L & B Sunflower Outfitters Opens, Rooted in a Legacy of Kindness

Alturas Elementary Students Boost Fire Safety Skills with CAL FIRE

After months of preparation, L&B Sunflower Outfitters, 212 S. Main St., opened to the community April 1.

For owners ShawnTay Lafferty, Adam Lafferty and Jessica Brimble, the business is more than a retail store. While it offers clothing, shoes and sports gear, its purpose is rooted in serving the community and continuing a legacy of love.

The idea for the store came together quickly, with the goal of creating a place that meets local needs. The Laffertys invited their friend Brimble to join as a business partner, combining ShawnTay Lafferty’s eye for design with Brimble’s creativity.

The CAL FIRE Lassen Modoc Unit, in collaboration with the Modoc Fire Safe Council and Alturas Elementary School, recently led a vital Fire Prevention Week program for local students. Focusing on this year’s theme, “Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home,” students received handson training inside the

The store aims to provide families with affordable access to essential items without the need to travel long distances, pay high costs or wait for shipping. It offers sports gear for local youth, as well as clothing and shoes for children, men and women. The store also carries baby clothes, custom onesies, toys, accessories and hospital scrubs.

This community-focused initiative, shared by the CAL FIRE Lassen Modoc

Behind the business is Addie’s Sunflowers Play It Forward Foundation, which essentially owns the store. Proceeds from sales support programs, operating expenses and inventory.

The foundation was created in honor of Addilynne “Addie” Schibbelhut, who was known for her generosity and belief that every child deserves to feel included, supported and loved.

Unit, shows the strong commitment to public safety education, ensuring younger residents understand critical fire prevention measures. By teaching these crucial lessons at an early age, the program helps build safer communities through increased awareness and preparedness. Residents are encouraged to follow the CAL FIRE

Veterans Day guide to honor local service members

Inventory is sourced from liquidation, overstock, customer returns, mystery boxes and wholesale suppliers. Most items are new with tags and include namebrand clothing and shoes that are otherwise difficult to find locally. Merchandise is sold at affordable prices.

Veterans Day is a time for reflection, gratitude and community. This November, Modoc Record is preparing a special guide dedicated to honoring the men and women who have served in the nation’s armed forces.

Addie loved sunflowers and sports, especially her time on the Pop Warner cheer team. She also showed an early talent for creativity and graphic design. At age 9, she designed hoodies for her teammates and organized sales to support school events with her mother’s help.

organizers provide sports gear to children, assist families with back-to-school needs and supply foster children with emergency bags filled with clothing, hygiene products and comfort items.

“That’s what Addie would’ve done,” Lafferty said.

Unit on social media for ongoing safety tips and community updates.

Now a beloved annual event, the Fire Prevention Week program is something that firefighters, staff, and students alike look forward to each year— an opportunity to learn, connect, and celebrate the shared responsibility of keeping their community safe.

Custom-designed items also are available, including logos, business branding, decals, apparel and one-of-akind designs. The store plans to stock seasonal items such as prom dresses and school supplies, as well as specialty products like hypoallergenic diapers and specialized baby formula.

The guide will feature profiles of local veterans, community events, support resources and ways for residents to get involved. It will be printed and distributed throughout Modoc and Lassen counties. Stories will highlight resilience, sacrifice and

ShawnTay Lafferty said Addie often gave away her own hoodies and shoes to classmates in need.

“Addie had the biggest heart you could imagine,” she said.

leadership, while event listings will provide information on parades, ceremonies and other gatherings. Readers will also find details on organizations offering assistance with health care, education and employment, as well as volunteer opportunities and donation drives.

Addie believed no child should go without, feel different or be left out. One of her favorite quotes was, “Every ounce of hate takes away a mile of love.”

Through the foundation,

Community members are invited to help shape the guide. If you or someone you know has served, Modoc Media encourages you to submit a photo, name and years of service.

The foundation is seeking volunteers and community members interested in getting involved. Open board positions are available, along with a junior board for youth ages 12 and older.

Submissions can be emailed to info@modocmedia.com.

Veterans Day is not only about honoring the past — it’s about recognizing the ongoing contributions of veterans in our neighborhoods, workplaces and families.

Those interested can contact the organization through Facebook, visit the store or apply online at addiessunflowers playitforward.com.

“This is her legacy. This is her love,” Lafferty said. “We’re just here to make sure it keeps growing.”

