A Life in the Spotlight: Susana Falcon Brings Global Stage Experience to Lemon Bay Playhouse

Meet Susana Falcon, the new executive director of Lemon Bay Playhouse. Originally from Rochester, New York, she grew up along the Connecticut shoreline. For the past two decades, she’s called Florida’s Gulf Coast home.

Before landing here, Susana lived in New York City, chasing her passion for acting as a SAG and Equity member. Her career took her from stages across

Europe to cruise ships and theaters throughout the U.S., including plenty of time on Florida stages.

Family has always anchored her to this area. Her mother, now at The Preserve in Pompano Beach, kept a house in Englewood for 35 years. Susana has felt drawn to this part of Florida since childhood.

Outside of work, she tries to squeeze in yoga, bike rides, and Zumba classes.

Writing’s another big piece of her life. She’s published 20 works of fiction and spent six years teaching writing courses at the State College of Florida, on both the Bradenton and Venice campuses.

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

For me, perfect happiness is being fully present and focused in the moment. Total concentration on “the now” doesn’t allow for extraneous thoughts or worries to seep in, and I’m less bothered by tasks I might otherwise despise. It also

brings more joy to socializing; there’s nothing worse than watching folks “check out” by scrolling through texts or social media.

Which living person do you most admire?

I can’t say I admire one person the most because I admire a number of acclaimed artists who still work hard at their craft. Laura Linney and Kevin Kline come to mind since both are fine stage actors who are currently producing their own (terrific) episodic on TV.

What is your greatest extravagance?

My greatest extravagance is a stock of health and beauty products. I take all kinds of supplements and use high-end skin care lines in an effort to stave off the inevitable.

What do you consider the most overrated virtue?

To me, the most overrated virtue is morality disguised as niceness. Nice behavior can mask hypocrisy, while morality as true kindness may not appear to be “nice” –such as making students earn their grades—and may even be anonymous—as with charitable donations.

What do you most dislike about your appearance?

I dislike the extra ten pounds I’m battling with age.

Which words or phrases do you most overuse?

Words and phrases I overuse: Awesome. Cool. Fabulous! End of story.

Every edition, Englewood REVIEW spotlights someone who stands out in the community. We ask each person to tackle The Proust Questionnaire; a classic set of

From Propellers to Polished Fenders: A Brilliant Day of Wings, Wheels, and Family Fun

The Florida sun was shining brightly in Englewood on Saturday, March 14, 2026. Everything at Buchan Airport Community Park seemed to glow: polished car hoods, gleaming propellers, you name it. But this wasn’t your average Fly-In & Classic Car Show. This day was one for the record books.

From early morning, the park was alive. Sunlight danced across the runway as the first planes rolled in, engines humming both overhead and on the tarmac.

Picture this: rows of vintage tail draggers beside sleek, modern light-sport aircraft, all sparkling under that famous Gulf Coast sun. Down the taxiway, the Florida West Coast Car Club lined up a stunning parade of classic cars with chrome fenders shining. Families wandered everywhere; kids tugged at their parents, aiming for the snow cone stand, and folks snapped pictures like crazy.

All day long, helicopters lifted off and landed, treating people to breathtaking views of the coastline. “Tommy’s Tunes” blasted music across the park while the aroma of food trucks drifted through the crowd. Pilots swapped stories with curious visitors, kids stared wide-eyed at aerobatic planes, and neighbors caught up over burgers from Libee’s Sports Bar & Grill. This was the first time the car show joined forces with the Fly-In, and you could feel the excitement. It was pure sunshine, pure fun, and pure Englewood spirit. If you missed it, you missed a good one. Englewood REVIEW caught up with folks who’ve been to the Fly-In for years.

Jenny and Jim, originally from Massachusetts, were all smiles as they attended the Fly-In with their adorable pup, Poppy.

ER: Are you visiting for the season?

Jenny: We have a place in Englewood, so we come for three months. Love it, absolutely love it.

ER: Great! And is this your first time at the air show?

Jenny: No, we’ve been before. It’s a yearly thing.

ER: So you come every year?

Jenny: Oh yes! I hope to take a helicopter ride, but not sure my better half would.

ER: What do you think, Jim? Want a helicopter ride?

Jim: Sure, I’d do it.

Jenny: Not so sure about the pooch, though. She’s probably not up for it.

