Archer Girls Rally Against Climate Change Inspired by Greta Thunberg, students strike September 21 By Jeff Hall Last Friday, students worldwide are participated in the climate strike. Archer School for Girls bused around 80 young women Downtown so they could join the protest. It was an excused absence for all, and teachers and parents supported the students’ involvement wholeheartedly. The worldwide “climate strike” was inspired by Greta Thunberg of Sweden. Greta is only 16. Today’s students are very inspiring. They seem to be the adults in the room. Too many adults sold out along the way and now can’t even consider that maybe guns, pollution, income inequality, astronomical student debt and a ballooning defi-
cit might catch up with us one day. That would be bad for business today. I told the students I met today that when I was their age we used to protest against the Vietnam War. I think it made a difference. As Ronald Reagan once said, “When you can’t make them see the light, make them feel the heat.” Joan of Arc was only 18 when she led the French Army to victory over the English in the battle of Orléans in 1430. She literally felt the heat as she was burned at the stake by the English a year later. But we remember her all these centuries later. It’s appropriate to focus on heat, because that’s what today’s protest is all about — global warming. It is said that if you toss a frog into a pot of boiling water, it will jump right back out. If you place the same frog in the same pot but turn up the heat slowly, it will just sit there comfortably till it dies when the water becomes too hot.

Health-Ade Kombucha Co-Founder & Chief Sales Officer, Vanessa Dew, misses the early days at Brentwood Farmers Market, but not the early mornings. "I can say I don't miss waking up at three am and car-
rying coolers full of everything and driving the truck into the market," she said reminiscing. It has been a fast and full seven years for Dew, building a beverage company with her two best friend husband and wife, Daina and Justin Trout. The idea to sell kombucha at the farmer's market is something the Trouts and Dew brewed up in an entrepreneur club the three started. Dew said the initial idea for the club was that it be a social think-tank to, "mastermind the next big opportunity.” The trio put invitations out for friends and family to join the unofficial club. But Dew said, "at the end of the day, it was really just me, Daina, and Justin around the dinner table sharing a great bottle of wine and dinner and brainstorming different ideas.” That next big thing turned out to be something Daina Trout had already been making for years to help Justin with digestion issues. Kombucha. "I remember distinctly, our first customer. His name was Richard, and he bought two bottles of original," said Dew of their first day at the Farmers Market. 5 DANGERS OF DOING BUSINESS WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS

When it comes to doing business with friends and family, blood isn’t always thicker than water. Despite the best of intentions and the highest of hopes, what starts out as a seemingly “safe,” mutually-beneficial project or interaction can turn into anything from a minor embarrassment to a major nightmare. I’m not talking about running a family business -- that’s a different topic with a whole host of its own risks and challenges -I’m talking about buying, selling, and doing deals with pals and kinfolk. Here are five common pitfalls: 1) You lose their money: This is always the biggie. When that money goes down the drain, people tend to become a lot less philosophical. They may say “Hey, don’t worry about it, I took the risk,” but in all likelihood your relationship will forever be tainted -whether subtly or dramatically -- by the experience. Family money is often said to be the easiest to get, but it can also be the most expensive. 2) A deal goes bad: A good friend of mine recently did a real estate deal with one of his close relatives. When some critical issues came up, they wound up at an impasse that turned ugly and expensive. Let’s just say they’re no longer as close as they used to be. Just like in any business matter, no matter how foolproof you think a plan may be, it’s wise to assume things can and will go wrong. And “family wrong” can be much worse than “business wrong.” 3) The business comes to the family picnic: There are people who can completely shut off work and draw a solid line across their lives when they close the office door behind them. The rest of us inevitably bring our working lives home with us in one way. When you do business with family and friends, at some point you’ll be with them at an event. If there’s tension brewing between
you, aside from your own discomfort, it will affect those around you. 4) You can’t un-ring the bell: Once you remove the “arms-length” and start doing business with people who are close to you, you often start down a course that’s hard to change or reverse. Changing or getting out of friends/family dealings is much harder than business-as-usual. 5) There’s collateral damage: I’ve introduced friends to my own important business contacts, only to have that introduction turn sour. We all like to think that grownups can keep clear heads about these things, but again, human nature is such that it’s always easy to be calm and philosophical going in, much harder coming out. If you decide to play matchmaker, make sure it’s very clear to all parties that you are simply making an introduction, the rest is completely up to them. Of course, it would be great if doing business with those closest to us was a risk-free, rewarding pleasure. Certainly, sometimes it works out fine, but often times it doesn’t. As with many things in business, it is helpful to try to anticipate the worst-case scenario, and consider the reasoning, benefits and alternatives. Decide if it’s a risk worth taking, and if you can live with the possible consequences. Remember, even when there are no strings attached, there are always strings attached.

