Cottage Hospital Supporters Celebrate at Tiara Ball

L

ast Saturday night, the Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital Foundation held its annual ritzy Tiara Ball at, appropriately enough, the Ritz-Carlton Bacara. About 500 guests attended what the invite billed as the “Party of the Year,” most in black tie or gown with a smattering of tiaras in the crowd. In a town with no shortage of black-tie events, this certainly ranked among the most elegant and, from the sounds of laughter throughout the cocktail hour, one of the more enjoyable ones too. The event’s net proceeds will support the hospital’s critical care services, which include the Emergency Department, Trauma Services, and Intensive Care Units (Medical, Surgical, Pediatric, and Neonatal). The event grossed about $620,000. Guests mingled inside and out during the cocktail hour before adjourning to the ballroom, which once again was transformed into a breathtakingly beautiful space. The room was framed with sumptuous draperies lit with a rich purple tone, upon which 11 big screens high above projected images of gorgeous flowers. Solid softcolor and floral table linens complemented the projections. Gracing all tables were centerpieces featuring giant synthetic ivory flowers, many placed on tall pedestals illuminated by hanging lights in clear spheres. Board Chair Greg Faulkner welcomed guests and thanked the many people who make possible the Tiara Ball and the hospital, including four-term Host Committee Chair Alex Nourse and her committee, the dedicated Cottage employees, outstanding medical staff, and administrative leadership. He noted how unusual it is for a community of our size to have a teaching hospital and Level 1 Trauma Center and such a broad scope of clinical services. Faulkner expressed gratitude to community members who have given generously in time and money for the continuation and improvement of critical health care in our community. President and CEO Ron Werft shared with guests that after 15 years of rebuilding, all new construction on Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital has been completed, and the $820 million project was completed on time and on budget. Werft extolled the new buildings, along with the great physicians and the dedicated and compas-

sionate staff, and noted, among other impressive stats, that Santa Barbara and Goleta Valley Cottage Hospitals are ranked by the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services in the top 9 percent. Werft briefly touched on some new initiatives, including direct-toconsumer virtual care and an Epilepsy Monitoring Unit in support of its Neurosciences Institute that will open this year. In the next several years, there will be an Advanced Simulation Training Center to support the educational needs of caregivers and a potential expansion of the medical residency programs. Werft related how the 1/9 Debris Flow reinforced the importance of Lead sponsors the Bollag Family: Ben, Naomi, Tracy, and Michael Bollag planning for community-wide emergencies and turned to the coronavirus. He reassured guests that the leadership team is meeting daily to monitor and prepare for evolving needs. Werft pointed out the incredibly talented infectious-disease physicians on staff, including Dr. David Fisk, and remarked that Cottage has adequate facilities, staff, and supplies, and it will protect its caregivers if and when the need arises. He expressed his gratitude for guests’ support of the rebuilding project and explained how proceeds from the Tiara Ball will help complete a redesign and remodel of the Emergency Department (ED), which will separate the workflow for those with serious medical emergenFormer boardmember Bob Andrews and Host Committee Member Margaret Wilkinson cies from those with lower acuity. how episodic happiness is); being smack in the middle of a hotly contested boxing match; sitting on my couch reading Raymond Chandler while listening to Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto in A Major or Bill Evans’s Waltz for Debby (I know that sounds insufferably pretentious, but it’s true). It could even be sweating my ass off training myself or someone else. Anything that momentarily divorces me from care and obligation, that state of complete absorption in a task or activity that either lifts me out of or seats me more thoroughly in myself, I’m not sure which, but, whichever it is, that is happiness.

What do you like most about your job? That I get to boss people around with absolute impunity. I’m kidding, mostly. To be serious, when I push, prod, cajole, mock, whatever it takes, and see people begin to get it, that is, surprisingly to an old curmudgeon like myself, very rewarding. But the bossing people is good, too. And being my own boss so I get to boss myself. And, of course, getting paid. What is your most marked characteristic? Probably deter-

