John James Sanders
ESPERANCE, NY - John
James Sanders, 60, passed away at his home in Esperance, New York, on June 5, 2026. His wife, Vanessa, was by his side.
John was born in Ilion, New York, on July 29, 1965, to Luke John Sanders and Mary Ellen (“Kitty”) Gerling. He was raised in part by his grandmother, Florence H. Sanders, whose influence helped shape the man he would become. He was also blessed by the love and support of the Reid family throughout his life.
John learned the value of hard work at an early age, beginning at just nine years old, and carried those lifelong lessons with him throughout his life. One of his first employers told him that if he could be 15 minutes late, he could be 15 minutes early, and he never forgot those words. By the age of 15, he had learned to drive a truck and later traveled across the country during his years as a truck driver.
After completing High School in Frankfort, John moved to Saratoga Springs in 1984, where he met his dearest friend, Billy James.
In 1988, he met the love of his life, Vanessa Sanders. Together they shared a remarkable and enduring love story that will continue beyond his lifetime. They were officially married on December 9, 2012, at the Gideon Putnam in Saratoga Springs.
John began his career in the automotive industry in 1991 and steadily advanced to become Service Manager at New Country Lexus of Latham. During more than two decades there, and throughout his many years in the industry, he formed lasting friendships and earned the respect of colleagues and customers alike. He was a mentor and father figure to many and took great pride in knowing he had made a positive difference in their lives.
John loved the outdoors and shared countless adventures throughout New York and across the country with Vanessa and his stepdaughter, Samantha Rosenbaum. Together they created memories that will be cherished forever. His favorite journeys included trips to Oregon to see his daughter, Samantha Ablott, and his granddaughters; visiting Italy with his wife; and going to London with his wife and son, Luke.
Throughout his life, he carried on the fishing tradition that he shared with his father from a very young age, and thoroughly
enjoyed time spent on the Salmon River fishing with his dear friend, Kevin Clarke.
John was immensely proud of his children and grandchildren: his daughter, Samantha Ablott, her husband, Mike Ablott, and their children, Emma, Annabelle, and Bexley; his son, Luke Sanders; his daughter, Julia Sanders; and his stepdaughter, Samantha Rosenbaum.
Above all else, John valued love and family. His final wish was that those he loved keep him in their hearts.
His legacy will live on in the lives he touched, the lessons he shared, and the love he gave so completely. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
His funeral will be held Saturday, June 20, 2026 at 4:00 PM in the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes (628 North Broadway, Saratoga Springs, NY)

Michael J. Eagan
SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY- Michael J. Eagan, age 52, of Saratoga Springs, NY passed away at his home on June 13, 2026.
Born on October 31, 1973, in Saratoga, Michael was the son of Elizabeth (Betty) Eagan- née Perosi, and the late Bob Eagan.
Michael grew up in Saratoga Springs. As a young boy, he enjoyed horseback riding, fishing and played baseball for the Elks- who captured the Saratoga National Minor League Championships in 1983. As a teen, he was very enthusiastic about hunting and looked forward to going hunting with his father.
Michael worked as an electrician in NYC and later on established Eagan Electric in Saratoga. He was a skilled electrician and never hesitated to help family and friends with various projects.
Outside of work, Michael had many hobbies. He especially enjoyed fishing and hunting

Saratoga County Animal Shelter to Hold Open House and Adoption Event
The Saratoga County Animal Shelter is hosting an Open House and Adoption Event from 10AM to 3PM at 6010 County Farm Rd, Ballston Spa on Saturday, June 20. No appointments are necessary! The shelter has approximately 20 dogs and 30 cats looking for loving homes.
This family-friendly event offers animal lovers of all ages a chance to interact with the animals and speak with staff about animal adoption, fostering, volunteering at the Shelter and more.

Meet Tigger!!
Meet Tigger, a beautiful tabby cat who came to HOPE after a community member realized they were in over their head with too many cats and kittens. Tigger was very pregnant and due any day so we promptly got her into an experienced foster home. She gave birth to 3 kittens on April 17th but sadly one passed shortly after birth. Tigger has been an amazing mother to her two surviving kittens and will be ready for adoption in the next month or so after she is spayed, vaccinated and fully vetted. Her foster parents say that her personality is absolutely awesome. She was protective of her babies at first but as the days went along she became extremely affectionate and loving once she realized they were all safe and loved. It is hard to get photographs of her because she is so excited to see her foster parents that she immediately runs to them for pets and attention. She did live with other cats in her previous home so may be ok with a feline friend
with proper introductions. She also seems unphased by the dogs in the foster home although they have not been in direct contact.

