New Sermon Series: The Adventure of Christmas
The season of Advent, leading to Christmas, invites us into a posture of waiting and watching for Who is coming. We’re not really good at waiting. Yet, God calls us to be a people who are constantly in anticipation of the in-breaking Kingdom of the King of KIngs. This is an invitation to participate in the greatest story ever told, of God’s love made Incarnate in the birth of the Christ child. It’s this adventure story, the knowledge of our King’s victory, and the anticipation of our King’s return which gives us missional purpose and joyful hope. Read more on page 4. WINTER 2023-2024

From Pastor Pete Dear St. Andrew’s, Did you hear that Starbucks is issuing a new cup size for Christmas? It’s called the Adventi! But, really, the Christian season Advent is no joke! During the four Sundays before Christmas Eve, we are invited to practice the discipline of waiting. We live our lives between two advents. The first advent happened with the coming of Christ as Jesus of Nazareth, born in Bethlehem. The second advent will be when Christ returns at the sound of trumpets, and the new Heaven and the New Earth will be ushered in by the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. While Advent occurs during the darkest time of the year (in the northern hemisphere), we still can find light in hope. This light isn’t Christmas, but it is Christ. This poem captures how it is to live in the darkness of the world in this season, while acknowledging the deeper and brighter truth of our coming Messiah. Looking toward Christmas Advent again, And the very stones are silent. In the east, no star; only shadows and to the threat of darkness. We have run out of light, and we wait in fear. Still, from the cosmic distance, tentacles of brilliance probe, seek us out, looking for a dwelling place among us. - Caryl Porter, Advent, 1990

Church Work Day Many thanks to those who showed up for the November 18 workday! We did a lot of tree trimming, weeding, and cleaned up the SW parking lot. Preschool doors were painted, Sunday school and VBS materials were organized, and Christmas decorations were brought down for the Hanging of the Greens on November 26. These work days are fun, and a good way to get to know others better while serving our Lord.
Prima Vera Foundation This year the Prima Vera Foundation is celebrating their 40th anniversary of serving the Tucson Community! St. Andrew’s started assisting with the Men’s Homeless Shelter from the very beginning! We prepare and deliver a complete meal for service on the 3rd Thursday every month. The Mission Committee funds this valuable program. We’ve had several folks assist with the preparation and service of this meal over the years. More helpers are needed for this important ministry. God Stories
Serve Our City 2023 God’s goodness shone through in our Serve Our City event. We had 18 churches and over 1500 volunteers participating this year. Thanks to El Tour de Tucson, over 900 bikes were given to students in need all over our community. We had 140 service project options with 15 schools receiving upgrades with much needed painting and landscaping or snacks and hygiene products. We also got to bless our Adopt-a-Families with hygiene items on top of that! The city collected 337 Thanksgiving food bags and 250 gift cards for families with 200+ food bags coming this weekend through our partnership with Catalina Foothills Church! Special thanks to our wonderful Boy Scouts for generously contributing to the food bags!

It is such a blessing to join with other churches to make a greater impact for Jesus. Faith that Works Tucson, the nonprofit that St. Andrew’s launched, provided much of the funding for Serve Our City. Thank you so much for your donations that help us continue to make a positive impact for Jesus in our city. LOVE Christmas Mission Offering
KAPSOWAR MISSION HOSPITAL CHARITY AND SCHOLARSHIP FUND

For 2023, our annual Advent Mission project will be the Kapsowar Mission Hospital Charity and Scholarship Fund. The Kapsowar Mission Hospital is a 130 bed hospital that provides the majority of medical care to a remote region of northwest Kenya. The Gospel and Christ’s love is shared with the patients, staff, and visitors to the hospital. The people in the region are primarily farmers whose average income is $100/month. Jerry and Elizabeth Koleski travel from Tucson to Kapsowar annually to provide medical services at the hospital and in the community.
•
Penicillin shots for children with Rheumatic Heart Disease ($1.50/child/month)
•
Will help prevent potentially fatal progression of the disease
•
Ambulance transport of patients to the large government hospital ($70/person, which can be two-three weeks pay for many patients, or $300 to Tenwek specialty hospital five hours away)
•
CT scan or MRI $40-$55
•
Specialty drugs for TB or HIV $57-$70
The Koleskis are starting a charity and scholarship fund to help people with the cost of healthcare. These funds would be distributed as needed to patients and families who would otherwise be unable to pay for them. Some examples of what funds would be used for are the following:

