Englewood Roots, Local Leader: Carolyn at Pope Insurance

Carolyn is a true Englewood native, raised in her grandparents’ house in Englewood, right next door to Lemon Bay Fisheries and

Seafood Market, which was owned by her grandparents, Stuart and Starr Anderson.

Life took a turn when she got into skydiving. That’s how she met Larry, her instructor, and soon enough, her husband.

Atlanta winters didn’t suit them at all, so in 1977 Carolyn and Larry packed up, headed back

to sunny Englewood where they had two children, Kristin and Brian.

Carolyn took a job with an insurance agency, and she never looked back. Insurance turned out to be a perfect match for her background in education and her desire to help people. These days, Carolyn and Brian own Pope Insurance Agency, and together, they’re proud to serve their community.

What is your idea of perfect happiness? Prior to Hurricane Milton, it would be beach, boat, and water time…. Quiet and sunny, not too hot, with a gentle breeze, floating on or in the water, sitting on the sand, where everything in the world feels right! Now…. It is being back in my home, peacefully enjoying my family and my life in my own surroundings.

What is your greatest fear? I do not live in fear, but the closest thing I can think of is that I do not want to drown. I hear that is a peaceful, easy way to go, but I do not want it!

What is the trait you most deplore in yourself? Negative self-talk. I try to nip it in the bud!

What is the trait you most deplore in others? I feel badly when I see people stuck in their own downward spiral of victimization, where everything is “someone else’s fault.”

What is your greatest extravagance? Travel. I love it! New adventures, food, and seeing God’s beautiful world.

Friday and 10am to 1pm on Saturday. Shoppers can browse a wide selection of fiction and nonfiction titles, including books by bestselling authors, and fill a bag for just $5.

Book Donations

The Friends of the Englewood Charlotte Library are accepting donations of gently used fiction paperback and hardcover books for sale in the library book store. Proceeds from book sales support the organization’s scholarship fund, which awards $2,000 scholarships to two Lemon Bay High School graduates each year. Donations may be dropped off at the book store inside the Englewood Charlotte Library Monday through Friday from 10am to 4pm and Saturday from 10am to 1pm

At the end of January, Sweethearts, the folks behind those tiny, pastel hearts everyone grabs in February, rolled out a bunch of new sayings. They’re leaning right into the realities of modern dating, and it feels spot-on. Evan Brock, Spangler Candy Company’s VP of marketing, put it plainly: Sweethearts always tries to keep up with the times, and these days, being practical is in. So, not every message this year is about oldschool, head-over-heels love.

How’d they land on these new phrases? The team dug into some research and found out nearly three-quarters of Americans want cheaper date options in 2026, no surprise considering 80% say the economy is messing with their Valentine’s Day plans. With that in mind, Sweethearts went all-in on a “Love in This Economy” theme. Now, you’ll see hearts stamped with things like “SPLIT RENT,” “SHARE LOGN,” “CARPOOL,” “BUY N BULK,” and “COOK FOR 2.” Honestly, they nail the vibe right now.

Don’t worry, though. The old favorites are still available. You can dig through the box and find “CUTIE PIE,” “LOVE BUG,” and “MARRY ME.” Some things never change.

Even More Heart-Shaped Treats

Sweethearts aren’t the only game in town for the big day-of-love, you can’t miss the heart-shaped treats this year. Pizza Hut’s rolling out big heart-shaped pizzas now through February 18th. Craving something sweet? Dunkin’ Donuts has special heart-shaped donuts for the season: Brownie Batter, Cupid’s Choice, and jelly, but blink and they’re gone. Hardee’s in Fort Myers jumps in, too, serving up heartshaped breakfast biscuits until the 14th.

So, whether you want traditional or non-traditional Sweethearts, pizza, donuts, or biscuits, there is no shortage of heart-shaped snacks to show your love this Valentine’s Day.

SHORE & KAYAK FISHING SHORE & KAYAK FISHING

Fishing Gear for Kayaks

Think small and minimal when choosing kayak fishing gear. The first change will be from a big tackle box to a small tackle bag that carries only what you really need. We both have two small bags for tackle and tools: one for saltwater trips and another for freshwater. There are some tools common to each bag, but having duplicates eliminates transferring them from bag to bag for different trips, so we end up forgetting less stuff. The tools in both bags include long-nose pliers, a de-hooking

device [catfish flipper], serrated scissors for braid, a small lip gripper for controlling toothy fish, a small knife for cutting bait, and a stringer [metal clips on nylon rope type].