Saratoga Springs Man Arrested for Lasering a State Police Helicopter
Northumberland Man Sentenced for Strangling Woman and Abusing Dog who Tried to Stop Him

As Saratoga Springs man has been arrested after he allegedly pointed a laser pointer at a New York State Police Helicopter while it was conducting a training exercise.
Daymian Massago, 20, of Saratoga Springs was arrested on June 12 and charged with Felony directing a laser at an aircraft. He’s accused of intentionally shining a laser pointer at the aircraft.
According to the New York State Police, the incident occurred on June 11, 2026, around 10:10 p.m. The helicopter, a State Police Airbus H14D3, was conducting a training exercise when the laser was shined on the aircraft. The laser caused a “temporary visual disturbance” and forced the helicopter to alter its flight path.
Investigations determined that the laser originated from Louden Road in Saratoga Springs and Massago was arrested the next day. New York State Police confirmed to Saratoga TODAY
that no troopers were injured in the lasering and the incident was reported to both the FBI and FAA. Court records indicate that no federal charges have been filed as of the time of publication.
Flight records provided by Flightradar24 show that the helicopter took off from a helipad at Albany International Airport at around 9:30 p.m. and began flying around Saratoga County at about 2000 feet barometric altitude.
At around 10:06 p.m., the altitude of the aircraft began dropping, hitting 875 feet before climbing back to over 2000 feet at 10:12 p.m. The aircraft briefly circled Loudon Road before resuming its flight to the north. It returned to Albany International Airport around 11:40 p.m.
Lasering an aircraft is both a state and federal offense. On the federal level, offenders can face a prison sentence of up to five years in jail and up $11,000 in fines. In New York, directing a laser pointer at an aircraft is a Class E felony and can result in up to four years in prison.
Saratoga County District Attorney Brett Eby announced recently the sentencing of Michael Blair following his convictions for Strangulation in the Second Degree and Animal Cruelty. Blair was sentenced to four years in New York State Prison, followed by five years of post-release supervision.
As part of the sentence, Blair will be added to the Saratoga County Animal Abuse Registry and will be subject to a no-animal order prohibiting him from owning, possessing, or residing with animals.
On December 4, 2025, Michael Blair, with the intent to impede the normal breathing of his then-girlfriend, applied significant pressure to her throat during a domestic violence altercation. Blair also abused
the victim’s dog when the animal attempted to intervene in an effort to protect her.
“This case highlights the well-documented connection between animal abuse and domestic violence,” Eby said. “Acts of cruelty toward animals are often warning signs of broader patterns of violence and control. By aggressively prosecuting these offenses, we not only protect vulnerable animals but also help safeguard victims of domestic abuse. The victim in this case showed tremendous courage and strength by standing up to her abuser and participating in the prosecution despite the abuse she faced. Her bravery helped ensure accountability and prevented further harm.”
The case was prosecuted by Special Victims Unit
Bureau Chief Rachael Phelan and Senior Assistant District Attorney Mary T. Northrup.
“Chief Phelan and Senior ADA Northrup demonstrated extraordinary dedication throughout this prosecution,” said District Attorney Brett Eby. “Their commitment to seeking justice for victims and holding offenders accountable exemplifies the very best of our office. Their tireless work helped secure a result that protects both people and animals from further harm.”
District Attorney Eby also thanked members of the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office for their investigative work and collaboration throughout the case, including Deputy Leah Howe, Deputy Michael Deuel, Deputy Justin Sicko, and Deputy Jakob McCasland.