One of the standout attractions was the SWAT vehicle. Kids (and honestly, some adults) eagerly explored every corner. Shane Gilleland, a deputy with 19 years on the SWAT team, was there:

ER: What are you showing folks today?

Shane: We’re showing the newer APC, Armored Personnel Carrier, so everyone hears about it and gets to see what it actually does.

ER: The kids seem to love it.

Shane: Oh, absolutely; climbing in and out, sitting in the driver’s seat, checking out the turret. Really, the switches and buttons are the big draw.

But honestly, the moment everyone waited for was pilot Greg Woods. He’s legendary for his skywriting, and this day was no exception. Greg ran through his checklist, fired up the engine, eased onto the runway, and then he was up, trading the pavement for open sky in seconds. The crowd cheered.

Up he went, and from way above, the airport looked like a patchwork quilt of families, cars, food, and music, all coming together for this celebration.

Down on the ground, the scent of burgers from Libee’s drifted through the crowd, while kids pointed up in wonder. Greg finished his dazzling run, landed gracefully, and rejoined the party.

After his show, Englewood REVIEW caught up with Greg. (And yes, he’s every bit as cool in person as he is in the air.)

ER: So Greg, that was amazing up there.

Greg: Thanks Michele. Thank you..

ER: How does that feel when you’re up there?

Greg: For me, another day in the office, but really exhilarated, as it looks. It’s as fun as it looks.

ER: And how long did it take you to really perfect those skills?

Greg: I’ve been doing it almost 30 years.

ER: 30 years, that’s just absolutely phenomenal.

Greg: People ask, “how do you start flying,” and I tell them, “Get your checkbook and go to the airport. That’s a good start.”

ER: I noticed you have business cards so they could come to you and learn. You could pass on your wisdom to everyone.

Greg: I’ve been teaching for nearly 30 years. Flying for a total of over 40, teaching for 30.

ER: And why or how did flying

start? I know that’s probably a long story, but...

Greg: I was one of those kids that just looked at airplanes and thought they were the coolest thing ever. That’s all. Simple as that.

ER: At what age did you begin?

Greg: Well, not when I was a little kid. I was mid 20s when I started.

ER: Tell me a little more about the air show.

Greg: The thing has grown, I guess the word is exponentially. I didn’t start it, the Rotary Club used to put it on. They did it for I believe 14 or 15 years. At some point, somebody got tired of doing it. And I can see why because now we, the gang, the Buchan gang, has taken over the organization of it with some of our sponsors, the biggest which is Libee’s Restaurant, and many more sponsors. We couldn’t do this without their support.

Michele: What’s the most rewarding thing about doing this work?

Greg: Absolutely the kids’ faces lighting up. No question. We do it for the community to come out here and have a big old flying party.

ER: It is such a party and everyone I’ve spoken to, they’ve come every year, and they love it so much.

Greg: We hope to keep putting it on.

ER: Is there anything you’d like to share with our readers?

Greg: I would say give me a call. I teach flying but I also give what’s called introductory or discovery rides. So if they’d like to see what it’s like to be upside down and back upright again, they can call me.

ER: Upside down? Wow!

Greg: It’s not for everybody, but I am capable of flying straight if needed.

ER: When you take people up in the air, do you read their signals if they’re getting a little...

Greg: Oh yes! The last thing you want is somebody feeling ill up there. So we just keep a conversation going and if I detect they’ve had enough messing around, we cool it and come down. I want to bring people down smiling.

ER: I love that. Well, congratulations on an amazing event and your thrilling flight demonstration.

Greg: I have the best view in town.

Every bit of that exhilarating afternoon captured what Englewood is all about: history, passion, and community. The skywriting faded, but the memories stuck around, along with the smiles.

Chocolate Rabbits and Matzah Mashups: The Great 2026 Holiday Convergence

April 2026 is serving up a holiday mashup you don’t see every day. Passover kicks off at sundown on April 1, right on April Fools’ Day. Just a few days later, Easter Sunday lands on April 5, so there’s going to be a whole lot of juggling between matzah, chocolate, and

everything in between.

Many families are figuring out how to blend the two traditions, and let’s just say the results are creative. Picture a mom trying to wedge some matzah into an Easter egg hunt. She sums it up as “the most brittle, yet festive,

We are pleased to announce a financial assistance grant is now available to residents who live within our service area. The grant is in addition to our no-cost breast cancer detection tests.

sandwich ever created.” You can almost hear the crunch.

