spa.

The announcement was made in a speech posted on Facebook on February 26. In the speech, Rossi talked about the reasons he took a leave of absence and said that he was feeling better.

“I feel a lot better.” Rossi said. “My blood pressure is much better. My sleep schedule and sleep consistency are much improved. I would have said I was perfectly ready to return to work without hesitation.”

Rossi had previously announced his decision to take a leave of absence in January, citing mental and physical health issues. His announcement came days after a lawsuit was filed alleging that a building owned by the Rossi family had failed to pay water taxes, as first reported in the Times Union.

In addition, a second lawsuit has been filed seeking to reverse an ethics board decision taking no action after a company Rossi’s brother works for received a contract to renovate

Wiswall Park in Ballston Spa.

In his speech Rossi addressed the two lawsuits, pushing back on the allegations and saying that in both cases, the ethics board ruled in his favor. He also talked about the personal toll, saying that while he doesn’t care about his reputation, he cares about the reputational harm to the village and his family caused by the allegations.

Rossi announced that he would not be resigning, citing the positive work he’d done over the last four years and the desire to continue not just his own work but that of past mayors and residents.

“Would me resigning tonight resolve these issues and solve the problems the village is facing?” Rossi said “No in fact, resigning would exacerbate the problems and the harm, in my view, it would derail what we’ve worked so hard to achieve, not just in these four years, but during Christine Fitzpatrick’s time, Larry Woolbright’s time, John Romanos time, Jim Capasso’s time, Burke Grandon’s time and Jim Capasso’s father’s time as mayor.”

In a video posted to Facebook, Ballston Spa Mayor Frank Rossi announced that he is not resigning and will be returning to office after a brief hiatus due to health reasons

Saratoga Peace Pod Celebrates 6 Years

BALLSTON SPA — The Saratoga Peace Pod, a group of crafters who create and deliver warm handmade items to those in need, is celebrating its sixyear anniversary.

The Peace Pod was established by Rachel Baum during the pandemic, when meetings were held virtually, and handcrafted items were collected from Pod members in the parking lot of the Saratoga Automobile Museum.

NYRA Holds Belmont Job Fair

The New York Racing Association (NYRA) hosted a Belmont Stakes Racing Festival job fair in the 1863 Club at Saratoga Race Course last Thursday. Prospective workers met with NYRA, Dyehard Fan Supply, Integrated Staffing, and Levy Restaurants, among others. Available positions included restaurant hosts and staff, premium experience team, mutuel clerks, cashiers, merchandise clerks, customer service, maintenance and grounds crew, white caps, parking attendants and security guards. Photo provided by ELA, Inc.

Currently, the Saratoga Peace Pod creates warm items for local organizations, including To Life!, The MoonCatcher Project, Wellspring, WAIT House, and the Veterans & Community Housing Coalition. Donations are also sent to the umbrella organization Knitting4Peace, to be distributed wherever there is a need.

The Saratoga Peace Pod is an offshoot of Knitting4Peace, whose mission is to harness the power of love through compassionate creative action that

invites, involves, and serves all women, children, and families in communities and countries around the world. It is comprised of thousands of knitters, crocheters, quilters, and supporters in the United States and Canada. Items created include hats, scarves, mittens, booties, baby blankets, baby bibs, afghans, quilted sleeping mats, Peace Pal dolls, shawls, and washcloths.

Members of the Saratoga Peace Pod meet one Sunday per month at Corina Contemporary

Jewelry at 10 Washington Street in Ballston Spa. Saratoga Peace Pod Coordinators Amy Thomas and Laurie Bouchard collect donations at this time and welcome interested crafters to join them there for tea and conversation. Crafters may also drop off donations at the shop anytime it is open.

Those interested in joining the Pod and receiving a monthly email notifying members of their next gathering can contact Amy and Laurie at saratogapeacepod@gmail.com.

Brews News: Tree House Anniversary Bash, Back Barn Opens in B-Spa, Mixed Breed Planning Malta Location

SARATOGA SPRINGS

— As wintertime hibernation ends and Saratogians dream of spring, local breweries are ready to start pouring.

Tree House, the wildly popular brewer acclaimed for its IPAs, will host a one-year anniversary party at its Saratoga location on Saturday, March 7. The event will include a pizza special (pepperoni pies with chipotle-lime sauce) and live music performed by Rich Ortiz and Matt Evans. In a social media announcement, Tree House also teased that the first week of March would be “very special” with (presumably) future announcements to come.

The Tree House taproom has become a live music hotspot of late, hosting artists on Friday nights from 6 to 9 p.m. Caity Gallagher played there on Feb. 27 and will return on March 27. Jimmi Justin Music, Russ Kennedy, John Stack, and Pat O’Connor are also slated for shows during March and April.