Joshua Schneyer “ B oxing is the most comprehensive workout there is,” says Joshua Schneyer. “It requires that you gain coordination. It requires lots of focus. It requires courage, tenacity, and discipline.” Schneyer is the owner of the State Street Boxing Club (SSBC), located right where our main drag dips below 101. Though there is training for contact boxing at SSBC, the majority of the members come to exercise and participate in the intense conditioning classes. “Boxing as a fitness workout, instead of fighting, has developed in the past 20 years,” explains Schneyer, who is also the head coach at SSBC. “No other single workout develops functional strength, endurance, coordination, and flexibility.” A former chef, opera singer, and English professor, Schneyer is a truly fascinating and multifaceted man. As we eat breakfast together at Dawn Patrol, which is next door to his gym, I’m captivated by the twists and turns of his story. Born in Buffalo, New York, Schneyer moved as a kid to D.C., where his family’s home was a way station for protesters and radicals. “I had a checkered high school career and quit,” he discloses, noting that he boxed informally and did some martial arts. In 1976, he drove Route 40 west and wound up in San Francisco. “I had $40 in my pocket,” says Schneyer, who got a job washing dishes at Capurro’s Restaurant in Fisherman’s Wharf. That’s where he met a line cook named George Peters, who became a mentor. “He was a Virgil to my Dante,” reflects Schneyer. “He looked after me and guided me.” Peters took him to Newman’s Gym, where he met a skeptical coach named Marvin Moore. “He owned the legendary cynicism of boxing coaches who grow to have no faith in anybody who tells you they want to be a boxer,” says Schneyer, who began training five days a week there and competing in amateur bouts. “He taught me a solid foundation. I still teach the things he taught me.” In 1978, Peters suddenly committed suicide, and Schneyer, then just 20 years old, was so disturbed that he moved to Mendocino. A friend suggested that if he joined the U.S. Army, they’d pay him to box, so Schneyer did, getting stationed at Fort Ord in Monterey and boxing for their team. “All I did was boxing and reading,” he explains. “There

was little military duty.” After four years, he moved back to Mendocino to work as a sous chef at the Heritage House, where he met a busboy who was studying at UCSB’s College of Creative Studies. In 1987, without a diploma and 29 years old, Schneyer was accepted to this special UCSB school. “One of the best things that happened to me,” he affirms. “It was a seminal experience. They gave me the tools to think for myself, both personally and intellectually.” It’s at UCSB that he was introduced to classical music and opera, so he decided to train as a singer. Next, he earned a graduate degree in poetry and fiction from Boston University in 1993 and came back to Santa Barbara. He started teaching basic English, composition, and creative writing at Santa Barbara City College and began singing for Opera Santa Barbara. Throughout the 1990s, Schneyer was teaching, singing with the opera and San Roque Catholic Church, and coaching at the gym. In 1999, he bought State Street Boxing Club. “Originally, I had a couple of partners,” he acknowledges with a smile. “They put in the money. I put in the sweat. Now it’s all mine. It’s not a mom-and-pop operation — it’s just pop.” Two decades later, Schneyer’s opinion is well formed. “A lot of my favorite people are not fighters, or the best at it,” he says. “I mostly like people who work hard.”

JOSHUA SCHNEYER ANSWERS THE PROUST QUESTIONNAIRE. What is your idea of perfect happiness? I like what Freud

said, that happiness is an episodic phenomenon. Given that, there are any number of possible episodes of, if not exactly perfect happiness (is there even such a thing?), then relative and satisfying happiness: a stay at The Peninsula Hotel with my wife with several days of vacation behind and in front of us (which almost never happens, which shows just

mination or consistency, but it could be pomposity, depending on who you ask. It’s a close race. What is your greatest fear? Death. Or Gertrude Stein.

Who do you most admire? My sister, who is smart without being condescending, talented without being pretentious, principled without being boring, and who managed to not only survive the asylum of our family growing up, but to put together a tremendous family and productive life and has unfailingly been a beacon of sanity and reason and has never once stinted her support of me, her bad brother, whenever I’ve needed it, which, especially when I was younger, was rather often. What is your greatest extravagance? On an ongoing basis,

no contest: whisky. I love whisky, and I particularly love very good whisky, which, sadly, is stupidly expensive. But, for a single preposterous purchase, my hi-fi system. Or my car. Or possibly my shoes. Tough question. What is your current state of mind? After answering that

last question, a little abashed and alarmed at my lack of thrift. Which talent would you most like to have? To be able

to sing like Eberhard Wächter or Jussi Björling or, barring that, Janis Joplin.

What do you consider your greatest achievement? Mar-

rying Jenn Brodt, without question. Best wife ever.

What is your most treasured possession? A pair of boxing

gloves given to me by my first coach.

Which historical figure do you most identify with? Sam-

uel Johnson. Obviously, he was significantly smarter and more talented than I, and he had a far greater impact on the world. So to say I identify with him is a bit grandiose, but he was irritable and irascible and sometimes curmudgeonly, and his friends loved him in spite of that, and maybe even because of it at times. I am all of those things and hope my friends love me as well. He could also be terrifically kind and generous, even when he was being grumpy, and those, too, are attributes I at least aspire to. Also, we share the horror of dying. I’m sure, had she been alive then, he would’ve been afraid of Gertrude Stein, too. On what occasion do you lie? I cannot tell a lie.

Since 2013, Roger Durling has interviewed a notable Santa Barbara resident and subjected them to the Proust questionnaire each week. See a full version of this week’s interview and an archive of more than 300 past profiles at independent.com/sbq.

