BADGE PACK
Introduction
Hi everyone! We’re Jamie and Maddie from the ScoutsCymru Youth Team, and we’re so excited to introduce you to the Gwobr Cennin Pedr – a brand-new award celebrating everything that makes Welsh culture so special!
This badge is all about helping young people connect with the language, traditions, stories, and spirit of Wales in a fun, hands-on ways. Whether it’s learning a few new Welsh words, exploring local legends, tasting traditional food, or discovering the amazing places that make up our nation – there’s something for every section to enjoy.
We are pleased to partner with Cadw on this badge and appreciate their funding contribution, and their enabling of free access to their monuments for scouting groups, to support it.
We can’t wait to see leaders and volunteers across Wales bringing this award to life and inspiring young people to feel proud of our culture and heritage. So dive in, get creative, and let’s celebrate what it means to be part of Wales – together!

Requirements
(4 to 6 years)
Complete 4 of the requirements, you must do at least 1 from each theme.
Food and Skills
• Help make Welsh cakes or another traditional food and try it.
• Smell and touch Welsh ingredients (leeks, cheese, etc.)
• Decorate the hall and lay tables for a Welsh feast.
Creativity and Arts
• Learn a Welsh song and sing it together.
• Draw your interpretation of a Welsh poem.
• Design a Welsh castle or your own imaginary one.
History and Identity
• Find out what the Eisteddfod is and why it’s special to Wales. (You could listen to music, look at photos, or try a mini-Eisteddfod in your drey!)
• Try on traditional Welsh clothing and learn a fact about it.
• Visit a Welsh historical site (free admission with Cadw)*.
• Engage with the Scout Promise in Welsh by listening, learning some words or phrases, or learning the full Promise. (depending on your Welsh language ability).
• Listen to a story about Dewi Sant.
(6 to 8 years)
Complete 6 of the requirements, you must do at least 1 from each theme.
Food and Skills
• Help make Welsh cakes or another traditional Welsh food and try it.
• Decorate Dydd Gŵ yl Dewi cupcakes or biscuits.
Creativity and Arts
• Learn a Welsh song and sing it together.
• Draw your interpretation of a Welsh poem.
• Design a Welsh castle or your own imaginary one, think about what makes a good castle!
History and Identity
• Find out what the Eisteddfod is and why it’s special to Wales. (You could listen to music, look at photos, or try a mini Eisteddfod in your colony!)
• Try on traditional Welsh clothing and learn a fact about it.
• Visit a Welsh historical site and create a poster about it. (free admission with Cadw)*
• Engage with the Scout Promise in Welsh by listening, learning some words or phrases, or learning the full Promise (depending on your Welsh language ability).
• Listen to at least two stories about Dewi Sant.
Requirements
(8 to 10.5 years)
Complete 7 of the requirements, you must do at least 2 from each theme.
Food and Skills
• Help cook a traditional Welsh meal on an open fire (with adult support!) and try it
• Learn about the history of love spoons and design your own
• Make Cawl, learn what goes into it and try it yourself
Creativity and Arts
• Learn a Welsh song and sing it together
• Draw your interpretation of a Welsh poem
• Design a Welsh castle or your own imaginary one
History and Identity
• Find out what the Eisteddfod is and why it’s special to Wales – you could watch a video, take part in a mini-Eisteddfod, or listen to Welsh music and poems.
• Listen to stories or legends about Dewi Sant and share what you learn with your Six.
• Try on traditional Welsh clothing and learn a fact about it.
• Visit a Welsh historical site and create a poster about it (free admission with Cadw).*
• Engage with the Scout Promise in Welsh by listening, learning some words or phrases, or learning the full Promise (depending on your Welsh language ability).
Requirements
(10.5 to 14 years)
You must complete 8 activities, at least 2 from each theme.
Food and Skills
• Prepare and cook a traditional Welsh 3-course meal on an open fire.
• Plan a simple Welsh menu for a camp meal.
• Adapt a traditional dish for vegetarians or allergies.
• Make a short video explaining how to cook a Welsh dish.
• Design and make a love spoon.
Creativity and Arts
• Learn a dawns werin (Welsh folk dance).
• Draw your interpretation of a Welsh poem.
• Create a performance (music, drama, or poetry) inspired by Wales or its legends.
History and Identity
• Learn about the Eisteddfod and how it has developed.
• Try on traditional Welsh clothing and learn a fact about it.
• Visit three Welsh historical sites and create a poster or digital display about them (free admission with Cadw).*
• Learn the Scout Promise in Welsh (you could learn it fully, practice key phrases, or help others depending on your confidence in Welsh).
• Research who Dewi Sant was and read three stories about him.
• Research the meaning of the Welsh National Anthem, think about what it means to you as an individual and to others in Wales. Make a storyboard of the anthem.
Requirements
(14 to 18 years)
Complete 10 of the requirements, you must do at least 2 from each theme and 2 Arwain activities.
Food and Skills
• Prepare and cook a traditional Welsh threecourse meal on an open fire.
• Research the origin and history of your chosen Welsh dishes.
• Compare Welsh food traditions with another country’s (e.g., Italian, Indian, etc.)
• Design and carve or decorate your own love spoon with symbolic meanings.
Creativity and Arts
• Learn a dawns werin (Welsh folk dance).
• Create a visual or digital interpretation of a Welsh poem.
• Submit an entry for an Eisteddfod - this could be in music, writing, art, or performance.
• Plan and run a mini-Eisteddfod for a younger section (Squirrels to Scouts).
History and Identity
• Learn about the Eisteddfod and how it has developed over time - consider cultural and political impacts.
• Try on traditional Welsh clothing and learn a fact about its historical or cultural context.
• Visit three Welsh historical sites and deliver a presentation about them (free admission with Cadw).*
• Learn and recite the Scout Promise in Welsh. If you're fluent, help others learn the promise or explore the meaning behind it.
• Research the meaning of the Welsh National Anthem, think about what it means to you as an individual and to others in Wales.
• Ask people from other countries what they know about Wales and share what you learn, teach them a few things about Wales too.