In other brews news, Back Barn Brewing officially opened the doors of its new Ballston Spa location (the historic Abner Doubleday House that was formerly the home of Real McCoy)

on Feb. 28. The brewer also teased that it’s “planning to celebrate throughout March so stay tuned.” Back Barn is a farm brewery based out of a renovated barn in Delanson, a village in Schenectady County about 50 miles southwest of Saratoga.

Malta is also replacing one brewery with another.

The Albany Business Review reported last week that Mixed Breed would take over the former home of Unified Beerworks, which closed its doors around the end of last year following seven years in business. Mixed Breed hopes to open its new taproom and restaurant in Malta by mid-April. Renovations are already underway.

Food News: Chipotle Opens, Broadway Deli for Sale, Primal Closes, New Chef,

MALTA — Four months after Chipotle opened a new location in downtown Saratoga Springs, another outpost of the Mexican grill has sprung up in Malta at 4 Kelch Drive, bringing the Saratoga County Chipotle total to four. The new Malta location is actively hiring for several positions, including kitchen leader, service leader, and crew member.

Saratoga’s Broadway Deli owner Daniel Chessare announced last week that he was putting his popular eatery up for sale. “The restaurant industry is tough,” Chessare wrote in a social media announcement. “I’ve been in it since 1997. Everything hurts and I’m tired all the time.” The deli is still in operation while a buyer is being sought. Meanwhile, Chessare will be active at his

other establishment, Bibulous, a colorful bar/hangout spot that focuses on deserts, cocktails, and appetizers.

The Olde Bryan Inn is repairing its vestibule after a “small car vs. entryway incident” occurred this past weekend. The inn reported that nobody was injured. “We always strive to make a good first impression, so please pardon our appearance while we make repairs,” the restaurant said.

Local butcher Primal announced the sudden closure of both its locations on Feb. 24. “Like some other local food businesses, the increasing pressures and costs to continue operating have become unsustainable,” Primal owner Tim Howland said. “As your local butcher, we prided ourselves on providing the very best products and service. We simply can no longer keep that promise.” Primal first opened in 2009 and

had locations in both Saratoga Springs and Albany.

Front Street Deli in Ballston Spa, which was taken over last month by Coffee Planet owner Kim Tribley, has reopened with an updated menu. Offerings include “build your own sandwich,” quesadillas, grinders, vegetarian options, and “build your own pizza.” Some of its more unique specialty pizzas include the jamming pie (bacon jam, onions, and a hot honey drizzle on white pizza) and hogtastic (ham, pepperoni, salami, and capicola with red or white sauce).

Panza’s, the classic Italian restaurant in Saratoga with a lineage that stretches back to a bakery that first opened in Mechanicville in 1897, announced last month that a new executive chef would take its reins: Elliott Vogel. Vogel’s resume includes positions at Siro’s, Jack’s Oyster House, and

Daley’s on Yates, a Schenectady eatery that closed in June. Vogel is a licensed forager who is “committed to sourcing thoughtfully and using local, seasonal products,” Panza’s said. “We invite you to experience his talents as he continues creating Panza’s iconic family recipes, while also infusing new energy into the menu with his inspired additions.”

Keuka Spring Vineyards, which launched its new tasting room and bottle shop on Spring Street in December, celebrated its opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Feb. 20. The Finger Lakes-based

ceremony to

winery initially opened a smaller outpost inside the Saratoga Marketplace in 2024 before deciding to upgrade to a larger space.

Katie Camarro, owner of Sundaes Best Hot Fudge Sauce, is hosting an antique sale at her hot fudge factory at 23 Northern Pines Road (Building 2, Suite 2102) in Wilton on Saturday, March 21 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Camarro and her friends have gathered antiques, vintage items, and collectibles especially for the sale. For more information, email KatieCamarro@gmail.com or call (518) 932-1988.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — There were still 99 days left until the Belmont Stakes, but that didn’t stop Saratoga horse people from converging at Henry Street

Taproom for Therapeutic Horses of Saratoga’s “Raise a Glass“ fundraiser last Thursday night.

At the event, a total of $9,440.57 was raised to support the care of retired racehorses and equine-assisted psychotherapy.

“A huge thank you to Henry

Street Taproom for being exceptional hosts and for their generosity in supporting this event,”

Therapeutic Horses wrote in a social media announcement.

“When a local nonprofit and a local business come together, the impact ripples far beyond one evening.”

