Easter Fun and Community Spirit Shine at Heart T Hogs Event

Alturas Elementary Students Boost Fire Safety Skills with CAL FIRE

Heart T Hogs held its third annual Family Fun and Easter photo shoot Saturday, March 28, in the Dolby Insurance parking lot.

Each child left with toys, popcorn, a lollipop and lasting memories. The event featured numerous games and a bounce house provided by Y&S Jumpers.

Local vendors, including Nutberry Farms and WICKS Candles, set up booths alongside Heart T Hogs. Amber McAndless of Nutberry Farms also stepped in as photographer after the original photographer was unable to attend due to unforeseen circumstances.

Cameo Thomason of Heart T Hogs said the event drew a strong turnout and benefited from ideal weather.

Costumed characters added to the festive atmosphere, including the Easter Bunny, as well as gnomes, a chick, a squirrel, a bee and a carrot.

The CAL FIRE Lassen Modoc Unit, in collaboration with the Modoc Fire Safe Council and Alturas Elementary School, recently led a vital Fire Prevention Week program for local students. Focusing on this year’s theme, “Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home,” students received handson training inside the

Cartwright “Carty” Van Nes

November 4, 1947 – March 4, 2026

Cartwright “Carty” Van Nes was born on November 4, 1947, in Yreka, California. He passed away peacefully at home in Alturas, California, on March 4, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Carty dedicated much of his life to the grocery business, working for Holiday Market for 45 years, including 21 years serving the Alturas community. He also fulfilled his dream of business ownership, operating his own store in Orland, California, for six years.

He had a deep love for sports and was a devoted fan of the San Francisco 49ers and the Sacramento Kings. Carty rarely missed a local high school football or basketball game and was especially known for his unwavering support of the girls’ teams—proudly serving as their number one fan.

Carty found joy in the outdoors and western way of life. He loved team roping, raising and working cattle, and participating in brandings. He also enjoyed riding his quads at Stony Creek and was always on the lookout for a great place to eat.

Family meant everything to Carty. He cherished time spent with loved ones, especially at the annual family reunion at Lake Siskiyou. He will be fondly remembered for his laidback style—often seen in shorts, white tube socks, and sandals at the beach.

He was preceded in death by his son, Keith; his parents; three sisters; and two brothers.

Carty is survived by his loving wife, Jeannie Van Nes; his daughter, Stacy St. Louis and her husband Lonnie; his stepdaughter, Jennifer

Northrup and her husband Danny; his stepsons, Michael Caeton and Jerry Lauderdale; his grandsons, Cameron Anderson and Haley, Sean Anderson and Karlee, and Kyle St. Louis and Georgia; his granddaughter, Kayla Knight and Peter, and Nasha Richards; seven greatgrandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; his brother, John of Wyoming; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

A celebration of life will be held on May 2 at 1:00 p.m. at the Brass Rail in Alturas. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Carty’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the American Cancer Society.

There will be a celebration of life at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Kenny’s name to Alturas Fire Department or Likely Fire Department.

Modoc Principal Speaks Out on Teen Vaping

On March 24, District 1 Assemblymember Heather Hadwick appeared before the Assembly Environmental Safety and Toxic Materials Committee in Sacramento, joined by Modoc High School Principal Kristen Budmark, who testified about the severity of teen vaping.

During her testimony, Budmark presented several Ziploc bags containing numerous vaping devices confiscated during the 2025-26 school year.

“At my school, vaping is not a small discipline problem. It is an addiction issue, a learning issue and a safety issue,” Budmark said. “The bathroom has become a vape lounge. Some students cannot make it through one class period without leaving to use the restroom because they need a hit. Other students are uncomfortable, and at times afraid, to walk into that environment. This is not normal, and this is not acceptable. Schools cannot

fight this alone. We are willing to do the work, but schools cannot outdiscipline an addiction epidemic. Please help us protect our kids.”

Vaping has become a significant public health concern in schools, creating safety and disposal challenges for local governments.

Hadwick said Assembly Bill 2667 aims to protect students and support communities by banning vaping devices designed to resemble school supplies or everyday items, prohibiting “video game” vapes intended to increase addiction, increasing penalties for illicit sales, making it easier for schools to safely manage confiscated devices, and providing local waste facilities with tools to reduce disposal costs and fire risks.

Schools are currently left with confiscated vaping devices that are difficult to dispose of, while local programs are paying hundreds of

dollars to handle the hazardous materials. That approach is not sustainable.

AB 2667 passed unanimously out of the Assembly Environmental Safety and Toxic Materials Committee and

now moves to the Assembly Business and Professions Committee. The bill focuses on protecting students, supporting schools and ensuring safe, responsible disposal of vaping devices.

Family Escapes Early Morning Blaze

Dear Editor,

A structure fire was reported on West Eighth Street in Alturas at 3:19 a.m.

March 27.

My wife and I just mailed off our ballots for the oneissue special election that will determine whether or not Modoc County and the other few far north counties are robbed of our political voices in Sacramento. The thought of being at the mercy of the far-left coastal population is way beyond unacceptable.