17 Horses Dead in Harness Track Barn Fire

17 horses have died after a fire destroyed a horse barn at the Saratoga Casino Hotel harness racing facility on Nelson Avenue.
The fire was first reported on June 16, 2026, around 2:30 a.m. according to the Saratoga Springs Fire Department. When firefighters arrived on scene, they found the barn engulfed in flames.
“Due to the advanced fire conditions, crews initiated a defensive fire attack while simultaneously working to protect adjacent structures and prevent further fire spread,” The fire department said in a statement.
The barn had been used to house 18 horses, of whom 17 died in the fire. The surviving horse escaped the fire with minor injuries, according to a press release issued by the Saratoga Casino Hotel and the Saratoga Harness Horsepersons Association.
A later press release identified the horses killed as Arlanda, Conquest As, Crazy Jet, Five Star Lou, Free Willy Hanover, Gimlet Hanover, Influencer, Lyons
Dukey, Muscle Dynasty, Our Father Lindy, Perfect Bang, Quite Like Me, Race Me Bombshell, Shalamar Hanover, Trackstar, Tropical Cyclone, and Red.
The horses belonged to trainer Robyn Mangiardi who lost 11 horses and trainer Timothy Benson who lost six horses.
“The loss suffered today is heartbreaking for our racing community,” said Sam Gerrity, Chief Executive Officer of Saratoga Casino Hotel. “Our thoughts remain with Robyn, Tim, their teams, the horse owners, and everyone affected by this tragedy. We are deeply grateful to the security personnel, first responders, and racing staff whose swift actions helped protect the horses and people in the surrounding barns.”
While the backstretch area typically houses 350 horses, first responders and track personnel were able to successfully evacuate the horses from nearby structures. Firefighters were also able to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby structures.
“This is a sobering day in our industry, a horse person’s worst nightmare,” said
Henry Westbrook, President, Saratoga Harness Horseperson’s Association. “We express our deep condolences to all impacted and thank all emergency responders and track workers for their quick response.”
In response to the fire, the Saratoga Casino Hotel said that they were working with Saratoga Hospital to provide grief counseling services to those impacted and that a memorial service will be held for the horses lost in the fire. They also announced that they would be donating $100,000 to the Saratoga Harness Horseperson’s Association.
Tributes and offers of support have poured in from the racing community and beyond.
“Horse racing in New York is a community of hard-working people linked together by a shared commitment to the horses, David O’Rourke, NYRA President & CEO, said in a statement.
“This morning’s tragic fire at the Saratoga Hotel Casino Harness Track will have a profound impact on that community, and NYRA extends our condolences to all those affected by this loss. NYRA stands ready to support
our neighbors at Saratoga Hotel Casino with any assistance they may need at this time.”
On June 17, NYRA announced that they would be donating $50,000 to the Saratoga Harness Horseperson’s Association and selling a t-shirt to raise money for the organization. The shirts will be sold in person on July 3, Opening Day of the summer meet. They will also be sold online starting June 19 and at the Saratoga Casino Hotel Harness Track during its Sunset Saturday Series.
In addition, the New York Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association announced that it would donate $10,000 to the Saratoga Harness Horseperson’s Association
Within hours of the fire, a Go Fund Me was set up to raise money for those impacted. As
of publication, that effort raised around $79,000 with around 500 donations made.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Saratoga Springs Fire Department, Saratoga Springs Police Department, and the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control.
The Saratoga Springs Fire Department was assisted by numerous agencies including the Saratoga County Emergency Communications Center, Saratoga County Office of Emergency Services Fire Coordinator staff, Ballston Spa Fire Department, Malta Ridge Fire Department, Quaker Springs Fire Department, Saratoga Springs Police Department, and National Grid.
No humans were injured in the fire.

Local Author Releases “The Summer Place to Be,” Proceeds Benefiting Therapeutic Horses of Saratoga
Local author, Melissa Trombetta, released a romance novel titled “The Summer Place to Be” inspired by Saratoga Springs. A portion of proceeds from each book sold will benefit Therapeutic Horses of Saratoga (THS).
“Experiencing equine therapy firsthand deepened my understanding of what healing can really look like and transformed the way I wrote the protagonist’s journey, while also teaching me things about myself that I’ll carry with me for the rest of my life. I’m incredibly grateful for the work
THS does in this community, and it’s an honor to support them,” said Trombetta.

Goodwill Store & Donation Center Coming Soon to Clifton Park
A new full-service Goodwill Store & Donation Center is opening at 19 Clifton Country Road, Clifton Park, with a projected opening date of mid-July 2026.
The new 6,000 sq.-ft. store will offer a large selection of pre-loved and new women’s, men’s, and kids’ clothing. This is the first Goodwill coming to Saratoga County, bringing shoppers access to quality
goods at affordable prices while keeping usable items out of local landfills.