So, what happens when you’ve got one kid on Passover and the other riding a chocolate bunny sugar high? Experts are calling it the “Matzah-lujah” season, where someone’s avoiding bread and someone else insists on making a bunny out of everything edible.

One parent admitted, “It’s a delicate balance of celebrating freedom from Egypt while making sure the kids don’t morph into chocolate bunnies.” Honestly, it’s the kind of week that calls for patience, and probably more chocolate.

This wild overlap is actually a pleasant reminder: Whether you’re putting eggs in the garden or digging around for the Afikomen, these holidays are about gathering the people you care about. And matzah tastes way better when smothered in chocolate.

Double-booked? Absolutely. Easter’s on April 5 this year, and Passover pops up a few days earlier. The calendar’s basically trolling us. Passover falling on April Fools’ Day? There’s some cosmic comedian up there.

The 2026 Bread Crisis has pantry shelves in turmoil.

The Easter Bunny’s chocolate offerings are getting the sideeye from Passover Seder committees, with suspicious chametz inspections. Rumor has it, the Bunny tried to swap a basket of eggs for a box of matzah, claiming, “Unleavened bread is just a giant, flat cracker, and I’m all about that crunch.” And families are inventing new hybrid traditions, like the

“Afikomen Egg Hunt,” where kids root around for the hidden matzah inside plastic eggs before they get their chocolate.

Holy Week in April is jampacked. Here’s how it’s stacking up:

-April 1: Passover starts at sundown (and yes, April Fools’ Day).

-April 2: Lent ends with Holy Thursday.

-April 3: Good Friday.

-April 5: Easter Sunday.

The shopping list is easy: eggs, horseradish, and enough chocolate to sink a ship.

Stuff to brag about at dinner:

-Why the overlap? Both holidays follow the lunar calendar, so the dates float instead of landing on the same spot every year.

-Easter’s pretty early this time around; last year it didn’t show until April 20.

-For history buffs: The Last Supper? That was basically a Passover Seder, so this year’s overlap is nothing new, just a full-circle throwback.

Whether you’re searching for eggs or the elusive afikomen, April 2026 is calling for a blend of traditions, a sense of humor, and maybe a giant batch of matzah toffee. Because honestly, that’s the kind of diplomacy on which everyone can agree.

Matzah Meets Marshmallows: Kid-Friendly Activities to Blend Easter & Passover

The Matzah Macaroon Nest Easter nests usually mean

shredded wheat or chow mein noodles, right? Nah, use crumbled matzah instead! Melt some chocolate, mix it up with the matzah and coconut, and you’ve got a Passover-approved treat. Scoop little piles onto parchment paper to shape into nests. Now here’s the twist: instead of just jelly beans, hide a “Golden Afikoman Almond” in one nest. Whoever finds it? They get a free pass on drying the dishes. The stakes are high.

Matzah Pizza EggStravaganza

Grab sheets of matzah for your crust. Hand the kids a hardboiled, peeled egg to use as a “paintbrush” for the sauce—it gets messy, and that’s the point. Then challenge them to top their pizzas with cheese, pepperoni, maybe some veggies—bonus points for a self-portrait that looks like a “Bunny-Prophet.” There’s just no way this is getting old.

Parting the Red Sea (Jell-O Edition)

Make a tray of blue Jell-O. Right before it sets, set up a “dry land” plank—graham cracker or matzah—down the center, with Peeps marshmallow bunnies standing by for their Exodus. Tell the kids these bunnies are making their journey, and if the Jell-O gets wobbly, well, better get out the “scuba gear” (a.k.a. extra sprinkles).

Pro-Tip: If you’re staging any of this in Englewood, stash all chocolate in the fridge until the last second. Otherwise, your nests are going to melt into “Swamp Muck” before you can say, “Happy Holidays!”

Nature Comes Alive: Wildlife Activity Surges Around Englewood This Spring

Dolphin romping in the Gulf

Southwest Florida is buzzing with spring activity this year.

Around Englewood and the nearby coast, sea turtles, migratory birds, and alligators are all on the move as the weather warms up.

Here’s a quick rundown on what’s happening right now on the nature trail:

Sea Turtle Nesting Season

Sea turtle nesting season kicked off March 1, and Leatherback turtles are turning up on local beaches. Loggerheads won’t be far behind, as they usually arrive in April.

If you’re headed to the beach, don’t forget to keep things “Clean, Dark, and Flat.” That means clearing away furniture, picking up your stuff, and smoothing out any holes so these turtles have a shot at nesting.