Book Drop: Landscape Designer Margie Grace B reaking away from a family tradition in the geological sciences, Margie Grace supplemented her UCSC coursework in earth and life sciences with classes in landscape architecture. That early interest forged a career. With nearly 40 years in the business, Grace’s award-winning work honors her native Southern California. At the same

time, work trips to Spain, Australia, and New Zealand, among other faraway places, have informed her projects here at home, where she’s considered an expert in combining the natural beauty and design of the Santa Barbara region. Her first book on the subject, Private Gardens of Santa Barbara: The Art of Outdoor Living, was released by publisher Gibbs Smith on March 3. In the following Q&A, Grace reflects on

Message From The President

dirt, deadlines, the joy of a granddaughter, and growing happiness through gardening. What drew you to landscape design early on? I was studying geology. At the time, there

were no jobs in geology, and we were a family of geologists — my mother, brother-in-law, future husband, and future father-in-law. We had all our eggs in one basket. I thought it prudent to diversify. I’d always loved gardening, so I jumped into landscape maintenance, which led to design, which led to getting my landscape contractor license, which brought me to landscape design-build. It’s been 37 amazing years now—I’ve never looked back. What has been your favorite work-related field trip or vacation? Travelling in south-

ern Spain — the Moorish gardens and architecture! What is your favorite public landscape design in Santa Barbara? I’m not sure Lotusland is

technically a public landscape, but it is open to the public. Going with a stricter definition of public, it’s the Santa Barbara Courthouse.

Where do you find design inspiration outside of landscape architecture? Nature — the master

teacher and the wellspring of all inspiration, hands down. What do you like most about your job? What’s not to love? Dirt,

rocks, plants. Dreaming, designing, drawing. Interesting people. Tremendous variety. It’s like being a kid in the sandbox every single day! What do you dislike most about your job?

Time pressure. Deadlines. So many gardens, so little time! What is your current state of mind? Lit up! I’m

inspired. It’s a great big, wonderful, exciting world! I’ve got a grandbaby, a daughter-in-law and two grown sons I’m crazy about, a brilliant partner who amazes me every day, fabulous projects in the works, and a new book. It doesn’t get better than that! What is your idea of perfect happiness? Time

spent with my granddaughter.

What is your greatest extravagance? Travel.

We’ve got a long list of places to go. And I splurge every year at the Lotusland plant auction.

What do you consider the most overrated virtue? Temperance.

You should definitely overdo from time to time time—play hooky on a gorgeous day; open the last bottle of wine even though it’s already late; dance all night; say yes to dessert.

What do you consider your greatest achievement? Besides two amaz-

ing offspring, Grace Design Associates is my greatest achievement. I’ve had the honor and the pleasure to create gardens that bring joy every day to those who use them. What is your most treasured possession?

My mother’s geology textbooks. Her notes in the margins. Her handwriting brings her memory close enough to touch. Who are your heroes in real life? The heroes

of my youth, those incredibly courageous civil rights leaders: Dr. King and Mahatma Gandhi. And my mom. She is the smartest and the most courageous person I have ever known. What is your motto? If it’s worth doing, it’s

worth doing to excess.

For more on Grace and her projects, visit gracedesignassociates.com. Private Gardens of Santa Barbara can be ordered at Amazon.

SINGLE LADIES AT HOME WITH HOME OWNERSHIP

T

his year’s International Women’s Day on

March 8 is especially significant in that 100 years have passed since August 26, 1920 - the date that the 19th Amendment was certified and gave women the right to vote. One hundred years later, it’s exciting to consider that single women buyers are the largest growing segment of the home buying market behind married couples. Prior to 1974, when the Equal Opportunity to Credit Act passed, single, widowed or divorced women needed a man to cosign a mortgage application, no matter how much income they earned. Now, single women are outpacing single men in home ownership with single women owning 22% of homes on average, while single men own less than 13%. Bank of America’s 2018 Homebuyer’s Insights Report highlighted women buyers “skipping the spouse and buying the house.” The report illustrated women prioritize buying a house over single men; percentages were higher across all categories when ranking how thinking of owning a home made them feel: responsible, independent, ‘like an

adult,’ and empowered. Home ownership creates stability, and is a way to build wealth, so it’s not a surprise that ownership feels empowering. Many women believe they do not need to “put a ring on it” before buying. They are staying single longer, focusing on building careers. If they decide to purchase with a partner in the future, they have options such as selling their property to contribute towards a down payment or keeping the property for rental income. Also, a single female homebuyer “may be coming from a past relationship and purchasing a new home for herself, her children and her parents,” points out Jessica Lautz, vice president of demographics and behavioral insights for the National Association of Realtors®. Buying a home – whether coupled or single, female or male – can be a daunting task, but your Realtor ® can help you build a team of professionals to guide and assist you through the process. It truly is a journey worth taking! Call your Realtor® today to get started or contact the Santa Barbara Association of Realtors® at sbaor.com.