OFF Menu: A Seasonal Chef-led Tasting Dinner
Standard Fare is introducing OFF MENU, a new chefled tasting experience hosted by Chef Joseph Michaud. The intimate dining series will take place on select Sunday evenings and feature a seasonal five-course tasting menu personally crafted and presented by Chef Michaud.
Guests will enjoy an upclose look into the creative process behind the cuisine, as Chef Michaud guides diners through each course, discussing ingredients, techniques, and the inspiration behind the menu.
The inaugural OFF MENU dates are June 28, July 12, and July 26; all dinners begin at 6:30 p.m.

National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame to Celebrate 50 Years of the Museum Ball
The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame will celebrate its 50th annual Museum Ball this summer on Friday, Aug. 7. This esteemed black-tie gala has been held continuously since 1977 and remains the Museum’s largest fundraising event and one of the most prestigious social affairs of the Saratoga racing season.
The Museum Ball is attended by Hall of Fame members, thoroughbred racing and community leaders, and Museum trustees. More than 400 attendees are expected for this distinctive event, which maintains its attire standards as the only back-tie event of the Saratoga summer season.
The Museum Ball provides important funding for exhibits, educational initiatives, and the Hall of Fame, all of which are vital
to the Museum’s mission of preserving and promoting the history of thoroughbred racing in America and honoring the sport’s most accomplished participants.
“Saratoga tradition, which brings together so many thoroughbred racing people and their guests in one of the loveliest settings in this historic city, epitomizes what thoroughbred racing is all about,” former Museum chair Whitney Tower said of the Museum Ball in 1985. “For here, in a setting unequaled in its grace and beauty, is gathered a wonderful cross-section of American and international racing figures dedicated to true sportsmanship.”

The United States Postal Service Announces Capital Region Job Fairs
The United States Postal Servies (USPS) is currently holding job fairs around Saratoga County. The organization is looking to hire city carrier PTF employees at $26.28 per hour, rural carrier associates at $21.89 per hour and city carrier assistants at $21.21 per hour.
The upcoming events are as follows; June 23 at Albany General Mail Facility located at 30 Karner Road from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Applicants should use the employee entrance.
June 25 at the Halfmoon Post Office located at 245 Washington Street, Clifton Park from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Saratoga Chapter Daughters Of The American Revolution Holds Us Flag Essay Contest
In commemoration of Flay Day and Our Nation’s 250th Anniversary, the Saratoga Chapter DAR held a US Flag Essay Contest. Elementary School students were asked to write an essay on What the Flag Means to Me. More than fifty essays were received from fifth grade students from Lake Avenue and Caroline Street Schools. The top three winners were awarded a certificate, flag and monetary award from the Chapter.

Free Summer Meals Available Through the District Food Truck
The Saratoga Springs City School District will offer free summer meals for all students throughout the summer. From June 29 through August 28, students can enjoy meals at no cost.
The Food Truck will make the following stops each weekday:

• West Side Rec Park

The Children’s Museum at Saratoga Announces Transformational $750,000 Gift to Support Expansion
The Children’s Museum at Saratoga (CMAS) today announced a $750,000 gift from the Esler Family––the largest in the organization’s history — as part of its ongoing $1.3 million capital campaign. With this commitment, the Museum has now raised $1,050,000 toward its goal, supporting the creation of the new Esler Family Room and enhancements that will strengthen the Museum’s ability to serve children, families, educators, and community partners throughout the region.
Since relocating to the historic Lincoln Baths in 2021, the Museum has experienced significant growth, continually expanding exhibits and programming to meet community demand. Recent enhancements include the transformation of the lobby into an interactive train station and the addition of a universally accessible playground and outdoor learning space, all designed to create engaging experiences for children of all abilities.
The campaign will support the creation of the Esler Family Room,
an Adirondack-inspired immersive environment that reflects a spirit of exploration and connection to the outdoors. The project will also allow the Museum to reconfigure existing space to better support its growing team and operational needs. Over the past five years, CMAS has expanded from five to eighteen staff members, reflecting increased visitation, programming, and community engagement.
Designed as an interactive educational environment, the Esler Family Room will support field trip experiences, hands-on learning activities, and Museum programming. The space will also provide a welcoming area for visiting school groups to enjoy lunch during their visit, helping ensure that children remain immersed in the Museum experience throughout their day.