Birds

The birds are busy too. Audubon

Florida marked off areas for beach-nesting birds like Least Terns and Black Skimmers. If you spot those roped sections, give them a wide berth, because these birds need all the peace they can get.

For birders, March brings a ton of action. Warblers are passing through, and you’ll see resident eagles, herons, and woodpeckers busy as ever. Swallow-tailed Kites have also made their return for the nesting season. There’s a lot to see out there if you’re up for a walk with your binoculars.

Gators

Alligator sightings are up as temperatures climb, both in neighborhoods and along waterways. The FWC reminds everyone to monitor kids and pets near the water’s edge. Alligators are most active now, so it’s smart to stay alert.

Manatees and Dolphins

Dolphins have been putting on a show lately in Englewood and Lemon Bay. Eco-tour guides keep spotting them foraging and playing, even as other spots in Florida struggle with sightings.

As the weather gets warmer, think low to mid-80s, manatees are getting on the move too, leaving their winter hangouts. They can usually be found gliding through the bays and canals around Manasota Key. Boaters, take it slow in shallow waters, as manatees blend right in, and they need your caution.

Shelling

As for shelling, the Englewood Shell Club has held outreach events through February and March, and they’ll be part of the Englewood Earth Day celebration at Buchan Air Park on April 19.

On the beaches, those blustery, choppy days have done us a favor: they’re pushing

It’s prime bird watching season

Bears (yes, we have those, too) and other wildlife are searching for snacks, so don’t entice them closer.

A few quick tips for everyone enjoying the area this spring:

- Keep beaches dark at night. Lights confuse sea turtles and their hatchlings.

- Secure trash and pet food.

- Respect marked areas for nesting birds and resting manatees. Give them plenty of space.

Southwest Florida is bursting with life. It’s a great time to get outside; just remember you’re sharing the space with some amazing wildlife.

With warming temperatures gator sightings are more frequent. STAY ALERT!

Move Over, Johnny Appleseed: English Jan Is Planting a Mango Movement in Englewood

Johnny Appleseed (John Chapman), was a kind, barefoot pioneer who loved nature. In the early 1800s, he walked thousands of miles across the Midwest, not just scattering seeds, but carefully planting fenced nurseries to provide settlers with apple trees for cider and food. He often gave trees away or traded them for clothes, becoming an American legend of generosity.

To be eligible this year, Angel Land Food Forest’s requirements were simple:

- You’ve got to be a full-time resident.

- Your house must be owneroccupied (no renters, sorry).

- You live in 34223 or 34224.

pantries, but in 2021, someone asked about fresh produce. Mango trees seemed like the answer. Since then, they’ve handed out around 500 trees. At first, folks planted them in their front yards, with little signs that said, “I’m a community mango tree.”

Englewood has its own version of Johnny Appleseed, and her name is English Jan. Instead of apples, she is giving away mango trees.

Have you ever wanted a free mango tree? Well, you’re not alone. Angel Land Food Forest, Inc., that’s English Jan’s 501c3 nonprofit right here in Englewood, gave away 100 beautiful, grafted, fiber-less mango trees (7-gallon size). No catches, no tricky fine print. They just want to see mangoes popping up all over town.

English Jan spread the word, and the 100 mango trees were snapped up in one day.

- If you’re a church or a business in those zip codes and you own your land, you can get a bigger 15-gallon tree—nice, right?

- Just plant your tree anywhere on your property and send them a photo once it’s in the ground. It allows their donors to see where their generosity is blooming.

Now that all 100 mango trees have been claimed, the trees will be ready in May to collect in downtown Englewood.

English Jan has been dreaming of spreading mangoes and maybe even bringing an annual Mango Festival to town for many years. Since 2017, Angel Land Food Forest has been collecting bakery goods and distributing them to area food

But after hurricanes ripped through and people lost trees, they decided recipients could plant them wherever they wanted, just promising to care for them and share the fruit when they could.

“We learned a few things, too,” says Jan. “Only full-timers, not snowbirds. Owner-occupied, not rentals. Trees need love— mainly, water when you first plant them.”

Pro tip from English Jan: don’t dig too deep. Keep the tree a smidge higher than ground level. It’s better for their health.

“We’ve worked with local churches, businesses, and homes,” explains Jan. “Mango Bistro has one of our trees out front. If you plant it, you own it. These aren’t for the public to

English Jan is on a mango mission

It’s an Englewood Mango giveaway

Giving mangoes to Meals on Wheels pick, but we ask you to share the mangoes with friends, neighbors, or community spaces.”

