Modoc High School Athletic Director Rafael Sevilla praised the team’s postseason run.

“I think their run is one that this community should not take for granted,” Sevilla said. “What these girls are doing is special and will leave a mark on our school and community. They continue to work hard each day, and have been for many years.”

Veterans Day is a time for reflection, gratitude and community. This November, Modoc Record is preparing a special guide dedicated to honoring the men and women who have served in the nation’s armed forces.

Veterans Day is not only about honoring the past — it’s about recognizing the ongoing contributions of veterans in our neighborhoods, workplaces and families.

Modoc pulled down 22 rebounds, including 11 by Erquiaga, and finished with six steals and five blocked shots. The Braves went 3 of 9 from the free-throw line and committed 10 turnovers.

“Our cheerleaders and band brought the energy, pride and Brave spirit that defined this playoff run,” she said. “Thank you, Modoc, for loving our kids out loud. You showed up with heart, pride and unwavering support, and helped make this playoff run something our students will carry with them for the rest of their lives.”

Modoc High School Principal Kristen Budmark praised the team and the community support during the playoff run.

The guide aims to provide both inspiration and practical resources, ensuring local stories of courage and commitment are remembered and celebrated.

The Lady Braves played their final home game of the season Tuesday night with a berth in the state championship game on the line. Modoc fell to defending Division V state champion Woodland Christian 49-36. Modoc struggled to find an offensive rhythm, shooting 12 of 55 (22%) from the field and 3 of 22 (14%) from 3-point range.

“This playoff run was bigger than basketball — it was heart, grit and unity on full display,” Budmark said. “Our Lady Braves gave our community something powerful to believe in, and our Brave Family could not be more proud of the

Sevilla also reflected on the program’s growth.

“They have left their mark at this school,” Sevilla said. “Coach Albright and Coach Weber have built this program from scratch and guided us to three straight state playoff appearances, along with a league and section title. We have come a long way.”

Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor,

Ok, I’m going to ask the proverbial rhetorical question because I think I already know the answer to it, and that answer involves funding, or lack thereof.

My beloved wife and I live 4 miles north of the little village known as Lookout. We are living the proverbial dream here at our forested retreat. However, every summer as is the norm for most of Modoc County we have to endure swarms of mosquitoes and yellow jackets. The yellow jackets are relatively easy to deal with because we put out multiple yellow jacket traps and I spray a deadly contact neurotoxin around our place daily that does a good job on the yellow jackets. The mosquitoes are a wholly different matter.

We are not even officially into spring and the mosquitoes are already swarming because we live only two miles from a water fowl refuge where mosquitoes breed with abandon, and Mother Nature has been fooled this year by early warm weather. This is the first year in the past six years that mosquitoes have arrived this early, so it looks like this is going to be a bumper crop year for those little blood suckers.

So here’s my rhetorical question: Why doesn’t Modoc County do serious mosquito abatement? Is the County waiting for the local mosquitoes to be infected with the West Nile virus so that we’re all at risk of getting very sick? Is Modoc County’s official policy one of closing the barn door after the horses have run away? Is this too intelligent a question?

Note: Still Local, Reaching Further

Over the past few months, a few readers have asked why the Modoc County Record sometimes covers stories happening just outside our county—places like Lassen County or other parts of northeastern California. It’s a fair question, and one we’re happy to talk about.

Dear Editor,

Shasta County, and parts of Siskiyou. We also see strong readership in southern Oregon—particularly around Klamath Falls and Lakeview—as well as in northern Nevada.

My wife and I just mailed off our ballots for the oneissue special election that will determine whether or not Modoc County and the other few far north counties are robbed of our political voices in Sacramento. The short answer is simple: the Record has grown.

Through our website, social media, and email newsletters, the newspaper has quietly become a source of news and information not just for Modoc County, but for much of the rural corridor across northeastern California and even into neighboring states. Readers now regularly follow the Record from Lassen and Plumas counties, eastern

That doesn’t mean the Record is any less local. In fact, it means the opposite. It means the stories, businesses, and people of Modoc County are now being seen by far more people than ever before.

VFW and Auxiliary Members Volunteer at TEACH Food Distribution

Officers and members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and the VFW Auxiliary of Alturas recently volunteered their time to help TEACH, Inc. distribute food to community members in need.