For the longest time, it has been almost impossible to deal with questions regarding homelessness because it was viewed as politically incorrect to say or suggest anything that might be interpreted as taking away one's "civil right" to camp out on the sidewalk. But as the years have gone by and the

numbers have climbed -- and as health and trash and other public safety issues mount -- people seem to be willing to think this through a little more clearly. The first big shift was when people started saying, "Well, we really can't force them off the streets if they have no place to go." Fair enough. So let's build big, temporary shelters on the outskirts of town -- tent cities, if you will -- and centralize healthcare, mental healthcare, food, bathrooms, showers, job training, etc. in these locations. That's a start. If there are big parking lots of industrial properties going unused, that would be OK, too. But it seems like an exercise in pure futility to seek suitable areas in residential areas. The land is too expensive and the truly mentally ill homeless people have a way of becoming too menacing to law-abiding, tax-paying citizens who live nearby. Don't the non-homeless have civil rights, too? Should one seriously mentally ill homeless person really have the right to diminish the quality of life for hundreds of pedestrians who might have to walk by someone yelling at them? A few years back, citizens taxed themselves $1.2 billion to build housing. But very little has happened since. So asking for more money at this time isn't the answer. The authorities and our elected officials
can't spend what they already have -- at least not in a timely manner. There are 58,000 homeless people on the streets of Los Angeles County. At the rate authorities are adding housing, many of these people will die on the streets. Jails and hospitals have become de facto shelters for many who really need serious help. That ends up costing a lot more than providing shelter. Building tent cities -- as offensive as they are to many -- at least gets us started. When you think about it, it's allowing the status quo to persist -- thousands and thousands of homeless living on the streets -- that is the cruelest policy of all. People are dying out there. Daily. At some point, push really will come to shove. So let's start talking about it now. If we build tent cities -- and even lots of half million dollar units (really?) -- there will still be quite a few homeless people out there who are referred to as "service resistant." You can offer them a place to go, with food and healthcare, and they still won't want to go. The next big mental leap we need to be prepared to take is this: If we don't mandate these people into shelters, once built, then the problem of homelessness will never go away. We need to be ready to employ some tough love.

If these were our underage children and they didn't know better, as adults we wouldn't hesitate to go out there, grab our kids by the hand, put them in the car and drive them home. We need to think of many homeless in the same way. Many are so mentally ill they can't really help themselves. We need to act like adult parents and get them into shelters and provide them the services they need. This won't just magically happen on its own. We can start with the easier cases -- those

Don’t be certain that every new home is covered by a 10 year builders warranty. If the developer applied for a remodel permit saving a wall of the previous structure, the developer not only skirted many fees that are “new build” specific but also the obligation to provide a 10 year warranty. The developer will typically provide a far less comprehensive warranty for a period of time at the discretion of mutual agreement between the developer and the buyer. Be sure to read and understand the warranty to know what is covered and what is not. Perhaps have the warranty reviewed by an attorney if you feel the language is unclear or in any way ambiguous.
If I’m making upgrades to a new home, is it reasonable to pay for the upgrades in advance? Yes, it is totally reasonable for a developer to ask for payment in advance of the requested modifications as the builder is changing the home to your specific needs and will likely need to remove much of your custom improvements if you fail to complete the purchase. It is also important to understand that making changes to a design package will slow down the builder’s project and proposed date if completion.

What should we look out for when we do new home inspections? Always be sure to go full throttle on inspections. Your standard physical inspection report may likely recommend further investigation in the areas of drainage, geology and environmental if anything comes up in question. Often the installations of fireplaces are incomplete to meet all current safety codes and therefore a fireplace specialist should inspect each fireplace. If you are building a new home there is no certainty that the sewer connection is brand new. That being the case, I would suggest a sewer inspection as well. Ventilation can be inadequate as can be the case with weather proofing and waterproofing. Be specifically focused on sub areas and basements during the inspection process to determine moisture intrusions of any type.
Can you buy from a developer on a contingency to sell your current home? Many developers will agree to a purchase contingent on selling your current home. Every developer has their own criteria for if they would agree and under what conditions they would agree.

Bringing Homeless into Policymaking? Bonin proposes commission composed entirely of people who are or have been homeless By S am C atanzaro After a scathing report was released showing the agency tasked with tackling homelessness in Los Angeles County failed to meet many of its goals, an LA City Councilmember is suggesting bringing homeless or previously homeless individuals into the policymaking process to improve results. Councilmember Mike Bonin, who represents Brentwood, has proposed the creation of a new advisory commission, composed entirely of people who are or have been homeless in Los Angeles. Bonin’s 11th District includes Venice where several encampments make the homelessness crisis especially evident. The commission proposed by Bonin, modeled after city advisory commissions on disability issues, children’s Native American issues and transgender issues, would provide expert and real-world experience to improve policy-making, program development and budgeting decisions.

