Modoc County officials are warning residents to remain alert following reports of gray wolf activity in the area. Authorities said members of the public should not approach a wolf if encountered and should avoid turning their back, crouching or running. Instead, people are advised to make themselves appear larger and make loud noises, such as shouting or banging objects together, to deter the animal. Officials recommend reporting any wolf encounters to the Modoc County Sheriff’s Office once it is safe to do so. Sightings or signs of wolf activity in residential or rural residential areas,

An aggressive wolf poses a serious public safety threat and should be treated as an emergency, officials said. Residents are urged to protect their families, move to a safe location and call 911 if there is an immediate danger. For non-emergency reports, the Modoc County Sheriff’s Office can be reached at 530233-4416