Comfort Food Community Expands

Farm 2 Library Program with Southern Adirondack Library System, Increasing Access to Fresh Food in Saratoga County

Comfort Food Community (CFC), a nonprofit fighting rural hunger with innovative programming, is expanding its Farm 2 Library program to Saratoga Springs Public Library, Ballston Spa Public Library, and Round Lake Library – Malta Branch, in partnership with Southern Adirondack Library System (SALS). Fresh, nutritious, and local food will be accessible to anyone who needs it starting Wednesday, March 4, 2026. To celebrate this expansion, ribbon cuttings will be held at each new location.

Farm 2 Library is designed to be low-barrier and open access for people who may not have access to other sources of fresh, nutritious food. This food is provided free of charge to anyone who needs it with no registration or proof of need required. “Farm 2 Library is built on the belief that everyone deserves easy, stigma free access to fresh, healthy food. By partnering with the Southern Adirondack Library System and local public libraries—trusted, welcoming spaces—we’re removing barriers and making it simple for anyone to pick up what they need, no questions asked,” said Laura Marx, Executive Director of Comfort Food Community.

What began as a pilot program in 2017, starting with one library, has grown significantly, distributing over 42,000 pounds of food in 2025. CFC now serves 14 libraries across Washington, Warren, and Saratoga counties, providing fresh produce from our local New York State farm partners.

Each week, libraries display a list of farms where the

Two High School Students Awarded Full Tuition Scholarships to ACPHS

produce was grown to let people know where their food is coming from. Because this program depends on local farms and seasonal availability, there are often more uncommon items that are distributed like kohlrabi or celeriac, especially during the winter.

“In New York State, our growing season is shortened during the winter due to colder temperatures and reduced daylight,” said Em Ambrose, CFC’s Food Access Coordinator. “We are able to access lots of highquality storage roots, like carrots or sweet potatoes, during these months and get excited when April comes, when we start to see new availability from our producers for vegetables like fresh spinach.”

CFC also shares weekly recipes featuring the produce distributed, helping people feel confident trying new foods and learning more about what is available when.

“Expanding Farm 2 Library to three additional locations means more families across our region can access fresh, healthy food alongside the educational opportunities that empower them to thrive,” said Kim Bolan, Executive Director of the Southern Adirondack Library System. “Today’s libraries are more than places for books — they are trusted community anchors that connect people to vital resources, lifelong learning, and one another. This initiative reflects exactly what libraries are here to do.”

Two deserving high school seniors were recently notified that they were chosen to receive full-tuition scholarships beginning in Fall 2026 at Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.

Ballston Spa High School student, Lyla Charlebois, received quite the surprise when ACPHS Senior Associate Director of Admissions, Sarah Ohnsman, visited the school to share the exciting news with her.

Lyla is seeking to pursue a bachelor’s degree in health sciences with the goal of becoming a physician assistant. She is a student-athlete, National Honors Society honoree, and community-service committed student. BSHS Counselor Mara Gallagher and Lyla’s parents, Frank and Megan, were onsite to witness the surprise announcement at the school.

The second student, Ella Foote, is a senior at Norwich High School in Norwich, New York, and a community volunteer. Ella is considering a career in pharmacy because of her past work and shadowing experiences.

Both students were chosen for their impressive participation and engagement during

Scholarship Day led by ACPHS faculty including Margaret Doll, Public Health; Michelle Parent, Clinical Laboratory & Health Sciences; Stephen Maher, Forensic Psychology, Psychology, & Forensic Science; Eric Yager, Biomedical Sciences; and Tom Lodise, Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences.

The professors laid out the groundwork for an anthrax

attack threat discovered by the CIA. By working through the case study, the students learned the roles and responsibilities of various personnel involved in averting or minimizing the effects of a bioterrorism attack. They also gained an appreciation for the importance of a team approach in identifying and responding to health threats.

Corned Beef, The Leftovers

This is a reprint story from 03/07/25

SATURDAYS

9:30 A.M. - 1:30 P.M. WILTON MALL FOOD COURT

Theleftovers of a corned beef dinner can be plentiful. Our ‘go to’ is always a good old-fashioned reuben sandwich built with the corned beef, Thousand Island dressing, Swiss cheese and coleslaw on rye bread toasted for greatness. Yes, we swap out the sauerkraut but you can use that too.

However, corned beef can be used for so many other unique recipe combinations that really changes the entire flavor. Here are a few options to consider. Or, maybe you don’t like a traditional corned beef dinner after all and want to make these your main course? Either way, don’t let any of it go to waste!

The Saratoga Farmers’ Market is currently open Saturdays, 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., November through April at Wilton Mall Food Court; accessible from the mall entrance across from BJs. The CDTA’s 450 (from Schenectady) and 452 (from Skidmore College via downtown Saratoga) run to the Mall hourly Saturday mornings.

