This directory offers a diverse selection of sires designed to add measurable value to both purebred and commercial operations across a wide range of production environments. As America’s first beef breed, Santa Gertrudis cattle have a long and proven history of meeting the evolving demands of the cattle industry. From early adoption of genetic evaluation to ongoing, intentional selection for fertility, longevity, efficiency, and performance, Santa Gertrudis breeders remain committed to producing functional, high quality cattle. Today’s Santa Gertrudis continue to thrive in some of the world’s most challenging environments, combining natural disease and parasite resistance with fast-growing, profitable calves that perform on the ranch and in the feed yard. The foundation of genetic selection in 2026 continues to be Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs). EPDs are predictions of how an animal’s future progeny are expected to perform relative to other animals’ progeny recorded in the Santa Gertrudis Breeders International database. These values are expressed in units of measure (plus or minus) consistent with each trait being evaluated and are calculated using pedigree, performance, and genomic information. Extensive research has demonstrated that EPDs are the most reliable indicator of an animal’s true genetic merit. Producers are encouraged to use EPDs to select for traits that best align with their operational goals, while considering environmental conditions and marketing objectives. SGBI remains an industry leader in genetic evaluation technology. As the first beef breed association to adopt the singlestep method for incorporating DNA into EPD calculations, SGBI utilizes genomic information to measure the actual genetic relationships among animals included in each evaluation. In 2013, SGBI released the first genomic-enhanced EPDs for Bos indicus-influenced cattle, setting a standard that continues today. Incorporating DNA into genetic evaluations results in EPDs that are more accurate and predictable than those based solely on pedigree and performance data. Each month, SGBI integrates genotypes from tens of thousands of animals into its EPD calculations, providing producers with increased confidence that the cattle they select will perform as expected. Below is a description of the EPDs and selection indexes you will find in the 2026 catalog. Birth Weight (BW): Indicator of calf size at birth and calving ease. Weaning Weight (WW): Indicator of growth from birth to weaning, based on adjusted 205-day weights. Yearling Weight (YW): Indicator of growth from birth to one year of age, based on adjusted 365-day weights. Milk (MK): Pounds of calf weight at weaning attributable to the dam’s milk production. Total Maternal (TM): Combination of Weaning Weight and Milk EPDs, reflecting a cow’s ability to wean a heavier calf. Scrotal Circumference (SC): Indicator of fertility in bulls and age at puberty in heifers, measured in centimeters. Heifer Pregnancy (HP): Probability that a heifer will become pregnant as a yearling, reported as a percentage. Breed Back (BB): Probability that a two-year-old cow will conceive after being pregnant as a yearling, reported as a percentage. Carcass Weight (CW): Predicted differences in hot carcass weight, expressed in pounds. Ribeye Area (REA): Indicator of muscling, expressed in square inches. Marbling (MB): Evaluation of intramuscular fat deposition; a one-unit change equals one full USDA quality grade. Backfat Thickness (FT): Indicator of fat thickness measured between the 12th and 13th ribs. Balanced Index: Designed for producers retaining replacement heifers while marketing cattle on the grid or selling feeder calves where carcass merit is valued. This index incorporates all EPDs except Carcass Weight and Backfat.

PERCENTILE RANKING FOR EPD TRAITS

Cow/Calf Index: Intended for operations retaining replacement heifers but marketing calves at or near weaning. This index emphasizes fertility and maternal performance and includes Heifer Pregnancy, Breed Back, Birth Weight, Weaning Weight, Milk, and Scrotal Circumference. Terminal Index: Designed for producers not retaining replacement heifers and marketing calves on a carcass-based system. This index incorporates Birth Weight, Weaning Weight, Yearling Weight, Ribeye Area, Marbling, and Backfat. All selection indexes are reported as percentile rankings from 1 to 99, indicating where an animal ranks within the breed. A value of 1 places the animal in the top 1% of the breed, while values greater than 95 indicate the bottom 5%. Accuracy values accompany each EPD and reflect the reliability of the prediction. Accuracies greater than 0.50 are considered highly reliable. Accuracy increases as additional data are collected, including DNA testing, ultrasound records, and progeny performance. While higher accuracies improve confidence, producers should recognize that genetic variation may still result in individual offspring exceeding or failing to meet expected performance.