The guide aims to provide both inspiration and practical resources, ensuring local stories of courage and commitment are remembered and celebrated.

118 Years Ago – 1907

My wife and I just mailed off our ballots for the oneissue special election that will determine whether or not Modoc County and the other few far north counties are robbed of our political voices in Sacramento. The thought of being at the mercy of the far-left coastal population is way beyond unacceptable.

folk who have no idea of the challenges and problems and issues of ranchers, farmers, loggers, and so on. I bet that if a survey was done on the coast that asked where their food comes from they’d think that their food grows on the shelves of grocery stores.

I am writing to proudly endorse Ned Coe for re-election as Modoc County District 1 Supervisor.

Ned is a longtime friend and someone I have had the privilege of working alongside. Through that time, I have witnessed firsthand his dedication, strong work ethic, and unwavering commitment to the people of rural Modoc County. He has consistently proven himself to be a true supporter of our community and our way of life. Ned is well-informed on the local, state, and federal issues that directly impact Modoc County. More importantly, he does not just understand these issues—he actively works to address them and advocate for the residents he serves.

Let me tell you a true story from my childhood on the Monterey Peninsula. At age 10 just after my family moved back to Monterey from Lake Tahoe where we lived for two years while my dad helped develop Squaw Valley for the 1960 Winter Olympics, a family from New York moved in down the street from us. They moved to California because they thought the gold rush was still going on. Yep, I kid you not, that’s how ignorant they were of California history. This little true story applies to the clueless coastal

Sincerely,

William “Tex” Dowdy Modoc County Sheriff-Coroner

If that same hypothetical survey asked coastal folk where the lumber comes from to build their houses they would not be able to answer that question.

THE BOARD of Supervisors has accepted the plans and specs for the $36,000 County High School building. That throws Cedarville’s $10,000 school in the shade, but what we lose in the price of the building is made up in the fill in, as Cedarville has between 60-70 students and Alturas has between 20-30.

Having worked side by side with Ned, I can say with confidence that he puts in the time, effort, and energy necessary to protect and represent our community. His leadership and commitment are exactly what we need to continue moving forward. I wholeheartedly support Ned Coe in his re-election bid for Modoc County District 1 Supervisor.

108 Years Ago – 1917

Some Modoc County folk were born-and-raised here so they had no choice in finding themselves here, but some of us came here from coastal urban areas and we came here to get away from all that madness. My wife and I are not clueless former coastal folk, and we cherish the unique character and issues of Modoc County.

Please vote no on redistricting our state!!

THE MODOC boys who enlisted in the Grizzlies, California’s 2nd Artillery, are making good. Modoc furnished 22 boys, and 13 of them already hold ranks of non-commissioned officers. Such a showing, while remarkable, it is not unexpected in view of the fact that the boys were above the average in physical and mental qualifications.

Local Man Faces Pancreatic Cancer Diagnosis with Determination to Fight

A local man is facing the fight of his life with courage, honesty, and unwavering determination.

Jimmy Reese, known to friends and family as a hardworking and devoted husband, spent years taking pride in his independence. Until last July, Reese said he was strong, weighing 165 pounds, working hard, and caring for himself and his wife, Christine. “I was proud of that,” he said.

But last summer, persistent pain began to interrupt his daily life. What he initially believed was the result of hard work soon became something far more serious. Reese sought help at multiple local hospitals, searching for answers and relief.

Eventually, he was referred to a specialist in Medford. After undergoing a series of tests, Reese received devastating news: he had stage 4 pancreatic cancer. “It wasn’t from working,” Reese said. “It was cancer.”

Since then, his condition has taken a dramatic toll. Today, Reese weighs just 80

pounds. Despite the physical decline, his mindset remains resolute. “I know I am going to die,” he said candidly. “But I want to fight.”

According to Reese, his specialist presented him with three options. “I could do nothing, and die. I could go on hospice, take medication, and die. Or, I could fight,” he said. “I am choosing to fight.”

While many of Reese’s monthly treatments are covered, the cost of traveling to Medford for care continues to place a heavy financial strain on the family.

To help offset those costs, Christine has found creative and heartfelt ways to support her husband’s fight. She makes gift baskets that she raffles off at local Bingo games and has started a GoFundMe page titled, “Support Jimmy’s Fight Against Pancreatic Cancer.” Their son, Kaylen, has also set up a Venmo account to assist with expenses at @ Kaylen-Breese.