Bake for 20 to 25 minutes in the preheated oven, or until golden. Spread 1/2 of the salad dressing over hot crust. Sprinkle with 1/2 of the Swiss cheese. Arrange corned beef on top of cheese, then drizzle with remaining salad dressing. Top with sauerkraut and remaining Swiss cheese. Sprinkle with caraway seed.

Bake for another 10 minutes in the preheated oven, until cheese melts and toppings are heated through. Sprinkle with chopped pickle. Let stand for 5 minutes before slicing.

Hello my Foodie Friends!

Oftentimes when I am asked what I want for dinner, I respond “what ever you make, I want potatoes with it”. Growing up with an Irish father, we often had potatoes as a staple to each meal. However, my father did not like it when I played with my food, and I enjoyed playing with my mashed potatoes. I loved melting butter in my potatoes and then taking the gravy and making a mashed potato and gravy volcano or mashed potato snowmen.

As I was restocking kitchen gadget supplies in our store, I had to smile recalling my childhood antics and the feel of my father glaring at me during my kitchen table play time. Part of my play time did also include going through my mother’s gadget drawer and trying to figure out what everything did. Many of us have a kitchen full of gadgets. Some we use daily, and some are hiding in our cupboards because we have no idea how to use them. Sometimes it’s good to take a good long look at

BEST SPUDS

the gadgets you own and determine what’s really useful and what is just taking up space.

Whether you’re a proud avid cook or just starting your cooking endeavors, learning about different kitchen tools can be helpful. Some devices might seem like they only have one use. However, this certainly isn’t the case for potato ricers. I can clearly recall my mother using the potato ricer as she made various recipes with potatoes. This was one of her much-used gadgets. If you’ve never seen a potato ricer, it is built like an oversized garlic press. It has two handles you squeeze together, pressing the food and pushing it through the basket’s holes.

Many potato ricer discs can be switched out to have differentsized slots, which makes it a versatile kitchen utensil.

My mother would often attest that the only way she would make mashed potatoes was using a ricer. The reason is that mashed potatoes made with a ricer helps to prevent over mashing that may make

your mashed potatoes gluey. The ricer is gentle on potatoes and provides an even mash that gives them a nice texture.

To achieve clump-free mashed potatoes, most experts recommend using a ricer. A ric-er is made up of the hopper, where you place the potato, and the plunger, which you press down to force the potato out. Forcing the cooked mealy potato through the ricer’s small holes creates rice-sized pieces of potato (hence the name) and the air that is in-corporated while pressing contributes to the light fluffiness.

We love cool tools for cooks. Stop by Compliments to the Chef, your Neighborhood Kitchen and Cutlery store located at 33 Railroad Place for the tools that make life a bit easier and can help you make your best spuds. Remember my Foodie Friends; “Life Happens in the Kitchen”.

Music and Storytelling Event to Raise Funds for Homeless Veterans

SARATOGA SPRINGS —

RallySound, a nonprofit working to empower community through music, will host “Songwriters in the Round – An Evening of Music and Storytelling” on Thursday, April 16 at The Anthony “Skip” Scirocco Music Hall in Saratoga Springs.

A pay-what-you-can event, the evening will feature Adam Ezra, Margo Macero, and Melanie Krahmer & Rich Libutti of Sirsy performing some of their favorite songs and sharing the stories behind them. Jazz Legend Blows the Lid off UPH

Jonathon Norcross Saratoga TODAY

SARATOGA SPRINGS —

Master of sax Branford Marsalis brought his quartet to the Spa City last Friday night, tearing his way through a set that spanned sonically from melodious to an almost-violent composition by bassist Eric Revis that Marsalis called a “2 a.m. with handcuffs” kind of love song.

The Grammy-winning Marsalis has many claims to fame, including collaborations with the Grateful Dead, Sting, Dave Matthews, Spike Lee, Public Enemy, and Phil Collins. From 1992 to 1995, he was the leader of the “Tonight Show with Jay Leno” band.

But in 2026, at 65 years young, Marsalis took the UPH audience on a journey that spanned from the Depressionera Jimmy McHugh tune “Sunny Side of the Street” (which Marsalis called “a wonderful song of American optimism”); the 1928 hit by the Paul Whiteman Orchestra, “There Ain’t No Sweet Man That’ Worth the Salt of My Tears”; the 1960-recorded John Coltrane

tune “26-2”; and 1974’s “Long As You Know You’re Living Yours,” a Keith Jarrett cover. Also performed was an audience-led rendition of “Happy Birthday,” sung in honor of pianist/birthday boy Joey Calderazzo.