Occupants were inside the home at the time of the fire but were able to evacuate safely before fire crews arrived. No injuries were reported.

The Alturas City Fire Department responded and worked quickly to contain and extinguish the blaze, which had fully engulfed the residence upon arrival. Firefighters remained on scene for an extended period to ensure the fire was completely extinguished and to prevent any potential rekindling.

The Alturas Police Department also responded to assist with scene control and public safety. Emergency medical services were dispatched as a precaution, though no medical treatment was necessary.

Let me tell you a true story from my childhood on the Monterey Peninsula. At age 10 just after my family moved back to Monterey from Lake Tahoe where we lived for two years while my dad helped develop Squaw Valley for the 1960 Winter Olympics, a family from New York moved in down the street from us. They moved to California because they thought the gold rush was still going on. Yep, I kid you not, that’s how ignorant they were of California history. This little true story applies to the clueless coastal

folk who have no idea of the challenges and problems and issues of ranchers, farmers, loggers, and so on. I bet that if a survey was done on the coast that asked where their food comes from they’d think that their food grows on the shelves of grocery stores. If that same hypothetical survey asked coastal folk where the lumber comes from to build their houses they would not be able to answer that question.

Trailer and Outbuildings Destroyed, Home Spared in Alturas Fire

A camp trailer near a residence caught fire March 17 at approximately 6:52 p.m. near Henderson and Northwest streets, according to authorities.

Officials said the fire spread from the trailer to two outbuildings on the property. Alturas City Fire Department worked to

contain and extinguish the blaze, preventing it from reaching the nearby home.

A temporary road closure was put in place while firefighters battled the fire and ensured the area was safe. The residence was spared, but the camp trailer and both outbuildings sustained significant damage.

No injuries were reported. The occupants of the residence were not home at the time of the fire.

Due to the extent of the damage, officials said the cause of the fire could not be determined.

DENIM DAY AWARENESS WALK

The Denim Day story began in Italy 1992, when an 18-year old girl was raped by her 45-year old driving instructor. He was convicted of rape and sentenced to jail, however, he appealed the conviction claiming that because the victim was wearing very tight jeans, she had to help remove them, and by removing the jeans it was not rape but consensual sex. This became known throughout Italy as the “jeans alibi.”

Enraged by the verdict, the women in the Italian Parliament launched a protest wearing jeans on the steps of the Supreme Court. The first Denim Day was born in 1999.

Alturas Lions Club Blood Drive Surpasses Goal, Saves Lives

The Lions Club Blood Drive held on March 17 in Alturas proved to be a tremendous success, exceeding expectations and demonstrating the power of community generosity.

A total of 38 local residents—true “heroes”— rolled up their sleeves to donate blood at the Alturas Community Blood Drive.

Through their efforts, Vitalant collected 30 units of whole blood, five power red donations, and one plasma/ red cell donation, resulting in 40 lifesaving units.

These donations have the potential to save up to 150 lives.

Organizers were thrilled with the turnout and results, surpassing their original goal by six units. Staff at the Vitalant Redding Center even celebrated the achievement, noting the drive’s outstanding success.

“Outstanding work all around,” Jean Atkins from the Lions Club shared. “Surpassing our goal by six units is an impressive achievement—thank you to everyone who contributed and supported this drive.”

While two donors were deferred, their willingness to participate still reflects the strong spirit of giving within the community.

The importance of blood donation is underscored by stories like a patient named

Emily, who was diagnosed with leukemia at just 18 months old, Emily received 35 blood components in her first year of treatment. Like many young patients, she wears “beads of courage,” with each bead representing a medical procedure she has endured. Emily has dozens of beads.

“I want people to know about the life-giving nature of blood,” said Emily’s mother, Christina. “For those like Emily who are ill, tired, or short of breath, it’s amazing what a little bit of blood can do. Because of you, life doesn’t stop for people like Emily. Thank you for your extraordinary act of kindness.”

Every string of beads is different, based on the medical journey of the child. Different colored beads represent challenges that children faced. For example, black beads are given for every poke, yellow beads represent hospital stays, “Act of Courage” artist-made glass beads honor courage displayed during a milestone treatment, and the Purple Heart bead is presented at the completion of treatment.

According to national statistics, one in 285 children in the United States will be diagnosed with cancer before their 20th birthday, making blood donations a critical resource for lifesaving care.

Lions Club Easter Egg Hunt Returns This Saturday

The Alturas Lions Club will host its annual Easter Egg Hunt this Saturday at noon at the Veterans Memorial Park, continuing a long-standing tradition that brings families together each spring.

Children of all ages are invited to take part in the festive hunt, where thousands of colorful eggs will be scattered across the park. The event has become a cherished community gathering, with generations of local families returning year after year to celebrate the holiday.

Adding to the excitement,

the Easter Bunny will make a special appearance, offering children a chance to meet, take photos, and enjoy the spirit of the season.

The Lions Club encourages families to arrive early, as the hunt will begin promptly at 1:00p.m., and join in the fun as Alturas comes together once again for this beloved Easter tradition.