“We set ourselves up for failure if we do not take into account the experience of people who have been homeless,” said Bonin. “Programs that sound good on paper or in a City Council meeting may not work given the complexities of being without housing. We need to be listening to the people who can tell us if the programs taxpayers are paying for are working as intended.” Earlier this month, Los Angeles City Controller Ron Galperin released a scathing audit that highlighted the county’s failure to house individuals experiencing homelessness. According to the audit, the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) failed to meet seven of nine of its goals in the fiscal year 2017-2018 and five of eight goals in 2018-2019. This poor track record comes as LAHSA has doubled the number of outreach workers over the past two years. LAHSA responded by calling the report “misleading”, stating it “ultimately says nothing about LAHSA’s outreach efforts, which contacted record numbers of our homeless neighbors in the year it studied,” but the agency did agree that complaint-driven outreach should be de-emphasized throughout the system. At City Council meetings policymakers routinely hear about programs and policies from government officials, non-profit executives, business associations, neighborhood

councils, homeowners, developers and activists from a variety of organizations and perspectives. One voice, however, has been largely missing: the voice of people who are homeless or have recently been homeless. “As a result, elected officials and policymakers rarely hear when programs fail to work as advertised, when resources and staff are misaligned, how new ordinances impact people who are homeless, or how sexism, homophobia, and institutional racism impact services,” Bonin said. To date, City officials have created standing commissions and advisory coun-
cils such as the Commission on the Status of Women, the Commission on Disability, the Commission on Community and Family Services, the Native American Indian Commission and the Transgender Advisory Council. Other cities, including Austin, Texas and Vancouver, Canada, have also used “lived experience” advisory commissions to offer guidance on homelessness policy decisions. In legislation Bonin submitted, he requested the city’s Chief Legislative Analyst to make recommendations to the City Council on the most effective way to establish a Commission on Lived Experience with Homelessness, composed entirely of people who are currently, or have been in the recent past, homeless in Los Angeles. Bonin’s legislation further instructs the Legislative Analyst to consult with people who are or who have been homeless as they prepare their recommendations. In addition, Bonin’s motion recommends requirements to represent different segments and demographics of the homeless population, including accounting for the over-representation of African-Americans among individuals experiencing homelessness. Bonin’s legislation was seconded by Councilmember Marqueece Harris-Dawson and was referred to the Homelessness and Poverty Committee.

Five Brentwood Students Selected as National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists By Keldine Hull
On Tuesday, September 10, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) announced the 2020 semifinalists of the 65th Annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Approximately 16,000 high school students will go on to compete for a share of 7,600 scholarships collectively worth over $31 million. According to the NMSC, over 1.5 million juniors in 21,000 high schools throughout the United States entered the scholarship program by taking the 2018 Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/ NMSQT). The next round of the scholarship program will determine who the finalists are. “To become a Finalist, the Semifinalist and a high school official must submit a detailed scholarship application, in which they provide information about the Semifinalist’s academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and
awards received,” said the NMSC. About 15,000 semifinalist students are expected to advance to finalists. Students will be notified in February if they make it to the next stage, and half of those students will go on to win a scholarship. Finalists will be selected for three types of National Merit Scholarships. Winners will be announced between April and July of 2020. The NMSC added, “These scholarship recipients will join more than 345,000 other distinguished young people who have earned the Merit Scholar title.” According to the Daily News, the following students in the Brentwood area were selected as semifinalists: Archer School for Girls Stella M. Relieving Sciatic Nerve Pain with Shevi at Body Rythm Specialized Master Trainer, Shevi Baruch helps patients using Gyrotonic to reduce pain and improve their lives By Keldine Hull For twelve years, following a surgical procedure, Beth was often unable to stand or walk without some discomfort or pain. “It was sciatic nerve pain,” Beth explained. “It had to do with the lower back. I had my muscles in my abdomen cut because of a surgery. It’s really hard to engage your abdominal muscles so you’re incorrectly using your back muscles.” Even with a professional background in yoga, meditation and working with patients who suffered from chronic pain, Beth still struggled with learning how to use her body correctly to address her own pain issues without re-injuring herself. Alexander Audiology: Gene-Editing and Hearing Loss