Small spools of 20 and 40 lb. fluorocarbon leader and a short length of tie-able wire leader for mackerel are in other pockets along with popping corks, extra hooks, swivels, and split shot weights.

We organize these bags with plastic boxes. For saltwater, there’s one plastic box for jig

heads in various weights and colors, with soft plastic shad tails (paddle tails) in natural colors. A second box holds artificial shrimp in various colors [measles is our favorite] although white and clear work well. We also make room for a small fly box since we both like to cast a Clouser or shrimp fly at schools of feeding fish.

The freshwater bag also has plastic boxes. One that organizes plastic worms, bullet weights, and hooks, and another for plastic frog lures and wide-gap 5/0 hooks for them. Be advised that many of the new tougher plastics will dissolve other lures and the boxes they’re in if not kept in their special packaging. Fly casters should also pack a small fly box with popping bugs, foam spiders, and other favorite flies for bass and panfish. We are not fans of treble hook lures in a kayak. They cause

damage to fish we release, plus the length of time it takes to release them makes mortality an issue. Beyond that, the thought of having one treble attached to a thrashing fish and another treble hooked in us is too scary. When we use hard-body lures, we modify them to only have one single hook. Stay safe and have fun!

We use two-piece spinning rods in the 6’-7’ range that break down when paddling through mangroves, under bridges, or on small creeks. Our 2000-size reels are loaded with 10 lb. braid and 2 ft. of 20 lb. fluorocarbon. It’s light tackle for this area, which allows for long casts with light lures in shallow water. Yes, we lose some fish, but each lost fish makes a great “one that got away” story. For fly enthusiasts, we recommend a 9’ two-piece 8 weight rod with floating weight forward line and 8 ft. of tapered 1X leader is our default rig. We usually add a 12” bite tippet of 20 lb. fluorocarbon’s leader too. Keep all your reels elevated above the deck with rod holders to avoid a saltwater soaking. Of course, you’ll want a small soft-sided cooler for beverages and snacks and a dry bag to carry your personal items and foulweather gear. This time of year, include a warm fleece for loading the kayaks as the sun sets. Don’t forget bug repellent and first-aid items. We wear long-sleeved

shirts and protective hats and gloves to protect us from the sun, and we recommend 50+ lotion on any exposed skin. We pay particular attention to the tops of our feet when kayaking and on the beach.

These are just a few basics we want to share with folks who are joining the growing number of kayak anglers in southwest Florida. Check out our waterproof guide for more launches, tackle suggestions, riggings, tactics and techniques that can quickly help you become a successful and safe kayak angler in Southwest Florida. www.anglerpocketguides.com

In the next article, we’ll look at favorite local launches and ways to time the tides and winds for a great kayak angling trip in SWFL.

Kimball and Les Beery, authors of Angler’s Guide to SHORE and KAYAK Fishing Southwest Florida, contribute these excerpts from both WATERPROOF books to promote the excellent fishing available in the Englewood area. Englewood Senior Softball 2026 Season Underway

The Englewood Men’s Senior Softball League started the 2026 Winter season with a bang in January with over fifty players added to teams via the entry draft. The league now has over 300 players across three levels of play.

“Our league has a great reputation throughout the Suncoast”, stated Scott Maresh, league commissioner. “We draw players from Nokomis down through Punta Gorda.” Most players are from Englewood and Port Charlotte, with increasing numbers from the Wellen Park area. The typical new player

hasn’t played organized softball in a while but quickly gets back in the swing of things with some practice.

The league holds the primary entry draft during the first week of January to accommodate snowbirds’ arrival, and a supplemental secondary draft occurs after teams complete their first seven games. This year, Rafael Gonzalez was the first player taken in the Gold division draft by The End Zone Sports Bar. Burt Rood was the first player taken in the Silver division by Porter Contracting.

Games have been underway for a few weeks, despite the cold weather, with one third of the season in the books. The Gold division has seen several big bat additions to the rosters, with 29 home runs hit at the seven-game mark.