Service to the community has long been part of the mission of the VFW. Across the country, VFW members volunteer thousands of hours each year supporting local projects such as food banks, community events, youth programs, and outreach to veterans and families facing hardship.

The VFW Auxiliary works alongside these efforts, partnering with community organizations to provide volunteer support for hospitals, food distribution programs, and charitable activities that strengthen local communities.

By assisting with the TEACH, Inc. food distribution, local VFW and Auxiliary volunteers continue their tradition of service—demonstrating their commitment to helping neighbors and supporting those in need.

MODOC INDIVISIBLE, a Non-Partisan Community Group

MODOC INDIVISIBLE, a non-partisan community group, will host a No Kings 3 event on March 28 in Alturas. A previous No Kings event in October drew millions of participants across the country in peaceful demonstrations held in both small towns and major cities to express concern about the direction of the nation and to support democratic institutions.

Organizers say the gathering is meant to stand in solidarity with communities they believe have been treated unfairly and with families struggling with rising living costs and uncertainty about government policies. Although Modoc County has not seen activity from federal immigration agents locally, some residents say they feel anxious about the broader national climate.

Community members are invited to join a peaceful demonstration from 1:30–3:30 p.m. The event will include singing, snacks, a raffle, sign-designing, and time for participants to share concerns and ideas. Organizers hope to contribute to a nationwide day of civic participation that they say could draw millions of people.

The event will take place at 404 N Court St at the Next Step Studio. Participants are encouraged to bring friends and take part in the community conversation.

Congratulations to Alturas Elementary School’s February Students of the Month! Alturas Elementary would like to recognize these students for their excellent attendance, effort, and behavior! From left to right: Reagan Main (3rd Grade), Briar Schrank (1st Grade), Tinley Keller (4th Grade), MarYsol Marquez (2nd Grade), Hayzel Tieman (3rd Grade), Karter Murphy (5th Grade), Lyric Souza (1st Grade), Faye Stanley (2nd Grade). Not Pictured: Mariela Lopez (4th Grade).

Gone too soon–forever missed! Dion Ray Ditmore passed away unexpectedly on February 28, 2026 at the age of 61. Soon after returning home to Alturas from skiing at Mt Bachelor, Dion suffered a major heart attack, and he passed away a week later at Renown Hospital in Reno, Nevada.

Born July 23, 1964 in Prineville, Oregon, Dion was preceded in death by his parents, Jeannie Porter McNay and Dennis Ray Ditmore, grandparents Millard and Mary (Pat) Porter, and sister Shawna Chavez. He is survived by his wife Donna Ditmore & Jazzy (their beloved Golden Retriever), sister Katrina Walker, niece Alysha Waite, nephew Bryce Walker, brother-in-law Clay Walker, step-father Bob McNay, and close members of the Porter family: Jim and Mary, Drew, Suzanne, and Perry.

Dion graduated from Modoc High in 1983 and joined the

United States Marine Corps in 1986, where he served proudly until 1993. Once a Marine, always a Marine–Semper Fi! As an adult, Dion worked in a variety of careers, including security work in Dallas TX, plumbing in Alturas (until his knees couldn’t take it anymore), and then he found a calling that was so much more than just a “job”.

For the last 16 years, Dion worked as an instructional assistant (mostly at Modoc High) helping students with challenges to learn, face adversity, and be successful in life. He approached his “job” with the same attitude he had in life–humor, caring, patience, and love. I want all of Dion’s students to know how much he cared about you. Please carry on like he is right there looking over your shoulder, because he is.

Dion loved life with passion, and he would want to be remembered for the things that bring a smile to your face. Out in the woods hunting, camping and enjoying the outdoors. Shooting pool or playing ping-pong. Watching the Dallas Cowboys and staying loyal even as they continue to lose. Smoking and BBQing meats and loving it when people rave about the food. And last but not least, fishing! Whether catching fish from a high mountain lake or landing a massive lingcod from the ocean, he loved it. The smile says it all, and that’s the way he wants you to remember him!

A celebration of life for Dion will take place in Alturas on Sunday afternoon April 26th.

Maezy Smith Represents Modoc County at State Poetry Out Loud Finals

Maezy Smith represented Modoc County at the California Poetry Out Loud state finals held March 8-9 in Sacramento.