Hearing loss affects nearly 50 million Americans and 360 million people worldwide. That’s roughly one in five people. It’s the second most prevalent health issue globally, affecting more than those living with Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and diabetes combined. Unfortunately, the prevalence of hearing loss is growing. From the year 2000 to 2015 the number of Americans with hearing loss has doubled and globally, that number is up by 44 percent. While some may think of hearing loss as an inevitable side effect of the aging process, research has shown that hearing loss has widespread negative effects, including increased risk of falls, higher incidence of social isolation, depression and cognitive decline. By simply having a mild hearing loss, that person will have nearly 25 percent greater healthcare costs in their lifetime. For those with profound hearing loss, the added lifetime healthcare costs for that individual exceed one million dollars. Hearing loss is caused by a variety of factors including genetics, noise exposure, ototoxic medications, viruses or bacterial infections and aging. One revolutionary technology has proven successful at altering the gene responsible for genetic hearing loss and eliminating it. This technology is called CRISPR. CRISPR is a system found in bacteria that’s involved in immune defense. Bacteria use CRISPR to cut up the DNA of invading bacterial viruses that would otherwise kill them. Scientists have figured out a way to exploit this quirk in the immune systems of bacteria to edit genes in other organisms. While we’ve had other gene-ed-

iting systems for years, this new version of CRISPR (cas-9) allows for more efficient and highly selective gene editing. The potential applications of this technology include correcting genetic defects and treating and preventing the spread of disease. Researchers have been experimenting with CRISPR for years, using it to tackle HIV, deleting genetic diseases from the cells of experimental human embryos and using it in agricultural industries to increase crop yield, improve nutritional value and raise drought tolerance. Recently, scientists at Harvard Medical School and Boston Children’s Hospital have successfully used CRISPR to alter the genes of mice with genetic hearing loss. Known as Beethoven mice, these animals have a genetic mutation that causes progressive hearing loss, culminating in profound deafness. With the use of CRISPR, scientists have managed to recognize a single incorrect DNA letter in the defective copy (among the 3 billion letters in the mouse genome). This new version of CRISPR ensures the precise and selective cutting of the mutant DNA, while leaving normal DNA unchanged. In experiments of cells with and without the Beethoven mutation, the tool accurately cut the defective copy of the gene in greater than 99 percent of cases. To measure whether this therapy worked in animals, rather than just cells, researchers
evaluated the auditory brainstem responses of mice. Beethoven mice are typically deaf by six months of age, by comparison, mice with normal hearing retain their hearing throughout life. Two months after receiving gene-editing therapy, Beethoven mice exhibited markedly better hearing than their untreated siblings carrying the genetic mutation. Some treated mice showed hearing improvement that approached normal hearing. While we are still a long way from using gene therapy in humans, this research provides hope that one day we will eliminate the debilitating effects of hearing loss by preventing it in the first place. Until then, hearing loss should be taken seriously. A routine hearing test should be part of every-

More Effective Treatment for HIV, Drug-Resistant TB LA BioMed’s Dr. Richard Murphy’s holistic approach By S taff W riter Dr. Richard Murphy is studying a new approach that shows promise for two deadly diseases Patients infected with both HIV and multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDRTB) have historically had an uphill battle with low success rates and high mortality.
Making things worse, until recently, the therapy for MDR-TB has been difficult, involving months of painful injections. But there’s a promising new oral treatment regimen for MDR-TB that could make a huge difference to patients in resource-limited settings. Dr. Richard Murphy, an investigator at the Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute (LA BioMed), is leading a team studying this new short-course regimen to determine why some patients are achieving success –with the intent of creating more effective treatments for everyone. To accomplish that goal, Dr. Murphy and

his collaborator, South African physician Thiloshini Govender, are comparing patients co-infected with HIV and MDR-TB who have not responded to treatment with those who have responded in order to better understand what’s working. Pill burden could be an important factor, so to determine if patients are having trouble keeping up with the demands of treatment, the team is using dried blood spot to monitor drug levels and estimate adherence. Dried blood spots are minimally invasive and allow specimens to be safely stored even in tropical climates. A major advantage of this short-course program is that it requires fewer interactions with the formal health care sector for injections. Reducing visits to clinics may be a good thing both for patients with MDR-TB as well as for other immunocompromised patients at clinics who are at risk for MDR-TB exposure. “Patients suffering from HIV and MDRTB face a difficult path back to health, but this new therapy could make things much easier,” Dr. Murphy said. “It is critical to study why some patients succeed and others do not, so that we can continue to improve treatment outcomes and reduce community TB transmission.” Dr. Murphy’s cohort study is funded by a grant from the UCLA AIDS Institute and Center for AIDS Research. Earlier this summer, he and his team began the study
of MDR-TB and HIV co-infected patients in South Africa at a hospital outside of Durban, South Africa. LA BioMed has been responsible for innovations that have revolutionized health care worldwide, such as the invention of paramedic training protocols. Dr. Murphy’s work is another example of the wide reach of LA BioMed’s research. “Dr. Murphy’s research could save thousands of lives,” said David Meyer, PhD, President and CEO, LA BioMed. “We are so proud of our investigators who consistently look to help those in need.”