A highlight was the encore “Nikaste,” an original composition by bassist Eric Revis. After some on-stage back-and-forth as to whether the song would be played towards the end of the set or during the encore, Marsalis’ quartet erupted with the unconventional love song. “You tell me what kind of ‘love’ you think this is,” Marsalis quipped before his drummer Justin Faulkner practically committed a violent crime upon his kit. Faulkner also displayed his grin-inducing habit of exclaiming “Aaahhh” every time he seemed to be enjoying himself.

This year, as Marsalis pointed out before playing “262”, is John Coltrane’s centennial. Saratogians can celebrate 100 years of the pioneering saxophonist at the forthcoming Saratoga Jazz Festival, which will include a salute to Coltrane by the Skidmore Jazz Institute Faculty All-Stars.

SPAC Announces

“Groundbreaking,”

One-Night-Only BalletX Performance

SARATOGA SPRINGS —

The Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) announced Wednesday that BalletX, Philadelphia’s premier contemporary ballet company, will present the SPAC premiere of “The Four Seasons Reimagined” in a special one-night, paviliononly performance on Thursday, June 11.

The immersive, eveninglength work marks BalletX’s first full-company, headlining engagement on the SPAC Amphitheater stage and arrives just days after its world premiere. The company previously performed in the Spa Little Theater and appeared as a guest with The Philadelphia Orchestra on the main stage.

“This season at SPAC, we are reflecting on The Four Seasons—an idea that resonates deeply with our home in Saratoga Spa State Park and with SPAC’s evolution as a vibrant, year-round organization,” said Elizabeth Sobol, CEO of SPAC. “We are proud to have supported the creation of this bold and ambitious work, which beautifully reflects our commitment to environmental awareness and sustainability, inspiring audiences to consider both the majesty and fragility of the natural world that surrounds us. We are also thrilled to welcome regional organizations dedicated to conservation and sustainability, offering them the opportunity to share their work with our audiences and join us for this shared artistic experience.”

“The Four Seasons Reimagined” is a new production that ushers audiences into an immersive landscape shaped by sound, movement, light, and design. Composer and electronic musician Dan Deacon creates and performs an original score live on stage with his nine-member band. Four choreographers—Morgann Runacre-Temple (Summer), Penny Saunders (Fall), Jamar Roberts (Winter), and Trey McIntyre (Spring)—each bring a distinct season to life, revealing nature as the driving force

at the heart of the story: fragile, fierce, and magnificently alive.

“We are so grateful to work on this larger-than-life project with Saratoga Performing Arts Center,” said BalletX Artistic and Executive Director Christine Cox. “The Four Seasons Reimagined” is a celebration two years in the making and we’re honored to premiere it as part of America250. Creating alongside Dan Deacon, Penny Saunders, Jamar Roberts, Trey McIntyre, Morgann RunacreTemple, Emma Kingsbury, Christopher Ash and our company of dancers has been the experience of a lifetime and the result is truly unique –four world premieres, one epic score, one beautiful love letter to Mother Nature.”

At the heart of the project is a newly commissioned score by Deacon. Known for his genre-defying sound and epic-scale live performances, Deacon will reinterpret Vivaldi’s iconic work with an avant-garde, modern edge. Performed live alongside his nine-piece ensemble of musicians, several taking on multiple instruments, the score reflects the shifting seasons and our relationship with the natural world.

“Randy and I are incredibly grateful that our music has endured all these years,” Cummings said. “Knowing that people still want to hear these songs live means everything to us, and when we go out on

stage, our goal is to truly honor the music.”

The Guess Who, sometimes referred to as “the Canadian Beatles,” released 11 studio albums, all of which charted in both Canada and the United States. They’ve placed 14 singles in the US Top 40 chart and more than 30 in Canada. Local Author Publishing Debut Fantasy Novel

WILTON — J.R.R. Tolkien.

George R.R. Martin. Z.R. Coffin.

A Wilton resident will soon join the ranks of published fantasy authors when his debut novel, “Fallen Light,” is released the week of March 16.

The novel centers on Isaac, an arcanist tasked with retrieving an artifact located inside an ancient temple hidden in a remote forest. When attempting to grab the artifact, Isaac is ambushed and soon realizes there is a traitor amongst his arcanist clan.

“It’s a very character-driven story,” Coffin told Saratoga TODAY. “I have magic and all these different races, like elves and orcs and dwarves and the typical high fantasy stuff. But what I focus on the most is how these characters interact with each other.”

Coffin got the fantasy bug when he was a kid, beginning his education with “Lord of

the Rings” and “Star Wars.” He sparked his creativity by playing “Dungeons & Dragons” and other roleplaying fantasy games.

He put his imagination to the test in a high school writers group, which joined other local school districts for conferences that included author-led workshops. In college, he grew from short stories to novels, drawing upon ideas he generated during D&D campaigns.

