Police Investigate Suspicious Device Found in Vehicle at Alturas Garden Apartments

Alturas Elementary Students Boost Fire Safety Skills with CAL FIRE

Alturas Police Department are investigating a suspicious device found inside a vehicle at the Garden Apartments, authorities said.

Officers responded to a report of a possible explosive device about the vehicle at the apartment complex at 310 E. McDowell Ave. on Feb. 1, according to the Alturas Police Department.

Police said officers located a device and a note referencing a possible explosion. A deputy with the Modoc County Sheriff’s Office, who has ordinance experience from the military, responded to assess the device. After assessing the situation, investigators determined the device was not capable of exploding and posed no actual threat, though it appeared it was intended to intimidate the vehicle’s owner.

According to the vehicle owner, Jamie Aminsworth, the top of her convertible was cut, and a homemade, cylinder-shaped device with a note reading “BOOM” was dropped inside. She described the device as having wax on one end and metal pellets on the other, with a powdery substance found inside. Aminsworth also reported a small hole in the device. No wick or wires were observed. The device was sent for further evaluation.

Vehicle Crashes Into Alturas Thrift Store

Veterans Day guide to honor local service members

A vehicle crashed through the front window of His & Hers Attic, a local consignment and thrift store at 231 N. Main St., on Saturday, Jan. 31. Shortly after 8 p.m. The vehicle came to rest inside the building.

Veterans Day is a time for reflection, gratitude and community. This November, Modoc Record is preparing a special guide dedicated to honoring the men and women who have served in the nation’s armed forces.

The crash broke a water main, and Public Works crews responded to shut off the water. Authorities said a gasoline odor was coming from the vehicle. A portion of South Main Street was temporarily closed, and traffic control was established while crews worked at the scene.

According to first responders, the female driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was transported by ambulance to Modoc Medical Center.

The most dangerous thing in the world is being next to a trained combat veteran with severe PTSD during a psychotic break. At Modoc Medical Center, safeguards are not in place to safely care for these patients for a three-day stay. No one is available that speaks the same language. For a veteran in crisis who is hurt, scared and freaking out inside, it is torture. Every time one of these veterans is put on a mental health hold at the Modoc Medical Center in the ER with no security, it puts the entire hospital and veteran in harm’s way. Something needs to change.

Dear Editor,

Right upfront let me say that my lady love (my bride Jill) and I are in our mid-70s. We raised 6 kids and we have 4 granddaughters. We are not only pro-children, we are dog lovers. We’ve had several dogs over the decades, our last one was our beloved Beagle Lilee that we had to have put down in 2024 due to her cancer. Jill and I vowed to each other that in spite of our love for dogs, at our ages and the fact we do a lot of traveling, it would be selfish and cruel to have another dog.

So, back in December during a torrential rain storm here in Modoc County, an abandoned dog showed up on our property, soaking wet and starving. She’s a gorgeous dog, probably a mix of herding breed and German Shepherd. A very sweet, loving pooch. The kind of dog that would be great for a young family with kids. We started feeding it and made a bed for it on our covered porch. It’s been hanging out here ever since. We’ve tried to find it a permanent loving home to no avail. Oh, yeah, we get lots of likes on Jill’s Facebook account when Jill has asked if anyone might have a home for the dog, but all those “alleged” dog lovers never follow through. So now we are faced with having a beautiful, young, sweet pooch euthanized. The next time I read or hear that someone claims they love dogs here in Modoc County I just might laugh or puke!!

American Legion post 163 Hosts Four Chaplans’ Day Service

American Legion Post 163 will host an Interdenominational Four Chaplains Day Program on Tuesday, February 3rd at 7 pm at the Veterans Memorial Hall, located at 508 South Main St, Alturas. Four Chaplains’ Day celebrates the four Chaplains serving on the U.S. Dorchester when it was torpedoed on February 3, 1943 off the coast of Greenland. They worked together to help save 230 of the 902 who were on the ship that day, sacrificing their own lives in the process.

The story of the Dorchester and talks in memory of each Chaplain will be given.

Coffee and cookies will be served following the program. The program is free and open to everyone. Donations will be collected to send to the Four Chaplains Memorial Foundation in Philadelphia, Pa.