WHAT IS MAKING US SICK? Older You Get, Harder You Fall With Barbara Bishop
I’ve always heard that as you age, “avoiding falls” becomes an important part of your life. According to the National Council for Aging Care, every 11 seconds an older adult is treated in the emergency room for a fall. Add me to the “Every 11 Seconds” list. At 60 years old, I now understand what all the fuss is about. A couple of weeks ago, I was coming out of an event, navigating the parking lot. Instead of looking two feet in front of me, I was looking 50 feet in front of me, trying to locate my car. All of a sudden, I tripped, without any warning, on a concrete block, the kind used in parking lots to organize the cars. (I hate those blocks; I have a small car that sits low, and I’ve hit those mo-fos several times, scraping the underbelly of the front end.) I flew over the blockade; I tried to break my fall by putting my right arm against a parked car next to me. Because of the force of the fall, my arm violently bent backward. I then fell on my left knee and elbow to the parking lot ground. I felt pain in my right arm that I had never experienced before. OMG! My arm is broken, I thought.
I couldn’t move. I started to cry, embarrassed, scared and in intense pain. My friend ran to get help. It was decided that I needed an ambulance to take me to the ER. 20 minutes later, they arrived. The paramedics lifted me on to a stretcher. I screamed in pain, but they remained calm and continued their protocols. I was then quickly lifted into the ambulance, and whisked off to Saint John’s. We were close to the hospital, thank god. And, on a Saturday night at 10 p.m., it wasn’t jammed. Thank god! I was put into a room almost immediately. The attending nurse was trying to find a vein in my left arm, and kept poking me in the wrong place. I had to show her where, at the same time begging her to get it done, so I could be relieved of some of the pain with an intravenous pain killer. (Later I had a massive bruise on my arm. Hopefully she’ll get better.) Once I was gently numbed, they took me for x-rays. They determined that I had a dislocated shoulder! Wow. Throughout my entire life, I’ve never had a broken bone, torn cartilage, sprained ankle, nothing. When I was younger, I was kind of jealous of the kids that got to wear casts. Not any more. The ER doc came into my room. Her plan was to put the shoulder back into place. Hopefully with me “asleep,” which she made arrangements for. I guess I fell asleep right

away, because before I knew it, she woke me up to tell me she was done. It took less than five minutes! There was no additional damage. I was lucky. And they were great caregivers. In and out within two hours. A few days later, my right arm was covered in deep, dark bruises. My elbow and my knee were a black and blue mess as
well. A week later, the bruises were 80 percent gone. I had a follow up with my orthopedic surgeon. He said that I was a “bad ass” because I was healing so well. Little did he know how much of a baby I was a week ago. Whether you’re 50-plus or not, be careful out there!

HIVE Mentality for Seniors Living with HIV/AIDS Celebrate National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day. By Amy Patton Those in the LGBTQ+ community living in the late ‘80s to the early ‘90s did the unthinkable: they survived the AIDS Crisis. Now, they are aging and thriving. But living with HIV/ AIDS is no easy feat. September 18 is National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day—a day to call attention to the growing number of people living long and full lives with HIV and aging-related challenges of HIV prevention, testing, treatment, and care. That’s where the HIVE (HIV- Elders) program comes in. HIVE launched in 2018 and is tailored for men who have sex with men (MSM) of all ethnicities who are 50 years of age and older and living with HIV. The program is designed to improve the health and well-being of this growing population of men by addressing stigma, social isolation, social support, and empowerment. Each week HIVE orchestrates meetings and events with purpose--meaning, topics are based off of an in-house study that identified the needs assessments for this group, including housing and food insecurity, stigma, isolation, depression, comorbidities, and other issues affecting people with HIV 50 and older. Meet Frank Gulli, who currently lives in LGBT Triangle Square – the very first senior housing for LGBTQ people in the United States. It is managed by the Los Angeles LGBT Center. Frank is longtime survivor of HIV and a member of HIVE. Century City-Westwood News spoke with Frank about his experience. Check it out: Can you introduce yourself? My name is Frank Gulli. I’m 68 years old and a proud gay man living with HIV who has fought for my rights for a long time. In one sentence, what is the HIVE program? The HIVE Program addresses some of the psychosocial issues that people like me, who are over 50 and living with HIV, are dealing with. Can you elaborate? HIVE offers social connection, so we don’t isolate; life skills to deal with past trauma, coping and stress; conversation so we stay current with each other, and health education dinners so we can eat and learn about managing co-morbidities. What is a HIVE exactly? HIVE is an APLA Health program that stands for HIV-Elders. It is also a group with members who share the same interests in being empowered while living with HIV over 50. What was the reason/driving factor to launch the HIVE program? Mainly that the majority of people living with HIV in the United States are now over the age of 50 and that number will continue to increase. We have different needs than someone who is 25 who was just diagnosed with HIV and can access new medications and an established continuum of care in Los Angeles. How does someone apply/get accepted to the HIVE program?

