Lumibility Continues to Advocate!

This January, CEO Denise Daviau, Chief Operating Officer George Reid-Perry, Deputy Program Officers Amber DeFelice (Adult Services) and Julie Hall (Children & Family Services), and Outreach & Intake Specialist Jen Kostek met with Erin McBride, Senior Outreach Assistant to United States Senator Christopher Murphy.

We discussed the urgent need for increased funding and staffing for communitybased service agencies like Lumibility. The conversation also highlighted the critical role our agency ’ s programs play in supporting children and adults with differing abilities across Connecticut.

We’re grateful to Erin McBride for taking the time to speak with staff, and for offering a meaningful opportunity to witness the incredible work you all do each day to “enhance skills and transform lives of individuals with differing abilities.”

Maveryk Shines in Kidsteps Birth to Three Program!

It was during the holiday season two years ago when the Kidsteps Birth to Three team first met Maveryk. Born premature and with a low birth weight, he faced early challenges from the very beginning. Maveryk’s guardians didn’t know it then, but Kidsteps would turn out to be the greatest gift to the family for the next three years.

As Maveryk’s family has one year left with Kidsteps Birth to Three, the feeling is bittersweet. While the weekly visits will soon come to an end, Mav is thriving like never before! Overall, Maveryk’s family can confidently say that Kidsteps Birth to Three program has been the best thing to happen to them!

How Kidsteps Helped Twin Girls Grow and Shine

Here is a recent story from a mother of twin girls, Cataleya and Catalina.

“My name is Leslie, and I’m a mom of two autistic twin girls. When I first heard the word “autistic,” I was overwhelmed and scared, especially with twins. I didn’t know where to start or what to do.

Then I learned about the Birth to Three program (Kidsteps), and it truly changed everything. Through their support, I’ve learned so much about my daughters and how to help them. Baby A, Cataleya, hates when her food touches and gets upset if anything is mixed. Baby B, Catalina, doesn’t mind at all and happily finger-feeds. I wouldn’t have understood these things without Jennifer, their amazing developmental therapist.

How Kidsteps Helped Twin Girls Grow and Shine (

Continued)

Jennifer has been with us since the girls were a year and a half old. She’s taught us how to communicate, how toys can have “ purpose play,” and how to build small skills step by step. The girls are two now and still don’t speak, point, or use spoons yet. They also still use bottles. It’s a big journey, but knowing Jennifer is there every week gives me so much hope and relief. She even taught me basic signs like “all done” and “ more, ” and the girls have started responding. Moments like that remind me we ’ re moving forward.

In December, Jennifer told me about a Santa photo event at Cherish. I signed them up, and they loved exploring the sensory gym. Even though they were scared of Santa, they still ended up taking a picture. Experiences like that mean the world to us. Because the girls are very sensitive to sound, they always wear their noise-canceling headphones when we go out. And thanks to this program, it has really helped me understand my daughters and the ways I can help them. This is one thing I will never regret.”

Bhumi’s Inspiring Journey as a Lunch Aide

In 2023, Bhumi began volunteering as a lunch aide at Momauguin Elementary School through the Individualized Supported Employment (ISE) program. From day one, she demonstrated an incredible ability to adapt, quickly learning the lunchroom routines with minimal staff guidance. Her positive attitude and strong sense of responsibility stood out immediately.

Her warm interactions with students and willingness to assist wherever needed made her a favorite among both staff and children. Recognizing her hard work and commitment, Momauguin Elementary School proudly offered Bhumi a paid lunch aide position in September 2025!

Today, Bhumi continues to thrive in her role. She brings joy and energy to the lunchroom, constantly engaging with students and supporting her fellow aides with a smile. Her story is a true example of how passion and perseverance can lead to success and make a lasting impact on a community.

Lera’s Update at the Ronald McDonald House!

Last June, we introduced you to Lera, an individual in our Individualized Supported Employment (ISE) program who volunteers every Thursday at the Ronald McDonald House in New Haven, which provides accommodation to individuals with chronic medical conditions who cannot afford hospital stays. She originally assisted with cleaning and maintaining a tidy environment for families staying there.

Now, Lera has taken her commitment even further by including lunch prep in her weekly routine! From organizing meals to making sure families have nourishing food, her efforts truly make a difference for those going through challenging times.

He has a deep passion for history and a strong connection to his hometown. Every week, Corey volunteers for four hours at the museum. He contributes in meaningful ways during his shifts. Over time, Corey has grown more independent in his role and now completes his shift with minimal involvement from his Employment Specialist.

Henry’s Path to Independence Through Assistive Technology

Time was always a challenge for Henry, especially with his unpredictable work schedule. While others checked their watches and cell phones, Henry struggled until Assistive Technology came into the picture.

They didn’t just hand Henry a device and hope for the best. They took the time to understand Henry’s needs, preferences, and routines. Through careful assessment, we found the perfect solution: a simple, accessible watch tailored to Henry’s unique way of interacting with time. Henry’s new watch was more than just a timepiece; it was a game-changer.

With the press of a button, it speaks the current time aloud, giving Henry instant clarity. Alarms can be set with countdowns to help him anticipate events and transitions. Henry proudly wears his snazzy new watch, feeling more connected and confident among his work crew. Instead of a traditional clasp, Henry’s watch has an elastic band, making it easy to slip on and off, thereby supporting his independence in dressing from head to toe. This wasn’t just about a watch. It was about dignity, inclusion, and the power of personalized support. Henry’s success is proof that Assistive Technology isn’t one-size-fits-all. It’s about finding the right fit for the right person, and professionals in our Assistive Technology Program who made it possible. Henry now moves through his day with more ease, fewer repeated questions, and a sense of pride.

ENRICHMENT SERVICES

North Haven Enrichment Program Enjoys an Autumn Day at Rose Orchards

In November, individuals and staff from our North Haven Enrichment Program enjoyed a wonderful day exploring the beautiful grounds of Rose Orchards. The visit offered the perfect opportunity to embrace the crisp fall weather, spend meaningful time together, and connect with the natural world.

Beyond the hayride, the group spent time engaging with the farm environment and creating moments of joy that carried throughout the day. Outings like this are invaluable to our program, offering opportunities to build connections and explore new places.

Their visit to Rose Orchards was truly a highlight of the fall season, and they are grateful for the memories made. They look forward to many more adventures that bring everyone together in a meaningful way.

Madison Enrichment Program Spreads Cheer

With Ugly Sweaters!

The Madison Enrichment Program kicked off last holiday season in true festive fashion with their Ugly Sweater Party! Individuals and staff arrived in their most delightfully tacky sweaters, each more colorful, creative, and fun than the last. The room was filled with bright patterns, jingling accessories, and plenty of cheerful holiday spirit.

One of the most heartwarming highlights of the day was the gift exchange. Everyone thoughtfully selected and exchanged presents, creating moments of joy, surprise, and gratitude. The smiles and excitement captured the true spirit of giving.
