Tedisco Honors Galway High School Student with New York State’s Highest Award for Young People

Senator Jim Tedisco (R,CBallston Lake) recently honored Andrew Miller, a junior at Galway High School with the New York State Senate Youth Leadership Award.

The NYS Senate Youth Leadership Award is given to students from across the state who have shown academic excellence, leadership and community outreach in going above and beyond in their school activities. Miller was nominated for the award by Galway High School Business Teacher Kathryn Pellett.

Miller is the treasurer of Galway High School’s Business Club, a role typically reserved for high school seniors. As club treasurer, Miller has increased sales through the club’s school store with innovative ideas that have made the school store the most successful it has been in years.

Andrew also is completing a business pathway for an additional

certification on his high school diploma. This includes taking four college level business courses, an independent study, and a 54-hour internship program.

“Andrew Miller is clearly an exceptional young person who excels in his studies and extracurricular activities as a true leader among his peers at Galway High School by going above and beyond in all he does. As a former educator, I am proud to recognize outstanding young people like Andrew Miller and present him with the New York State Senate’s Youth Leadership Award, our highest award for young people,” said Senator Jim Tedisco, a former special education teacher and current Ranking Member of the NYS Senate Education Committee.

Helen Elizabeth (Janes) Patti

June 12, 1932 - March 2, 2026

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY

- Helen (Janes) Patti, age 93, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by love, on March 2, 2026, in Saratoga Springs, NY. Though dementia touched her later years, her warmth, gratitude, and gentle spirit never faded.

Born June 12, 1932, in Woburn Sands, England, she was the daughter of David and Muriel (Gilby) Janes. She graduated from Totley Hall Training College of Housecraft and taught in England before continuing her career in Montreal and Vancouver, where she also studied computer programming.

While visiting Lake George, Helen met her husband, Jerry Patti, and they married in 1968. Helen worked in the Registrar’s office at Skidmore College for almost 30 years and earned her bachelor’s degree there in 1977.

Forever the athlete, she continued hiking, biking,

dancing, skiing, sailing, kayaking, tennis, and brisk daily walks. Helen was also a magician: “Magic Patti,” delighting audiences with humor and charm and teaching the art of magic to children for decades. She was devoted to English Country Dance and continued dancing into her 90s.

In her final years, Helen was cared for by a devoted group known as “Team Helen.” She was predeceased by her husband, parents, and brothers, and is remembered by dear friends and family.

A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, April 19 from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. at Burke’s Funeral Home in Saratoga Springs. Helen’s magician family will honor her with a traditional “Broken Wand Ceremony” beginning at 1:00 p.m.

Helen’s wishes were to be cremated, with a portion of her ashes scattered among the islands of Lake George, reuniting with her husband, while the remainder will be interred with her parents in England.

Barton Hugh Klion

- Barton Hugh Klion died peacefully in his sleep on April 7, 2026; he was born March 28, 1928, in Manhattan. He celebrated his 98th birthday with his children, daughter-in-law, and devoted granddaughter. Bart was fiercely independent, and he was still driving and only using a cane until recently. He was looking forward to his Academy for Lifelong Learning “international relations” discussion group and had just found a new chess partner with whom he played at a local coffee shop. He had a 518-day streak on Chess.com, where he played every day with one of his grandsons and others. A lifelong athlete, he skied until he was 82 and played tennis until he was 89.

After graduating from Rutgers University in 1948 and serving as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army (1948 - 1949), he began a successful career as a wallcovering sales and marketing executive, leading sales teams in metro NYC, while managing national accounts throughout the United States and Canada. Married to Barbara in 1955, Bruce and Lisa were born shortly after, and they moved to Hartsdale, NY, in 1960, where they remained until 2018, when they moved to Saratoga County. Bart and Barbara’s passion was travel, both in the U.S. and internationally, mostly on walking tours. The places and countries are too long to list but think of the song “Let’s Go Everywhere.”

Bart will mostly be remembered for his commitment to friends and family. Bruce and Lisa grew up with a slew of “Uncles,” some from the Manhattan neighborhood where he grew up, some from his years at

Rutgers, where Bart was the president of the Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity chapter. He was an Ardsley Little League coach and a co-founder of the local touch-and-flag football program, as well as “Lassie League” softball. He taught his children to ski in New York, Vermont, Massachusetts, and Quebec, and to play tennis at the local swimming and tennis club. He regularly attended his grandchildren’s school and youth sports activities, even though they were not local, with one grandson noting, “I don’t recall any other grandparents watching their grandchildren play outdoor division 5 soccer in all weather.”

Other than seeing his two great-grandsons this spring, Bart was most looking forward to the annual Rutgers Living History Society meeting; RLHS and Rutgers Oral History Archive (now part of the Rutgers University History Department), gave him much meaning and purpose over the last 32 years, not just the absolute value of this worthy project, but the people he had met, interacted and formed relationships with. He served on the original operations committee, was President of RLHS for seven years, and remained active in the organization until last week. Bart entered Rutgers during WWII as a 16-year-old in 1944, and virtually all of his friends and fraternity brothers were returning combat veterans (as was his brother Stanley, RU class of 1942). Much of his devotion to ROHA was born of these relationships. Bart loved Rutgers University and was the true definition of a “loyal son.”

Samara Wald of Providence (his “favorite” granddaughter). Bart was and will continue to be a role model of a life well lived, dedicated to friends and family. Sonya Gail Isolda

CORINTH, NY- Sonya Gail Isolda passed away quietly on March 22, 2026, at Washington Ctr. Argyle, NY. Born June 23, 1935, in Saratoga Springs NY, Sonya graduated from Saratoga Springs High School class of 1953. She worked for the Schenectady library system before retiring. In her later years she enjoyed embroidery and scrapbooking. She is survived by her daughter Nikki Zwijacz of Henderson, CO and her son Marc Zwijacz of Wilton, NY. Sonya had a total of three granddaughters and one grandson, plus a younger brother, Kelly Isolda. She also had a good number of nieces and nephews.