There is no screening process. You just choose to participate in one or more weekly HIVE events and treat each other with the respect that we deserve. Why is HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day important to the LGBTQ+ community? It celebrates the struggles we overcame in the 80s and 90s with the AIDS crisis, the fact that we are alive when so many are not here with us, and that we are survivors, growing in numbers, here to stay. Can you talk on being a long-time survivor of HIV? What unique challenges come up? How do you overcome them? I was living in San Francisco when it became ground zero of the AIDS epidemic. By 1985, the city was full of heartbreak. I was diagnosed with HIV that year, forever making 1985 a pivotal year. There were no medical treatments, other than some antibiotics that seemed to prolong death for many. For whatever reason, maybe by the grace of God, I never got sick from HIV and I held on to hope for a better day. In 2000, I moved to Los Angeles and was on effective medication that suppressed my virus. Life in LA was cautiously optimistic for me. I was living pretty well, despite my diagnosis, and my fear of death had gone away. Life went on like that, but then suddenly, my new gang of friends started getting older. I started to see a lot of isolation and unhappiness take over. I did what I could to stay healthy, connected and relevant. I got more educated on HIV, I socialized as much as possible and entertained. I believe that we are now in a place where HIV is no longer chaos and an uncontrolled crisis; however, the HIV/AIDS epidemics is still a topic that needs our attention and requires everyone’s attention. There are several organizations that do not have the funds for programs that benefit clients like me. For me it is essential to come together as one community and be able to show support and show that we are there for one another. Is there any new or exciting information about the program or being a HIVE? HIVE events continue to increase. There is something every week to participate in. There is a big HIVE HIV & Aging Summit for consumers, like me, on December 7 at the new LA LGBT Senior Center. There is also a fun screening of Rocketman: the Sing Along version, on the Paramount lot for HIV/AIDS & Aging Awareness Day.

Skin Cancer Foundation Comes to Westside Mobile skin cancer education and screening program visits SM By Staff Writer Destination: Healthy Skin, The Skin Cancer Foundation’s mobile skin cancer education and screening program, has wrapped its third annual journey around the U.S. Local volunteer dermatologists conducted 1,827 free skin cancer screenings aboard the Foundation’s 38-foot Destination: Healthy Skin RV. Program participants also received The Skin Cancer Foundation’s educational materials and sun protection samples. The Destination: Healthy Skin RV traveled more than 10,000 miles between May and August, making stops for educational events in New York, Florida, Louisiana, Texas, Arizona, California, Utah, Colorado, Nebraska, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee and Connecticut. Together, 59 dermatologists teamed up to donate more than 175 hours of free, full-body skin exams at Destination: Healthy Skin events. The dermatologists identified 578 potential skin cancers and precancers, 40 of which were suspected melanomas. “Keeping this program on the road and providing this vital public health service has been one of our greatest accomplishments,” says Deborah S. Sarnoff, MD, president of The Skin Cancer Foundation. “Many people who came by the RV told us they wouldn’t have gotten a screening this year
if we weren’t in town. These and other heartfelt comments motivate us to continue our efforts to reach as many communities as possible.” Skin cancers that are found and removed early, before they’ve had a chance to spread, are easier to treat and lead to better outcomes for patients. The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends all adults see a dermatologist at least once a year for a skin exam while consistently checking their skin at home for anything new, changing or unusual. For the second year in a row, Walgreens collaborated with The Skin Cancer Foundation on the program. In each city, Walgreens representatives gave attendees the opportunity to receive a hightech facial image scan to examine sub-surface sun damage utilizing our Canfield Reveal® Imaging system. They also hosted interactive skin care experiences featuring Walgreens beauty consultants specially trained in sun care. These experts were on site to distribute sunscreen samples, educate visitors on the importance of sun protection and provide advice for staying safe in the sun. The Skin Cancer Foundation is the only global organization solely devoted to the prevention, early detection and treatment of skin cancer. The mission of the Foundation is to decrease the incidence of skin cancer through public and professional education and research. Since its inception in 1979, the Foundation has recommended following a complete sun protection regimen that includes seeking shade and covering up with clothing, including a wide-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses, in addition to daily sunscreen use. Tap Into Science with PS Science PS Science Motto: See. Do. Know. B y S herry L e M ire These three words sound like the countdown on a race course: See-do-know, go! And where are we racing? To the future, of course. What may sound cliché is fact: children are the future. They will become the
world’s scientists, doctors, researchers, engineers, urban planners, chemists – you name it, they will become it. PS Science is a program that launches elementary students onto a track of inquiry-based science learning. We at PS Science have a mission to prepare students for stewarding the world they will inherit. With multiple environmental, climate, and global challenges to tackle, students need a solid foundation in science and problem-solving to thrive. Being children now, they still need wonder and confidence and hope. PS Science is designed to give it to them. PS Science launched in 2006 as a project of the Crossroads Community Outreach Foundation, an initiative of Crossroads School in Santa Monica. Crossroads School provided critical financial support and resources until 2018, when PS Science grew large enough to become its own separate nonprofit organization. Hands-on training for teachers and implementation of Next Generation Science Standards gives kids K-5 a chance to see the world around them with curious eyes, do collaborative exploration and experiments with real materials, know the joy of discovery and the power of knowledge. The majority of students in the schools we serve say that science is their favorite subject, and that’s the kind of excitement they need in the race to the future. It’s our goal to help them get there.