Adjutant Linda Newman says, “We hope that if you have not attended this event

previously you gave serious thought to coming out this year. I believe it is important to remember and honor those who are willing to sacrifice their lives for their fellow man.”

The Story of the Four Chaplains

On the evening of Feb. 2, 1943, USAT Dorchester was crowded to capacity, carrying 902 U.S. troops, merchant seamen and civilian workers.

Once a luxury coastal liner, the 5,649-ton vessel had been converted into an Army transport ship. Dorchester, one of three ships in the SG-19 convoy, was moving steadily across the icy waters from Newfoundland toward a U.S. base in Greenland.

Coast Guard cutters Tampa, Escanaba and Comanche escorted the convoy.

Hans Danielsen, the ship’s captain, was concerned and cautious. Earlier, Tampa had detected a submarine with its sonar. Danielsen knew he was in dangerous

waters even before he got the report. German U-boats were constantly prowling these vital sea lanes, and several ships had already been sunk.

Dorchester was now only 150 miles from its destination, but the captain ordered the men to sleep in their clothing and keep life jackets on. Many soldiers sleeping deep in the ship’s hold disregarded the order because of the engine’s heat. Others ignored it because the life jackets were uncomfortable.

On Feb. 3, at 12:55 a.m., a periscope broke the chilly Atlantic waters. Through the cross hairs, an officer aboard U-223 spotted Dorchester. After identifying and targeting the ship, he gave orders to fire a fan of three torpedoes. The one that hit was decisive and deadly, striking the starboard side, amidship, far below the water line.

Alerted that Dorchester was sinking rapidly, Danielsen gave the order to abandon ship. In fewer than 20

minutes, Dorchester would slip beneath the Atlantic’s icy waters.

Tragically, the hit had knocked out power and radio contact with the three escort ships. Tampa, however, saw the flash of the explosion. It responded and rescued 97 survivors. Escanaba circled Dorchester, rescuing an additional 133 survivors (one died later). Comanche continued on, escorting the remaining two ships.

Aboard Dorchester, panic and chaos had set in. The blast had killed scores of men, and many more were seriously wounded. Others, stunned by the explosion, were groping in darkness.

Those sleeping without clothing rushed topside, where they were confronted first by a blast of icy Arctic air and then the knowledge that death awaited.

Men jumped from the ship into lifeboats, overcrowding them to the point of capsizing, according to eyewitnesses.

Other rafts, tossed into the Atlantic, drifted away before soldiers could get into them.

In the midst of the pandemonium, according to those present, four Army chaplains brought hope in despair and light in darkness: Lt. George L. Fox, a Methodist minister; Lt. Alexander D. Goode, a Jewish rabbi; Lt. John P. Washington, a Roman Catholic priest; and Lt. Clark V. Poling, a Dutch Reformed minister.

Quickly and quietly, the four chaplains spread out among the soldiers. They tried to calm the frightened, tend the wounded, and guide the disoriented toward safety. “Witnesses of that terrible night remember hearing the four men offer prayers for the dying and encouragement for those who would live,” said Wyatt Fox, son of Reverend Fox.

One witness, Pvt. William Bednar, found himself floating in oil-smeared water

The rabbi then gave the petty officer his own gloves. Later, Mahoney realized that Goode hadn’t been carrying two pairs of gloves, and that the chaplain had decided not to leave Dorchester.

If no street address or other common designation is shown, directions to the location of the property may be obtained by sending a written request to the beneficiary within 10 days of the date of first publication of this Notice of Sale. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call or (888) 902-3989 or visit these internet websites or www.nestortrustee. com, using the file number assigned to this case 202515755-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale.

the tragedy and the heroic conduct of the four chaplains.

“Valor is a gift,” Carl Sandburg once said. “Those having it never know for sure whether they have it until the test comes.”

That night, Rev. Fox, Rabbi Goode, Rev. Poling and Father Washington passed life’s ultimate test. In doing so, they became an enduring example of extraordinary faith, courage and selflessness.

In 1944, the Distinguished Service Cross and Purple Heart were awarded posthumously to the chaplains’ next of kin, and in 1961, President Eisenhower awarded a special Medal for Heroism, a one-time award authorized by Congress and intended to have the same weight and importance as the Medal of Honor.