Cambridge Man Arrested for Attempting to Rob a Bank

A Cambridge man has been arrested after he allegedly tried to rob a Bank of America on Division Street.

Eric Headwell, 61, of Cambridge was charged with felony 3rd degree attempted robbery. The incident occurred on the evening of April 9. According to the Saratoga Springs Police Department, officers were at the bank within two minutes of

being dispatched and located Headwell shortly after.

Headwell is accused of trying to rob the bank, although he displayed no weapon and left the bank without any funds. Officers quickly located an individual entering a business on Broadway who matched a description given to them by bank employees. The individual, identified as Headwell, was interviewed by police and charged.

Headwell was booked and released on an appearance ticket pending further proceedings.

Saratoga County Seeks Volunteers To Deliver Meals To Homebound Seniors In Greater Greenfield Area

The Saratoga County Department of Aging and Youth Services is seeking volunteers to deliver meals to homebound seniors who live in the greater Greenfield area. The department has an immediate need for volunteers who can pick up meals at Galway Town Hall and deliver to residents in the Town of Greenfield and surrounding area.

This essential program helps many seniors, age 60 and older, remain independent in their homes by providing them with a nutritious ready-to-eat lunch each weekday.

Volunteers can choose a flexible schedule that meets their

availability, volunteering as little as once a week or as much as five days a week. Meals are picked up at 11AM and delivered until 1PM each weekday.

Becoming a volunteer is easy. Individuals simply fill out an application and provide references to the Saratoga County Department of Aging and Youth Services. Training and orientation are provided to all volunteers. Volunteers must have a valid driver’s license and their own vehicle.

Those interested in becoming a meal delivery volunteer should call the Saratoga County Department of Aging and Youth Services at 518-363-4020.

Juniper is a petite kitty who is a little over a year and half old. Her family made the very difficult decision to surrender her after realizing they could not properly provide for her while going through a difficult time. She may need some time to acclimate to new surroundings,

but she is very sweet and receptive to pets and attention. She was recently spayed, is up to date on her rabies vaccine and has had her first distemper vaccination. She has tested negative for FIV and FeLV. Juniper is ready to find a loving home with people who will provide her with the

Saratoga County District Attorney Announces Guilty Plea and Sentencing in Sexual Abuse Case

Saratoga County District Attorney Brett Eby announced today that Stephen Bottino has pled guilty to Sexual Abuse in the First Degree (PL 130.65(3)), the sole felony charge for which he was arrested.

As part of the proceedings, the prosecution advocated for

a state prison sentence in light of the seriousness of the offense and the impact on the victim. Despite that recommendation, the Court sentenced the defendant to one year in the Saratoga County Jail over the objection of the prosecution.

District Attorney Eby

issued the following statement:

“While we respect the authority and discretion of the Court in sentencing matters, we are disappointed in the outcome of this case. Our office fought for the victim and believed that a state prison sentence was an appropriate

and just result given the nature of the crime. We remain committed to advocating for victims and ensuring their voices are heard throughout the judicial process.”

The prosecution was led by Senior Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Pratt.

The investigation was conducted by Investigator Samuel Speziale of the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office. The Saratoga County District Attorney’s Office extends its appreciation to law enforcement and all those who assisted in bringing this case forward.

Murder in the Spa City: One Dead after West Ave Fight

Saratoga 250 Presents The 5TH Annual Turning Point Symposium & Bus Tour

One man is dead, and another has been charged with murder after a fight in Saratoga Springs.

John C. “Clay” Williamson Jr., 44, died on the morning of Tuesday, April 14, after a fight on West Ave near Station Lane. Saratoga Springs Police say the call came in around 7:30, and officers were on scene within two minutes of being dispatched.

Police found Williamson going in and out of consciousness and bleeding from several stab wounds. He was transported to Saratoga Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police said he had been living in a wooded area near where the incident took place.

During the initial investigation, West Ave was closed between Church Street and Washington Street. SSPD said that witnesses called 911 quickly, allowing officers to identify and locate others involved in the incident who cooperated with the investigation.

Another homeless man, Kyle D. Baker, 52, was arrested following the incident and charged with 2nd degree murder. Police allege that Baker stabbed Williamson to death during the fight. Baker was arraigned in the Saratoga City Court and remanded to the custody of the Saratoga County Correctional Facility without bail. As of the time of publication, he is set to appear in court on April 16 at 9:45 a.m.

While Baker has ties to Corinth, he had been living in a wooded area on West Ave at the time of the incident, according to SSPD.

This is not Baker’s first time being arrested in Saratoga County. In June 2020, he was arrested by the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office after he fired a gun at residences on Hollow Road in the Town of Day as he drove by. A press release issued at the time of the arrest said the homes were occupied. At the time of that incident, he was listed as living in Warrensburg.

In 2021, Baker pleaded guilty to a 2nd-degree felony attempted criminal mischief. He began his sentence in April 2022 and

spent nearly a year at the Marcy Correctional Facility before being paroled in March 2023. His parole expired in April 2024, according to records from the New York Department of Corrections and Community Supervision. Baker’s only other felony conviction came in 2012, when he pleaded guilty to Grand Larceny in Warren County Court, according to court records.

The investigation into the alleged murder is ongoing.

SSPD has requested that anyone who may have witnessed or recorded the incident contact them at (518) 584-8477 (TIPS) or by e-mail at tips@saratogapolice.org. Specific areas of interest to police include the Stewart’s Shop at 87 West Avenue, Station Lane, the American Legion

at 34 West Avenue, and West Avenue between Station Lane and Washington Street.

The Saratoga Springs Police were aided by the New York State Police in securing the crime scene and interviewing witnesses, and the investigation is being done in coordination with the Saratoga County District Attorney’s Office.