Surfactant used to mature newborn babies lungs $220
•
Lab tests for sickle cell anemia $30
•
Community Health Evangelism (CHE) Training of Trainers in Nairobi ($300/student)
•
•
Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD) screening ($30/ session)
Will train people in the villages around Kapsowar to teach their own neighbors to solve their community’s health issues
•
RHD is the primary heart disease killer of children and young adults in the region
Having a charity fund can be a literal life saver, as well as a source of funds to promote health and development.
•
Will help expand RHD screening to other locations in Kenya
•
Maintain and update ultrasound equipment for RHD screening (as needed)

Youth With A Mission Hannah has been serving with Youth With A Mission (YWAM) for eight years. She served in Lesvos, Greece at a refugee camp. During that time God opened her eyes to the needs of refugees as well as the incredible open door we have to the unreached Muslim world. She has traveled between Greece and the Middle East serving refugees and training others to reach these nations. She is currently based in Thessaloniki, Greece. There she has trained and mentored youth, and their team
launched the first Christian youth center in the second largest city in Greece! She and her husband, Juan (13 years with YWAM), are moving at the end of the year. They will serve with the same organization next year in Paris. Hannah’s partnership with St. Andrew’s began years ago when she met and worked with Dick Kampa after being invited to Tucson by Cherie Gray to work at International Kids Kamp.
Tucson Refugee Ministry Tucson Refugee Ministry opened Building Bridges Community Center in the heart of a rough Amphi neighborhood. As a resource center, we offer employment resources, transportation resources, food, opportunities for building social networks, and a lot of hope! As a ministry that concentrates on relationships, we knew that it would be not only the 532 refugee families that we work with, but also the homeless and working poor in the area directly around the community center, that would need to know and feel the love of Jesus through our relationships with them. We opened our free coffee shop and the word got out. More and more people from the neighborhood broke their loneliness and isolation and started to come in. As they came in, they started to feel an ownership over the community center. They realized it is where they find relationships, community, and hope. It is making the
neighborhood safer as they begin to build relationships with us and each other. They have begun to get out of enemy mode and get into healthier relationships! Some of our biggest needs are volunteers for connection, resources to continue programs like the coffee shop and food pantry, and prayers! Learn more at tucsonrefugeeministry.com. 30 Hour Famine
8:00 AM, FEBRUARY 10 - 12:00 PM, FEBRUARY 11 On February 10 and 11, our Youth Group is participating in World Vision’s 30 Hour Famine. It is not right that thousands of kids are dying from hunger each day. We are going without food for 30 hours to raise money so others can eat. It only takes $40 to help feed a child for a month. Our goal is to raise $10,000 for these kids in need and with your help, we can change the world! Here’s how you can help: Pray, and ask God to bless our students as they overcome hunger. Moonlight Dinner Donations
It is that time of year again! We are starting to collect items for the 2024 Moonlight Dinner and Auction. Your donations are tax deductible! Our Preschool and Kindergarten offers small class sizes, two qualified teachers in each classroom, indoor and outdoor play based learning curriculum, within a faith based environment. Children’s Ministry Christmas Eve Play
Get ready to shine Jesus’ light this Christmas through Stellar Christmas! This program will incorporate favorite Bible Memory Buddies and music from Stellar VBS. The Christmas story will be retold by members of the starry host who were twinkling away the night Jesus was born. Rehearsals will be December 10 and December 17 at 10:30 am in Room F. We will have a final dress rehearsal on Saturday, December 23, at 9:00 am in the Sanctuary. There will be speaking parts and non-speaking parts. All ages are welcome! It’s that time of year to start thinking and praying about being a Prayer Partner. Please consider being part of this ministry and walk alongside a child in his or her faith journey. Five adults are needed for this. You are committing to pray for and with your partner, and the children commit to pray for you as well. Our special needs ministry, called Super Friends, will meet on December 3 and January 7, from 10:30 am to 11:15 am, in the lower level of our SW Campus. Are you interested in being on the 2024 VBS planning committee? We are starting our journey to VBS in early March. (Yes! It’s that early!) The VBS planning committee heads up the other VBS teams: Imagination Station (science gadgets and experiments), games, Bible Adventure (a hands-on way to tell the Bible story), Sticky Scripture (This all-new rotation station is where kids learn to apply the daily Bible Verse to real life−their life!), snacks, preschool, and decorating. January Series Monday, January 15 - Friday, February 2 10:30 AM - SW SANCTUARY The January Series