“I started trying to storyboard, and I wrote probably three novels that will never see the light of day because they’re not very good,” Coffin said. “But I refined that over the years and eventually got to [“Fallen Light”].”

Although many would-be novelists tend to kick around a book idea before tossing it into a desk drawer, Coffin realized his vision by a simple but effective method: Love of the game.

One of Coffin’s favorite fantasy authors, Brandon Sanderson, posts writing courses to YouTube. In those lectures,

Sanderson says he asked himself an important question: If I could never publish my books, would I still write? The answer, for both Sanderson and Coffin, was an emphatic “yes.”

“There’s an intrinsic kind of enjoyment to me doing it,” Coffin said of his writing. “Even if I just shared it with my friends and family, that’s good enough for me.”

Sanderson is something of a hero to self-published authors. His 2022 Kickstarter campaign to self-publish four novels earned him more than $41 million donated by 185,000-plus backers. Last month, the rights to Sanderson’s “Cosmere” books were picked up by Apple TV. The deal, described as “unprecedented” by The Hollywood Reporter, grants Sanderson near-complete creative control over the forthcoming adaptations of his work.

Coffin isn’t necessarily setting his sights as high as the singular Sanderson, but the

self-publishing route is an increasingly popular one for many writers. Some authors with work released by major publishers have told Saratoga TODAY that despite the backing of a traditional publisher, they still spend a lot of their time marketing their own books and pouring countless hours into growing their social media followings. Many of them also have to work full-time jobs outside of their busy writing schedules, just to make ends meet.

“Figure out what you want to do first,” Coffin advises firsttime authors. “Don’t really prescribe to what people are telling you you have to do. Figure out

what aligns with how your life works and your interests, and then go from there.”

Coffin utilized the services of The Troy Book Makers, a company that aims to produce “attractive, well-designed books at a low cost” and has released dozens of titles.

From conception to completion, Coffin estimates he spent about five or six years working on “Fallen Light.” With the book’s release imminent, prospective readers are advised to visit Coffin’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/zrcoffinauthor) for publishing updates. The novel will soon be available on Amazon and at local bookstores.

Malta-Based Percussionist Releases New “Junkman” Album

MALTA — Malta resident, composer, and percussionist Donald Knaack (aka The Junkman) is celebrating more than 40 years of composing music for contemporary dance companies by releasing a compendium of 12 of his most popular compositions.

Knaack’s long and productive career includes performances and commissions from The Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, The Discover Jazz Festival, and the Kansas City International Jazz Festival. He’s also toured with Eminem, The BlackEyed Peas, Ice T, and Phish. He’s created music for television commercials for brands such as Nike, ESPN, the NBA, Airbnb, and Electronic Arts.

More than 25 years ago, Knaack, a classically trained musician, stopped using traditional music instruments in favor of

using junk and reused materials.

“The timbres of these materials instantly gave my music an original uniqueness, like someone being given a set of new and

different colors to paint with,” Knaack said.

Saratoga Clay Arts Center Presents New Joint Exhibition

SCHUYLERVILLE — A

joint exhibition featuring functional and sculptural ceramic works by local artists Maria Rosenblum and W.D. Pitney will premiere on March 21 (with an opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m.) at the Saratoga Clay Arts Center’s Schacht Gallery. Admission is free. The exhibit, titled “Objective Form : Subjective Disorder,” will run until May 2.

Pitney and Rosenblum have been firing atmospheric and reduction kilns together for the past five years.

“Trained as a potter, I am now devoted to meshing functional and sculptural concepts to produce pedestal vessels and naturalistic shallow bowls,” said Rosenblum. “This precarious balance is rooted in my youth exploring the extraordinary

tides and shallows of the Bay of Fundy in Nova Scotia.”

“With my functional pieces, I’ve been working with porcelain slip to create surface textures to invoke gesture, expression, and energy,” said Pitney. “Ultimately, I believe craft serves community by elevating, inspiring, and uniting people through form and process.”

The Schacht Gallery at Saratoga Clay Arts Center is located at 167 Hayes Road in Schuylerville.

Charity Hockey Game Returning to Weibel Ice Rink

SARATOGA SPRINGS

— The Saratoga Fire Hockey Team will present the secondannual St. Baldrick’s Cup, a charity hockey game between Saratoga Fire and the Albany Firefighters hockey team, on Sunday, March 15 at the Weibel Ice Rink in Saratoga Springs (30 Weibel Avenue).

All proceeds raised will go to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, which has the goal of conquering childhood cancer by funding the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers, develop better treatments with fewer long-term side effects, and help survivors lead long and healthy lives.