Homicides aren’t common in Saratoga Springs or Saratoga County. In 2024, only three homicides occurred countywide, according to state data. The last reported homicide in Saratoga Springs occurred in April 2025 after an individual accidentally killed his roommate with a pellet gun. It was the only reported homicide handled by the SSPD, according to their annual report.

The Saratoga County 250th Commission announced tickets are on sale for the 5th Annual Turning Point Symposium. The event is May 2nd from 8:15AM to 3:30PM at the Old Saratoga American Legion Post, 6 Clancy St. in Schuylerville, NY. Additionally, a guided bus tour following the route of a British Raid on Ballston in October 1780 is offered on May 3rd from 10AM to 2PM.

General registration for the symposium is $75 and includes a light breakfast and deli lunch. The guided bus tour is $75 and includes a box lunch. Those interested can register for these events at Saratoga250.com.

Lauren Roberts, Saratoga County Historian and Chair of the Saratoga County 250th Commission said, “As the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence approaches, we turn our attention to the ideas and actions of those who took part in the creation of this country. Symposiums like these remind us of how much we still have to learn from the people and events that took place two and a half centuries ago, and why their stories still matter today.”

Formerly known as the Women in War Symposium, the event features notable Revolutionary War era historians

and authors presenting new scholarship to enhance our understanding of the War for American Independence. This year, the topics focus on the upstate New York area and the impact felt by both combatants and residents throughout the war. Additionally, the event will include exhibitor displays, books, and cutting-edge augmented reality demonstrations.

Emceed by historian and author Dr. Bruce Venter, the symposium will feature five speakers with several presenters focusing on the varied roles women played in the American Revolution. Turning Point Symposium attendees will hear unfamiliar stories of loyalists and patriots, learn about the challenges (and opportunities) residents faced and discover how they navigated a very personalized and bloody conflict. An optional walking tour led by Town of Saratoga Historian Sean Kelleher explores the Schuyler Legacy concludes the day.

On Sunday May 3rd the weekend continues with the British Raid on Ballston Bus Tour, led by local historian Jim Richmond whose book War on the Middeline describes the settlement of Middeline Road in Ballston in the years leading up to the Revolution. The four-hour tour will include stops along the Sacandaga Reservoir and lunch at the Middle Grove Town Park.

Owl Pen Books Reopens for 66th Season

GREENWICH —

Regarded as the oldest bookstore in the Capital Region, Owl Pen Books in Greenwich will reopen for its 66th season on Saturday, April 25 at 11 a.m.

The opening date coincides with Independent Bookstore Day. Book and music lovers are encouraged to shop the inventory of nearly 100,000 used, rare, and antiquarian books, prints, and ephemera, as well as used LPs, CDs, and cassettes.

The book farm will host a number of events this season, including a multi-vendor vinyl record fair and the return of Hubbard Hall’s annual Shakespeare in the Park.

Originally opened in an old hog pen in 1960 by Barbara Probst, Owl Pen has since expanded into a large former chicken coop and welcomed tens of thousands of visitors to its unlikely location “on a back road off a back road.” In 1945, Probst stumbled on the then-abandoned property and decided to

devote her life to restoring it.

Current owners Eric Kufs and Sydney Nichols stumbled on the property for sale online in 2021 and purchased the bookstore and surrounding acres in 2022.

Owl Pen’s 66th season will run from April 25 through Nov. 1, Wednesdays through Sundays, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Behind the Scenes of a Saratoga Cannabis Dispensary

— ‘Twas the week before 4/20, when all through the dispensary, budtenders were stirring, conducting an audit.

Although popular culture often depicts cannabis enthusiasts as lackadaisical, at the Silver Cannabis dispensary in Saratoga Springs, products are meticulously tagged, tested, and tracked. The business is subject to multiple, random state inspections each year and must always be prepared.

Silver—which has nine locations scattered across New York, Massachusetts, Maine, and Vermont—has its regional managers conduct internal audits, which can serve as practice runs for state inspections. Individual stores also have their staffers perform daily categorical audits. On April 15, one Saratoga budtender was auditing the store’s supply of edibles to ensure that the physical inventory matches the information that’s in both the store’s system and the state’s tracking system.

“Compliance and regulations can be a good thing,” Jacob LeLievre, general manager of the Spa City pot shop, told Saratoga TODAY.

“Everything that we have in there is tested for pesticides. It’s tested for potency. It’s tested for residual chemicals that could come in contact with it during the process. Everything is completely clean and safe to be sold, versus something that you may choose to purchase elsewhere. You wouldn’t necessarily know where it came from or if it was completely safe to consume. I can stand by knowing that our products are safe, and that we can make the best suggestion to anyone who comes in.”

In July 2024, Silver became the first recreational dispensary to open its doors in Saratoga Springs. Since then, it’s had to redesign its space to accommodate a steady flow of customers. It also recently expanded its vault to accommodate more inventory. The physical

changes are evidence of what might be obvious to anyone who drives past Silver in Saratoga or Sashies in Ballston Spa: the local cannabis business is booming.

“We never knew what to expect when we first opened, and we ended up opening up to a ton of people welcoming us into the community,” LeLievre said. “I think we exceeded expectations.”

According to New York State Cannabis Control Board data published earlier this month, dispensaries that have been open for a year are averaging about $4 million in annual sales. Top retailers can yield closer to $6 million annually, with the less profitable shops bringing in about $1.2 million. “New York’s cannabis market demonstrates resilience; most respondents are operational, adapting, and confident in their own business outlook amid broader market challenges,” states the control board’s report.

In 2025, the legal cannabis market in New York surpassed $2.5 billion in sales, according to the state’s Office of Cannabis Management. Also that year, the number of shops statewide increased from 261 to 556.

One thing that seems to be driving business, at Silver’s Saratoga location at least, is the desire for a good night’s sleep.