“We typically see one, maybe two big hitters in the draft, but this year there are five draftees that have joined the home run–‘dingers’ club. I expect a few more may join,” per Rudy Davis, draft coordinator. Likewise, the Bronze division has hit 9 home runs in just 5 games. Marsh thinks it’s going to be one of the best years yet competition-wise. The league is open to all men 60 years of age and older, and each team plays 21 or more games from early January through March. “We also have a Spring and Fall season, and occasionally a Summer season

as well,” said Maresh. For more information about the league and how to register to join, visit

the league’s website at www. englewoodseniorsoftball.weebly. com.

What began as a simple neighborhood idea has grown into one of South Gulf Cove’s most anticipated annual events.

The 6th Annual SGC CCT Furry Scurry 5K Walk/Run will take place on Saturday, February 21, welcoming more than 400 participants for a morning centered on community spirit and support for animals.

Founded in 2021 by Mark and Marcia Vaccaro after adopting a rescue German Shepherd, the event was created to raise awareness for the Conservancy and Community Trust of South Gulf Cove, while supporting animal charities. Since its first year, the Furry Scurry has expanded from benefiting four organizations to eight, including EARS, Suncoast Humane Society, and SWFL German Shepherd Rescue.

Now a regional fundraiser drawing participants from across Florida and beyond, the event will surpass $100,000 donated in 2026, with all proceeds going directly to animal charities.

Former Boat Saleswoman Finds Purpose in Englewood

Kathi Obendorfer Shares Passion for Englewood through Real Estate, Giving Back

Real estate didn’t bring Kathi Obendorfer to Englewood.

For years, Kathi spent a great deal of time traversing the United States and Canada as a boat manufacturer sales representative. Seeing the highs and lows of every major city in the United States, she knew that lifestyle wasn’t for her.

In 2008, Kathi was living in Wesley Chapel, Florida, when one of her dealers introduced her to Englewood — a coastal, yet laid back community nourished by abounding kindness, a viable economy focused on familyowned and local businesses, and thoughtful, but not rampant, progress.

It was love at first sight. Making the connection immediately, one of the dealers had a relative in local real estate. On her second visit to Englewood, she toured a Manasota Key home for sale and sealed the deal on the same day. Englewood felt right.

FINDING A PURPOSE

Nestled in her comfortable abode, Kathi’s travel-heavy career as a boat sales representative resumed as normal.

Meanwhile, Kathi naturally took her residency one step further and started to volunteer her time and efforts for the betterment of the community. She joined the Manasota Key Association board and kept an active pulse on beach nourishment and other local issues.

She currently serves as president of Old Englewood Village, was recently nominated as president of her homeowner’s association, and remains active in her church as a lector and Eucharistic minister.

“No matter where I am, I like to give back and help make it the best place it can be,” Kathy says.

ABILITY TO PIVOT

In 2008, the stock market crashed and a nationwide economic downturn in the housing market and financial sector began to unfold, known as the Great Recession.

During the years to follow, many luxury markets such as the boating industry saw rapidly declining sales and widespread bankruptcies. Kathi had to pivot.

In 2013, she looked to real estate for her next career jump and secured her license. Her next step would be to find a brokerage firm, but like many experienced during the Great Recession, employment was hard to find.

“It was hard. Even though I was very experienced in communication, negotiation and building relationships, no one would hire me,” she says.

“So I decided to start my own business.”

PURPOSE-DRIVEN SUCCESS

Kathi O Group launched in September of 2013 with a great deal of success to follow over the next decade.

She credits her success to one simple philosophy: loving where she lives and putting people first. Real estate isn’t about transactions, it’s about helping people find permanence, safety and a sense of home.

This is exactly what she found when she met Englewood.

ENGLEWOOD APPEAL

People who are navigating major life transitions — relocations, downsizing or selling family homes through probate — need a real estate agent they can count on.

Working exclusively in Englewood, Kathi O Group has been the backbone for many clients over the last decade.

“Not everyone understands the real estate process. People need

someone they can trust to lead them through it,” Kathi says. “Every transaction is different and every one of them matters.”

Steadfast in her people-first commitment, Kathi says buying or selling homes is one of the biggest investments people make, and it deserves ethical and careful handling.

Very few people Kathi has ever met regret choosing Englewood as their forever home, she says.

Her advice for future clients looking to experience the same Englewood she’s known and loved: “Live in a place you want to come back to when you travel — that’s how you know you’re home.”

To reach Kathi O Group, call 941-208-5246. The office is located at 170 W. Dearborn St. Unit B, Englewood, Florida, 34223.