The day begins at 10 a.m. when doors open, offering attendees the opportunity to participate in head shavings, a signature St. Baldrick’s fundraising activity that raises additional funds while symbolizing solidarity with children undergoing treatment. Admission donations will be collected at the door to directly benefit the cause.

The hockey game itself has

a scheduled puck drop time of 11 a.m. During the game, there will be multiple fundraising activities going on, including a 50/50 raffle, various donations being raffled off, and the jersey silent auction. The Saratoga Fire hockey team will be wearing a special edition St. Patrick’s Day theme jerseys which will be auctioned off and given to the winners after the game.

Following the game, the celebration will continue at King’s Tavern, where a portion of food sales from 1 to 5 p.m. will be donated to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation.

Last year’s inaugural St. Baldrick’s Cup, which featured the Saratoga Fire Hockey Team against the Worcester Firefighters, successfully raised $7,000 for childhood cancer research. Building on that momentum, the goal is to raise more than last year with all proceeds going to help fight childhood cancers.

Saratoga’s Rocky Balboa: How Danny Dacey Won Despite Losing

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Injured, facing the 11th-best high school wrestler in the country, and derailed by a controversial call, Danny Dacey was hit with a series of insurmountable obstacles at the state championships in Albany last weekend.

How the Saratoga Springs grappler chose to deal with those hurdles left his coach gobsmacked.

“He did such an amazing thing at such an amazing moment,” Coach Jake Zanetti told Saratoga TODAY.

Dacey entered states as the No. 3 seed. He defeated Peter Mikedis in the semifinals, but may have torn his meniscus while doing so. Set to face Griffin LaPlante in the finals, Dacey had to overcome a bum knee to defeat a No. 1 seed who had already captured a state title. It would’ve been an uphill battle, even if Dacey was fully healthy.

But then something remarkable happened. About 45 seconds into the first period, Dacey executed a cement mixer that planted LaPlante onto his back. Holding him there for nearly a minute, it seemed like Dacey might be able to pull off the upset. But LaPlante began bleeding from his nose, so the referees stopped the action to check on LaPlante. A chorus of boos rained down on the officials as spectators questioned the decision to interrupt the match.

“It’s definitely a tough choice,” Zanetti said of the refs’ controversial call. “If they let the match run out till the end of the period, if they just let the match

NYRA Announces Summer Stakes Schedule

SARATOGA SPRINGS

— The New York Racing Association (NYRA) recently announced the stakes schedule for the 2026 summer meet at Saratoga Race Course, which will open July 3 and continue through Labor Day, Sept. 7.

A few highlights include:

• Leo O’Brien on July 5

• Diana on July 18

• American Oaks on July 25

• Jim Dandy on Aug. 1

• A.P. Smithwick Memorial on Aug. 5

• John Morrissey on Aug. 6

• Whitney on Aug. 8

• Christophe Clement Turf on Aug. 15

• Alabama on Aug. 22

go for the six [remaining] seconds, that would have been fine… But by rule, they probably did the right thing because the referees can always say that they’re looking out for the safety of the wrestlers and the competitors. They’re able to do that in any position. But anyone who’s been around the world of wrestling knows that you don’t really take a guy off his back in that type of position. You just don’t really do it. It was kind of crazy.”

Dacey was up 9-3 heading into the second period, but LaPlante was back up on his feet. The nationally-ranked wrestler then scored enough points to secure the victory and the state title.

Many athletes, be they high schoolers or professionals, wouldn’t have taken those

events in stride, especially with a state championship on the line. But Dacey “responded like a champion,” Zanetti said. “He was the last person to complain or call out the refs for doing the wrong thing. He took it like a class act, a good sport, a senior captain, and a leader who understands the sport and was aware that this ref made a call that really hurt him, but ultimately he had no control over it. The fact that Danny made it a close match, let alone getting that close to winning, was such a great thing that he should be proud of for the rest of his life.”

Dacey hopes to continue his wrestling journey at a Division 1 school, and Zanetti believes that at states, the Blue Streak “showed he’s capable of doing special things at the next level.”

• Travers on Aug. 29

• Jonathan Sheppard Memorial on Sept. 2

• Spinaway on Sept. 5

• Spendthrift Farm Hopeful on Sept. 6

Racers Fall in Final Contest, Prepare for Playoffs

MECHANICVILLE — The Saratoga Racers’ near-Cinderella story collapsed in the second half of a tense March 1 game against the undefeated, top-ranked Buffalo Extreme.

The first quarter was a vicious back-and-forth battle that produced a few fouls, a few turnovers, and a lot of chatter from the Buffalo bench. Obviously intent on preserving their flawless regular season record, Buffalo began widening their lead in the opening stanza until Saratoga nailed a triple, induced a turnover, and then laid in an easy bucket to bring themselves within three points.