“A lot of people are looking for sleep options,” LeLievre said. “I’d say my favorite thing to help someone with is sleep. When someone comes in and they’re struggling to go to bed at night; that’s a fundamental

part of being who you are, being able to get a good rest and get out the next day. Many people come back to get the same product again, just because they find that it works so well.” (LeLievre has a mantra for those seeking sleep aids: start low and go slow. In other words, start with a small dosage and test out various options, trial-and-error style.)

Of course, this time of year is decidedly not a sleepy one for dispensaries. April 20 (or, 4/20), considered a “high holiday” for cannabis users, is one of Silver’s busiest days of the year, up there with more traditional holidays like Christmas and local happenings like the Belmont Stakes.

“I would say the preparation for 4/20 usually starts in May because it takes a ton of time to get ready for,” LeLievre said.

Silver’s 4/20 celebrations this year include various educational opportunities where customers can learn more about products directly from vendors, and a lobster food truck from noon to 6 p.m. Those who are already fans of cannabis products are obviously welcome, but so too are those who might be skeptical of the recent legalization and proliferation of the industry across Upstate New York.

“Just come in and see us,” LeLievre said. “We can reassure you with our smiling faces and with our guidance that we’re here to help you with whatever it is that you may need help with when it comes to the cannabis realm, even if you’re nervous to step in.”

Evolve Today Events, founded by event curator and paranormal creative Shelley Pettit, will present “Haunted in New York: A Curated Paranormal and Metaphysical Experience” on Saturday, Aug. 15 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Saratoga City Center.

Saratoga County History Center Releases New

The Saratoga County History Center at Brookside Museum has released the fourth film in its documentary series focused on Saratoga County communities, entitled The Town of Greenfield: A Forgotten Crossroads. Earlier films in the Forgotten Crossroads series explored the communities of Rock City Falls, Bacon Hill, and Vischer Ferry.

“By focusing on the entire Town of Greenfield, the History Center has taken on an ambitious project,” said film director Jim Richmond. This film is meant to display the diversity of history, memories and aspirations that make Greenfield a special place to

live, and centers around conversations with twenty local residents ranging in age from 13 to 90.

“The common theme of the film is their joy, which comes across in the film,” added Richmond. Greenfield is the largest town in Saratoga County, extending from the outskirts of Saratoga Springs to the foothills of the Adirondacks. Native Americans were familiar with this land long before settlers from New England arrived soon after the Revolution.

“Settlements sprung up along the Kayaderosseras Creek,” said Town Historian Duane Cornell.

Glotzbach, who served as president of Skidmore College for 17 years, is the author of “Embrace Your Freedom: Winning Strategies to Succeed in College and Life.” Grown and Flown, a blog for parents with college-bound children, just spotlighted it as one the “Top 20 Books” to give a graduating high school senior.

Drawing on decades of leadership in higher education, Glotzbach offers clear, practical advice on how students can make the most of their college years, emphasizing resilience, balance, responsible decision-making, and learning from failure.

The conversation comes at a moment of growing uncertainty about the future of work. Today’s college graduates are entering a challenging job market, while rapid advances in artificial intelligence are raising new questions about which skills which profession will endure. Against that backdrop, Glotzbach offers a perspective grounded

in experience and focused on long-term development.

In Embrace Your Freedom, he challenges what he calls the “ATM model” of college, an increasingly common view of higher education as a transactional exchange in which tuition is paid and a credential received. While understandable in an era of rising costs and economic pressure, he argues that this approach risks missing the deeper purpose of college: not simply what students gain, but who they become. That idea will anchor the April discussion. Families today are navigating a landscape shaped by economic anxiety, rising expectations, and the accelerating presence of technologies that can both empower and displace. At the same time, young people are being asked to define themselves in a world where the pathways to adulthood are less stable and less clearly defined than in previous generations.

Glotzbach’s perspective avoids both nostalgia and alarmism. Rather than calling for a return to the past or deferring to technology as destiny, he emphasizes a more demanding understanding of freedom as “the capacity to do something meaningful.” That capacity, he argues, is developed through discipline, relationships, and a willingness to engage complexity.

At its core, the evening returns to one of Glotzbach’s central insights: that the college years represent a rare opportunity for self-discovery. It is a time when students can “test drive” the adults they are becoming, supported by a community that encourages growth while allowing room for missteps.

Comfort Food Community Launches Grow 2 Give: A Hands-On Volunteer Program Rooted

Comfort Food Community (CFC) is launching Grow 2 Give, a new, innovative program designed to expand access to fresh, nutritious produce through a cost-efficient, community-powered approach. Grow 2 Give will help to increase fresh food access across Washington, Warren, and Saratoga Counties by growing food from seed on donated land with the support of volunteers and funding from the Church of

Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

All produce harvested through Grow 2 Give will be distributed through CFC’s food access programs, directly supporting individuals and families experiencing food insecurity.

Saratoga Springs City School District to Host Drive-a-Bus Event on May 2

The Saratoga Springs City School District invites community members to attend a Drivea-Bus Event on Saturday, May 2, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Maple Avenue Middle School. This free, family-friendly event offers a unique opportunity for individuals to explore a career in student transportation. Attendees will have the chance to meet experienced school bus drivers, tour school buses, and ride or test drive a bus. OnWednesday, April 22nd, we celebrate Earth Day. Our beautiful world is a fragile one and it very much needs our help. On Earth Day, we are called to work together to create cleaner, more sustainable communities and environments. No effort is too small to benefit our planet.

Supporting your local farmers’ market is one of the best ways to help the earth. Consider this: produce and meat travel an average of 1,100-2,000 miles to your neighborhood supermarket. In contrast, meat and produce from your farmers’ market travel an average of 50-150 miles to reach your table. It’s a huge energy savings to buy local!

Vendors at the Saratoga Farmers’ Market are especially dedicated to sustainability. For example, all of our meat vendors raise their animals on pasture. Rotational grazing improves soil fertility and water retention, promotes animal health, and reduces emissions. Most of our vegetable and fruit vendors use eco-friendly growing practices, including natural fertilizers, no-till or minimum-till methods, and cover crops or compost to build healthier soils. The majority of our prepared food vendors limit their use of plastics, opting for compostable packaging instead.

