Tranquility In Laguna Beach, CA, residents are provided multiple connections to nature through an atrium, water feature, and exterior gardens; these connections to nature have been shown, through studies of biophilia, to reduce blood pressure, perceptions and experiences of stress, as well as garner a sense of comfort and well being. Passive solar strategies are utilized, considering the home’s orientation as well as providing extended roof eaves to shade the house from the sun in summer and allow light into the space in winter. Clerestories and skylights let light deeper into the space during the day, reducing the resident’s dependency on artificial lighting during the day.

Mountain Escape
Resident’s desired their home in Big Bear to have a contemporary rustic style while providing a functional space. Decks on the South Facing side are oriented to maximize the view of Big Bear Lake. A sculpted concrete tree becomes more visible as one enters the house. This feature symbolically ties the house to its surroundings, functioning as a fireplace and art display. The tree also continues through to the lower level. A sunroom is utilized to enhance the connection to the outdoors as well as reduce heating and cooling costs. Lots of windows reduce residents’ dependency on electric lighting and are strategically placed primarily on the Northern and Southern sides of the home.

FIRST FLOOR PLAN
A project for an intro to Revit course to familiarize students with the capabilities of the software. Design requirements were open-ended. Proposed to be built in Palm Springs, the home contains three bedrooms, two and a half bathrooms, and a private deck overlooking the street. Views to nature and the xeriscaped yard are emphasized on the interior. Additionally, trees provide shade to south facing windows and a concrete fireplace in the center of the common areas of the home functions as thermal mass to heat the home throughout the cooler months. Plumbing walls are aligned throughout the space for ease of installation.

SITE PLAN
LEVEL 1 FLOOR PLAN
In Silverlake, CA, a site with 8 lots, 30’x32’ was selected for several multi-family residential projects. After determining which style to employ in the design amongst the 7 members of the particular group, who were designing the homes for the adjacent residences, we decided on modern. ADA accessibility was considered through including an elevator to all levels and an ADA ramp from the sidewalk. There is potential for rental spaces on the upper levels and a retail space or oice at the ground floor. Automated sunshades are implemented to subdue the intensity of the western sun.
