ENVISION STUDIOS
LIVE-WORK URBAN HOUSING PROJECT
118 10THAVENUE, NEW YORK CITY, NY
FALL 2023
The makerspace intends to amplify the community’s value for STEAM education with the intent to bring about a new era of New York.
The project utilizes mass timber to allow the building to become a learning tool for its students.

The exterior curvature of the facade mirrors the adjacent Highline project to create a gathering effect to contrast the orthagonal neighborhood. This movement was made to meet the need of the community for open collaborative space in the Chelsea district. The use of the vacant plot of land across the street, this gathering effect is enhanced and allows for a impactful green space for the mostly grey neighborhood. While the formal understanding of the project defies the Chelsea neighborhood, the detailing of the facade aids in maintaining the scenic view from the neighboring observation deck. By using horizontal cornice lines, a steady direction is maintained, which reinforces the forward momentum of the street. The vertical sun shading devices on the exterior facade allow for the elegance of the building’s height to be made aware and balance out the horizontal detailing. Through the use of a cantilevered entrance, the structure remains on human scale, therefore being welcoming to the building.