Our farmers and producers are environmental innovators as well. Longlesson Farm uses gravityfed tanks to capture spring water for their herds. Grazin’ Acres will be installing tanks to capture run-off water for irrigating vegetables and will let their pigs graze in the forest. The pigs will clear brush, allowing native grasses to grow and opening the forest canopy. The Mushroom Shop puts a natural byproduct (wood shavings and soy hulls) in

biodegradable bags to grow stunning mushrooms. Their spent, mycelium-rich substrate enriches a local farmer’s vegetable fields. Our vegetable, flower and fruit farmers use drip-tape to irrigate their crops, which conserves water. Lovin’ Mama Farm grows a variety of flowers that attract native pollinators. Parchment and Daily Fresh work with local municipalities to compost food scraps. Katie Bakes Gluten Free repurposes leftover bread into croutons and crackers, reducing food waste. The Argyle Cheese Farmer adds whey, a protein-rich byproduct of cheesemaking, to their baked goods and pizzas. Truly, our farmers and producers go the extra mile to care for the earth.

Every dollar spent at the farmers’ market not only supports our local economy, it gives farmers and producers the resources to conduct ecologically responsible businesses. Thank you for helping us to help the planet!

Spinach and Herb Galette

YIELDS: 6-8 servings | PREP & COOK TIME: 1 hr (including dough rise) 30 min

INGREDIENTS:

*Ingredients currently available at the farmers’ market

• 1 package of pizza dough* (Bakery Suzanne may have some!)

• 1 tablespoon olive oil

• 1 bunch of scallions*, chopped

• 1 tablespoon dill*, chopped

• ½ cup parsley*, chopped

• ½ cup cilantro*, chopped

• Salt and freshly ground pepper

• 2 bunches of spinach* or 1 lb. bagged spinach*, chopped

• 2 eggs*, beaten and 1 egg, divided

• 1 cup cottage cheese

• ½ cup chopped roasted red peppers

• ½ cup crumbled feta cheese

• Grated zest of 1 lemon

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Remove dough from package and put in floured bowl. Cover and allow to warm up and rise.

2. Add 1 tablespoon oil to large skillet. Sautee scallions, herbs and spinach and cook on medium heat about 4 minutes. Drain any residual liquid from pan. Remove from heat and add cheeses, peppers and lemon zest. Taste for salt and pepper and then stir in the eggs.

3. Preheat the oven to 375 F. Spread out the dough in a 9x13 glass pan or on a cookie sheet. Spread the filling on the dough, leaving a border of 2 inches. Fold the edges of the dough over the filling and brush with 1 beaten egg white. Bake 25-30 minutes or until set.

Friends!

Here is another story I love to tell each start of the fishing season. I have so many great memories of my father and his love of fishing. It did not matter if it was the ocean or a little creek in Vermont where he grew up. He loved fishing and my brothers and I loved going with him. My brothers were more successful than I was at this sport. I think I talked too much back then as a child where I was kindly told to be quiet during our fishing adventures.

As I reminisce on the experience of fishing with my father, I realize that fishing was a way for him to relax and reconnect with his love for the outdoors. At that time, he worked 12 hours a day Monday through Saturday, which did not allow a lot of time to spend with his family. However, when he began getting one afternoon off during the week in the summer, I was excited when he chose to make

that afternoon our special time to go fishing together.

My father’s prep assignment for his three boys was to dig for worms and have the poles ready to go when he got home. I think that the digging for worms was my favorite part.

As I got a little older, my favorite part about fishing with my father was the many hours talking about his childhood and my dreams for the future. We didn’t catch many fish, but my memories are a much greater treasure than any mess of fish.

The memories and experience of fishing was something I tried to transfer and share with my son and daughter. When my son John was younger, I would take him fishing as often as I could. It turned out that by age five, he was better at fishing then I was. He would say to me “Daddy, you talk too much and scare the fish away!”

To this day, I still give fishing my best, and consider it a successful day if I can get my son to spend six hours with me. We do share our love of eating fresh fish.

One important tool that is handy when flipping and lifting fish from a pan is a fish spatula. The fish spatula is an elongated and thinner version of the common metal spatula, designed to

easily slip under delicate fillets of fish. It also has long slots that allow any liquid (for example, when poaching) to drain away. A fish spatula can be used for more than just flipping fish; it’s a versatile tool that can slide as easily under pancakes as it can hefty burgers. The slats in the blade allow any drippings, liquid, or grease to slip through, while the offset helps slide the blade over the edge of the pan and under whatever you want to turn. Simple Seasoned Grill Fish

INGREDIENTS

• 16 ounces fish fillets (four 4-ounce fillets)

• 4 teaspoons olive oil

• 1/2 teaspoon salt

• 1/2 teaspoon pepper

• 1 teaspoon Old Bay or seafood seasoning

• 1/2 teaspoon paprika

• ½ lemon

• chopped parsley for garnish, optional

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Start by preheating your pan or grill. Place the grill pan, skillet, or saute pan on the stovetop over medium-high heat and let it warm while you prep the fish fillets.

2. Brush one side of the fish fillets lightly with olive oil. 3. Sprinkle with salt and pepper, Old Bay (seafood seasoning), and paprika.

4. Place the fillets on the pan or grill with the seasoned side down.

5. Brush the second side with olive oil and sprinkle with additional seasonings.

6. Cook the fillets for about 2 minutes. Use a fish spatula to turn the fillets over and cook an additional 2 minutes.

7. Transfer the cooked fillets to a plate. Sprinkle with chopped parsley (optional) and drizzle with lemon juice.

Gary grew up in Pearl River NY and moved to Haverstraw as a teenager and graduated from Haverstraw high school. He was a sergeant detective in the Town of Haverstraw police department. He retired and moved to Saratoga in 2009.