Christine, who was born and raised in Alturas, has also become known for making badge reels for

Modoc Deputies Seize Meth, Fentanyl; Two Arrested

On April 1, 2026, Modoc County Sheriff’s deputies conducted a traffic stop near the unincorporated town of Canby.

The stop resulted in the seizure of approximately a half-pound of suspected methamphetamine, about 1 gram of suspected fentanyl and a firearm.

A subsequent search warrant served at a residence linked to the suspects led to the discovery of additional suspected methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.

medical staff and others who wear name badges in town. “They call me the badge lady,” she said with a smile. “I started off making 100 of them,” she says, “and they were gone in five days”

Jimmy, who was born in San Fernando and raised in Oceanside, met Christine when the two were both looking at property in California Pines. You could say Eric Estrada brought them together. “We both saw those television ads to buy property.” Their connection was immediate. “We’ve been married 35 years,” Jimmy said.

The couple relies on the support of others to make the frequent trips for treatment possible. Carol Englehart, Christine’s mother, serves as their driver when Jimmy needs to travel to Medford. While insurance covers much of the medical care, many everyday expenses remain.

“Insurance covers a lot, but it does not cover everything,” he said.

When in Medford, they stay at the Cheney House, which provides temporary lodging

for out-of-town patients and their families receiving care at Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center. Even so, they must still cover the cost of gas and food. “And, I get $116 a month in food stamps,” Jimmy said. Compounding the challenges, Jimmy recently lost his foot after a scratch from the family dog led

to serious complications. Despite everything—the diagnosis, the financial strain, and the physical toll—Jimmy remains focused on one thing: continuing to fight. His story is one of resilience, love, and the strength found in Alturas community support during life’s most difficult moments.

Carol Englehart, Jimmy and Christine Breese
Tracy Tavernetti, 54, and Dennis Marcott, 53, both of Modoc County, were arrested on suspicion of

Local Students Explore Careers in Public Safety Through MCORPS Class

The Modoc Community Organization for Rescue and Public Services (MCORPS) class is off to a busy and productive start to the new year.

The class is taught by Sheriff Tex Dowdy and Office of Emergency Services Deputy Director Renae Sweet. It is designed to equip students with real-world skills through education and hands-on training, preparing them to serve the community in times of need.

Students have toured Cal Fire’s Devil’s Garden Camp, completed CPR and first aid training, and participated in a mock search using the Incident Command System. They also have received education on DUI and drugimpaired driving, practiced patient packaging and taken part in wellness training.

The program has hosted a wide range of guest speakers, including the Modoc County district attorney, Alturas Police Department, Alturas Fire Department, Modoc County Probation, a U.S. Forest Service law enforcement officer, a Modoc Superior Court judge, the California Highway Patrol, Modoc County Behavioral Health and a pathologist from Siskiyou County.

The Modoc County Sheriff’s

Office thanked Modoc High School and its staff for their continued support of the program, including a new sign over the classroom door. Students are currently preparing for a mock jury trial, with more activities ahead.

Modoc Youth ‘Betting On Our Future’

March is recognized as Problem Gambling Awareness Month (PGAM) by the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) and Friday Night Live (FNL). On March 29, 2026, Modoc Middle School chapter members of FNLWest conducted a Town Hall Meeting on the XL Reservation. Their BOOF (Betting On Our Future) goals were to increase community awareness of problem gambling, improve an understanding harm in youthful risk taking, and provide information on free support services.

The FNL team, led by Advisor Lisa Craig, sponsored a cultural event with the meeting for adult partners to learn the difference between risk-taking and gambling. Hand Games provided audience participation and discussion, and a new public service announcement (PSA) on risks with underage gambling was featured.

With California having the largest Indian gaming casinos in the nation, Craig

reminded participants that BOOF is not an antigambling program. She explained that the youth hoped to encourage adults to gamble responsibly, and stated, ”Gambling should be fun, responsible and legal. BOOF seeks to prevent underage gambling, which is illegal.”

Participants were taught the songs and skills to hand games, with a highlight being an outdoor demonstration by team of youth. Adult participants received fact sheets to identify signs of problematic gambling behavior, along with contacts for free, confidential and round-the-clock support at 1-800-MY-RESET, text 800GAM or chat at www. NCPGambling.org/chat. A BOOF logo tee shirt was also provided to the meeting partners.

Betting On Our Future is a project of the California Friday Night Life Partnership. For additional information contact RISE at (530) 233-2226.