• 1 medium onion*, diced
• 3 carrots*, diced
• 3 ribs celery*, diced
• 3 tablespoons butter
• 2 Tablespoons flour
• 1 ½ cups milk*, chicken broth or vegetable broth
• 2-3 sprigs marjoram or thyme*
• ¼ cup chopped parsley*
• Salt and pepper to taste
• Buttermilk biscuits, from scratch or from the market
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Heat 1 tablespoon of butter in saucepan or skillet and sauté the vegetables until soft, 5-7 minutes. Remove from pan and set aside.
2. Heat 2 tablespoon of butter in saucepan on medium heat and whisk in the flour. Heat until mixture bubbles and gradually add in the broth or milk, whisking steadily. Cook about 10 minutes until the sauce thickens. Add the sautéed vegetables, potato, chicken, marjoram or thyme, and salt and pepper. Simmer until heated through, stirring occasionally, about 5-7 minutes.
3. Cut open the biscuits and top with the chicken sauce. Garnish with parsley and enjoy!

This weekend is Father’s Day. Not sure what to get dad?
A home cooked meal with some of their favorite foods is a great way to kick things off. How about cooking something special for him? Many of us have been lucky enough to grow up with dads who love to cook, who have mastered crème brûlée or grilling or taught us to make perfect rice. Others have dads who just love to eat, who will dig into a shared plate happily and are always ready to share a meal. This Sunday, we’ll honor all of them, maybe with pancakes or a special dinner or a thoughtful food-related gift. In preparing that special meal, there may be some cool culinary tools you need to help.
As I reflect on Father’s Day, I realize that the most important part of being a father is being in my children’s
lives, to show them my love and to support their dreams and aspirations. I always knew I wanted to be a father and consider fatherhood my greatest achievement. Once I was asked, “do you miss your children being young?” My response was that I truly have enjoyed and continue to enjoy every stage of my children’s lives. I consider being a father a privilege with the gift of loving and teaching them through every part of their lives watching them change and mature. My children fill me with the important parts of overwhelming pride and joy I have for them. Being a father to them has given me the greatest gift in being their protector, caregiver, and mentor.

Perfect Buttermilk Pancakes
INGREDIENTS
• 2 cups all-purpose flour
• 3 tablespoons sugar
• 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
• 1 ½ teaspoons baking soda
• 1 ¼ teaspoons kosher salt
• 2 ½ cups buttermilk
• 2 large eggs
INSTRUCTIONS
•Heat the oven to 325 degrees.
• 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
• Vegetable, canola or coconut oil for the pan
•Whisk flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and kosher salt together in a bowl. Using the whisk, make a well in the center.
•Pour the buttermilk into the well and crack eggs into buttermilk. Pour the melted butter into the mixture.
•Starting in the center, whisk everything together, moving towards the outside of the bowl, until all ingredients are incorporated. Do not overbeat (lumps are fine). The batter can be refrigerated for up to one hour.
•Heat a large nonstick griddle or skillet preferably cast-iron, over low heat for about 5 minutes. Add 1 tablespoon oil to the skillet. Turn heat up to medium–low and using a measuring cup, ladle 1/3 cup batter into the skillet. If you are using a large skillet or a griddle, repeat once or twice, taking care not to crowd the cooking surface.
•Flip pancakes after bubbles rise to surface and bottoms brown, about 2 to 4 minutes. Cook until the other sides are lightly browned. Remove pancakes to a wire rack set inside a rimmed baking sheet, and keep in heated oven until all the batter is cooked and you are ready to serve.

Skidmore College Announces 2026 Stewart’s Signature Series Event Lineup
The 2026 Stewart’s Signature Series released its list of summer events open to the public this June and July. The summer series, organized yearly by Skidmore College’s Office of Special Programs and supported through a grant from Stewart’s Shops and the Dake Family, celebrates community through music, readings, and discussion by acclaimed artists and scholars.
“Saratoga Springs is blessed with a wide array of live, interactive entertainment. We are proud to support the Stewart’s Signature Series, which brings exceptional performers and educators to our community while reinforcing Skidmore’s role as a cultural hub for all,” said Susan Law Dake, president of Stewart’s Foundation and member of Skidmore’s Board of Trustees.
The first event on Monday, June 29, at 8 p.m. in the Davis auditorium features writers Hannah Assadi and Honor Moore. Assadi’s most recent novel, “Paradiso 17,” inspired by the life of her late Palestinian father, received a glowing review from The New York Times. Moore’s latest book, “A Termination,” a lyric memoir about her decision to have an abortion, was named one of the Best Books of 2025 by Publishers Weekly.