SPAC News: Muse & SPACtacular On the Way

The Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SAPC) summer calendar is rapidly filling up, and two recently-announced events will bring a Grammy-winning rock group and a much-lauded dance floor to the amphitheater stage.

The arts center’s Summer SPACtacular fundraising event will return for its fourth iteration on Friday, May 29 from 5 to 11:30 p.m. The celebration, spread across the SPAC grounds, includes live music, a multicourse gourmet dinner, culinary tastings in the Party Tent, cocktails and zero-proof beverages, fireworks, and a culminating dance party with DJ Trumastr. This dance party, recently heralded as the “best dance floor” in Saratoga, presents a unique opportunity to not only be up on the main stage, but also get a glimpse behind the scenes of a storied music venue.

“As we mark SPAC’s 60th anniversary and my 10th year with this extraordinary organization, this evening feels especially meaningful, honoring a remarkable legacy while looking ahead to the future, and inviting guests to experience the energy, creativity, and connection that define SPAC at its best,” said SPAC CEO Elizabeth Sobol.

A couple months later, on July 24, Grammy-winning English rockers Muse will hit the SPAC stage, perhaps for a dance party of their own. The show will be preceded by the release of Muse’s tenth studio album, “The Wow! Signal,” on June 26. Opening for Muse in the Spa City will be Bloc Party, English rockers who incorporate electronica and house music into their sound, and Aussie rock group The Temper Track.

Yaddo Centennial Season Events Announced

— Yaddo recently announced a slate of events celebrating the famed artists’ community’s 2026 centennial season.

The season will kick off with The Artists’ Table, a tequila-inspired chef dinner on May 14. The evening offers a salon-style culinary experience inside the Yaddo Mansion, limited to 50 guests.

On June 2, Yaddo will host the 4th Annual Golf Invitational at The Country Club of Troy, a day of camaraderie and community in support of Yaddo’s residency program.

The Summer Benefit lights up June 25. This year’s party will serve as a Saratoga farewell to Yaddo President Elaina Richardson, who announced in December that she would

be stepping down from her post. More than 500 guests are expected at the benefit (450 attended last year). Past performers have included Natalie Merchant, Suzanne Vega, and Gabriel Kahane.

The Gardens at Yaddo will open to the public on June 8, offering several opportunities for

the community to experience the grounds. Throughout the summer season, Yaddo will present a series of free and low-cost community events, including Wine & Roses (a concert series in the rose garden), The Nature of Art (artist-led conversations), and Art of Wellness (Sunday morning yoga).

Poets Debuting New Work Inspired by Tang Museum Art

Thirteen local poets recently selected a piece of art at the Tang Museum’s All These Growing Things exhibition and wrote a poem about it. Those poems will be unveiled on Sunday, April 19 at 3 p.m. in the Tang’s upstairs Molloy Gallery.

Each poet will read their

original poem next to the painting, sculpture, drawing, or photograph that inspired them. The poets and audience will travel around the gallery, moving from work to work and from poem to poem.

The event, part of the Laureate Poetry Series, is free and open to the public.

Saratoga’s Cassandra Kubinski Teams Up with “Dance Moms” Star Abby Lee Miller

— Billboard-charting singersongwriter Cassandra Kubinski, a fixture of the local arts scene (as a performer and Caffe Lena board member) is teaming up with Abby Lee Miller, star of Lifetime’s hit reality TV series “Dance Moms,” for two local events on May 2 and 3.

Thirteen of Cassandra’s original songs served as the musical backdrop for “Dance Moms” dances performed by Maddie Ziegler, Brooke Hyland, Ava Michelle, Kendall Vertes, and others across eight seasons of the show. While Kubinski and Miller never collaborated directly during the filming of “Dance Moms,” they connected through social media and are now bringing the music and choreography together with a unique concert/talk concept and dance/acro class with live accompaniment.

“Dance Moms changed my life,” Kubinski said in a news release. “I connected with people around the globe thanks to my songs being on the show, and it’s an honor and joy to work with Abby Lee Miller to give both dancers and fans a chance to go deeper into the stories behind the show, the drama and fun, and the songs.”

MALTA — For many Saratogians, the coming of spring yields thoughts of baseball, barbecues, and horses. But with the Saratoga Film Forum returning to action last Thursday and the Malta Drive-In scheduled to open next Friday, spring is also a season of celebration for Saratoga cinephiles.

The Malta Drive-In will screen “The Super Mario

Galaxy Movie” and the Michael Jackson biopic “Michael” on its opening day, April 24. Showtimes and co-features have not yet been announced.

The drive-in has been in continuous operation since 1949 and typically runs from April to October. Last year’s lineup included haunted horror nights that featured actors dressed as zombies, masked killers, and other spooky villains.

UPH Lineup: Orchestra Closes Season, “History Doesn’t Suck!”, Grammy Winner, Comedy

— The Schenectady-Saratoga Symphony Orchestra (SSSO) will bring its 2025–26 season to a close with “Poetic Echoes,” presented across two Capital Region stages: 7 p.m. Saturday, April 18 at Universal Preservation Hall (UPH) and 3 p.m. Sunday, April 19 at Proctors. The orchestra will also unveil its highly anticipated 2026–27 season at the conclusion of each performance.

For its season finale, the SSSO will be joined by Saratoga Voices and soloists Brittany Palmer and Ann Marie Adamick for a celebration of music and poetry. Florence Price’s “Four Songs from the Weary Blues” brings the words of Langston Hughes to life, while Vaughan Williams’ “Towards the Unknown Region” sets Walt Whitman’s poetry to sweeping music. The program closes with Mendelssohn’s enchanting “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” capturing Shakespeare’s timeless tale of magic, love, and mischief.