Ta-Tsa Preston, left, and Simranjeet Kaupresent, right, presented facts on risk and harm to underage gamblers during the BOOF Town Hall Meeting in the Youth Technology Center.
Hand Games were demonstrated by (left to right) Simranjeet Kaur, Jasmine Teeman, Betty George and Ta-Tsa Preston in a traditional setting on the XL Reservation, following the Town Hall Meeting.
Participants in the Tribal Town Hall Meeting for problem gambling awareness month in March received a BOOF tee shirt.

PARCEL NUMBERING SYSTEM EXPLANATION

If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER:

More information may be obtained by contacting the Tax Collector at 204 South Court Street, Alturas, California 96101, phone number (530) 233-6223, Modoc County’s website: www.co.modoc.ca.us – Departments – Tax Collector, click on link to Tax Sales, or on the web site: www.bid4assets.com/modoc.

A public auction sale to the highest bidder for cash, cashier’s check drawn on a state or national bank, check drawn by a state or federal credit union, or a check drawn by a state or federal savings and loan association, or savings association, or savings bank specified in Section 5102 of the Financial Code and authorized to do business in this state will be held by the duly appointed trustee as shown below, of all right, title, and interest conveyed to and now held by the trustee in the hereinafter described property under and pursuant to a Deed of Trust described below. The sale will be made, but without covenant or warranty, expressed or implied, regarding title, possession, or encumbrances, to pay the remaining principal sum of the note(s) secured by the Deed of Trust, with interest and late charges thereon, as provided in the note(s), advances, under the terms of the Deed of Trust, interest thereon, fees, charges and expenses of the Trustee for the total amount (at the time of the initial publication of the Notice of Sale) reasonably estimated to be set forth below. The amount may be greater on the day of sale.

A parcel number, such as 048-523-013-000, is analyzed as follows: 048 would be the map book number, 523 would be map page 52, and block 3 (if the “3” were a “0”, that page would not contain a block), 013 is the parcel number, and 000 is a coded suffix to the parcel number denoting the interest held in parcel 013.

NOTICE

OF TRUSTEE’S

SALE

TS No. CA-25-1018657-CL Order No.: 250376573-CAVOI YOU ARE IN DEFAULT UNDER A DEED OF TRUST DATED 9/6/2023. UNLESS YOU TAKE ACTION TO PROTECT YOUR PROPERTY, IT MAY BE SOLD AT A PUBLIC SALE. IF YOU NEED AN EXPLANATION OF THE NATURE OF THE PROCEEDING AGAINST YOU, YOU SHOULD CONTACT A LAWYER. A public auction sale to the highest bidder for cash, or cash equivalent if deemed acceptable to the trustee, cashier’s check drawn on a state or national bank, check drawn by state or federal credit union, or a check drawn by a state or federal savings and loan association, or savings association, or savings bank specified in Section 5102 to the Financial Code and authorized to do business in this state, will be held by duly appointed trustee. BENEFICIARY MAY ELECT TO BID LESS THAN THE TOTAL AMOUNT DUE. Trustor(s): JOHN DAVID SMITH AND REBECCA BLAKE, HUSBAND AND WIFE, AS JOINT TENANTS Recorded: 9/12/2023 as Instrument

All bidders, at the date, time, and place of the scheduled sale, will be required to show satisfactory support to the auctioneer of their ability to pay the amount they intend to bid, unless arrangements have been made with the trustee prior to the scheduled sale. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. Quick Action Limits Damage in County Road 267 Structure Fire

A structure fire was reported on County Road 267 on April 4 at approximately 10:21 p.m.

According to Alturas Rural Fire Department Assistant Fire Chief Jeremy Wills, two CAL FIRE engines, a water tender, an engine from Alturas Rural Fire Department and two Modoc County deputies responded to the scene.

The deputies arrived first, shortly before fire crews. Due to the quick thinking of the resident and the deputies, the fire was quickly mitigated by shutting off electricity to the house and using a garden hose. When fire crews arrived, the fire had mostly been extinguished.

The home sustained moderate smoke damage but minimal structural damage.

Fire crews checked for hot spots and conducted mop-up operations.

The occupant was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and did not require transport.

Wills credited the quick actions of the occupant and deputies with containing the fire and minimizing damage to the home. He also said the home’s construction aided in its survivability.

Ranch Advisor Associate

Wills expressed gratitude for the mutual aid provided by CAL FIRE.

A preliminary investigation determined the cause of the fire was most likely electrical.