Film Screening at Saratoga Public Library
Connie Hochman is holding a screening of her new film, “In Balanchine’s Classroom,” in the Dutcher community room at the Saratoga Public Library on Wednesday, July 1 at 6 p.m. George Balanchine was one of the most influential ballet choreographers of the 20th century. His “Midsummer Night’s Dream” was performed during NYC Ballet’s SPAC debut in 1966.
Hochman was a professional ballet dancer with the Philadelphia Ballet where she performed many of Balanchine’s masterworks. In 2007, Connie began a series of in-depth interviews with former Balanchine dancers to explore the phenomenon of Balanchine’s classroom. Pearl and the Oysters to Perform at Saratoga Arts

Parisian indie-pop group Pearl and the Oysters are coming to Saratoga Arts on July 23. They will be joined by projectionist Derick Noetzel, who will bring a vibrant and immersive atmosphere to Saratoga Arts’ black box theater.
Prior to the show, Pint Sized will host a pop-up bar serving beer, wine and spirits in the gallery which will preview Saratoga Arts new 10 X 10

The 57th Saratoga Flag Day Parade

People of all ages gathered down Broadway despite the heat for Saratoga-Wilton Elks Lodge Annual Flag Day Parade on Saturday, June 13. The parade featured coalitions of local organizations parading from North Broadway to Congress Park.
There was an extra scent of patriotism in the air in celebration of America’s semiquincentennial anniversary. Floats, buses and outfits were decked out for the special year, although Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the American Flag in 1777. More importantly it was a day celebrating local community.
Local high school ensembles were marching down Broadway performing “The Star-Spangled Banner” and “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.”
Uncle Sam was seen downtown, along with sailors from the Navy, and even llamas were in attendance.
Back in January there were concerns that there would not be funding for this year’s parade. Local officials came together with SaratogaWilton Elks Lodge to make the tradition happen, marking the 57th annual Flag Day parade in Saratoga.

Perfectly Guided: Mother Shares 23-Year Journey of Advocacy, Miracles and Resilience

Local resident Donna Giffune is a physical therapist, a registered nurse, and a teacher. But these are just hats she wears, her vocation is supporting and advocating for her son, Ben. Perfectly Guided…How Saving Ben Turned into Saving Me is a memoir by a loving mother 23 years in the making.
Giffune first attended Russel Sage College in 1983 where she studied to become a physical therapist. Three years after Giffune graduated, she welcomed Ben into the world.
Early in Ben’s life, Giffune noticed abnormalities in Ben’s development. But when she brought her concerns up to her family physician, he told her: “You are a concerned mother who happens to be a physical therapist.”
She went to Albany Medical Center where she met a doctor who said to her three words she will never forget: “I believe you.” On September 11th, 1992, Ben
had a CT scan on his brain which revealed a large tumor.
Doctors were able to completely remove the tumor; which left Ben with permanent learning disabilities. “I wasn’t fazed by it, I evolved through him,” said Giffune.
Ben’s surgery at Albany Medical Center left his mother with a $150,000-dollar medical bill. Her insurance would not cover it, but Giffune never paid a dime on her son’s life-saving surgery.
Her sister worked as a stewardess at US Airlines in Albany, “She must have mentioned it at work,” said Giffune. “When I called Albany Medical Center a few weeks later, the balance was paid off. I never saw the bill. To this day I don’t know who paid for Ben’s medical bills.”
Giffune went back to college to earn her teaching degree in 2007. She introduced brain-based learning to her son, a technique that emphasizes problem solving. “Ben’s my teacher and I’m the student,” said Giffune.
Inspired by his mother, Ben
decided he wanted to earn a college degree of his own.
Through a partnership with Saratoga Bridges and Skidmore College, Ben was able to attend a modified class load to achieve a certificate of learning. He walked the stage at Skidmore College graduation in 2010.
As fate would have it, Ben would not be through the woods of his health complications. In 2016, Ben suffered a stroke, from which he was able to make a full recovery. After, Giffune felt inspired to attend nursing school to better understand her son’s health.
Today Ben is working at a local Market 32, a job he has held for 19 years and lives in an apartment with 3 other roommates.
“I was perfectly guided all the way,” said Giffune. “You come out the other side with gratitude.”