The annual competition brought together high school students from 49 counties across the state to compete in the 21st annual event.

Poetry Out Loud is a national program of the National Endowment for the Arts administered statewide by the California Arts Council. The program encourages high school students to learn about poetry through memorization and performance.

Participants begin competing in classroom contests, with winners advancing to schoolwide competitions. School champions then move on to county contests, and county winners advance to the state finals.

The state competition began Sunday with two rounds of recitations at the Jean Runyon Little Theatre in downtown Sacramento. On Monday, county champions visited the state Capitol to meet legislators, receive certificates of achievement and compete in the final round of performances.

Smith selected three poems to recite: “Afternoon on a Hill” by Edna St. Vincent Millay, “Before a Painting” by James Weldon Johnson, and “The Ocean” by Nathaniel Hawthorne.

“Poetry and the arts give us opportunities to express ourselves in unconventional ways that can convey more than simple words could ever do,” Smith said.

More than 13,500 students and 400 teachers from more than 200 schools participated in California’s Poetry Out Loud program this year.

The California state champion receives a $200 cash prize, $500 for their school to purchase literary materials and an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., where they compete in the national finals April 27-29 for college scholarship funds.

In addition to the recitation contest, the California Arts Council also hosts Poetry Ourselves, a companion program in which county champions may submit an original poem of 50 lines or fewer. Entries are judged anonymously by a panel of literary professionals. The winner receives $100, and the top poems are published on the California Poetry Out Loud website.

California’s Poetry Out Loud program is the largest event of its kind in the United States.

Modoc Youth Research Thirdhand Smoke

In February, youth leaders in the Medicine Wheel Project, a Tobacco Use Prevention Education (TUPE) program at Resources for Indian Student Education (RISE), have been raising awareness about the dangers of commercial tobacco use and vaping. They were instrumental in a University of California research study that developed a vape intervention curriculum, and recently teamed with San Diego State University’s Center for Tobacco and the Environment (CTE) to assess nicotine residue in selected locations.

CTE is statewide group of youth leaders engaged in research to educate peers and the wider community about impacts of nicotine. Thirdhand smoke is different from first- or secondhand smoke, which is either inhaled or exhaled by a smoker. It is a toxic residue that adheres to surfaces and remains in the air long after the smoke/vapor clears. CTE developed protocols and specialized test kits to measure thirdhand smoke in school bathrooms.

Lisa Craig, Culture Advisor, and a Youth Advocate Team (YAT) collaborated with both school districts in Modoc County to identify five bathrooms for testing. Iiyan Nahbahe-Henry, Surprise Valley School eighth-grader, collected data at her school. An Alturas team of six-graders, Faith Fabela, Blaze Pisco, and Samuel Anguiano tested sites at Modoc Middle School, the Niles Theatre and Rubio’s Tacos.

Craig cited Truth Initiative research on the harm of nicotine and current e-cigarette use by youth, stating, “In 2024, over a million and a half middle and high schoolers were vaping. Nicotine can increase stress, depression and anxiety. It makes youth susceptible to addiction, and nicotine can negatively impact their brain development.”

Fabela explained that YAT leaders led all aspects of data collection, stating, “We started with research training and we picked the sites to where we collected data with the test kits.”

The CTE test kits contained silicone wristbands that measured airborne nicotine over seven days. Anguiano said, “We hung up wristbands so they weren’t seen in the bathrooms. Those got nicotine vapors from the air.”

Nahbahe-Henry reported, “I

monitored air samples every day for a week at my school. We all labeled and color coded the samples to match with each bathroom we selected.”

“Testing was done by swabbing bathroom surfaces and the wristbands with special kit wipes. That was done to collect any nicotine that was there.”, explained Pisco.

Vape use continues to be a major concern among youth and young adults. More and more discreet vape products enter the market every day, designed to camouflage as common household items, video game objects, toys, and school supplies. Vaping is viewed as an epidemic with flashy colors and enticing flavors of e-cigarettes

that contain harmful chemicals to result in nicotine addiction.

All site test kits performed by the YAT were returned to CTE for analysis. The findings will be provided to RISE in a report detailing nicotine levels in each bathroom this April.