As the final seconds of the first quarter ticked away, the Racers’ RJ Rosa sank another three-pointer, literally at the buzzer, to tie the game at 31-31. The crowd, one of the biggest and most enthusiastic Racers audiences in the team’s two-year history, erupted.

Early in the second quarter, Saratoga pulled ahead by five, thanks to its relentless defense. With a touch under nine minutes left before halftime, the first of at least two on-court altercations broke out. A pair of officials and a coach broke up the dispute before a technical foul was issued.

Despite the distraction, Saratoga fought to maintain an edge, leading by anywhere from three to six points during the second stanza. With just two minutes remaining in the first half, the Racers had a one-point lead. A thunderous dunk from Racer’s star Juwan Malone helped deny a Buffalo comeback. At halftime, Saratoga was ahead 62-59 and on their way to becoming the first American Basketball Association (ABA) team to take down the Extreme.

But then fortunes changed. Buffalo launched into the second half with a 9-0 run until Rosa stopped the bleeding with a jumper. In only a few minutes, however, the Extreme had rocketed to a ten-point lead. That advantage steadily climbed until suddenly Buffalo

was up by 20 points and seemed to be manhandling Saratoga with ease.

Saratoga was also the victim of its own errors. A number of missed free throws kept the squad from reducing their disadvantage to single digits. One missed free throw resulted in another technical foul that inspired a Buffalo coach to hurl his clipboard across the corner of the court. As tensions mounted, the Extreme nailed a shot from well behind the arc at the third quarter buzzer, solidifying what would prove to be an insurmountable lead.

The fourth quarter was an ugly one. The game ended at 143-127 after another on-court altercation caused officials to call off the contest with 40-some seconds still on the clock. John Ryals III led all Saratoga scorers with 30 points. Malone added 22 and Donovan Williams contributed 21.

Despite the tough finish to their regular season, the Racers are nonetheless well-positioned for the playoffs. The team has been placed in the ABA East Region Blue Division as the

No. 3 seed. They’ll next head to Vermont, to take on the No. 2 seed Coyotes, for a 7 p.m. Sunday night game at Barre Municipal Auditorium.

Although only one seed apart, the 11-5 Racers have a considerable advantage over the 12-11 Coyotes. They’ve beaten the Vermont squad in three out of four contests this season.

Now ranked #24 nationally among all ABA teams, Saratoga will hope to make a dent in their second-ever postseason appearance.

The Racers also have two players up for ABA All-Star contention: Ryals and Williams. Williams, a point guard, averaged 15 points on 57% shooting this year, adding an average of 4 rebounds, 6 assists, and 2.5 steals per game. He accumulated 3 double-doubles and 1 triple-double this season. Ryals averaged 21 points per game on 53% shooting. He also averaged 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals per contest. He scored more than 30 points three times this season, including an impressive 36-point performance against Buffalo.

Ice Cream Brand Sponsors Injured Saratoga Jockey

SARATOGA SPRINGS

— Hildebrandt’s Ice Cream recently announced that it will sponsor jockey Dylan Davis, who is making his return to horse racing after incurring a host of injuries following a frightening spill at Aqueduct Racetrack late last year.

Davis is a graduate of Saratoga Springs High School and regularly competes at The Spa.

“Hildebrandt’s is honored to support one of horse racing’s most respected riders at such a pivotal moment in his career,” the ice cream maker said in a press release. “This partnership reflects the brand’s commitment to perseverance, excellence, and standing behind individuals who embody resilience both on and off the track.”

“Thank you for the support with me returning back to ride today,” Davis wrote in a Feb. 28 social media post.

On Nov. 14, Davis racked up a slew of injuries, including nine fractured ribs, a collapsed left lung, and a broken right collarbone. His brother

Robbie Jr. created a GoFundMe to help pay for medical bills, physical therapy, rehab, and living expenses. The horse racing world responded to this call for aid by contributing $18,190 in just a handful of days, far surpassing the requested $12,000 goal.

Davis, who earned 21 firstplace finishes and more than $2.6 million in earnings riding at Saratoga Race Course in 2025, belongs to a family that has been prominent in the New

York horse racing scene for decades. He and his sister Katie, a jockey who was featured in the Netflix docuseries “Race for the Crown,” grew up near the Saratoga Race Course, where they fell in love with the sport thanks to their father Robbie, a popular jockey in the 1980s. In addition to Dylan and Katie, the Davis family also includes Jacqueline (aka Jackie, a jockey based in the Finger Lakes) and Edmund (aka Eddie), a rising horse trainer.