Modoc Indivisible Hosts “No Kings Day” Rally in Alturas

The Modoc Indivisible group held a “No Kings Day” rally on March 28, drawing approximately 60 community members to the intersection of Highways 395 and 299 in Alturas.

Participants gathered along the intersection holding signs, singing, and walking along the roadside. Passing motorists responded with a mix of honks and waves as the group carried out the event.

Attendees were invited to share their perspectives, with several individuals speaking about their reasons for participating. Organizers also incorporated music and group activities as part of the gathering.

According to organizers, the event was intended to serve as both a public demonstration and an opportunity for community members to connect and discuss issues of shared concern.

The rally is one of several recent activities

by the group aimed at encouraging civic engagement and providing a platform for local residents to express their views.

Organizers noted that similar events were held in other communities across the country on the same day.

Three Candidates Seek District 1 Seat on Modoc County Board of Supervisors

Three candidates have announced campaigns for the District 1 seat on the Modoc County Board of Supervisors, including incumbent supervisor Ned Coe and challengers Edwin Allert and Tanja Ramming.

Edwin Allert recently announced his intention to run, saying he believes it is time for stronger representation for the people of Modoc County.

Allert, a 25-year U.S. Air Force veteran, said his decision to run comes from a desire to ensure that local government listens to and represents the concerns of the community. Having spent much of his life in serviceoriented roles, he believes leadership should focus on accountability, transparency, and putting residents first.

“I believe the people of Modoc County deserve to have their voices heard,”

Allert said. “County leadership should reflect the priorities and values of the community.”

Born in Burbank and raised in a rural lifestyle working with livestock, Allert said he understands the importance of agriculture and smalltown life. After graduating from Saugus High School in 1985, he entered the U.S. Air Force, where he served for 25 years in aircraft maintenance, safety management, and leadership roles. During his military career, he deployed in support of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm and later managed large safety and environmental programs affecting thousands of personnel.

Following his retirement from the Air Force in 2010, Allert moved with his family to Alturas, where he had previously purchased property because he felt the area was where he belonged. Since settling in Modoc County, he has worked in local agriculture, retail, and public service, including time with the Modoc County Sheriff’s Office as a correctional officer and animal control officer. After a service-related back injury forced him to leave county employment in 2017, Allert turned his attention to advocating for veterans. He currently holds leadership positions within the Veterans of Foreign Wars at the local, district, and national levels and also serves as commander of the American

Legion post in Alturas.

“My life has been about service,” Allert said. “Running for county supervisor is simply another way I can continue serving the community I care deeply about.”

Tanja Ramming

Tanja Ramming has also announced her candidacy for the District 1 seat, emphasizing collaborative solutions and community partnerships.

“I’m running for Modoc County Board of Supervisors District 1 because our community deserves collective action that delivers, and I have a track record of exactly that,” Ramming said.

Ramming, who has lived in District 1 for nearly a decade, said her work has included securing approximately $2 million in grant funding for Modoc County, helping establish the Modoc County College Center in Alturas, and connecting more than 60 percent of local public school children to the CalKIDS program, directing roughly $500,000 in early college scholarship funds to Modoc families.

She said her priorities include addressing behavioral health needs, improving access to transportation, health care, childcare, and disability services, and supporting workforce development while ensuring that all residents have a voice in county decisions.

“We are an agricultural community in a food desert, yet we have tremendous strengths,” Ramming said.

“We are radically rural and better together. I would be honored to earn the opportunity to represent District 1.”

The seat is currently held by incumbent supervisor Ned Coe, a Modoc County rancher who represents District 1 on the Modoc County Board of Supervisors. Coe has served the district during his current term while also participating in regional and statewide discussions affecting rural counties.

During his time in office, Coe has been active in agricultural advocacy and rural policy issues and has worked with organizations such as the California State Association of Counties to represent rural county concerns.

Upcoming Election

The election for the District 1 seat will take place as part of the upcoming Modoc County election cycle that begins June 2, 2026. Two candidates will go on to the November 3, 2026, election when voters decide who will represent the district on the Board of Supervisors.

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL

BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property.

Please be advised that the Trustee may require entity or trust bidders at this trustee’s sale to provide information, documentation and/or certification of the vesting instructions and the data required to be reported pursuant to FinCEN regulations effective for transfers of residential real property to covered transferees on or after March 1, 2026. The required information must be provided to the trustee before a trustee’s deed upon sale will be issued for covered transfers. These federal regulations will require reporting if a trustee’s deed is issued on or after March 1, 2026, even if the foreclosure sale is conducted prior to March 1, 2026. Additional information regarding these regulations and the required transferee information and certifications can be found at https://www.federalregister. gov/documents/ 2024/08/29/2024-19198/ anti-money-launderingregulations-for-residentialreal-estate-transfers and https://www.fincen.gov/rrefaqs#D_5.

NOTICE TO PROPERTY

OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call or (888) 902-3989 or visit these internet websites or www.nestortrustee. com, using the file number assigned to this case 202519556-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale.

NOTICE TO TENANTS: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call or (888) 902-3989 or visit these internet websites or www. nestortrustee.com, using the file number assigned to this case 2025-19556-CA to find

the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase.