On May 10 at 7:30 p.m., UPH will welcome Professor Greg Jackson, creator of the popular podcast “History That Doesn’t Suck!” Jackson’s touring show combines storytelling, multimedia, and live music to take audiences on a journey through the first 100 years of American history in 100 minutes. The show will be in town for one night only.

UPH’s summer lineup will kick off with Corinne Bailey Rae and Tom Papa, who are each headlining their own night of live entertainment. Bailey Rae will bring an evening of genre-defying music to the Great Hall at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, June 5. Papa will deliver a night of comedy at 8 p.m. on Friday, July 17.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of “Corinne Bailey Rae,” the Grammy Awardwinning singer’s debut album that introduced the world to Bailey Rae’s soulful, sun-soaked sound. Originally released in Feb. 2006, the record produced hits like “Put Your Records On” and “Like a Star,” earning critical praise, multi-platinum sales, and Grammy nominations.

With more than 30 years of experience as a standup comedian, Tom Papa has found success as an actor, host, and author. Papa’s “The Grateful Bread Tour” plays off the title of his weekly podcast “Breaking Bread with Tom Papa,” which features Tom and his guest eating, drinking, and celebrating the true meaning of breaking bread with conversations. Super DIRTcar Series Opens Championship Season at AlbanySaratoga Speedway

MALTA — A battle in New York’s Capital Region awaits the Super DIRTcar Series, as the quest for the 2026 championship begins at Albany-Saratoga Speedway.

The 61st season opener on Friday, April 17 will showcase the Beasts of the Northeast with a 61-lap feature paying $6,100-towin. It’s also the 2026 championship season opener, giving one driver the chance to strike first on the road to the World of Outlaws World Finals.

Joining the Super DIRTcar Series are the track’s DIRTcar Sportsman and DIRTcar Pro Stock divisions.

Here’s a look at what to watch for at Albany-Saratoga:

• With the championship season kicking off on Friday, it also begins Mat Williamson’s quest for a third-straight title, and fourth title overall. Williamson has found plenty of success at AlbanySaratoga in the past, sweeping both Super DIRTcar Series stops in 2024, and earning three consecutive DIRTcar 358 Modified Series podiums. He finished sixth and eighth in the Series’ two appearances at Albany-Saratoga last season. A win by “Money Mat” on Friday will be his 39th career Series win, tying Bob McCreadie for seventh on the all-time wins list.

• The last time the series battled at Albany-Saratoga, it was 10-time series champion Matt Sheppard who stood in Victory Lane during Malta Massive Weekend. The Finger Lakes driver has two series victories at Albany-Saratoga over the past four seasons and has finished in the top five in three of his last four starts at the track. Overall, he’s earned three wins, 12 top-fives, and 13 toptens. A win by “Super Matt” will be his 104th Series triumph, as he continues his chase of Brett Hearn at the top of the Series all-time wins list (141).

• Friday’s stop at the AlbanySaratoga Speedway marks the first venue the series visits in 2026, where several drivers race at their home track. Defending track champion Mike Mahaney, Felix

Roy, Peter Britten, Jack Lehner, and Justin Stone each call AlbanySaratoga home on Friday nights and aim to score a victory in front of their hometown crowd. Lehner resides in Saratoga Springs and is a three-time feature winner at the 4/10-mile oval, reaching Victory Lane in 2024.

• Upset Special: Along with a stout group of Super DIRTcar Series regulars who race at AlbanySaratoga Speedway every Friday, there’s a group of regional drivers aiming to pull an upset victory, including last year’s event winner L.J. Lombardo. Former track champions Marc Johnson and Matt Delorenzo will also be aiming for the $6,100 prize on Friday, as they battle for their first career series victory.

Toga Dynasty Claims Tournament Title

Toga Dynasty, a fourth-grade boys basketball team from Saratoga Springs, won the New York State of Mind tournament championship last weekend. After going 2-1 in pool play, with wins over the Oswego

Buccaneers (28-16) and Halfmoon’s Elevate Wolfpack (40-37), Toga Dynasty advanced to the championship game, where it defeated Elevate again, 38-34, to capture the title. The tournament was held April 11-12 in Saratoga.

Team USA Softball Player Holds Clinics in Saratoga

About 30 girls sat reverentially in a circle, awaiting instruction from one of the most talented softball players on the planet.

The scene unfolded at D-BAT Saratoga Springs, a baseball and softball training facility that opened in 2024. The academy’s guest of honor last Saturday, Kinzie Hansen, spent the day leading young softball players in catching and hitting clinics.

Hansen’s accolades are plentiful and include capturing a gold medal at the 2022 World Games, winning four-straight Women’s College World Series titles (her team was the first in college softball history to achieve this), catching for Team USA, and playing for the AUSL’s Oklahoma City Spark. Hyping her appearance, D-BAT owner Adam Britten called Hansen “one of the most successful softball players of our generation.”

Somewhere in her packed schedule (Hansen had to be in Chicago and then Oklahoma shortly after visiting the Spa City), the 24-year-old found time to train and mentor the next generation of softball players. Assisting her in this task were, among others, high schoolers Grace Schaefer from Spa Catholic and Kelsey Compositor from Saratoga Springs.

“There are only two things you can control: your attitude and your effort,” Hansen said in her opening remarks to the girls. In this clinic, Hansen focused on her specialty: catching. The position can be both physically and psychologically demanding. The entire team looks at the catcher throughout the game, and it’s the catcher’s job, Hansen said, to lead by example.

Another of Hansen’s commandments surely pleased the parents in the room. The softball star reminded the kids at her feet that “without [your parents], you

probably wouldn’t be able to play the game that you love.” The circle of girls then turned towards the adults nearby and said “thank you, parents” in unison.

“It’s been really fun,” Hansen told Saratoga TODAY about her clinics at D-BAT. “A lot of the girls have been very engaged. I know that sometimes in the past clinics that I’ve done, some of the girls seem a little bit bored, but I think that today, almost every single girl that’s been here has been completely invested in what’s been going on. So that makes me very proud. We’ve had a lot of fun. I mean, I was sweating my butt off too while I was coaching them, so it’s been a really good time.”