pany versus the risk of a startup. And, being an engineer and executive, her opinion carried weight. While her mother may have put up a good fight against Dew taking such a career risk, she also played a part in being the one to inspire Dew in the first place. "She influenced me a ton," Dew said of her mother. "Being an immigrant, being one of the few Asian females within a grad school engineering program, and then, even one of the few female Asian executives at her company," she said. Dew said it is not inherent in Asian culture for a woman to "go against the grain." At a conference in Singapore, earlier this year, she said she was surprised to find female Asian entrepreneurs underrepresented on a global scale, with most coming from the United States. Dew said, "if you're going to create your own future, you have to bet on yourself." She hopes the growing success and potential international distribution of Health-Ade might act as an inspiration to fellow female Asian entrepreneurs. Inspiration aside, Dew believes momentum is the best way to overcome apprehension. "There's a lot of doubt that can creep in, that can cause this paralysis moment, and I think it's all about putting one foot in front of the other and marching forward," she said, adding, "anyone who says they don't listen to fear and doubt is lying be-
cause it creeps up." Following gut instinct is something Dew has honored throughout her entrepreneurial journey. Making the Health-Ade catchphrase, "Follow your gut!" apt in more ways than one. "We were following our gut, feeling there was something greater than what we were doing at that time," she explained of the drive behind the trio taking a leap and persevering. One mind-blowing "stamp of approval" for Dew was meeting two people that, "actually tattooed the Health-Ade anchor and our characters onto their bodies," she said. No matter how big they grow, Dew said they are never far from their roots at the farmer's market. September 17, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted to support Boise. Supervisor Sheila Kuehl who represents Brentwood, however, voted against supporting Boise. On September 20, the BCC submitted an amicus brief supporting Boise, saying the ruling only will make the homeless crisis worse. "Its ruling creates confusion and inhibits the ability of local governments to effectively and humanely manage the homeless crisis and protect the health and safety of all their citizens, both the homeless and sheltered," reads the brief. "By eliminating rational tools for governmental bodies to protect their citizens’ health, safety, and welfare, the homelessness crisis is not going to be solved – it is going to get worse." Because of its vicinity to the VA, Brentwood has a significant population of “service resistant homeless,” including service resistant veterans. The BCC argues in their amicus brief that the Boise ruling ultimately harms, not helps, these individuals. "We have learned that the best outcomes for the homeless are when the homeless accept services that address the underlying causes of their homelessness, including mental illness, PTSD, substance abuse, or some combination thereof. The same regulations that protect the health and safety of our community at large often serve as the 'stick' that can be used

