FROM THE FRONT OFFICE Keaton Dodd, SGBI Executive Director Membership, The most recent SGBI National Cattle Evaluation provides an opportunity to look beyond individual animals and evaluate the genetic direction of the Santa Gertrudis breed. Looking at five-year intervals from 2007 through 2025, the numbers demonstrate meaningful progress in several economically important traits. Growth is one of the clearest examples of our progress. WW increased from 3.5 to 11.4 and YW from 2.2 to 14.7, while BW moved from 0.19 to -0.15. This indicates substantial improvement in postnatal growth without a corresponding increase in genetic Birth Weight. We have also seen positive movement in reproductive and carcass traits, while our selection indexes show significant improvement in the overall economic direction of the breed. SERVICES

PRESIDENT'S PERSPECTIVE Arlin Taylor, SGBI President Hello, fellow Santa Gertrudis breeders,
It has been a busy summer and early fall for all of us, with cattle sales, shows, and the everyday life. As we get ready for fall weaning, we have a good opportunity to take a closer look at this year’s calf crop and see how our herds are progressing.
SGBI Board of Directors President Arlin Taylor President Elect Daniel Kubecka Secretary/Treasurer Patti Ermis Long Range Planning John Justiss Marketing/Promotion Daniel Kubecka Breed Improvement Perry Bass Youth Activities Callie Loden Membership Mickey Bowman Directors by Region
Each calf crop represents months of planning, breeding decisions, and hard work. We all want to know how those decisions are working out. Recording weaning weights, dates, and accurate calf identification helps us see what is working well and where we can improve.
Daniel Kubecka, Texas Wendt Ranches Partners (979) 240-5312 | wendtranches@hotmail.com
I encourage our members to make data collection part of their weaning routine. A little planning ahead can help us gather the information we need while the cattle are already being handled. Complete records on the whole calf crop give us a clearer picture of our herds.
Callie Loden, Texas Strait Ranches (210) 837-1199 | callie@straitranches.com
Once that information is collected, let’s take the next step and submit it to the association office. The records we keep at home become even more valuable when they contribute to our shared database. Each member has something to contribute, and that information helps all of us make better breeding and selection decisions. Our members raise Santa Gertrudis cattle under many different conditions. We see how our cattle adapt and perform in our own herds. Sharing those records helps us document that performance across a wide range of environments. This fall, let’s take the time to weigh, record, evaluate, and submit our data. When each of us does our part, we help strengthen our own herds and give the next generation of Santa Gertrudis breeders a better foundation to build on.

BREEDER FEATURE BREEDER FEATURE
Blacktip Cattle, Greensboro, Alabama
For Robert Walker, building a cattle operation has required learning what works, recognizing what doesn't and surrounding himself with people willing to help him along the way. Originally from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Walker operates a cattle ranch in Greensboro, Alabama, and is a partner in Sandhills Feeders, a heifer and bull development operation in Muleshoe, Texas, with Cody Black and Kade Thigpen. His Alabama operation includes approximately 350 cows, with American Red, Santa Gertrudis-influenced and registered Santa Gertrudis genetics playing a role in the program. A first-generation cattleman, Walker initially entered the commercial cow-calf business in his 20s and 30s before stepping away for about a decade. When he returned to the cattle business more than a decade ago, he knew he wanted to build his program differently. “I decided that the only way this was going to work is if I had marketable genetics behind me,” Walker said. With an interest in red cattle, Walker and his wife, Gina Spencer, began learning about Santa Gertrudis cattle and American Reds. Their search eventually took them to Texas, where they toured King Ranch and purchased a load of American Red open heifers for their operation, which was located in Okeechobee, Florida, at the time. From there, Walker began looking for Santa Gertrudis bulls. Although he admits he knew little about pedigrees when he started, he purchased two sons of Chosen One as some of his first bulls and continued building his program. Today, marketability remains at the center of Walker's breeding decisions. He focuses on growth, bone, high weaning and yearling weights and reasonable birth weights while producing cattle that will work for his commercial customers. “I buy bulls that have marketable history behind them,” Walker said. Rather than trying to become an expert in every aspect of cattle production, Walker has relied on established cattlemen and breeders to help guide his decisions. He credits much of his progress to being willing to ask questions and listen when someone with more experience offers advice. As a first-generation producer, that guidance has been especially important. Walker readily admits there have been lessons learned along the way, including decisions he would make differently today. However, some of those experiences also introduced him to what he considers one of the greatest strengths of the Santa Gertrudis breed – its people. “Everybody in this Santa Gertrudis business has been nothing but accommodating and helpful and encouraging,” Walker said. “Everyone in the breed is wonderful. I'm proud to be a part of it.” Walker credits breeders including Kade Thigpen, Arlin Taylor, Cody Black, John Justiss, Yancey Strait and the Sanchez family with Red Doc Farms for providing guidance and honest opinions as he continues developing his program. Even today, he reaches out to those he trusts when evaluating cattle or considering a new direction. That willingness to seek advice is also what Walker recommends to someone entering the purebred cattle business for the first time. “Seek out an established breeder that can mentor you into purebred cattle,” Walker said. “You don't know what you don't know.” For Walker, mentorship has helped turn the challenges of being a first-generation cattleman into opportunities to learn. As he continues building his program, the same principle that brought him to Santa Gertrudis cattle remains at its foundation: producing cattle backed by genetics customers can recognize, trust and put to work.