State Champions… Again!

Spa Catholic Baseball are repeat Class C State Champions despite graduating five seniors last year. This year, seven seniors leave their legacy at Saratoga Central Catholic.
The championship weekend started early for the team. The boys left school early on Thursday, cheered on by their classmates and families as they boarded their bus to Binghamton.
Their bus was escorted by Saratoga police and fire department from Broadway down Route 9 as they looked forward to their semi-final clash on Friday, June 12, against Tuckahoe High School.
“It looked bleak going into the last inning” said Coach Alphonse Lambert.
With the Saints down 3-2, Junior Sandy McDonald managed to earn a walk off the Tuckahoe star pitcher, Connor Brice. This caused Brice to reach his 125-pitch limit, leading to relief pitcher Kyle Carney taking the mound.
Spa Catholic batters rattled in 3 runs in the top of the seventh to earn their first lead of the night. Central Catholic shut out Tuckahoe High batters in the bottom of the seventh inning to punch their ticket to a second consecutive spot in the Class C State Championship game.
The State Championship game was Saturday, June 13, against Kendall High School. Siena commit, Pierce Bryne,
had a dominant pitching performance, only allowing 1 run.
Runs from Joey Linder, Kehil Kelly, Martin Ellie and Zach Streicher secured back-to-back State Championships for Saratoga Central Catholic.

Galway softball made it to the New York State High
School Athletic Association (NYSHSAA) championship game on Saturday, June 13. The team ultimately fell short in the penultimate game. Take nothing away from this historic season; this was Galway’s first appearance in a state final ever.
The Golden Eagles were one run short of securing the state title, losing 4-3 to Deposit-Hancock.
Saratoga Springs Softball won their second section 2 class AAA title in three years this year. They beat Cicero-North Syracuse in the regional round but fell short to Lancaster 4-3 in the semifinal game.

Ballston Spa Soccer Club 2009 Girls team won the Richard Christiano Cup, their third straight state championship on Thursday, June 11.
“We are a volunteer organization of girls from the community,” explained Ballston Spa coach Andrew Werner, Eastern New York’s 2020 Girls Competitive Coach of the Year. “I’m blessed to have such good parents that have stayed true to our program and what we’re doing.”
Ballston Spa also won the North Atlantic Premier
Division title this spring, overcoming four serious injuries to their players. They started as a Girls-Under-8 team in the Capital District Youth Soccer League (CDYSL), then played in the Eastern Development Program (EDP) when they were Girls-Under-12.
Ballston Spa will represent the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) when they play at Nationals from July 13 to 20 in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
Coach Werner added, “To
prepare, we’re playing in the Mad Dog College Showcase in Saratoga Springs and will also play boy’s teams in friendlies.”
Richard Christiano, the cup’s namesake, has brought fiscal responsibility to ENYYSA as President for the past 17 years. He also was a youth coach for the New Hyde Park Wildcats and served on the Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) Board of Directors for 14 years, greatly improving the LIJSL Select Program during this time.

A Field of Honor
Alliance180, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting Veterans, first responders, and frontline health care workers on their journey toward post-traumatic growth hosted its inaugural Field of Honor on Flay Day, June 14.

250 United States flags, a powerful patriotic display honoring the men and women who have shaped the nation
Each flag in the display included a personal dedication tag, sharing the story of a veteran, first responder, loved
one, or hero being honored. The flags will remain in the field until the 21st, when the flag and dedication tag will be returned to the individual or organization who sponsored it as a lasting keepsake.

exhibit featured a life-sized Declaration of Independence banner, accompanied by historic American flags representing the 26 flags flown over the United States during the past 250 years.
It was a solemn day of
reflection, remembrance, and gratitude to those who sacrificed for our freedom. Throughout the week, the field of red, white, and blue will serve as a visible reminder of the values the American flag represents, unity, resilience, and hope.