Hansen continued, “Coming to these under-saturated areas where there’s not as many good softball training coaches, seeing the passion and the amount of girls that can show up is tremendous… The love for the game, it makes these young girls have confidence and find a purpose.

I find it so interesting that a lot of young girls nowadays with social media, they can struggle sometimes with confidence and identity and things like that. But playing softball and having your sisters on your team, or a sisterhood of teammates, it can be tremendous for their development.”

As a former Oklahoma Sooner and current Oklahoma City Spark, Hansen said she was excited for the 2028 Summer Olympics, which will include softball games played in Oklahoma City. Hansen’s sport will return to Olympic

competition after being snubbed at the 2024 games in Paris.

“Oklahoma is like the mecca of softball,” Hansen declared. “We can fit almost 20,000 people in that stadium. So, I’m really excited for that to be packed out for Team USA. I don’t know another site in the country that can hold that many people for a softball field. Oklahoma is like my second family, so I’m excited to see the turnout for that.”

Perhaps one day, a girl from one of Hansen’s clinics will find themselves playing at softball’s mecca, too.

Local Weightlifter Defends National Title in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH — Local weightlifter Lucille Murphy defended her Masters National Champion title on April 11 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Murphy took second in the snatch lifting 75 kg and first in the clean and jerk lifting 96 kg. Her 171 kg total earned Murphy the gold overall and secured the second national title in her race for the Triple Crown.

Murphy will compete at the New York State Championships in Binghamton in September and will compete for the final national title in December in Pleasanton, California.

Murphy currently serves as treasurer for the Saratoga Springs City School District.

Local Horse Trainer Earns 3,000th Win

— Mechanicville native Chad Brown notched his 3,000th career victory last Friday when his horse Zulu Kingdom won the Grade 1 Maker’s Mark Mile Stakes at Keeneland.

“It was really special. I’ll always remember it,” Brown told the New York Racing Association (NYRA). “It was great to do it in a prestigious race like the Maker’s Mark and with a great horse that has been so consistent.”

According to Equibase, Brown’s career earnings total more than $334 million. He’s won five Eclipse Awards for Outstanding Trainer and has been NYRA’s top trainer nine different years (2015-2022, 2024).

“It’s an achievement shared by so many team members past and present as well as our clients,

jockeys, and horses,” Brown said.

“It takes a lot over 18 1/2-years now of training horses and there’s so many important people in those groups I’ve mentioned and I’m very appreciative for that.”

Brown’s interest in horse racing was sparked by childhood visits to the Saratoga Race Course, and he accrued early experience in the industry at the local harness track. While studying animal science at

Cornell University, Brown spent summers in Saratoga working under Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey. Brown later struck out on his own in 2007.

As of April 13, Brown’s lifetime stats included 12,117 starts; 3,001 wins; and a Win, Place, Show (WPS) percentage of 58.

Brown’s horse Emerging Market is currently ranked 8th on the 2026 Kentucky Derby leaderboard.

Last year, two Saratoga Springs high school baseball teams won their first-ever state championships. The successful seasons were remarkable enough to warrant a downtown parade that concluded with mayoral proclamations on the steps of City Hall. This year, both teams are returning with their titlewinning rosters largely intact.

For the Saratoga Catholic Saints, the season began disappointingly with a 5-0 shutout loss to Shaker. But the squad quickly rebounded with an 8-2 victory against Greenwich on April 13.

Against Shaker, outfielder Kihl Kelly had two hits and a walk and ended up being one of only three Saints to reach base. Starting pitcher Carson Moser faced 14 batters in 3 innings, striking out 8 of them while

allowing 1 run. Against Greenwich, Kelly had another standout showing, hitting 2-3 with a triple and 2 RBI. Joey Lindner also went 2-3 with a double and an RBI, while Jason Pescetti hit 2-2 and scored a run. Starter Pierce Byrne earned his first win of the season, whiffing 11 batters and allowing just one run in 5 innings of work.

The Blue Streaks, meanwhile, also lost their season opener before notching 4-straight victories, including a gobsmacking 32-2 win against Averill Park on April 8. In that extraordinary contest, Saratoga collectively netted 24 hits, with seniors Jack Rigbar and Raul Rodriguez each earning 4 hits apiece.

After five games, five Blue Streaks have batting averages above .500. Brady Mills led his team early in the year with 12 hits and 4 doubles. Rigbar led in RBI (13), triples (2) and was one of two players to hit a homer. On the mound, Brendan

Kantscheidt has allowed just one earned run in 6.2 innings while also leading the team in strikeouts (10). Also impressive in the early going: Max Sawicz has allowed one run in 6.2 innings, Shea Crotty allowed zero runs and 4 hits in 5.1 innings, and Michael Kakaty whiffed 6 batters and gave up 2 runs in 5 innings.

NYS Parks to Conduct Prescribed Burns at Big Bend Preserve

MOREAU — New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (State Parks) is preparing for its second prescribed burn season at Big Bend Preserve, with plans to conduct burns this spring, summer, and fall.

State Parks treated 112 acres with prescribed fire at Big Bend during the inaugural burn season in 2025 as part of the agency’s stewardship efforts.

Burns will only be conducted when weather conditions meet strict safety and suitability

standards. Factors such as wind speed, humidity, and fuel moisture levels will be carefully assessed before scheduling any burn. Due to these considerations, specific burn dates cannot be provided far in advance.

Each prescribed burn will last approximately one day. The burns will be conducted by State Parks staff in collaboration with partners such as the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the Albany Pine Bush Preserve. During burn operations,

temporary closures of roads, trails, and certain areas within Big Bend Preserve may occur to ensure public safety. Notifications will be posted on the Moreau Lake State Park website, mobile app, and Facebook page approximately 24 hours prior to the burns taking place.