by our service providers to convince the homeless to accept the 'carrot' of services," the BCC writes. In addition, the BCC argues that without regulation of encampments, Los Angeles faces a public health and safety crisis that results from unsanitary streets, dangerous runoff and rat infestations. Some 921 homeless individuals died on the streets of Los Angeles in 2018, and this year 680 homeless individuals have died as of September 7, 2019. According to Councilmember Mike Bonin, it is expected that the number of homeless deaths in Los Angeles will exceed 1,000 by the end of 2019 The BCC says that real-world experiences of unregulated encampments in Brentwood and other nearby neighborhoods impacts the daily lives of residents. "Many residents of our community were on evacuation alert for days in the Fall of 2017 because outdoor cooking at a homeless encampment started the Skirball Fire," the BCC writes. "LA firefighters are now extinguishing almost seven fires a day started at homeless encampments or tents in neighborhoods across the city." The BCC added that many commercial property owners struggle to attract tenants because of an encampment immediately outside their property. Since the brief was filed, the Brentwood Homeowners Association and the Pacific Palisades Community Council have expressed their support the BCC Amicus Brief. 10 Tips for Urban Gardening By Staff Writer Westsiders may sometimes think that gardening is only for those who live in suburbs or rural communities, but planting an urban garden can be easy. Whether you are planting a garden for yourself or your family, you can do your part to create a more sustainable and green future. These simple steps recommended by Arjan Stephens, executive vice president at Nature’s Path Organic Foods, can help you on your way to greening your thumb and the planet: No Space, No Problem: Not everyone has a
backyard, roof or balcony. To overcome this issue, start a container garden. While decorative pots can be lovely, they don’t improve the quality of your plants and can be expensive. Instead, you can use a large bucket from a garden store, which is a low-cost and effective option. Or upcycle containers not in use, such as crates, old toys or paint cans. Plant Selection: There are vegetable, flower and herb varieties that are easy to grow in urban spaces. better in confined spaces. It Takes a Village: In addition to establishing your own garden, another way to plant is by getting involved with community gardens. Each year, Nature’s Path Food’s Gardens for Good program supports community gardens that make fresh, organic food more accessible in local neighborhoods. Three $15,000 grants are available to gardens that demonstrate high community support and a viable plan for the urban agriculture project. Plant Right: Potting your plants takes a few simple steps. Put some gravel in the bottom of your container to help with drainage and fill with soil, tamping it a bit. Leave 1 inch at the top for watering. Tamp the soil after the plants are in place and water gently. Portable Planters: An advantage of container gardens is that they allow you to easily move them in and out of the sun. If your plants seem to dry out in one window area, you can try different areas to adjust to what works best. Grow Up: Small spaces make it ideal to grow vertically, which means planting tall plants like squash, cucumbers, beans and tomatoes. Drain Gain: Whatever container you choose for your garden, remember drainage holes are essential. Without proper drainage, soil can become waterlogged and plants may die. Welcome The Positive The entrance to your home is very important in feng shui. If a road or path leads directly to the front door, trouble can come right in. Plant shrubs or meander the pathway in order to soften the impact of a straight line to the door. The entry hall should be spacious and bright so that chi can flow easily. If your hallway is small or dark, use bright lighting and decorations, and install mirrors to reflect as much light as possible. The entry should be light; dark ceilings signify a stormy sky.
Clutter tangles the flow of chi energy and creates a stagnant environment. Keep your hallways and entry clear of clutter and tidy to encourage a health flow into your home. Remove Chaos From Closets Not only is feng shui fun to read about, it is also very practical. One of the basic tenents of feng shui theory is to maintain an uncluttered home in order to have an uncluttered spirit. Most of our closets are probably just the opposite… wouldn’t it be great to clean them out? Closet organizers estimate that we wear about 20 percent of our wardrobes. In Chinese traditions, crowded closets impede the smooth flow of Chi and the worst offenders are unworn items that have been hanging around, no pun intended, sometimes for years. Of course we all have wonderful excuses for hanging on to old stuff: it was expensive, I’m going on a diet, I might wear it someday. To get started on a closet clean-up, wear your usual wardrobe for a month. Place these favorite items in one part of the closet, and then be absolutely brutal about weeding through the rest. As part of an L.A. County-sponsored initiative to teach sustainable gardening practices, L.A.’s Smart Gardening Program hosts advanced composting and vermicomposting workshops throughout the Westside. At one workshop, worms were the focus. Virtually every seat was filled by participants in the meeting room allocated for the workshop. A presentation given by one of Smart Gardening’s instructors included
detailed information about how to obtain materials for composting as well as suggestions for building a better compost bin. Questions from the audience were interspersed throughout the discussion. According to senior instructor Pamela Yates, the benefits of vermicomposting – or, composting with worms – are manifold. Compost-enriched soil is not only nutrient-rich but drought-resistant, requiring less water. Additionally, a jar of “worm tea,” which is a homemade worm compost-enriched liquid

substance, is anaerobic, meaning it can kill unwanted plants. “You’ll never have to buy another pesticide or fertilizer again,” said Yates. This workshop was one of many which are held regularly in virtually every region of L.A. County, most of which are beginning workshops, meant to introduce participants to composting as well as water-resistant and fire-resistant gardening. “If we get good attendance and good feedback we come back and do it again,”
said Yates. Smart Gardening also includes an educational initiative, teaching some of their gardening practices to children and teens in school. Following this initiative, three students whose projects were spurred by Smart Gardening’s initiatives were awarded college scholarships. “The kids get into it. Worms become their pets,” “said Yates.