Their trees are special. All fiberless, with varieties you won’t believe. Coconut cream actually tastes like coconut. Pineapple Pleasure tastes like, you guessed it, pineapple. There are over 60 varieties in town now and a few in English Jan’s own yard. Grocery-store mangoes? Forget about it.

“We’re using our energy and

our charity funds to get these mangoes to you. We’re not asking for money right now. We just want you to plant, nurture, and enjoy,” she says.

Maybe one day soon, Englewood will have its own Mango Festival. By then, the trees will be loaded with fruit. Perhaps Englewood could fill the square, swap recipes, share baskets, donate the extras to the food pantries; imagine that.

It may be too late to receive one of the free 100 mango trees

this year, but for next year, if you want to get involved, or if you just want your own slice of mango heaven, call or text English Jan at 941-909-0500. Mention the Free Mango Tree Project and help fill Englewood with sunshine, one tree at a time. When you’re biting into your first homegrown mango, you’ll know you’re part of something that’s going to last.

And just like Johnny Appleseed, perhaps English Jan will go down in Englewood history as “Janny Mango-seed.”

Preventing Heatstroke in Pets as Temperatures Rise

As warmer weather returns, pet owners are encouraged to take precautions to protect animals from heatstroke, a potentially fatal condition caused by elevated body temperatures. According to the American Animal Hospital Association, pets are especially vulnerable because they cannot cool themselves efficiently through sweating and instead rely on panting.

Heatstroke can develop quickly, particularly in hot or humid conditions, and may occur even when temperatures seem moderate. Certain pets, including short-nosed breeds, older animals and those with underlying health conditions, face a higher risk.

Common warning signs of heatstroke include:

• Excessive panting and drooling

• Difficulty breathing

• Vomiting or diarrhea

• Weakness or lack of coordination

• Collapse or seizures

Pet owners should act immediately if symptoms appear by moving the animal to a cooler area, offering water and gradually lowering body temperature. Veterinary care is critical if symptoms persist.

To reduce the risk of heat-related illness, experts recommend:

• Keeping pets indoors with air conditioning during extreme heat

• Providing constant access to fresh water and shade

• Exercising pets during cooler morning hours

• Never leaving animals in parked vehicles

With proper awareness and preventive steps, pet owners can help ensure their animals stay safe and healthy throughout the summer months.

Four Generations Strong: Key Agency Provides Modern Insurance Solutions

Since 1952, Key Agency has provided insurance solutions to Englewood residents’ most valuable personal and commercial assets — home, auto, boat, business, and flood insurance.

“We are a family-owned, fullservice independent agency,” said Austin Fogo, an owner-partner at Key Agency. “We provide insurance solutions to protect people’s most valuable assets.”

Key Agency comprises nearly 50 staff members across its four locations. Englewood, North Port, Boca Grande, and Wellen Park. The Englewood office serves as the company’s primary hub.

“We’re excited about our new location in Wellen Park and are happy to be further serving the surrounding area,” Fogo said.

“That place is growing fast.”

While geographic growth is celebratory, the agency’s core values since its founding have remained unchanged: accessible,

personalized service and building trusted, long-term relationships.

“We like to say at Key Agency, your policy comes with an agent,” Fogo said. “You’re not calling an 800 number — you’re talking to a real person with no call centers or wait times.”

During times of crisis, Key Agency works to remain open and accessible for Englewood residents navigating damage and insurance claims, memorably during Hurricane Ian.

“We were proud to be open the day after the storm, ready to serve our community,” Fogo said.

“We turned our conference room into an onsite daycare so that our team could facilitate our clients’ needs while knowing their kids were safe; we have a family atmosphere.”

Preparation kept the agency on after the storm, equipped with a backup generator capable of powering the entire building and internet system to maintain communication even

A local Doctor provides truly compassionate care and proven solutions for chronic pain and complicated conditions

Do you ever wonder what it is that makes some Doctors so incredibly compassionate?

For Dr Lauren Milligan, DOM, AP of Sage Point Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine it is a case of true empathy "I suffered from cluster migraines in my teens and twenties " Cluster migraines are named such for their debilitating pain that is a step above the norm "I had migraine headaches 3 - 5 days a week that were so intense I was often bed ridden and would become physically sick "