JUNIOR FEATURE Tripp Nichols, Texas
For Tripp Nichols, success in the show ring starts at home. Long before an animal enters the ring, there are breeding decisions to make, feed to manage, and countless hours spent in the barn.
That work has helped the 14-year-old from Blooming Grove, Texas, accomplish something he never imagined – winning the Bred and Owned Show at the National Junior Santa Gertrudis Show three years in a row. Tripp's roots in the Santa Gertrudis breed were established before he was born. Raising Santa Gertrudis cattle has always been part of his family's life, and Tripp has worked alongside his dad for as long as he can remember. The 14-year-old credits his dad, Matt Nichols, as his biggest influence in the breed. “He’s taught me how to make decisions when it comes to breeding cows and what genetics to pick,” Tripp said. “He’s taught me a lot about clipping, feeding them, getting them show ready and everything.” Through the lessons passed down by his dad and family, Tripp isn't just learning how to show cattle; he's learning how to make cattle. Tripp exhibited the 2023-24 SGBI High Point Female, CLB 221 TanaMarie. While the banners first made TanaMarie memorable, Tripp has become equally interested in what she has produced since leaving the show ring. “Her calves have been pretty good,” Tripp said. “Bull calves come out stout, and she’s had a bunch of good heifers. They have been really maternal with good udders and have good birth weights.” The 2026 National Junior Santa Gertrudis Show marked Tripp's third consecutive Grand Champion Bred and Owned Female win. “It’s a tremendous honor,” Tripp said. “I think it’s something I never imagined I would have ever done that good at Nationals, let alone do it three times.” For Tripp, raising a national champion requires decisions long before show day. Preparing his most recent Bred and Owned champion meant selecting a bull that complemented the female, managing her condition and putting in the work at home to have both cow and calf ready when it mattered. Aside from NJSGS, Tripp's favorite show to attend each year is the District 6 Junior Show in Corydon, Indiana. He enjoys its laid-back atmosphere, contests and the opportunity to reconnect with people he may only see once a year. Those relationships have become an important part of Tripp's involvement in the breed. Serving on the NJSGA Board has encouraged him to meet more people, open up and become more involved with junior members from across the country. As he continues his own journey, Tripp's advice to new NJSGA members reflects the same approach that has brought him success. “If I had to give advice to them, it would probably be to just keep trying, have confidence in yourself and just go out there,” Tripp said. “No matter what, win or lose, just have fun. Keep a smile on your face. Congratulate the people that did win. Do a lot of work at home and come back and try to win the next show. That's all you can do.”

COMMITTEE CORNER SHOWS AND EXHIBITS Chairman: Patti Manak
The Shows and Exhibits subcommittee help to promote Santa Gertrudis breed through the showing and exhibiting of cattle. The subcommittee acts as the liaison between all association approved shows and the association and is referred to on policy matters pertaining to shows and exhibits. The subcommittee is charged with the establishment and coordination of all approved shows; selects judges to be placed on the approved judges list and raises money for show premiums, national open show awards and end of year high point awards. The committee also keeps track of points from the approved point shows for winners to be announced at the end of the show season. The show season runs from July through March, with high point winners being announced at the SGBI Annual Meeting. There are currently twenty-three approved point shows. The point show season runs from July through March with the high point winners being announced at the SGBI Annual Meeting. The National Open Show in odd years is held in Jackson, Mississippi, with even years being held in Fort Worth, Texas. Both are held in conjunction with the respective livestock shows. This year’s National Open Show will be on Saturday, February 13, 2027, in Jackson, Mississippi. Currently the Shows and Exhibits committee has three fundraisers planned for the year. The Great Gert Drop (Cow Patty Bingo), headed up by Shana Pitchford, will be held in conjunction with the District 6 Show and Sale in Indiana and the HOT Gert Show in Texas. Our other fundraiser will be an online auction hosted through SC Online Sales, with Chris Birdwell heading up the online auction. We appreciate any support of these fundraisers.
BREED STANDARDS Chairman: Heather Blewett
The Breed Standards Committee has had a highly productive spring and summer. During this period, the committee approved both a formal complaint review process for Breed Standards and a process for verifying cattle that meet the Standards of Excellence. Once cattle have been reviewed and approved by the Breed Standards Committee, a Standards of Excellence stamp may be placed on their registration papers. Approved animals will also be entered into Digital Beef as meeting the Standards of Excellence. This summer, at Junior Nationals, the committee reviewed 236 animals, all of which were approved and had their registration papers stamped. The current Breed Standards Committee members are: Heather Blewett, Cristi Harrington, Darrell Pitchford, Dixie Clay, Gene Kubecka, Keaton Bush, Stacey Montano, Chad Murray, Luke Lyness, Wes McDaniel, Suzanne Fulton, and Jessica Humphrey. Members are encouraged to contact any committee member with questions or concerns regarding whether an animal meets the Standards of Excellence. The committee is pleased to provide guidance and clarification. The Breed Standards: Standards of Excellence are available on our website at www.santagertrudis.com.