will begin on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, January 15, with a lecture by Lerone Martin, an associate professor of religious studies at Stanford University. That is followed the next day by a composer, Dan Tepfer, whose performances incorporate musical improvisation and computer programming. Next, we’ll hear Robert George, a lawyer who will discuss “Religious Liberty and Human Good.” This is just the beginning of three weeks of timely and stimulating lectures on a variety of subjects by authorities in their fields of expertise. From January 15 through February 2, this award winning series from Calvin University in Grand Rapids, MI, will be available in the comfort of your own home on Zoom and in the St. Andrew’s Sanctuary with other enthusiastic viewers. The lectures begin at 10:30 am in this time zone and end in one hour, 11:30 am. Refreshments will be served and a time for discussion follows the presentation. Care Giving Tips From Your Faith Community Nurses Most caregiving is done by the person’s family and if that were to stop, USA would have a national crisis. There is no playbook for caregiving since every situation is different. Many times the situation is overwhelming and the caregiver may need help in identifying their needs and where to ask for help. It is important to know community resources. The following are some in the Tucson area: • • • • •
Pima Council on Aging - Offers classes on caregiving skills, financial management and understanding certain diseases like Dementia and Parkinson’s. Interfaith Community Service - Transportation, short term respite, financial management, food bank, End of Life classes. SAPC Gallery Artists DIANE ENSIGN December 3, 2023 - January 14, 2024 About the Artist
Diane’s photography has been marketed and displayed in local and nationally known galleries, stores, professional and corporate offices. She has given many slide presentations, lectures, and art shows to the public, private groups, photo clubs, schools and universities. Diane’s professional career began when few women were photographers & there was no photoshop, cell phones, digital, computers or auto focus, just roll film with negatives or transparencies. You never knew if you got your “shot” until you got your film back from the drug or camera store. There were no review or delete buttons, so you had to know how to use your limited camera. Diane’s commercial photography included portraits of people, pets, weddings, interiors, sports, company brochures, and portfolios. She taught privately and
through the Flathead College Elderhostel and Glacier Institute programs. Diane’s love of nature and adventure is seen through her wildlife and nature photography. Her photos have won numerous awards and been extensively published in numerous magazines, books, calendars, newspapers, postcard and greeting card companies. Among just a few to name are: National Geographic Society; National Wildlife; Arizona Highways; Colorado-AlaskaMontana Magazines; Frontier Airlines-Horizon AirRepublic Airlines Magazines; Brown Trout and Willow Creek Press calendars; Powder Ski-Sailing-Sierra Club Magazines, etc. Note from Diane: I was so blessed to have had my career successes in much earlier years. I do not use today’s modern technological advancements in photo equipment and editing programs like photo shop, Light Room, etc. in my photographs. I do have a digital SLR ancient camera though with a very short telephoto so I have to be very close to my wildlife and still not disturb them.
RACHEL IVANYI Do You See What I See? The Magical Realism of Rachel Ivanyi January 21 - February 25, 2024 About the Artist Rachel Ivanyi is an award-winning contemporary nature artist, illustrator, and art educator. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology from the University of California, Davis, and a Graduate Certification in Natural Science Illustration from the University of California, Santa Cruz. As a Signature Member of Artists for Conservation, her art lives in the hope that people look closer, feel deeper, and make positive changes in their lives and in the lives of others. Her work has been featured in solo, two-person, and group exhibitions, with many of her paintings appearing throughout the U.S. and internationally, as part of permanent museum collections, and in numerous private collections. Her illustration clients include National Geographic, Scientific American, Monterey Bay Aquarium, the Smithsonian, and nature institutions around the world. Rachel has also taught a wide variety of art classes as a core instructor for the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum Art Institute, in her beloved desert home of Tucson, Arizona, for over 20 years. She is represented by Keep Contemporary in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Pastor Transition The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) call process reflects the way our ministry is governed today. Our church polity is representative, and this form of government is seen throughout the call process. Learn more about the PC(USA) and the call process at pcusa.org. The SAPC Pastor Nominating Committee has been hard at work for months in this process and are continuing to Review and Receive PDP Referrals and conducting interviews with potential candidates.
